Mother’s Day By Tracy Tsefalas of Fumerie Parfumerie + Jovoy Remember Me Draw

Tracy Tsefalas and her brother

My family moved to Eugene, Oregon when my brother’s and I were very young. For those of you that aren’t familiar, it’s a bit of a hippie town. Every few years the painted buses would roll into town and settle in on East 13th street in anticipation of the arrival of the Grateful Dead. Our family belonged to a co-op where we would get our tofu out of large tubs and grind our own peanut butter. On special evenings out, my beautiful mother attired in dress and heels, would envelop herself in the scent of soft amber and spice as she hugged me an early goodnight. As she did not typically include fragrance in her daily routine, the noticeable presence of perfume was enough to capture my attention and I enjoyed breathing in the captivating aroma. The scent that she wore was her own combination of oils self-blended at the local Essential Oils shop in town. Other than those small hand-labeled bottles of essential oils, I don’t recall my mom ever having what would traditionally be considered an actual bottle of perfume. After graduating high school, I moved up North to Portland, Oregon which impressed me as being a big city. After all, Eugene had only one main bridge while Portland boasted a dozen. At the age of 25, I married into a family that owned a fragrance boutique that specialized in classic fragrance lines such as Guerlain, Caron, CHANEL,and Jean Patou. It was a world that was completely foreign to me but I was intrigued, so much so that within a few years I left my other job and began working at The Perfume House full time.

My husband at the time did his best to introduce me to the many fragrant options and varieties. Initially, nothing really spoke to me and I figured that maybe I simply had the type of skin that didn’t compliment fragrance. It wasn’t until we landed on a spicy, oriental scent that I recall being surprised at how intriguing and nuanced the right scent could be on skin ( for those curious, the fragrance was Secret of Venus by Parfums Weil). As I delved further into discovering my own personal tastes, I began sharing samples with my mom, Ann Thomas. She gravitated towards the vanilla and amber scents, which she wore beautifully. My mother and I have always been close and I’m deeply grateful for the support and acceptance that she has consistently shown even in some of my more experimental phases.

One example was my punk rock phase in which I spiked my hair and blared angry music, which my twin brother responded to by counter blasting Billy Joel and Supertramp (guess who won that particular music battle?). When I realized that the world of fragrance offered more than just a job or a minor passing interest, I took a deep dive into researching scent and collecting vintage fragrances that spoke to me. I found myself unable to walk past a fragrance counter without stopping and immersing myself in the array of endless scents. Even today I experience a flush of pleasure when entering a fragrance boutique, with the anticipation of scent exploration. As always, my mother responds to my interest with sincere curiosity and engagement. She asks many questions and we have had numerous in-depth conversations on the topic of perfume. During one visit, I brought along a book, Perfumes the A-Z Guide, by Luca Turin and Tania Sanchez.

I also brought a collection of samples for her to experience as I read to her the corresponding reviews that were notable for their remarkable descriptions and sly humor. My mom is an avid reader and found the book compelling and appreciated learning more about the world of fragrance in this manner. I’ve since gifted her more recent edition of Perfumes the Guide, as well as several more samples for her to delve into and explore. Although she might not share the same passion for fragrance as I do, she is genuinely interested and always open to attaining more knowledge on the subject.

On my mother’s first visit to Fumerie Parfumerie, she expressed her delight through tears and wholehearted pride. She knows first-hand the profound challenges and adversity that I faced in realizing this dream, and I truly believe that her love and unwavering support throughout my life made it possible. My mother’s birthday is in August but she recently mentioned to me that she had fallen in love with the Jovoy Remember Me. Those that know me can attest that I tend to lack much in the way of patience, and I ended up gifting her scent back in March in order for her to enjoy the scent now and throughout the year. It makes me happy to know that she can spray this beautiful fragrance to her heart’s delight, and that she is experiencing the true pleasure of perfume. To my mom and all the mothers out there, I unequivocally wish you a joyous and fragrant Mother’s Day!

  • What a beautiful tribute and an unfolding of your fragrance Journey, Tracy. On my next trip to Portland, I will be stopping in.. Would love remember me.

Tracy’s mother seems very interesting person and a great company to have. For her to fall in love with Jovoy Remember Me must mean this has to be a good fragrance. Tracy’s life has been interesting, growing up in a hippie town and then being married into a family that sold perfumes. My choice is Jovoy Remember Me. I am in US.

  • bigscoundrel says:

I really enjoyed Tracy’s story especially the part about her mother’s first visit to Fumerie Parfumerie. My mom likes the classic Shalimar. I’d love to win a bottle of Jovoy Remember Me. I’m in the USA.

  • For me Jovoy is a very particular house even if i’ve tested only 3 fragrances from them, all of them great. I love their presentation and Remember me sounds great, also Cecile Zarokian makes only wonderful juices so pretty sure this one is good. Thanks for the chance.

  • NiceVULady says:

A Happy Mother’s Day to all. How nice to see how Tracy’s mom influenced her. My mom was a huge fan of Opium and wore it every day. I loved to open her closet and catch the last vestiges of it on her clothes. I would love to win the Jovoy. Thanks for a delightful post and a lovely draw. I’m in the USA

  • I enjoyed Tracy’s journey of fragrance discovery- from novice to having her own lovely store. My mother’s favorite fragrance is Borneo 1834 by Serge Lutens (which I love, too). I would love to win Remember Me by Jovoy as I also really enjoy their fragrance Psychedelique, so I imagine this would have to be good too. I am in the US.

  • Enjoyed this story. May Our Mother’s experience Mother’s Day everyday and have a life Full of Blessings. One day I shall stop by the parfumerie if I visit Portland. I’d go with Remember Me bottle. Heard this is a great fragrance. Thanks, California

  • My Mom’s still enjoying fragrance. Her current love is Gucci Bloom. I introduce my recently acquired samples to her and love to watch her first impressions while she sniffs. Happy Mother’s Day all! USA

  • Lovely story! Thank you. If I win I’d love the gift certificate so I can order samples to share with my mom and sisters! I’m in the US

Tracy, great Mother’s Day post. I enjoyed learning about your childhood and how you grew up. Your experiences with your Mom and Brother and how you got into fragrances. It is true that you really have to explore different types of fragrances and see how they smell on your skin to see what works for you. I would gift my mom Tauerville Vanilla Flash from Fumerie Parfumerie. I have heard a lot of good things about the quality of the Vanilla note in this fragrance. For the giveaway I would take the bottle of Jovoy Remember Me. I am from the USA.

  • Luis Quezada says:

I loved this review. Jovoy is a house that I was hesitant to explore but this review was the game changer. My mother loves replica under the lemon trees by maison margiela

  • Dubaiscents says:

I always love to hear people’s “origin stories” regarding how they fell in love with perfume and I love to hear that, like me, Tracy has been able to share her fragrant journey with her mother. Now that I am back in the US I can’t wait to visit my own grandmother who lives in Portland and to visit Fumerie! Thank you for this generous give away, I love this Jovoy scent and would adore sharing a bottle with my mother!

  • Nancy Johnson says:

    Dear Tracy,
What a welcome personal essay you wrote. I too remember my mom using her two perfumes sparingly. Ma Griffe and L’r du Temp. She would dress up in her hand sewn silk cocktail dresses, all 5’10 inches of her and would spray the perfume as she left with my dad for the infrequent party they were invited to.
Thank you for bringing back this memory of glamour in relationship to being a mom which is not often put in the same category.
I love what your shop has brought to the city. I am proud of you for being bold and being such a lovely presence.
Happy Mother’s Day. You brought a bright spot into today.

  • Greatly enjoyed the closeness and details of your relationship with your mother. If picked I’d like Jovoy Remember Me. US

  • roxhas1cat says:

I’ve known Tracy for a few years now, I didn’t know her her background. Fun to read about her, I didn’t know we are both twins! I’ve never heard of Secret of Venus. Tracy’s shop is so cozy and she is so patient and she really knows her fragrances. I’d love to win “Remember Me”. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • Your mom Ann looks so happy and vibrant. Thank you for sharing her love of perfume. I love Jovoy Remember Me. Happy Mother’s Day to you both

  • Damiana C says:

My mom’s favorite fragrance is Perdizione by Nobile1942, which features orange blossom and vanilla, so this is a nice coincidence. I enjoyed learning about this perfumery and how the owner’s mom loved the featured fragrance. I would love to win the Jovoy Remember Me bottle and I live in the USA. Thank you and Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms!

  • I really enjoyed hearing about the parallel journeys of Tracy and her mom and the unwavering support Ann providing to her daughter throughout her life. It seemed they had a lovely mother-daughter relationship. My own mother loves the original Fendi, and I’m always on the lookout for this fragrant beauty. If I’m lucky enough to win, I would love to try Jovoy’s Remember Me. It’s a fragrance I’ve been keen to try for awhile. I live in the US. Many thanks!

  • I really enjoyed the story! I wish my love of fragrance had been more developed before my Mom’s death. It is not something we shared together. I would love to try the fragrance that captured your Mom’s attention. I am in the USA

  • I have been to Fumerie in Portland. What a lovely store and so many wonderful scents. I do not have any Jovoy scents and Remember Me would be a wonderful way to start trying them. Thank you for the chance to win. USA

  • DulciusExAsperis says:

Congrats on realizing your dream of opening your shop and making your mama proud! My mother loves Jean Nate body splash (the scent of ’80s moms everywhere)!
I’d choose the gift certificate please… I’m in the USA.

  • Happy Mothers Day to my mom and all moms everywhere. What a beautiful story and how her mother expressed delight through tears. I prefer Jovoy remember me bottle.
    I live in USA.

  • What a lovely story! It’s interesting to see how eventually Tracy fully embraced her passion for perfume and how her mom was supportive of it too. I’d love to win the bottle so I can gift it to my mom too. My mom also rarely wears it but she does have a bottle of Chanel No 5 on her dresser. Thanks so much for this giveaway. I live in the USA.

  • What a beautiful story. My mom’s birthday is in August too , and just like this charming lady called Ann Thomas , my mom is into fragrances too. The difference is all she wears is Channel. Back in the days when I asked her why she buys only CHANEL , she said “You’re either CHANEL or Dior girl” .
Best wishes Tracy , and happy mother’s day to all mothers on Cafleurebon .
I’d like to win a bottle of Jovoy Remember Me.

What a touchy article. Just like Tracy I’ve always been close with my mom, but in our family my father was the fragrance guy with massive for my understandings back then collection of 20-25 bottles. My mom is into Addict and Poison by Dior , and Allure by Chanel. My dad right now keeps his collection pretty much the same as numbers , my mom owns 5 bottles.
About Jovoy I know one . Bought a sample of Incident Diplomatique because of Sebastian praising it all the time. Classy fragrance for special occasions. I do plan to get a bottle for the autumn.
Happy mother’s day to all Ladies here.
    Appreciate the giveaway campaign

  • I love the notes of Jovoy Remember Me. Creamy spices sounds so pretty and sweet! I’d love to win the full bottle.
    I live in the US.

  • What I love about this review is, I love hearing that people have a good relationship with their mother. It’s very heartwarming my mom’s favorite fragrance is obsession by Calvin Klein.

I would love the bottle of remember me, thank you for the chance I live in the US.

  • Thank you for all of your wonderful comments. Such a lovely and supportive perfume audience at Ça Fleure Bon, I’m grateful for your kind words.

  • Bubeto_GG says:

Never been to Portland , but that was such a great story . If i go there i’ll make sure visiting Fumerie Parfumerie will be in my to-do list.
My mom only cares for 2 fragrances – Chanel Coromandel and Serge Lutens Arabie , both she smelled on me first .
When i think Jovoy Paris i think about by far the best fragrance boutique i’ve ever been to-no US boutique comes even close .
I do not own full Jovoy bottles atm, but i have 2 big 30ml decants of Incident Diplomatique and Incident Private Label-both must try for every patchouli lover.
    Thanks for this fantastic opportunity.
    Cheers from VA

  • WaltherP99 says:

Personally i think this is the best article lately. I wish i had the same tipe of relationship with my mother , but i don’t . Happy mothers day to Ann Thomas , and to all present and future mothers on Cafleurebon .
I saw a few subscribers shared their mothers favorite fragrances , so i will too. Angel Mugler , Midnight Poison Christian Dior and Shalimar EDP Guerlain are her favorites.
From Jovoy as a brand i do own full bottle of the famous Les Jeux sont Faits – fantastic night out scents. One of the best out there-to me at least.Adore the smell of it , and if Remember Me is on pair , i will consider buying it.
I’d like to win a bottle – it will be great.
I like Cecile Zarokian as a perfumer. My scent of the day is Curacao Bay-one of her creations.
    I do follow @cafleurebon , @Amerikasnyc @jovoyparis + @cecilezarokianparfumeur on instagram , and i’ll check @fumeriepdx .

  • What a cool story behind the shop! Fumerie and its events are always so much fun. If this is still open I’d love Remember Me, it sounds absolutely delightful.

  • wildevoodoo says:

Remember Me sounds like such a gorgeous fragrance. Love Zarokian’s work. Thank you for the opportunity. Very excited for the event at Fumerie this weekend!

  • wildevoodoo says:

Oops, just read a bit more carefully and realized I forgot some information in my initial comment. Mods, if you see this, I agree with Unclel979 that an option to edit or remove comments would be really helpful! But back to the purpose of the comment. I loved hearing some backstory behind Fumerie and Tracy’s family! My mother doesn’t wear fragrance, so from Fumerie she would likely most appreciate a lovely candle or bar of soap. Having said that, I am slowly trying to acclimate her to more mainstream options using scents she enjoys, like Mon Guerlain 🙂

  • I’m not easy to move kind of person, but I do admit the backstory of Fumerie Parfumerie is beautiful . Being close with your parents is not something common nowadays in US. Sharing the same passion – fragrances , helps a lot 🙂
I’ll go with the flow, and share my moms favorite fragrances-the whole Dior Homme line. Yes they’re marketed for men only , but we all know because of the iris most women can wear them. She also loves Enchanted Forest Vagabond Prince, but she only wears it on special occasions.
I’ve smelled Remember Me , what a great choice by Tracy’s mom. If lucky I’d like to get the bottle of this gem.
Best wishes to Ann , Tracy and all the girls here.

  • I loved reading about Tracy’s journey in opening the shop, and the support her mother gave her. I would gift my mother Oriza L. Legrand Muguet Fleuri. I would love to win the gift card.
