Montale Dark Vanilla Review + A Wild Ride Draw

Montale Dark Vanilla review

Pierre Montale has created over 150 fragrances since the initial conception of the house and created a cult-like following. They possess attitude and passion, have a solid reputation of lasting longer than most niche counterparts, and staying loyal to the ode of oud for many years.  My first encounter with Montale perfumes began with none other but Roses Musk, and within the past decade, I managed to accumulate over thirty different releases by the brand since then. When you own so many perfumes from one particular house, some releases tend to be a bit reminiscent of one another; however, Montale Dark Vanilla has proven to be unlike any other. This one is a dark horse galloping through the clouds of Cambodian oud. A deep sensual aroma is so seductive, you feel intoxicated by its intensity and depth, and it slowly takes over your entire mind and body, pulling you into the narcotic state of pleasure. I felt slowly descending into the abyss of smoky vanilla as if it was being cooked over aromatic oud chips, an exotic, masculine stab at vanilla that will appeal to someone with a taste for leather with a pinch of cumin.

When the intensity of the initial blast of leather subsides, vanilla finally breaks free from it all and shines in its full glory. There is nothing quite like Montale fragrances that are often recognized immediately for their intensity and projection. One of the pioneer players in using oud and vanilla in their compositions, their latest release is quite a stunner. Montale Dark Vanilla makes me think of an exotic horse show in the heart of the Middle East. A dark stallion is being groomed for the showcasing, anointed with exotic oils; its silky-smooth skin is rubbed with aromatic spices. The ambiance is set with oud and vanilla burning in the golden bowls all around the room, and the row of brand-new luxurious leather saddles fills the stables with a sweet, savory aroma.

It’s dawn now, and as the celebratory music plays in the background, the stallion we caught a whiff of earlier breaks through the gates and gallops into the desert towards freedom. His skin is glistering in the setting sun, and his nostrils are savagely inhaling the desert air, he has spent a long time being constrained by what is expected from him, but nature always prevails and corrects the course. His blood is rushing; his trail smells of smoky vanilla and a faint trace of spices. He breaks free from the saddle and leaves behind nothing but narcotic sillage that lingers long after the trail has gone cold. He will never return as he was born to roam free. Montale Dark Vanilla requires a  certain degree of self-confidence and attitude from the wearer, but if you are up for the ride, it will surely be a wild one.

I would like to enter the giveaway. As a vanilla fan, I am sure that I will enjoy this. The house of Montale is really good at making goumand scents. I really enjoy Intense Cafe from the house. Hopefully I can get my nose on this one!

  • Olya created a lovely image of the feel of Montale Dark Vanilla in invoking a horse show in the Middle East, with smells of vanilla, Oud, leather, and spices wafting in the air. I have tried Montale Honey Oud and I love it. Pictures and description in Olya Bar’s review of Montale Dark Vanilla do a great job of describing this perfume. Cambodian oud is softer and less animalic than, say, Indian oud, so it seems Montale Dark Vanilla is yet another great offering from the house of Montale. Thanks for the review and a generous draw. Writing from the USA.

  • The stallion imagery really helps me to understand this perfume. I love a fragrance that requires the wearer to possess self confidence. I have tried a few Montale fragrances and so far my favorite is Vanille Absolu. ~ Indiana, USA

Montale has some great offerings. My favorite so far is Honey Aoud. Thanks for the draw. From Indianapolis.

  • Olya says that even though Montale has created more than 150 perfumes, there is nothing like Dark Vanilla in the company’s catalogue. She also reminds that Montale has done a lot of oud and vanilla fragrances. Montale Dark Vanilla seems inspired by middle east equestrian culture. I am in US.

  • Olya’s review was interesting about the stallion. Leaving his saddle behind smelling the leather. This Fragrance sounds strong , lingers, but definitely in a good way. Love the notes . Never disappointed with a Montale Fragrance. Thank you for the chance. USA

  • Olya! What a strong review! Gorgeous imagery! ❤️ I’m actually sitting in a tack room as I type this and imagining the vanilla and hot desert. What a fascinating scent! I am most interested in how the oud and vanilla are experienced together in this scent (if it is as fierce & lovely as Olya writes, then someone will be a very lucky winner). I’ve never tried a Montale fragrance, though I’m certainly aware of this house & how many are quite dedicated Montale wearers. Perhaps this is my lucky chance to experience Montale! Thank you for the wonderful opportunity! USA ❤️

  • Olya’s review of Montale’s Dark Vanilla is so vivid and detailed you can almost feel and smell the scene she laid out so fantastically.

I absolutely enjoy a good vanilla fragrance, my fav so far is Vanille Intense by Nicolai but Dark Vanilla sounds like it would give Vanille Intense a run for it’s money.

I have only tried Black Aoud from Montale and I liked it quite well. From Montale’s other house Mancera, I own and enjoy Cedrat Boise and Red Tobacco.

    I’m in the USA.

  • jmmcmenamin says:

I just recently discovered Vanille Absolu. I’m excited for this fragrance based on how much I liked the other. I like the dark horse parallel. Perhaps this scent is something of a dark horse too?
    In Louisiana USA.

  • Thank you Olya. The imagery was strong on this one. I’ve not had encounters with horses but can visualize the stallion galloping in the desert with nostrils flaring and if it got a spice rub, then the trail would surely be interesting 🙂 My favorite from Montale so far is Intense Cafe. I’m in USA

  • Thank you Olya for the strong imagery of a powerful stallion and all the scents associated with this show horse galloping towards freedom. Powerful, like Montale fragrances are known to be. Thank you for the opportunity to take part in this giveaway. USA

  • Mazikeen Smith 24 says:

Another great review from Olya! Thank you for your imagination-touching review. I also love how you used a black horse to describe this fragrance, based on the note, I think it suits the perfume well.
I am so puzzled how would these spices smell together with my 2 favorite notes, vanilla, and oud. I hope to try this soon.
Thanks to Europerfumes for the generosity!
    Cheers from USA

An intense sense of unbridled freedom was what set this review apart — allowing the reader to feel the exact moment the stallion’s nature, or rather, this wild fragrance’s essence, takes over. An insatiable lover of Cambodian Oud and Vanilla, I look forward to initiating my Montale collection with this magnificent creation. Thank you for the opportunity!

I’ll love to smell or better I’ll love to own this jewel. The image created by the author in this review is very enticing. I’ll love to smell the combination of the Cambodian oud and the vanilla together. Thank you for the opportunity to participate, commenting from Orlando, Fl 32828

  • Super big fan of Montale Paris & the long list of oud fragrances they have & this one sounds like it’ll be a good one as well!! I’m most definitely up for a wild ride LoL that’s the truth when it comes to Montale fragrances (super intense) just how I like em!! Great review Olya love the way you described this beautiful fragrance!!

USA, thanks Cafleurebon for this special opportunity & good luck people!!

  • I would love to be entered in this giveaway. I love Montale fragrances and I´m a huge fan of Vanille fragrances. I love how Olya ressembles the fragrance with a dark horse galloping. Just amazing.

  • I’ve had my eye on this fragrance as my next purchase from Montale. I love their scents. I own Full Incense and think it would layer amazingly with Dark Vanilla. This sounds like the perfect unisex vanilla blend that would layer with just about anything. I loved the beautiful horse imagery Olya described.

    I live in the USA.

  • Great review Olya
I really enjoyed the stallion roaming free description. Dark Vanilla with oud and vanilla sounds great and I hope I win
    Sounds perfect for winter too

  • Excellent description. The way you describe the transition of this fragrance is so intriguing. Montale never fails in its fragrances. Intense cafe is one of my favorites but I feel that Dark Vanilla is going to surpass it due to its composition.

  • James R Weaver says:

The Notes in this fragrances look intriguing Leather Oud and vanilla A spicy Vanilla, My favorite Montale Fragrance is Intense Cafe my favorite vanilla scent is Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille followed by Xerjoff Lira. Virginia USA resident

  • ThatMulattoDude says:

Really enjoyed how Olya painted a picture with her words about the profile of this scent. This is probably more daring than anything I have in my collection. I’m intrigued though because I do like vanilla as it’s used in men’s fragrances especially as it balances out more daring notes like oud and leather. I’ve never tried a Montale fragrance. Appreciate the opportunity to win this. Blessings from Virginia, USA!

  • First of all, thank you for the wonderful giveaway and Olya’s fantastic review. The description of Montale’s Dark Vanilla that she provided drew me in. The scene she conjured was well thought out and made me want to get my nose on this scent. A spicy, sweet, leathery vanilla combined with Montale’s well known oud note? Sign me up! I am already a fan of this house and of vanilla scents. Thank you again for the opportunity! USA

  • Wonderful review Olya! Vanilla has always been a tricky note for me. It tends to go sickly sweet on my skin if not tempered with some more traditionally masculine notes. The addition of pepper, leather, oud and spices is a welcome addition to vanilla. The stallion imagery is great. I like Black Aoud from Montale. I’m in MD, USA.

  • Intoxicating and even narcotic are some interesting descriptive words to describe this fragrance. I certainly do appreciate smooth and seductive vanilla oud combinations. I’ve tried about 20 or so from Montale and Honey Aoud continues to reign supreme for my tastes. This one sounds lovely.

  • patrick_348 says:

I liked the imagery that Olya used to describe the fragrance. She makes it sound very masculine and assertive. I have always thought that vanilla is a tricky note that can dominate a fragrance excessively, but this sounds like the oud is strong competition. I know only Montale Vanilla Cake, which I think is fun to wear. In the US, in NC.

  • Thank you Olya for once again bringing us an artistic review!
I really love how you used the horse with leather saddle, and oils as analogy, I think that is so artistic!
This fragrance is so intriguing, the combination of the notes is quite puzzling and exciting at the same time. Love love the notes especially vanilla and sandalwood, together with oud <3
    Thank you Europerfumes!
Have a fragrant day to all! USA

  • Wow, Olya’s review of Montale Dark Vanilla really makes me want to try it. I love how she describes descending into the abyss of smoky vanilla and that it reminds her of an exotic horse show in the Middle East. I have tried many Montale fragrances and I would love to have a bottle of Dark Vanilla. Thank you for the article and the giveaway. I am located in the USA.

  • As it happens I’m looking for a vanilla that appeals to my sense of leather with a pinch of cumin. Yes, I have tried Montales before. US

  • Olya’s review is stunning, really refreshing and poetic honestly. As someone whose favorite note in fragrances is vanilla I’m excited for an opportunity to draw for this Montale release!

  • Andrei Artimon says:

Montale has some great offerings. My favorite so far is Honey Aoud. Thanks for the draw. From New York.

Thank you for the great review Olya.

While reading your review and looking at the pictures, I was reminded of the latest sci-fi movie making the round – Dune. I imagine that this fragrance, with it’s seductive oud and spice laced vanilla is the spice that everyone is fighting over. The air is heated with the narcotic scents of vanilla, saffron and oud – the time tested combination that has seduced noses for decades.

The Montale that I have in my collection is Wild Aoud.

    Cheers from WI, USA

Montale does oud very well and I would love to get my nose on this one.

  • I have not tried any Montale fragrances, and I find it interesting that Olya has tried so many! Montale Dark Vanilla sounds perfect for Winter. I am in the uS

  • I have not yet tried any fragrances from Montale (I’ve only tried one Mancera fragrance) and I am not familiar with what their collected works is like, so I appreciate when Olya says “When you own so many perfumes from one particular house, some releases tend to be a bit reminiscent of one another; however, Montale Dark Vanilla has proven to be unlike any other.” I’m very interested in trying this fragrance. I want to see what this combination of vanilla, oud, saffron, and leather is like. I live in MD., U.S.A. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity.

  • Thank you for this review. I, too, sometimes feel that Montale’s fragrances tend to run together after a while, with many variations on oud and rose. It’s nice to learn that this one is in a class of its own! I have tried a few by Montale. My favorite by Montale is probably Intense Cafe (very creative, I know…). Cheers from NC, USA.

  • A striking review, as always. Deep in my soul, I am the stallion you describe. Restrained by bridle of civilization, groomed and conditioned for performance. Performance in a circus of propriety and societal expectations. But savage heart of mine yearns to to break free. To draw lungs full of desert air, as I madly gallop to escape. To smell sweet spices of the desert night. To loose myself in woody and vanilla bliss of the eternal freedom.

My body is tied up by ropes of ironed shirts and brand-name ties. The wrist cuffs cuff my wrists in dusty daily stable. But let me get a whiff of the escape, I beg! A whiff of purple night. Of sweet “maybe” … Of Montale Dark Vanilla.

Olya, Amazing Review of Montale Dark Vanilla. It sounds absolutely perfect with the Oud, Leather, and the smokey Vanilla with some spices thrown in. I’ve heard so many great things about this fragrance, but I’ve never tried it. I own a few other Montale fragrances that I truly love. I would love the opportunity to win this fragrance. I am from Ohio, USA.

  • Olya, the way you described makes me ready to take that wild ride. I’ve only enjoyed 13 of Montale’s portfolio (with Starry Nights and Honey Aoud [which smells crunchy] tied for my favorites, and one goal on my bucket list is to sample every fragrance from Montale before I shuffle off this mortal coil.

What I like about your review is the ‘picture’ you made us envision in your description:”A dark stallion is being groomed for the showcasing, anointed with exotic oils; its silky-smooth skin is rubbed with aromatic spices. • I love the description of the scent as a horse market fragrant with spices and sweetness in the fragrance itself sounds divine. I would love to be considered. I live in the US.

  • Olya, I adore the imagery! Montale fragrances don’t disappoint as far as longevity, and I can’t wait to see how this vanilla is handled. I have tried and enjoyed a couple Montale fragrances. Thanks for the review and draw.

  • Bought nice amount of fragrances because of Olya – mostly niche. I like her style of reviewing fragrances.
Spices , dark horse galloping through the clouds of Cambodian oud , with Montale DNA ? Dark Vanilla just wait for me
At the moment i do own 3 Montale fragrances Chocolate Greedy , Oudmazing and Vanilla Extasy, all full bottles.

  • Sweeten up vanilic leather, and oud , with macho feel , I’m in it , to win it , the new Dark Vanilla.
After reading Olya take on the fragrance, I imagined making, and later eating Cayk-e Eshgh , most people know as Persian Love Cake, while sitting on a leather couch.
My favorite Montale is Dark Purple.
Appreciate the review , and the giveaway campaign

  • Enjoyed Olya’s review as she described the notes using vivid riding related descriptions. I have only tried one or two Montale thus far.
    Greetings from Maryland, US.

  • Olya’s review is so visceral and intense, much like horses. I’ve had the pleasure of riding a couple in my lifetime in the rural woods of Indiana, and there is really nothing quite like it! I am sure the leather and woody notes in this fragrance would bring out the fullness of my memories!
This would be my first opportunity to sniff a Montale fragrance, though I have heard great things about them for years. I must say the one downside of rural Indiana is the lack of fragrance stores in which to test these fine fragrances, haha. Thanks for the draw!

  • IvanVelikov says:

Montale is a house with vast amount of loyal followers , for a good reason I believe. If you’re looking for powerhouse fragrances, Montale can offer a great variety. I own Chocolate Greedy , Honey Aoud and my favorite Intense Cafe.
Dark Vanilla is different , grown up vanilla fragrance with leather, and oud.
    Thank you all

  • Montale fragrances , and Olya reviews = perfect combination. Honest , artistic and you do remember both for a long time. No wonder she has over 30 Montale’s in her possession.
In my collection there’s 4 Montale fragrances, Ristretto Intense Cafe, Mukhalat , Day Dreams and Amandes Orientales.
From Dark Vanilla i personally except more ruggedness , with and less sweetness , pleasing leather fragrance , and the usual for Montale great longevity.
    Thank you Olya , Europerfumes

  • Getting compliments is important to me, and one of the reasons to get, or not certain fragrance. One thing is for certain, Montale fragrances do get me lots of positive attention, at least in my surroundings . All their fragrances i know, are also quite powerful, projecting for hours.
Dark Vanilla is not a childish fragrance, but for grown up men , and women. The sweeten leather , is what makes it so appealing to me.
My favorite Montale is Sensual Instinct, but the one that gets me most compliments is Wild Pears.
    Exciting giveaway, USA
    Regards

  • I like leather, spices and oud , I’ll check Dark Vanilla. I also like riding horses , something I used to do 3-4 times per week in my 20s , and early 30s .
Every time I think about Montale I think about top performance. Vanilla Cake lasts forever on me , Sensual Instinct is super strong too. Sampled the second one because of Sebastian Cafleurebon review , and it was so impressive i just had to buy it.
Dark Vanilla compared to Vanilla Cake and Sensual Instinct is more ruff and tumble , but I’ll definitely sample it.
    Thanks for the draw

  • “Montale Dark Vanilla requires a certain degree of self-confidence and attitude from the wearer, but if you are up for the ride, it will surely be a wild one.”

I do agree, 100% , I save a sample, Dark Vanilla is not easy to wear, but it’s is definitely appealing to me, because of the slightly manly feel, the spices, leather and vanilla lurking in the background . Leaning towards masculine maybe , but I believe Dark Vanilla is nowhere near being butch . I also like to add the fragrance is really spicy , at least on my skin.
Montale is one of my favorite houses – atm i do own 11 bottles. Not sure what’s my favorite one , Dark Purple maybe.

Very nice review Olya! What I enjoyed about Olya’s review of Montale Dark Vanilla is the way she compared it to a dark exotic horse, a stallion groomed with exotic oils, fragrant with spices, it’s animalic nature, and a Middle Eastern air and ambiance. That imagery is very evocative and makes the fragrance sound incredibly complex, transportive, and alluring.

I have tried a number of Montale fragrances and have most enjoyed Jasmin Full. I live in the US.

  • I am a fan of Honey Aoud and Chocolate Greedy…both yummy unisex gourmands from Montale. I love the sound of a deep, smoky unisex vanilla and leather. I’ve tried many Montales and there’s a huge range even with their vanillas, so I’m curious where this one falls. Hello from the USA!

  • Ordered a discovery kit of Montale fragrance. Among those was Dark Vanilla. I find myself practically hyperventilating when wearing it. I can’t seem to get enough of the wafting scent. It is way ahead of the others and will be my choice of a full bottle. Now to pick a choice for the free purse size. Considering Intense Cherry, but not committed yet. Love the review and found myself nodding as I read it. Thank you.
