MATIERE PREMIERE Encens Suave Extrait (Aurelien Guichard) 2024 review +Resinous Giveaway

MATIERE PREMIERE Encens Suave Extrait

“Matière première” means “raw material” in French. It is the starting point of the brand’s creative process. Fragrances by MATIERE PREMIERE are just like their central raw material: they have no gender, they combine great power and diffusion with a sense of comfort, they allow you to comprehend what you are wearing, and smelling them will bring unique emotions. -Aurelien Guichard from my recent interview -Michelyn

Aurelien Guichard of Matière Premiere

Aurelien Guichard Courtesy of the Perfumer

I asked Aurelien about the new line of MATIERE PREMIERE Extraits. He said, “The extraits share one common creative approach for all: a higher concentration, a higher dosage of the central main ingredient, Resin Incense Somalia and the addition of a guest ingredient to bring a new facet to the note. The guest ingredient of MATIERE PREMIERE Encens Suave Extrait is Amber. I love the ambery, gold and brown hues of an incense rock. With this amber note made of resins, a classic in French Perfumery, I wanted to amplify the impression of warm richness in Encens Suave.”-Aurelien Guichard

  • I was aware of the new line coming and knowing how strong the originals are, I can only imagine that this one will be a beast. Encens Suave is a very incense/resinous fragrance with very high quality and raw materials. Yes, all the fragrances are definitely unisex and revolve around a main ingredient material for each one. I’m also learning that not only is the dosage getting increased for these new fragrances but also a new guest ingredient is getting introduced to each one of the extraits. Steven is right if you got 8 hours (which I have smelled the original, it’s more like 10 to me), you’ll probably get 12-14 hours on this new creation. Thanks a lot to Twisted Lilly for hosting this giveaway as these fragrances are a gem! I’m located in the USA.

Steven always does such a great job of describing fragrances. The incense notes with then amped up amber sound just amazing. I love Matiere Premiere perfumes and how they focus on a raw ingredient and make it absolutely stunning. Thanks for the giveaway. Located in Utah.

  • Aurélien Guichard’s approach to perfumery is truly fascinating. His dedication to raw materials and simplicity, as emphasized in his Matière Première collection, sets him apart in the fragrance world. I love how he describes the use of a single central ingredient, saying, “Fragrances by MATIERE PREMIERE are just like their central raw material: they have no gender, they combine great power and diffusion with a sense of comfort.” His deep connection to nature and the organic farming of his own ingredients, like roses and tuberoses, gives his work a remarkable authenticity. This level of dedication to quality really resonates, especially when he speaks about his creative journey, influenced by his artistic upbringing and desire to collaborate with diverse creatives.

As for Steven’s review, I found it insightful and engaging. He really captured the essence of Encens Suave Extrait, highlighting how the rich amber adds depth to the incense, amplifying its warmth. I enjoyed his breakdown of how the extrait format elevates the experience. Both Aurélien’s creative process and Steven’s review show how much passion goes into every bottle.

  • I love the original, when you apply it it’s like it’s burning, like fire, I feel like it’s the fragrance of the Human Torch from the fantastic four, I feel full of energy when I wear it but it’s also very comforting, what can I say it’s my favorite from the brand and my favorite incense fragrance of all time, nothing comes close, so you can understand my excitement for this one and the dark bottles woow! Thanks for the giveaway guys!!! My address is in the USA.

  • From the written opening I learned of this guest ingredient concept. From the video I learned about the incense notes involved and I haven’t had a new incensed-based frag in a while. I like those notes a lot. US

  • Love the original fragrance and can’t wait for the extrait! Twisted Lily is Fab for doing such a wonderful give away! Wonderful work by Michelyn and Steven! ❤️ I’d be a very happy winner!

  • I was unfamiliar with some of the ingredients Steven mentioned but it sounds like a beautiful addition for the fall season. I am not a fan of sharper fragrances, so it is enlightening to hear this is on the smoother side. Incense is beautiful when done right and it is great to hear how this built upon the original.

  • Still attempting to overcome my negative connotation with the word intense and catholic school. It was always used in occasions where they’d ask students to read a passage

  • Aurélien Guichard’s focus on enhancing the core material in MATIERE PREMIERE Encens Suave Extrait, especially with the addition of amber, brilliantly conveys the warmth and richness of incense. I appreciate how Steven highlights this ambery depth, complementing Guichard’s emphasis on French perfumery traditions. His creative process of elevating familiar notes through higher concentrations truly captures an intoxicating, yet comfortable balance. Michelyn’s interview showcases the intimate connection Guichard has with raw materials, amplifying their essence without overwhelming the senses. OBSESSED!

  • As always, Steven’s reviews are a pleasure to watch and full of interesting information. I am not familiar with this one but now I’m tempted. Thanks for the giveaway. US

  • ThatMulattoDude says:

For Steven, who is a next-level incense aficionado, to say this is one of the best incense fragrances on the market, that definitely creates impact. Reading about Monsieur Aurelien’s creative process, I’m intrigued by the cohesiveness with which he crafts his extraits. Obviously, the performance and sillage enhancement is nothing to discount either. I’d really enjoy having this in my collection. I fancy dark, complex scents. Appreciate the giveaway opportunity. Many blessings from Virginia, USA!

  • Great article…and great review of Steven. THE BRAND has a really great compositions. Looks like they are doing amazing things to the perfume community.

  • Steven mentioned “no rough edges,” which I like. I do like Encens Suave and would love to experience the extrait version. As a gardener, I do enjoy roses. I like this quote from Michelyn’s interview: “I decided to plant Rose Centifolia on our family domain in the Grasse region.” Thanks for another awesome article and draw. MI USA

  • I’ve never smelled any of Matiere Premiere’s fragrances, but I’ve long been attracted to what I’ve read about the line. In his interview with Michelyn, Aurélien Guichard describes the concept of Matiere Premiere: “We decided our goal would be to turn a raw material into a perfume, with a unique construction: use a very high dosage of one central, extremely qualitative and natural ingredient, then use only a few more, equally qualitative ingredients to facet the main one.” I generally love fragrances that feature one central note that other notes are there to support. And the Extraits line further emphasizes that central note, according to Guichard. Of course, one has to like the note itself. And in this case, the central note is one that I love: frankincense / olibanum. Steven’s description of this as one of the best incense fragrances on the market, period, has me intrigued. I’m in Oklahoma, USA. Thanks to Twisted Lilly for the generous draw!

  • I’m a big time fan of Aurelien Guichard, Matiere Premiere , and the idea of focusing on one primary ingredient. I know all regular line of fragrances by the brand, and just a few day ago from a guy that came from Pitti and brought me the extrait samples I was also able to smell Encens Suave Extrait and Santal Austral Extrait, the others will have to wait for a bit. If I have to rate my favorite ones, including the two extraits
    1. Encens Suave Extrait/Encens Suave
    2. Santal Austral Extrait/ Oud Seven
    3. Santal Austral
To me both versions of Encens Suave is unique amongst the Matiere Premiere portfolio, most of the other fragrances I find quite linear, but on the other hand the two Encens Suavedo change a lot on my skin.
Like Steven said the two versions are pretty similar, both do start with a huge blast of churchy incense , and maybe half an hour later all of a sudden both Encens Suave’s turns into sweet amber , with lots of resins, vanilla and some ground coffee powder lurking in the background, well dipping into gourmand territory. I saw Aurelien Guichard told Michelyn the amber is just an adder “guest ingredient” but …. well I don’t know if it’s my skin only , i know but the base alone could be called something like “Amber Suave” because what i perceive is way more sweet resinous amber than incense. I’m not talking about gooey sweet fragrance, still unexpectedly even the extrait is sweeter than expected. Quite a complex fragrances , I absolutely love both , both for people with acquired taste and a lot of experienced noses .
About Michelyn interview with Aurélien Guichard:

“There are quite a few classically trained perfumers who started their own brands. Why did you decide to do this?

Aurélien Guichard: I did not want to create a brand per se, but a “Maison de Parfumeur” – a house led by a Perfumer, whose mission is to push the limits in terms of olfactive quality and know-how. A house which places fragrance quality at the very center of each single step and consideration. A house which embodies that French Perfumery is all about extreme olfactive modernity and quality, far from the old-fashioned craft as some may see it.”

Doing your own thing is a risky, and also admirable strategy , love it.
    All profiles I already follow , @waltherp99bg
    Thanks a lot

  • I love that the perfumer centers the fragrance on a central note and builds from there. And Steven’s review made me drool! I also adore Benzoin and I truly love all kinds of incense and resins, especially in their true forms. As the weather gets cooler, this sounds like a must-try and will go on my list for that!

  • Big fan of Matiere Premiere! My favorite is Crystal Saffron, and I do enjoy Vanilla Powder as well. When I saw that the extrait collection came out, I was very intrigued to try them out. I’ve been wanting to try Encens Suave, and now I am excited to try the Encens Suave extrait as well, especially as the weather cools down!
I like that Aurelien is trying to bring out a new note to highlight the star note in this new collection. I’m a fan of Aurelien’s emphasis on quality ingredients, and I think this draws people to the house as quality ingredients and craftmanship extend to other areas of life (such as cooking). I’m a fan of this quote from Michelyn’s interview with Aurelien: “Not everyone can relate to a fragrance. However, when it comes to raw materials, anyone can appreciate the beauty of a citron, a sandalwood, a rose or a tuberose.”

Great video from Steven as always, never fails to make a fragrance alluring!

    Cheers from CA, USA

  • Most people I’d like to believe started off getting into fragrances through those common fresh citrusy shower gel-ish kind of fragrances at least that was true for me. But I was always more of a fan of those deep elusive darker bolder scents they just spoke to me and my personality more. Over the years of me growing my collection I’ve found that above all other notes the two that I love the most is a well done tea note, and a well done incense note simply just because of their versatility, and instead of just providing a certain smell these notes I find actually influence the whole fragrance in it’s entirety. I’m more than excited for this extrait and even if I don’t win I’ll buy it and indulge this winter. Redolessence I’ve been a fan for yearsss and every recommendation you’ve given I blind bought and was not disappointed

  • I didn’t know what the brands name meant in French. I didn’t know that about benzoin oil being thick. I love that it doesn’t have rough edges. It sure has some lasting power. If Steven says it is the best, I’m sure it’s a winner. Steven does know his incense as I’ve seen his other videos on that note. The original has been on my wish list for awhile. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • I love that this is an extrait. I have sampled a few from this house so I definitely would like to get my nose on this one for sure. I like how Michelyn said that Matiere Premiere “allows you to comprehend what you are wearing, and smelling them will bring unique emotions.”

I love incense and Steven say’s frankincense is the incense featured here.
Benzoin also seems to be the star in this fragrance & it sounds like it’s blended really well. Longevity of 10 + hours is wonderful, look forward to checking this out whether I win here or not.

  • Man, the original Encens Suave is a fragrance that excites me by mere mention of its name, so to discover that they are doing an extrait version has me absolutely elated. To top it off, I audibly yelped when I read through Aurelien’s comments and saw that his introduced amber to the formula as a mystery ingredient. He said it helps to give a nice warmth upon which the incense can rest, and I agree that warm amber and even vanillic notes can do wonders for the often cool tones of incense (I mean, look at Vanagloria and Vanhera from Laboratorio Olfattivo.). Steven seems genuinely excited about this one, lauding the rich benzoin and top quality frankincense. He also mentioned some medicinal tones, which is something I fell in love with thanks to Lune Feline Extrait. I could go on and on about things in this that have me intrigued, excited, and longing. Best of luck to all (though I selfishly really want this one lol). I live in NC, USA.

  • Thank you Michelyn for the intro and the link to the extended interview with Aurélien Guichard. Just like Steve, I’m a big fan of frankincense as it actually got me started on my fragrance journey. Encens Suave Extrait sounds amazing with the smoothness. I liked this quote from Aurélien Guichard from Michelyn’s interview “One year later, I was composing Unforgivable by Sean John (with Pierre Négrin, Dave Apel and Caroline Sabas in NY)” – I’m in USA.

  • Eris.can.swatch.kaos says:

Oh how I adore frankincense! I can still recall the scent of a pouch of frankincense my grandmother gifted me that she acquired in Israel on a trip in the 90’s. Encens Suave Extrait is on my list of must buys, though I’m not too familiar with the house, the perfumer is quite accomplished. A quote from Michelyn’s interview with Aurelien: “Fragrances by MATIERE PREMIERE are just like their central raw material: they have no gender, they combine great power and diffusion with a sense of comfort, they allow you to comprehend what you are wearing, and smelling them will bring unique emotions.”
I live in Oregon and am a Redolessence subscriber.

  • I have oud seven always wanted to try this never had chance base on review of the original and this very interesting scent to own

  • Aurelien had me at, “…a higher concentration, a higher dosage of the central main ingredient, Resin Incense Somalia…”
I love the raw ingredient -forward approach to Matiere Premiere Parfums allowing you to become one with the fragrance.
I appreciated Steven’s description and as always his attention to detail when describing the rich, frankincense top note clear down to the ambery dry down.
This sounds wonderful and I hope to find a sample soon!

  • Wow I had no idea they were growing and harvesting their own florals and many of their Ingredients! What a both brilliant and committed thing to do, how else can you be sure it’s harvested at the time you want? And to know the complexities of the note as you watch it mature? This just sounds amazing and an extrait is *chefs kiss* in my book!
    I am in California.

  • ianbradleyandrews says:

Obviously Steven does a fantastic job describing every aspect of the perfume here. Top to bottom. I love the creators process of not considering gender, like the raw materials. I love gender neutral perfumes. I’d like to win this and live in Indiana.

  • Matière Premiere Neroli Oranger is zesty and luminous , full of energy fragrance, also made by the talented Aurelien Guichard , I was gifted a mini , I believe it’s 8ml . Compared to Neroli Oranger, Encens Suave Extrait is way more complex, I like such incense and amber sophisticated fragrances with a lot of depth.
The premium incense, vanilla , resins and guest amber ingredient Aurelien Guichard said it adds a new facet to the incense from Somalia , I’m so interested. Everything from Aurelien Guichard introduction and creative process details, to Steven’s review and the scent profile sounds really magical, Encens Suave Extrait a fragrance Scheherazade would wear.
I read again the interview with Aurelien Guichard , and my quote is :
“Two things still strike me today as important takeaways from this period. First, the creative conviction and courage it took, for established brands and marketing directors to let a young trainee perfumer create his first perfumes alone, under no Master Perfumer’s guidance and supervision. This is rare.”

Exceptional work ethic by the rather young perfumer . Creating almost everything , from creation of the scent, to all that comes after, even harvesting some of Matiere Premiere ingredients on his own .
    Thanks the draw

  • “ I knew what I was stepping into when I decided to become a perfumer.” it’s hard to deny his families legacy. Being born in Grasse with such an artistic family, perfumerism naturally flowed in his veins and it shows he knows what he was stepping into with his works of art. I’m a huge fan of Matiere Premier and am excited so get my nose on all the extraits. Amber is one of my favorite notes and so I’m very hopeful for a euphoric surprise with Ensens Suave Extrait! As always thank you for the giveaway.

  • Brian Braverman says:

“Raw material”, powerful, amplified, and a sense of comfort. Michelyn understood this and acknowledged it in her piece. Aurelien confirmed this by reinforcing his process of making the line more powerful and completely unisex. He wanted the user to go on a journey with these fragrances and I can tell for this to be true. When Steve’s eyes rolled back when he took a sniff, I can see the sense of comfort and the journey had begun. A journey I would love to experience.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

I love the idea of adding a mystery ingredient to the original creation and since Aurelien Guichard says that this mystery ingredient is amber, I’m all in. I appreciate that Steven breaks down and describes the incense note. I never really know what to expect from an incense note. And the way he describes benzoin really makes me want to get my hands on the oil. This sounds like such an amazing fragrance. From the US.

  • liquidasset77 says:

“They were talented artists talking about their passion, exchanging and confronting ideas and experiences. I was lucky to grow up with them not only because they were successful and talented artists, but because they were open-minded and humble people, believing in diversity of talents and of visions of life.” It seems that adding adding an even richer amber accord, the soft glow of the gourmand drydown becomes a deeply soothing chord of caramelized creaminess, an almost sunset-like symphony of smooth warmth that envelops the wearer in a aura of comfort and strength. Steven always conveys the message of a fragrance withreat accuracy.

  • From Matiere Premiere i only have experience with Oud Seven , non linear fragrance , the whole metamorphosis animalic oud , to comforting resins , vetiver and tobacco is both aggressive, and appealing at the same time. I own a bottle. The best quote from the interview with Aurélien Guichard:

“I created a first version of Radical Rose and presented it to the press just before the first COVID lockdown. Only a week later, we were all confined, and I was lucky to stay during 6 months in my atelier in Grasse. I felt the fragrance was not good enough. I called my partners and told them I had to start all over again! I worked night and day during 6 months, including during the month of May, the month of the Rose Centifolia harvest, weighing and compounding every try myself. I came up with the final version at the end of the lockdown, it was on a Friday. On the following Monday, I called the press I saw 6 months earlier, to explain. They were kind and understanding – everyone was so happy to be free again!”

Aurélien Guichard approach to life is in a way similar to mine, he’s attracted by the diner things in life , food, styling, everything in Michelyn interview points out to one refined and elegant character.
I’m perfectionist like him , that’s why I was so impressed how he thought original line was already good, but with the Extrait line he could amp up the concentration and by adding amber but he was looking for something else , close to perfection incense fragrance, I’m a tailor, but just like Aurélien Guichard I believe I’m an artist too.
Encens Suave Extrait i like because of the different approach to incense and the Somalian incense fransformation , from a bit aggressive darker profile , to the appealing ambery , almost cozy base . Classy fragrance i’d pair with a Grey Three Piece Suit
Thank you Steven, Michelyn, Matiere Premiere, Aurélien Guichard

I have such a gravitation toward leather fragrances, and a loving nostalgia for the ouds and incense, I feel like I have this split personality – one side of me sporting a moto jacket and the other side of me in church vestments. Falcon Leather and Gucci Midnight Stroll helped carry me through the 2020 era, but I’ve been grasping for a more sophisticated High Church scent for sundays. Living in humid Oklahoma I have a love/hate with MFK Oud extrait, but when I read “A house which embodies that French Perfumery is all about extreme olfactive modernity and quality, far from the old-fashioned craft as some may see it.” I thought wow… I need to go back and revisit this house, for that Parisian spirit, with a contemporary flair. Very, very excited to smell this!

  • I really like how Aurelian Guichard explained for the Extraits upping the perfume concentration as well as dosage of main material and addition of another guest ingredient. And a more ambery Encens Suave definitely interests me. The other information Steven mentions about the vanilla and benzoin notes and it being smooth sounds great to me.
From Michelyn’s innerview, “I grew up in an artistic environment. At home painters, sculptors, couturiers, designers, architects, perfumers and many other kinds of artists…” I didn’t want to quote the whole paragraph but I enjoyed reading what he said about it. Thanks for the generous draw, from CT USA

  • I don’t own MATIERE PREMIERE Encens Suave, the original, but I sample it and it’s amazing.

Now, imaging the more darker and the addition of amber to it.

The bottle looks stunning, and is a declaration of intentions to where the fragrance will go and develop.

I would love to win this giveaway.

I am located in the USA.

  • I appreciate Aureilen Guichard’s approach to the Matiere Premiere line. A high concentration of a central main ingredient with guest ingredients to bring out additional facets of the focus note is elegant in its simplicity and impact. Steven’s description of an incense fragrance with a focus on amber sounds spot on.

From Michelyn’s interview with Aurelian Guichard. He strives to amplify the essence of select raw materials without overwhelming the senses. MD, USA

It is so easy for me to “imagine” a perfume after watching a video from Steven. I adore frankincense thinking about the potency this perfume has , my heart beats a little faster.

Amplified ambery tones and incense providing a sense of warm comfort. This extrait creation from Aurelien Guichard is speaking to the deepest part of my olfactive heart. The performance on this one seems to be an added bonus. Steven, as always, I have a deep appreciation for your in-depth reviews. Thank you 🙂

  • I greatly enjoyed Aurélien Guichard sharing his experience and ideas behind Matière Premiere new Extrait line , Steven YouTube video and reading once more Michelyn recent interview with the founder and perfumer of the brand.
What I’d like to say is I’m more than thrilled about Encens Suave Extrait, although two particular things, one by Steven and one by Aurélien Guichard himself puzzled me a bit. I haven’t smelled the new Extrait line, but original Encens Suave i had the pleasure of buying at Matière Premiere boutique in the Spring, and either me and Steven have quite a different perception of Encens Suave ( OG + Extrait) or more than just amber, and higher perfume concentration and dosage of Incense Oil Somalia are added to the Extrait.
Needless to say fragrances could smell and perfome in a variety of different ways to different people, still original Encens Suave other than incense fragrance is also high end resinous gourmand with vanilla, leather , and coffee . No doubt the incense is available through the whole time , but I think gourmand aspects are not subtle, but dominating. When the fragrance settles it’s sweet and ambery, with very nice roasted coffee in also present. I so wonder now if it’s more of a indeed different perceptions , since Aurélien Guichard in the introduction and Steven mentioned the two concentrations are similar… I also out of curiosity went to both Twisted Lily and Matière Premiere websites , and the coffee is listed as a note in the Extrait too , maybe Steven is not smelling it in the Extrait.
The other thing that puzzled me is when Aurélien Guichard said Amber is a guest ingredient in the Extrait, well the amber is available with high doses in the OG too .
Whatever the truth is as a big fan of Encens Suave i will find a way to try the Extrait.
From the previous interview , I was also impressed by how Aurelien Guichard thought Radical Rose was not good enough, and worked very hard to perfect the fragrance
“I created a first version of Radical Rose and presented it to the press just before the first COVID lockdown….. I felt the fragrance was not good enough. I called my partners and told them I had to start all over again! I worked night and day during 6 months, including during the month of May, the month of the Rose Centifolia harvest, weighing and compounding every try myself. Thank you for the opportunity

  • I really admire Aurelien Guichard for starting his own brand MATIERE PREMIERE and Steven says Encens Suave Extrait it is one of the best incenses to add to his list and was impressed by Steven’s knowledge of incenses and all the ingredients.
From Michelyn’s interview, “I did not want to create a brand per se, but a “Maison de Parfumeur” – a house led by a Perfumer, whose mission is to push the limits in terms of olfactive quality and know-how. A house which places fragrance quality at the very center of each single step and consideration. A house which embodies that French Perfumery is all about extreme olfactive modernity and quality, far from the old-fashioned craft as some may see.” USA

  • I cannot imagine wearing anything but black with this fragrance… black or nothing at all… that are only two options I see. It would be to honor the creator and the process, to let the fragrance shine. And now, when I think about that’s the only fair thing to do when wearing creations like this. Let’s do not disturb it. Let it project. I am willing to be a display if it comes to a masterpiece.
Rading through the creative process, I couldn’t help but wish the same could be done with so many more single ingredients… clean, simple, minimal.. just IT… highlighted.
Anyway, it’s good to know what the creator had in mind when working on the fragrance, it directs my interpretations of it. I like the video as well, especially when someone so well spoken introduces the fragrance. It paints the picture, gives an idea and often helps to make the decision.
Thank you for the opportunity and the chance, thank you.

    Joanna.

  • Getting cooler here soon in Georgia and im excited ! I am starting to slowly realize my nose is maturing and I’m gravitating more towards notes of incense and leather and this one sounds like it would be right up my alley. The way Steven advocates for this not coming off as screechy and harsh to the nose, but a well rounded beast of a Fragrance from this house grabs my attention. Thanks Michelyn for the brief education on this house ! And also the addition of Amber to the straight version. I’m sure it would make it so much more alluring.

  • PerfumesforLife says:

Steven surprised me saying this is one of the best incense fragrances on the market.Monsieur Aurelien’s creative process deserves an ovation. I tried the original and I am intrigued by tge extrait with the sillage enhancement. I like dark, incensy but sweet scents. Appreciate the giveaway opportunity. MA, USA

  • I appreciate Guichard’s comment that his fragrances “allow you to comprehend what you are wearing.” There’s something to be said for masterful blending, but a fragrance that’s so complex and integrated that you can’t pick out individual notes is a different wearing experience than one that revels in its primary materials. The MATIERE PREMIERE Extraits certainly do. I like the focus on a “higher dosage of the central main ingredient” and one primary “guest.” Steven pointed out that Encens Suave Extrait specifically highlights olibanum, plus “rich, sticky” benzoin with its medicinal vanilla amber tones. “Entrancing and enigmatic” is a strong recommendation. Strong longevity too.

Reading Michelyn’s interview with Aurelien Guichard, his story about starting a organic farm is memorable: “It all began when, in 2015, I decided to plant Rose Centifolia on our family domain in the Grasse region. My grand-parents were approaching the end of their life, they had quit farming a few years back. They had taught me so much in my childhood, I wanted to perpetuate this local and family know-how. Also, as a perfumer, I needed to do something more than just formulating. So I filed all the paperwork to acquire the official status of farmer, opened my own organic farm and became the only perfumer to grow his own raw materials.”

    I’m in the USA.

  • I do praise Aurélien Guichard desire to showcase traditional , natural raw ingredients of the highest quality , like incense from Somalia, labdanum from Andalucia, coffee from Venezuela, benzoin from Laos , Palo Santo from Ecuador and Madagascan Vanilla. As a small business owner myself, I own now two bakeries i can not only relate to Aurélien Guichard , all bright future is ahead of him , I’m sure.
I always respect others opinions and taste , food , fragrances, music, you name it. Since I’ve not only smelled , but actually own Encens Suave , I’ll have to confess video surprised me very much. If it’s just like Redolessence said , the Extrait is a subtle modification with better performance, and amplified darker aspects i wonder where all the sweetness and coffee went? I mean in my Pastry Chef mind Encens Suave drydown smells like I’m eating Tiramisù , drinking ristretto with burning incense cons next to me , whiteout a doubt a smoky gourmand. There are definitely unannounced notes in the first fragrance, saffron, patchouli, or rose maybe, and there’s a crunchy feeling too.
Encens Suave Extrait I’m fascinated by, I need to find out how much stronger and darker it is in comparison to the original fragrance? Also where are the gourmand aspects i enjoy greatly , basically the reason I bought Encens Suave. The Extrait is such a mystery…

“Your favorite restaurants in NYC, London and Paris?
    Aurélien Guichard:
In NYC: Felix in Soho- fun! In Paris, I love Brasserie Lipp, a Parisian classic.”

The quote we had to post, I love when Michelyn is asking such culinary related questions .
Appreciate Michelyn first interview with Aurélien Guichard , her reaching out again to him about the Extrait line, Steven review and the giveaway campaign

  • This is pure class and power in a bottle. Serious business, not for the faint hearted but those who want something with legs and brings a new level of richness and complexity. The resins stick to you like glue but the note breakdown is a mystery. A unique blend and a new creation that challenges norms and boundaries. From Jacksonville, NC.

  • I enjoy wearing smoky ambery fragrances almost all year round, except for the high heat of course , Encens Suave Extrait is perfect for the Fall , Winter and Spring.
The sense of comfort, higher concentration, , incense from Somalia and its ambery hues Aurelien Guichard spoke about are all aspects of the fragrance i do appreciate.
To be honest I don’t think I’ll be able to distinguish between all the different varieties of incense Steven was talking about , but I’m all for the overload of resins next to the beautiful incense in Encens Suave Extrait.
I do want my comment to count twice, so
“Do you have hobbies or passions outside of perfumery?
Aurélien Guichard: I play Field Hockey for Paris and the French National team. I also love kite Surfing and Surfing.
    ……
If you weren’t a perfumer, you would be…?
Aurélien Guichard: A professional field hockey player, or a painter!”
Wow , one my biggest childhood dream was to play in NHL , and I still surf , if the weather is nice.
Aurelien Guichard i know for Gucci Intense Oud. Unfortunately I’m not familiar with Matiere Premiere fragrances.
    Exciting giveaway, USA

  • Michael Prince says:

I loved Steven’s video review of Matiere Premiere Encens Suave Extrait. It still has that smooth suave lemony pine Olibanum/Frankincense, but the extrait really amplfies the resinous benzoin and Ambery components and boosts the performance compared to the original. Steven says it’s one of the best incense perfumes on the market and I can’t wait to try it. MATIERE PREMIERE creative process is they are just like their central raw material: they have no gender, they combine great power and diffusion with a sense of comfort, they allow you to comprehend what you are wearing, and smelling them will bring unique emotions. -A quote from Michelyn’s interview with Aurélien Guichard: I began studying perfumery at Givaudan Perfumery school at the age of 21, after completing University studies in the UK. The perfumery school was located in Paris. It lasted for 3 wonderful years. It required hard discipline, as you learn by heart all the ingredients and techniques, a little bit like studying at les Beaux Arts. I am from the USA.

  • The original Encens Suave and Santal Austral are two of my favorite fragrances. I want these soooo bad they are pricey though! Thank you Steven for your descriptive review. I always watch your videos and look forward to them. I love Matiere Premiere and would love to win this giveaway! Of course I miss the deadline:(
