Montale Blue Matcha Review + Unique Tea Giveaway

Montale Blue Matcha

Montale Blue Matcha by Steven Gavriolates©

What is blue matcha? I have heard of green matcha tea in perfume (Le Labo The Matcha 26), but not the blue variety.  Interestingly, it’s not made from tea leaves but from the dried and crushed petals of the butterfly pea flower which are ground into a fine powder that is blue in color.  Montale Blue Matcha is a tea inspired fragrance that doesn’t smell like most tea-based perfumes, it’s neither meditative nor fleeting. Montale Blue Matcha has the longevity  that the Montale brand is known for and can be worn during the day, for evening and for work. I wore my sample and it is more floral on me than on Steven, and I pick up the citrus, black currant and amber with a touch of tobacco and a definite mate note at the base. I am writing this so you can see that everyone has a unique scent print and  that this is not a linear perfume that is going to smell the same on everyone. But I believe it will smell good on just about anyone-Michelyn Camen, Editor in Chief

Notes: Blue Matcha tea, mandarin, lemon, bergamot, blackcurrant, patchouli, Virginian cedar,  black leather, tobacco, African mate absolute, amber, musks

Never thought of tea and butterfly pedals as fragrances notes the bottle the concept both attractive and I would love to get my nose on this one !!!

  • Great review! I can’t wait to try this fragrance since I’m lookingnfor sometimes unique for this summer plus a fragrance that my wife would like. She is very picky lol…Thank you again!

  • Grateful to hear from Michelyn regarding the distinct differences between different people’s skin! I’ve always been fascinated by that. Steven’s reviews are always my go-to for scents I’m not familiar with. I like the idea of the cedarwood note and the citrusy opening leading into the matcha. I’m excited about this one!

  • Montale Blue Matcha seems like a fragrance of lot of unexpected twists. It is not like a typical tea fragrance like the Bvlgaris and it also has notes like tobacco and patchouli which I did not expect. I also didn’t expect it to have floral and fruity elements. I expected it to be more of a casual wear but Steven says it works on formal occasions, too. I am in US.

  • Josh Sentner says:

Always wanted to try this house. Thanks for the great reviews. Always in depth and help me decipher what I want to try next!

  • nguyenkhuusg says:

I am very curious about the “heavier notes” that Steven mentioned in his review. Especially the “leather, patchouli, and cedar”!

  • I wasn’t aware of blue matcha being the “dried and crushed petals of the butterfly pea flower which are ground into a fine powder that are blue in color” as described in Michelyn’s introduction, which Steven didn’t pick up on. Also learnt that it is unlike other tea based perfumes. Great notes. Steven contrasted it nicely with Montale’s typically strong, dark, aoud perfumes. Love Montale’s perfumes (Honey Aoud and Black Aoud, for example) and would love to try Blue Matcha. I am a Redolessence subscriber and enjoy Steven’s clear, detailed, honest video reviews. Thanks for the draw. From USA.

  • I think what struck me was that blue matcha smelt different on them, and that its unique. I am looking for a good work perfume. I really liked both the introduction and the video. I must get my nose on this

  • Thank you for the great review! I’ve always been interested in trying a Montale fragrance and this looks like it could be the one I start with.

  • Such a wonderful review.I must try this. Love Montale Fragrance so many to choose from. This sounds great for Summertime. Thank you for this Chance USA

  • Super vidéo and super fragrance I imagine because I never had the chance to have or to smell a niche fragrance were I leave. And of what I ear and what I have seen on reviews I think I am gonna fall in love with the brand of Pierre montale. Thanks for your video and you generosity!

    Fragrant Readers,

I have never heard of “blue matcha”, so this is a new concept, note, and vocabulary for me–though I have heard of “Yerba Mate”. I’m always so impressed when I discover how different ingredients are made and formulated/how perfume oils are extracted. I will always be moved by the creativity and ingenuity of the various extractions methodologies used in the production of ingredients. I will also always be interested in how scent weaves in and out of culture, helping to cement memory and meaning to human existence and experience.

This week I am enjoying seven perfumes from the house of Nishane. One of these is Wulong Cha, which is a unisex aromatic green fragrance. As this is Nishane, it is an extrait de parfum, so it really packs a punch. With this offering, the tea is interposed with a bit of spice that shows up in the heart notes. At least that is what my developing nose picks up on. Being new to the fragrance world, I simply never thought that tea would show up anywhere other than my tea cup, but reading the entries here on ÇaFleureBon, and watching Mr. Gavrielatos’s “Redolessence”, all sorts of things really do. Ha! (I.e., L’Artisan Parfumeur Cédrat Céruse & Iris de Gris)

Thank you Michelyn for the personal touch describing your wearing experience. I, too, am fascinated by skin chemistry, and further I’m amazed that all of us have a genuinely unique olfactory pallet. I didn’t discover this until recently, listening to the episode entitled, “How Perfume Works” on the podcast “Stuff You Should Know”. The notes that you picked up on–citrus, black currant, amber, & tobacco–seem to offer an interesting backdrop to the “blue machta.”

I would also like to thank Steven for his video. I don’t know about any of the other viewers or readers on here, but this all made me want to travel to Indonesia! If it smells like anything you described, anyway. Steven, you did a really good job breaking down how the perfume really opens up and takes on new shapes throughout its wearing. I really like how you describe this fragrance as bright, and how the amber, tobacco, and patchouli work to enhance that, along with the fragrance’s longevity. You’d think it would be the exact opposite, you know?

As I am in the market for several new summer fragrances, I will be seriously considering Montale’s, “Blue Matcha”, as a serious contender because of its overall unique qualities. I’ll definitely be looking to get a decant of this, and soon.

Thanks again for your efforts and the content!

  • This fragrance has insane ingredients and a perfect bottle that can match for anyone tastes
    Absolutely love it!

  • Dwayne Alexander says:

I enjoyed Steven’s review of this scent. He gave a very thorough assessment of the fragrance. I particularly liked how Steven spoke of its versatility. It also appears very unique as a tea based scent. I enjoy this house and would love to participate in the giveaway!

  • I want to try this fragrance. From Steven’s review, I’m thinking that this fragrance is an interesting fragrance to wear during the summer season. I’d like to see if this fragrance can cause me to see what Indonesia is like. From Michelyn’s intro. I got an understanding of: what this fragrance is like and the butterfly pea flower. I live in the U.S.A.

  • Rex Mercado says:

I would say this is a paradox. A tea-inspired frag but does not smell like any other tea frag. A frag that has citrus in it with warm undertones. Those descriptions themselves are enough to pique a fraghead’s interest for a unique scent but at the same time remain mass-appealing to the general public.

  • Catherine A May says:

Love the in depth review of this fragrance! I enjoyed the article and love montale fragrances!

  • This scent intrigues me because I like tea notes in fragrances and the way Steven described it as a tea fragrance that performs I have to try it. Michelyn says it’s not linear I’m interested to see skin will bring out the different notes

  • Brad Woolslayer says:

I enjoyed reading about the unique ingredient of blue matcha, which is derived from butterfly pea flower. I also enjoyed seeing that Steven received compliments on this unique fragrance that isn’t similar to most of the other Montale releases. I live in Maryland USA.

  • Tea notes, particularly matcha, are some of my favorites. Steven indicates Blue Matcha is good year round, which is perfect. I also like the creaminess factor in this perfume. I would love a bottle! ~Indiana, USA

  • Randy Beaver says:

I really enjoyed this introduction to this fragrance and learning that it is a new fresh and invigorating fragrance that can be used in my collection of spring and summer fragrances and would stand out from the rest with the tea and butterfly petals as notes.

  • Helena Shinkoda says:

I love Montale house! Spring is here and I think it would be perfect for the season! I would love to try it!!! I’m from Massachusetts, USA.

  • GennyLeigh says:

I’ve never heard of blue matcha either but I have heard of butterfly pea flower and have seen food colored with the powder. It is a really pretty shade of blue. I love tea scents and the combination with the fruit, patchouli and amber sounds lovely. Great description as always, Steve! Love the blue Montale bottle. MD, USA.

  • Justin Stradling says:

I really enjoyed Steven’s review of this fragrance. I love the the note of tea in fragrances they are very soothing and uplifting. This seems like a really good fragrance as montale has some very great fragrances.

  • Matcha is one of my favorite notes in perfumery and in life in general! I drink a cup of matcha green tea every day, it relaxes me and I know it’s good for my health. It’d be great to smell like it, and Montale is one of my favorite houses. Thanks Cafleurebon and Steven for the quality review and article!

  • Great review as always by Steven. Have been following his Chanel for many year. Thank you for the opportunity for the giveaway sounds amazing love the house of Montale.

  • Perfume_Madness says:

I’m totally into tea fragrances and Steven did a great description! Its always interesting to think how fragrances smell different on an individuals skin like Michelyn said.
    USA.

  • millertyme says:

Great review! I’m definitely very interested in a more warm weather centric montale fragrance!

  • I’d like to try this Blue Matcha. Sounds interesting and unique. Maybe mainly for the warm weather days. Thanks, ca

  • Nicquis Thomas says:

I love tea, but never smelled it as a fragrance! The breakdown Redolescence gave sounds like it can be nice to try out!

  • punchflower says:

I like Steven’s description of the fragrance as fruity tea with that warmth underneath, and am curious if on my skin it would be more floral like Michelle mentioned! Blue pea flower tea is used for making fancy boba tea around here, and I love smooth leather and patchouli undertones, so this would be an incredibly cool scent to try. From US.

  • Andrew DiPaola says:

Great review Steven, nothing but class.
So weird you just reviewed this because about a two weeks ago I found out this existed. I love anything matcha and green tea related. I’d love to win this bottle, as I love tea in fragrances (Wulong Cha by Nishane is amazing) appreciate the chance!

  • From the written intro I learned blue matcha is from a flower not tea. So no wonder I never heard of it. From the video I got that the fragrance was versatile and unisex. US

  • Michael Reed says:

Love the idea of a classy, high performance scent that carries a tea note, without being overpoweringly bitter.
Looking for something that can add to the aura of gravitas in meetings that will be unique and inviting.

  • I love the way Matcha smells and I love the wat yerba mate smalls. I also love the way they taste. Combining the two in a fragrance has peaked my interest, and combined with Montale’s workmanship I imagine this fragrance to be fantastic! Thank you for the review its always a pleasure to hear your opinion on any fragrance.

  • Well, I had never heard of blue matcha. Michelyn has turned me on to something new. It seems that Steven didn’t know about it either, but that didn’t hinder his scent description. I’d love to get my hands on this. I am in the US

  • So happy that redolessence reviewed the fragrance. I’ve been keeping it on my wishlist since it came out because I love matcha and the blue matcha is so unique. This just solidifies my want for it into a need

  • As I have matcha meditation by replica. The note in this montale blue matcha seem more mature and love to have one.

  • Constantine says:

Love the review! I’ve never tried this one or any of the Montale fragrances but I’ve only heard good things. The part I found most intriguing was how the fragrance is evocative of a trip through Indonesia.

  • TRavis2014s says:

Redolessence is my go-to whenever it comes to deciding what my next fragrance should be and I think he helped me do just that! The idea of being able to have a fragrance as unique as this would be amazing! Montale’s eye-catching design and unique note composition is what really draws me to this product. With top notes of Citrus, Matcha, and Black current. Heart notes of Cedar, Patchouli, Tobacco, and Leather. And base notes of Mate and Ambergris really help me envision what a journey through Indonesia would be like. The idea of having a product that excites people whenever they look, read (note comp), and smell, is when you know that whoever orchestrated this masterpiece is passionate about what they do. Great Job!

  • The presentation and these notes really transport me to a super fresh alien juicy paradise.

  • I love the idea of the tea mixed with the floraly/fruity (depending on chemistry) with the undertone of the darker notes like leather, tobacco etc. would love to try this

  • As usual Steven’s reviews are usually very detailed. Excited to try a summer focused Montale and also important to note that the citrusy notes are noticeably on some folks since Steven didn’t experience that. Anyway, Montale are usually strong sounds like Blue Matcha is in that category as well, even if that is not the most important factor in a fragrance.
    Maryland, US.

  • Seems interesting! With the notes it doesn’t seem to be a summer scent. Would love to try it. It would be my first from the house of Montale.

  • So happy that Steven reviewed the fragrance. I’ve been keeping it on my wishlist since it came out because I love matcha and the blue matcha is so unique. Love that the way he talks about the fragrance actually gives me a good picture in my head of what it would smells like. Michelyn’s introduction of the fragrance is exactly why I was so interested in the fragrance in the first place. The difference in what each smelled on them makes me wonder what it’ll be like on me. This just solidifies my want for it into a need

  • I have been looking for a new summer scent for awhile now and this is something I’m definitely interested in. Never heard of blue matcha myself but Steven description as it smelling like Indonesia has my attention. Hopefully I get more of the scent profile on my skin that Michelyn got with the citrus, black currant and amber.

  • petergigov says:

Getting compliments is important to me, and one of the reasons to get, or not certain fragrance. One thing is for certain, Montale fragrances do get me lots of positive attention, at least in my surroundings . All their fragrances i know, are also quite powerful, projecting for hours.
Even if the opening is a playful, Blue Matcha is not a childish fragrance. The cedar, leather, and mate tea is what makes it so appealing to me. Hopefully tobacco will be stronger on my skin, compared to how it smells on Michelyn.
I was already aware of what blue matcha is .
My favorite Montale is Sensual Instinct, but the one that gets me most compliments is Wild Pears.
    Exciting giveaway, USA

Hi y’all! I’m excited about this giveaway! My curiosity peaked when Steven described it as being “luminous” with hints of solar notes! I also like that it’s slightly creamy. I’m on a mission to find my signature scent that’s unique..so, maybe this could be the one! Michelyn said that the florals pulled more on her skin, so that’s a bonus bc I’m a female as well. I liked learning about the crushed butterfly pea flower and how it turns into a blue powder..hence the fragrance name! Very cool and interesting sounding scent! THANKS FOR A CHANCE TO TRY THIS!! I’m in the U.S.

Montale is a house with vast amount of loyal followers , for a good reason I believe. If you’re looking for powerhouse fragrances, Montale can offer a great variety. I own Chocolate Greedy , Honey Aoud, and my favorites Intense Cafe, and Ristretto Intense Cafe .
Blue Matcha is different , compared to the four I own, green, juicy, vibrant and who doesn’t like versatility, longevity and drinking matcha tea , I do .
I like Michelyn clarification in the intro , about what exactly Blue Matcha is , I do drink matcha , I mean green matcha , the blue one I’ve seen in organic foods stores, but never tried it myself.
Thank you Steven, Michelyn and Europerfumes

  • Today I learned blue matcha is a thing—thanks Michelyn! I haven’t spent nearly enough time with tea fragrances, but one with notes of tobacco, mate, leather, and cedar piques my interest. Also, Steven’s review got me thinking about spring and summer fragrances. I rarely choose my morning spray based on the season—instead going by mood—but I see the appeal. Thank you both for the detailed review and breakdown of this Montale fragrance.

    I’m in the midwest, USA.

  • “I am writing this so you can see that everyone has a unique scent print and that this is not a linear perfume that is going to smell the same on everyone.”

Well said, I 100% agree. People body chemistry, skin, perception , taste is different , “try before you buy” was always my fragrance motto .
Matcha could be the next big thing , at least in the niche/indie perfumery with Le Labo , Montale , and the already popular Je Ne Sais Quoi by Teo Cabanel , a lot more will be released soon I believe.
I was not aware what exactly blue matcha is , thanks to Michelyn for the explanation. I have it at home , my girlfriend eats one of those trendy smoothie bowls 3-4 times a day, at least once with blue matcha.
Blue Matcha i don’t know, but I’ll definitely sample, complex non-linear tea fragrances are exactly what I’m looking for, when I’d like to buy new tea scent. The tobacco, cedar and cassis i believe would give the fragrance certain level of uniqueness, without losing the comforting ,and welcoming factors.
Montale is one of my favorite houses – atm i do own 12 bottles. Not sure what’s my favorite one , Dark Purple maybe.
All profiles I already follow, @waltherp99bg
    Thanks a lot

I loved Michelyn’s Intro and Steven’s review of Montale Blue Matcha. I loved learning about what Blue Matcha and how it’s made which is grinding butterfly pea flower into fine powder which is blue in color. I like this isn’t a typical tea fragrance and has some unique qualities about it such as Blue Matcha, Mate, etc but still incorporates a bold ambery, leather, and tobacco DNA found in most Montale fragrances along with stellar performance. I always love seeing Steven’s detailed, well spoken, and passionate reviews. I am from the USA.

  • What I enjoyed most about Michelyn’s review was that I learned what blue matcha actually is. I have never heard of it before, and it sounds very unique. As for Steven’s review, I love how he goes so in-depth with the notes. It really helps to get a good feel of the fragrance. This one sounds very interesting, and the color of the bottle is gorgeous. Kind regards from Indiana, USA.

Thanks for the great review Steven an the fantastic intro Michelyn. It was cool to see what blue matcha is.

I love how Montale has taken the concept of blue matcha and weavd it in with intetesting notes such as Mate, leather, black tobacco etc to create a luxurious and wonderful fragrancec.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Honestly I love the sound of this one and great for the Tropics. As per usual Steven does a lovely job at giving a clear picture of what to expect from it.

Always wanted to try this house. Thanks for the great reviews. Always in depth and help me decipher what I want to try next! New York , Usa.

  • Blue Matcha surprised me, elegant, versatile fragrance I need to know. I like how the is opens up more fresh and fruity, but ends up with matcha and leather. Fragrance with an edge.
Every time I think about Montale I think about top performance. Vanilla Cake lasts forever on me , Sensual Instinct is even stronger. Bought the second one because of Sebastian contribution for Cafleurebon
Thanks for the draw , and for the info Michelyn shared with us about blue matcha as ingredient.

  • Blue matcha tea in the eyes of the tea purists , is not a true tea , but rather a tisane , herbal tea
Butterfly Pea Flower is used for food coloring for ages , and especially in South East Asia for variety of dishes, desserts , and drinks.
The fact that Blue Matcha is inspired by Indonesia comes to no surprise to me.
Nam Dok Anchan is refreshing drink, based on buttery pea flower that popular again in all South East Asia countries.
Steven’s take on Blue Matcha, and Michelyn introduction reminded me of making , and later on eating Green Matcha blueberries and mulberry tarts , drinking Nam Dok Anchan ,while sitting on a leather couch and someone smoking Cuban cigar near by , all combined is how I imagine Blue Matcha would smell.
Michelyn intro shows well how fragrances do smell different, on different people. No matter the different opinions, both Michelyn and Steven told us about one sophisticated, nice smelling fragrance.
My favorite Montale is Dark Purple.
Appreciate the the introduction, the review , and the giveaway campaign

Wonderful review Steven! What I enjoyed about Steven’s YouTube review of Montale Blue Matcha is how thoroughly he describes the progression of the fragrance, how one note blends and moves into another from opening to heart to base. With Steven’s review, I now know exactly what to expect from the fragrance.

What I enjoyed about Michelyn’s introduction is learning that the blue matcha is made not from tea leaves but from the dried and crushed petals of the butterfly pea flower. I love the scent of pea blossoms so this fragrance sounds very interesting to me. I live in the US.

  • More introductions please ! When there are two different options, not necessarily opposing, but still different, i find the reading, and watching the video way more interesting.
I like both the blue, and the green matcha .
Montale Blue Matcha is one unconventional fragrance, I received a sample with one of my latest purchases. If does not smell like your typical tea fragrance, Steven said the same thing. What I find really rare is that it doesn’t smell like Montale fragrance either.
Predominantly I smell leather, cedar, tobacco and then , the least mate tea. The fragrance is also really powdery.
I actually find the smell sexy, and seductive.
The 3 Montale fragrances i own are Chocolate Greedy , Oudmazing and Vanilla Extasy
    Lovely opportunity

I have a bunch of fragrances in my collection. None of them contain a tea note so I’m interested in that alone. Secondly, I unfortunately do not own any Montale Fragrances either. Usually before I make a Niche purchase I look to see if Redolesene has reviewed it and see if it’s bottle or sample worthy. With all that being said, I am very interested in this fragrance.
