Aldebaran is the latest release from Marc-Antoine Barrois, with Quentin Bisch adding another floral star to our scented night sky. Aldebaran joins Tilia, Quentin’s stunning, silky honeyed linden blossom, this time focusing on tuberose, a classic floral note in modern perfumery. Benchmarks like Fracas, Poison and Carnal Flower make it shine, but here in Aldebaran, composed as a soliflore it’s the star, one highlighting all its dark and light facets, making you shimmer, as you wear it. Aldebaran also takes its name from the brightest star discovered and observed by an 18th-century Arab astronomer. Its name, from the Arabic Al-Debaran, evokes the outstretched hand of someone who helps and shows the way. Marc-Antoine Barrois Aldebaran, like Tilia, has this elegant feel of florals shining in the night sky.

Aldebaran opens with a beam of fruity cool stem-like greens with a delicious tight snap, feeling young and fresh like a bell pepper with a hint of cool menthol giving its that forward vertical thrust. You can feel the white light of the tuberose, “queen of the night” in Aldebaran, shine and defuse from this stem of green as its heady creamy petals weave around you like the finest silk. Tuberose’s sweet milkiness slowly envelops the greenery. The sharper geranium floral freshness is still felt at the heart, its deep green tones make the white florals feel more sensual and elegant while the maté tea teases out some dirty flirty whispers of darker raw leather, leaning in to the peppers fleshy vegetative sensation. The maté tea creates a soft smokiness for the headier, sensual fleshy tuberose petals to sweep out on, it’s has this beautiful diffusive feel, flowing out from its heady heart like waves of petals on an endless sea.

The way Quentin Bisch composed Aldebaran really captures the feel of brightness, as if you were traveling from the deep, darkness of space before it blooms into a gorgeous tuberose soliflore. Before that softer side emerges, maté tea tease out more of the tuberose dark side. Aldebaran’s heady side has this intoxicating warmth to it; it hums with delicate balsamic spices glowing with a light pink paprika hue, flowing with a black tea cosiness, with a slightly dark birch like smokiness. Tonka bean begins to whisper in your ear here too; it’s dry ginger bready warmth is dialed back into a soft spice that merges into the maté tea warmth. All this dark magic is simmering underneath creamy moonlight of the tuberose. Its rich creamy textures are felt now, with tonka bean giving a delicious density to the petals, its biteable, making you want to savour it. A floral vanilla with gentle shavings of coconut melting into the flowers heart, its forms this beautiful welcoming embrace. Maté tea’s smokiness again softens the edges giving you that beautiful surreal sensation of being bathed in moonlight. Gentle honeyed florals grow richer with intoxicating balsamic spices as the more erotic side of tuberose is revealed in Aldebaran’s moonlight glow. A gentle velvet fuzz of dry honeyed pollen adds a soft texture to the smooth tuberose petals, a little rough with the smooth, a white light with a white heat.
That clever use of geranium keeps adding fresh sensations that bloom and highlight tuberose’s own sensual spices. As Aldebaran dries down, tuberose glows with a delicious intensity, its heady creamy pearls gleam like a star while its intoxicating aroma diffuses into a creamy soft focus with an ethereal feel, Aldebaran’s tuberose petals feel sensual and dense, yet there’s a soft airy transparency as its light shines out to fill all corners of space. Quentin Bisch’s take on tuberose, polishes Aldebaran like a gem and glimmers beautifully next to Tilia as stars in Marc-Antoine Barrois’ stunning perfume house. If you enjoy tuberose Aldebaran is one you must try!

To celebrate the launch of Aldebaran, Marc-Antoine Barrois and artist Antoine Bouillot have created an immersive installation, Mission Aldebaran ‘Tomorrow will light the way’ for Milan Design Week, April 7-13th. This experience takes you into a dark forest before revealing tuberose in all its magical splendour. From the few images I’ve seen online it looks stunning and wish I was there. For now, I’ll spray Aldebaran and dream of the magic starlight journey it takes me on.
Notes: Tuberose Absolute, Paprika Accord, Maté tea, Tonka Bean.
