You know Orion always comes up sideways.

Throwing a leg up over our fence of mountains,

And rising on his hands, he looks in on me.” ~ Robert Frost, from the Star-Splitter

Clara Molloy (the Creative Director behind Memo Paris, (read her Creative Directors in Perfumery story here) and her husband John are an adventurous couple, as their prodigious body of work implies. Together with the instinctive composition of their house nose perfumer Aliénor Massenet, they endeavor to evoke vivid landscapes they have treasured, encapsulate stolen moments in natural settings. Their latest Cuirs Nomades release Memo Paris Oriental Leather pays homage to the bliss of night-gazing in Oman’s Wahiba Sands (also known as the Sharqiya Sands) under the Milky Way canopy. The vastness of Arabian desert and firmament provided their impetus. Oriental Leather simply glows like the blazing morningstar ascending a duneswept horizon.

Memo Paris Oriental Leather review

Few among us are as well-traveled as the Molloys. Their wanderlust is prodigious; I’m personally humbled by it – and would be over the moon to have visited half as many countries and cultures as they. Not having had such an opportunity, from my view Memo Paris perfumes feel conceptual: an emotion, a vision is fleshed out and rendered fragrant in service to the experiential. Such is the case regarding Oriental Leather. Is it Oriental? Most definitely – but not, perhaps, in a manner many have come to associate with Oriental. Is it leathery? It is – but this particular leather is neither as raw as Memo Paris Irish Leather or as suede-glovelike as other leathers with which we are familiar.  Memo Paris Oriental Leather has a fragrant refrain that haunts us as we attempt to unveil its kinship with perfumes past. There’s a Proustian moment.

How do we smell perfume with our brain

olfactory processing via cogblog, colby.edu (you can read Ida’s article on “Why I smell: or how i learned to love my Amygdala here

For several reasons, the great Guerlains spring to mind: Jicky parfum (1889, Aimé Guerlain) and L’Heure Bleue (1912, Jacques Guerlain) – both classified as Orientals, the former as fougère, the latter as floral. We are smelling bases exuding warmth and utterly luxurious. Each perfume contains benzoin and vanilla, for one. From Jicky we are gifted leather, lavender, cinnamon and patchouli. From L’Heure Bleue, the spectre of anise; in lieu of clove, coriander, cinnamon and pimento leaf behave as ‘grace notes’, imparting a toothsome spiciness. It is these elements which spark memory in the fondest sense. This is what is intended by the term ‘fragrant refrain’. Here the resemblance ends. Both Jicky and L’Heure Bleue demonstrate (to my nose) an interchange between coolness and warmth, the moist and dry. (Doesn’t it fascinate you how fragrances can be composed of similar materials and differ so greatly?)

via Memo Paris

Similar to these Guerlain beauties, lovely Memo Oriental Leather begins cool and warms over time – but it feels dry, desert-arid, in fact. I can detect no strains of moisture, no Miriam’s Well in it. The spices of the souk skew slightly masculine (if one were to assign gender to spice, which is patently silly in itself) in the presence of leather and lavender.

Geranium leaf has a wonderful legend which interweaves well: it is said that geraniums first emerged from the place the Prophet Mohammed hung his shirt to dry in the sun (shall we go then to the myth that geraniums also flourish near witches’ cottages?)! Just thinking about these things warms my heart… It seems as if we have traveled a considerable distance without realizing the inherent serendipity. I never anticipated as I sat down at table that this was where I would land. Truly the journey became the destination.

Thank you, Europerfumes – for my beautiful tester bottle; I will cherish it.  My nose is my own…

  • I thoroughly enjoyed the reading that the bottle contain warm, dry notes that hold a presence around the wearer. I can already smell its hypnotizing, warm, surrounding cloud. Commenting from FL, USA.

  • Memo is a excellent fragrance house. I have read a lot about them. Personally, I have never tried one. The way they describe the blend of leather and lavendar makes it sound like a fascinating scent. Thanks for the draw. From USA

  • What appealed to me about Ida’s review was the part about the myth of geraniums flourishing near witches’ cottages. Spooky and just in time for Halloween! I don’t have a favorite Memo scent because I’ve yet to try one, but hopefully that changes soon. Cheers from Indiana, USA.

Ida’s review of Oriental Leather would surely make anyone fall in love with the scent. I can already smell its hypnotizing, warm, surrounding cloud.

I love Memo Paris scent fragrances and they have quite a few wonderful ones and African Leather is my favorite from the house.

  • I’m really intrigued by the geranium and patchouli notes in Oriental Leather. Favorite Memo Paris fragrance is African Leather. VA, USA.

  • Memo makes some gorgeous fragrances. As a lover of leather scents, this one is a must-try, and the evocative review makes me even more interested. I’m in the US.

I love that Oriental Leather pays homage to the bliss of night-gazing in Oman’s Wahiba Sands under the Milky Way canopy. I love that Memo encapsulates certain instances in certain cultures from around the world. I really love this house with my favorites being African and Irish Leather. FL, USA.

  • I enjoyed the paragraph speaking about Jicky and L’Heure Bleue. I don’t have a favorite from this house at the moment. US

  • As a gardener, I’m very familiar with the scent of geranium leaf. I would love to see how it pairs with the lavender oil. I’m not familiar with the pimento leaf note. Perhaps it adds a little spiciness. Thanks for the generous draw. USA

  • Shamrock1313 says:

Sounds fantastic – already love Italian Leather, Irish Leather and Winter Palace – this sounds like another winner. Great info.

I can’t possibly NOT be attracted to anything to do with Oman as my two older kids are half Omani. The beauty of the country is unparalleled and any scent reminiscent of it in any shape or form is a winner in my book. Love the bottle! My favorite Memo is Irish or Russian Leather. I’m in the US.

  • Nathan Cherry says:

I enjoyed how Ida broke down what an oriental is in order to help us understand Oriental Leather’s scent profile, and her evocation of the desert. I love Memo, my favorites being African Leather, French Leather, and Luxor Oud. Alabama, USA.

  • Comparing a modern perfume to vintage Guerlains and explaining why I need this now! Lol
Please enter me in the Memo PARIS Oriental Leather contest. My favorite is African leather

  • HiMyNameIsWaste says:

“Toothsome spiciness” sounds wonderful. My favorite Memo so far is Irish Leather, but I’d be happy to win this bottle and change my mind.

    I live in Nashville, TN.

  • ScentitarFragrance says:

What appealed to me most is that this fragrance sounds familiar and even comforting, but seems like a step into the vintage, artisan and perhaps sacred. I also love that the writer mentioned the notes relating or being similar to other famous and lovely fragrances. This helps us understand the nuances of the notes and is something I love to do as well ! My favorite Memo Paris scent to far is Siberian Leather ! USA resident, fingers crossed !

  • Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could all sit in the desert and look up at the huge expanse of stars in the night sky. What an image. I have no Memo scents in my collection, but this would be a good place to start. Thank you Ida for a beautiful review and a generous draw. I’m in the USA

  • I love the concept of this fragrance starting out cool but warming over time, yet remaining dry throughout the wear. I’m only familiar with Winter Palace and African Leather from this house, but would love to become more familiar with Memo Paris. Thanks for the review!
    I’m in the USA.

  • Thank you Ida for the rather visual review. I find it appealing when reviewers can mention fragrances from other houses for context and in this case one of my favorites, Guerlain, is featured. My favorite Memo Paris fragrance is Italian Leather. I’m in USA

  • I like the idea of an Oriental Leather. In the review spices are mentioned as is lavender and in the notes there is vanilla and benzoin listed, all of which with the leather sounds great to me. I haven’t been able to try anything from Memo Paris yet but look forward to doing so. In the USA. Thanks for the draw.

  • fazalcheema says:

Oriental Leather, like other in Memo leather series, is also a fragrance of contrasts that reveals different sides such as cool and warm though it is a dry composition, reflecting the name. I am in US

  • It is interesting to me how fragrances can be composed of similar materials and differ so greatly. This sounds great. I have African Leather, which I really enjoy. US.

  • Any comparison to Guerlain has my interest. I love a cool beginning; intrigued about the warm, dry ending. I live in the USA.

  • The description of the leather in this is intriguing. A leather that is neither raw nor suede like? And I love that “the journey became the destination” it is such a joy when that happens. USA.

  • I love the Guerlain fragrances mentioned, so the parallel to Memo Paris Oriental Leather makes me want to try this out. Starts off cool, then warms up, with geranium, leather and lavender accords – sounds very intriguing! My favorite Memo Paris scent is Eau de Memo. Regards from Boston, USA.

  • Love the review. Didn’t know the bit about geraniums and folklore as well as the comparison to two classic Guerlains. I’m intrigued. I’m a fan of African, Italian, and Russian leathers from Memo. I’m from the US.

  • Great review. Your review confirms what I have heard about this new release in that it is not Oriental as we have come to expect from perfume and it really isn’t leather that way either. This intrigues me as those are two types of perfume I really enjoy. Thanks for the giveaway I am in VA, USA. My favorite from this house is Russian Leather so the starts cool aspects is encouraging.

  • I love leather as a fragrance note and the description of the dry down as desert-arid dry is very appealing. It took me a while to learn to love the great Guerlain perfumes, Jicky and L’Heure Bleue but now they are two of my favorites. I’m excited to try Memo’s interpretation of cool v. warm and moist v dry. Great review Ida! I’m in the US.

  • Thoroughly enjoyed the article. Beautiful photos and I’d love to be able to travel the world as well. To meet people and learn the different cultures. I like the sound of Oriental Leather. Haven’t got the chance to try a MEMO Paris fragrance. Thanks for the giveaway. Ca

This sounds great. A dry, spicy leather would be perfect for the colder months. I’ve only tried African Leather and adore it. I really want to try all of the Memo leathers now. Thank you for the review and draw. I’m in the US.

  • wildevoodoo says:

Ida, you are such a spectacularly evocative writer. I love everything about this review! The quote from Robert Frost (even drawing upon Orion, the first constellation I learned to identify and my eternal favorite), the background of the fascinating Molloys, the Proustian recollections of classics stirred by the notes and arid characteristics of the fragrance. I also loved learning about both of the legends concerning geraniums, neither of which I’d heard before! I have not tried anything from Memo Paris yet. I am in the US 🙂

  • Oriental leather sounds so interesting. From the pimento leaf to the geranium leaf, the scents sounds amazing. I like Granada from this line. Would love to try this one. Thank you Ida, USA

  • wallygator88 says:

Grew up in Oman and I’ve been to Wahiba sands a few times. I love how the stories intertwined with the notes. I do wish they had notes of Frankincense/Incense because Dhofar after all is part of the famous Frankinsensce trail.

Thanks for the fabulous pictures Ida, it brought back memories.

I’ve unfortunately not had a chance to smell a Memo Paris scent before.

    Love from Madison, WI, USA

  • I’m enjoying my leather fragrances now that we’ve got cooler weather. I’m intrigued that this calls to mind L’Heure Bleue which is one of my all time favorite fragrances. My favorite Memo is Granada which my daughter wears. It reminds me of a wonderful weekend we spent in San Francisco. Thank you for the review and the draw, I’m in the US.

Because of this marvelous review my expectations are pretty high . CooI and warm spicy Leather, cinnamon, cloves and vanilla. I’m really drown to similar combinations.
Other than a sample of Tamarindo i’m not familiar with Memo Paris , but after such a vivid review i will order more samples. I need to try the one Sebastian reviewed called Winter Palace, and the other one Ida Meister reviewed, related to Out of Africa book called Moon Fever .
Beautiful giveaway – thanks a lot.

Great review. I love the geranium folklore and love most of Memo’s offerings, with African Leather being my favorite. Thanks for the draw! -USA

  • Spice, herbs and dry dry dry desert, with cool to warm. Also, the bottle/logo design is beautiful! I had been working on a composition just like this last year. —Kelly Moss, MO, USA

  • Leather and spices are notes in some of my favorite fragrances. I really enjoyed Ida’s take and it was interesting to hear how dry she thought the fragrance is. My favorite Memo would be Irish Leather. USA

  • Good review. This sentence in the review really piqued my interest in this creation; “Oriental Leather simply glows like the blazing morningstar ascending a duneswept horizon.” Cheers from Oregon.

  • I had the pleasure of smelling a few Memo Paris fragrances when I was at Osswald boutique , looking for something else. Oriental Leather I have not smelled there, but at the end end up buying the fragrance I originally intended to, and also Memo Tiger’s Nest . I had to , because boy oh boy it’s impressive one. Later I have sampled African Leather, and I do admit it is beautiful, but unfortunately I get average performance from it. Tiger’s Nest works wonders through. Over 10 hours of longevity and 3-4 hours of strong projection.
Oriental Leather I’m interested in because it sounds like a classy Leather fragrance, with cloves and lavender, and also vanilla to brighten up the composition.
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign

I think the question, rather, is what does not appeal to me from Ida’s review? I have said it before and I have to say it again…. everything Ida writes I am captivated by. I love your work and truly enjoyed the read! Memo is a brand that caught my attention the day I read about Irish Leather. I read an article or a review (I can’t quite remember which) back in 2013 and I knew this would be a fragrance I had to have. I bought a bottle, and not only is it one of the most beautiful presentations, it is one of the most beautiful (yet raw) scents I own. The mate mixed with the juniper berries and leather just won me over. It is so raw and earthy, but sensual at the same time. It is brisk and warming all at once. It is a hard scent to describe but still one of my favorites of all time. The picture of the horses running free and the castle in the background that they use on Memo’s own site won me over…. It goes perfectly with the scent and I am transported to that very place every time I wear it. Sorry, this review was based on Oriental Leather, not Irish Leather, but I guess what I was getting at, is that if Oriental Leather is half as great as my beloved Irish Leather, I am definitely in! The way Ida has painted this beautiful picture of this beauty, I am in already! Thank you for taking the time to read my lengthy comment…. I do appreciate it! Thank you for the great read, as always, Ida, and thank you to team CaFleureBon and Europerfumes for this amazing and very generous opportunity! I live in Delaware, US. I hope everyone has a great rest of the day!

  • Thank you Ida for this wonderful review! It was interesting to read short reviews about legendary Jicky and L’Heure Bleue. Unfortunately, I have never tasted Jicky. I like memo perfumes, but more Kedu, Irish Leather. i like leather in perfumery very much and looking forward to test this new leather with lavender, patchouli and vanilla. USA

  • Reading Ida’s review elicited a wanderlust within me as well. I really appreciate her knack at taking readers to different locales, even different times. Thus her description is so apt and really makes me want to experience that star-studded, magnificent vista on the Wahiba Sands in Oman. It would be wonderful to experience such a perfume that evokes such wonder and memories buried in the past. My favorites from Memo Paris are African Leather and Shams Oud. As always, thanks so much for the giveaway! I’m in Oregon, US.

  • Ida and her vivid reviews 🙂
Images of me being in some leather shop in the Middle East, with real green moss on the walls came to mind.
    I so want to try it… now . I’ll get a sample .
My husband owns French Leather by Memo , and now i’m using it from time to time,so you could say i own it hah. I’ve never smelled anything else from Memo , but I should to catch up .
    Thanks Ida
    Cheers from VA USA

  • Sounds fantastic love a good oriental and the addition of anise has my interest for sure. I love every memo I have tried especially italian leather. thanks for the giveaway! From Az in the USA

  • I love that the fragrance begins cool and warms over time. I love that it pays homage to the bliss of night-gazing in Oman’s Wahiba Sand.
I do not have a favorite Memo Paris scent.

  • Excellent review by Ida. I love the way the fragrances starts off cool and warms up after time while staying dry. I am a leather lover of fragrances like African Leather. Thanks for the amazing draw! I live in CA, USA.

  • Dry leather with lavender , and spices ? I know we’re in late 2019 , but being a barber for a long period of time, I’m used to relate similar fragrances mostly to men. Each to his own I guess. I’ll gladly wear Oriental Leather.
“Geranium leaf has a wonderful legend”
I didn’t know about the legend Ida mentioned, but as aromatherapy fan , and geranium oil user I have to say geranium is grown in many regions, almost all over the world. There are many varieties and strains of the flower , and each variety differs in scent , sometimes by a lot. Just like with roses, I think brands should clarify what variety and strain they used.
African Leather is the best Memo Paris in my opinion .
Enjoyed the review , and thanks for the draw.

  • You had me at the great Guerlains! Swoon. My fave Memo is Shams Oud. It is badass.I’m in USA.

  • I love that ida is a story teller with those interesting facts and legends. I like all of the leather offerings from Memo Paris. Unfortunately I did not have a chance to smell all of them.

  • Michael Prince says:

Ida, great review of Memo Paris Oriental Leather. It sounds like a beautiful oriental leather fragrance with tons of spices, resins, leather, and vanilla…whats not to love. Ida can really paint the perfect picture of how a fragrance smells. My favorite Memo Paris fragrance is African Leather. I am from the USA.

  • WOW!… This new perfume demonstrates an “interchange between coolness and warmth, the moist and dry” as Jicky and L’Heure Bleue- it is so interesting. And plus little masculine spices and lavender- Sounds good.
From Memo Paris I like African and Italian Leather.

I am a big fan of modern throwback fragrances. My favorite Memo is African Leather. I’m in the USA.

  • Interesting fragrance should be this Oriental Leather … especially when it’s made by Alienor Massenet. She’s pretty famous nose with some masterpiece level creations. Own 7 fragrances she composed, 2 Memo Paris included. Natural smelling spicy leather , leaning just a bit masculine , with good performance … what not to like about Oriental Leather? Checks the boxes quite perfectly .
From Memo Paris i do own Granada , and i’m at the very end of of my African Leather bottle. Both Alienor Massenet creations.
    I do follow all of you on IG @cafleurebon , @idameister , @Offical_ europerfumes , @memo.paris , and also please never forget the creator @alienormassenet .
    Top opportunity, thanks. USA

  • Nice review on one of Memo’s leathers of which Russian Leather is my favorite. I appreciate the opportunity to win! I live in the USA.

  • I’m super curious about Oriental Leather. Fantastic review by Ida Meister. Almost felt like I’m in Oman in the middle of Wahiba Sands , inhaling the amalgam of sand ,leather and the nearby spice market.
After reading Ida time travel review of Moon Fever , I bought 4 Memo Paris samples – Moon Fever, African Leather, Tiger’s Nest and Tamarindo . My overall rating of the four:
    1. Tiger’s Nest
    2. African Leather
    3. Moon Fever
    4. Tamarindo
Thank you Ida , and thanks to Europerfumes for the opportunity.

I like how this review engaged with concepts that are both abstract and concrete at the same time: cool and warm; moist and dry. Perfume is of course wet, but can still evoke dryness. It might be physically cold but can still evoke warmth. And I liked how these concepts were related to the experience of the desert at night. Nice job! From NC, USA.

  • Excellent review by Ida and I enjoyed reading about geranium leaf and it’s ties to the Prophet Mohammed! I also enjoyed being able to be transported to a place with scent and this fragrance house is known for that. I love the warm and dry notes in this one and I have wanted to visit the Wahiba sands. My favorite line was: “It seems as if we have traveled a considerable distance without realizing the inherent serendipity. I never anticipated as I sat down at table that this was where I would land. Truly the journey became the destination.” Thanks for the giveaway and I live in the US!

  • As a Muslim woman , the reference to Prophet Muhammad made my heart sing ! I’d love to own this bottle and I thank you guys for giving us an opportunity to win one . I love lavender and leather so this just might become my signature scent .
