Manos Gerakinis Pivoine Review + The Lovers Draw

Manos Gerakinis via Manos

If I had asked you some years back what you thought were the great perfume capitals of the world, you might have simply answered “Paris, London, New York,Milan…” In the ensuing time since those dark ages of 20+ years hence, the internet has transformed everything, giving us access to extraordinary perfumers from Moscow to Manilla and beyond. Currently Manos Gerakinis is creating quite the scented splash and seems destined to bring Greece firmly onto the olfactive world stage. Manos is no stranger to high-end goods; with ten years working for luxury retailer Harrods Of London, so a natural progression would be the creation of his own range. How lucky and blessed are we that he chose scent as his preferred medium of expression. Word of Manos Gerakinis’ creations first started being whispered about in late 2016 on Facebook forums and other social media; the comments were uniformly glowing, and it was clear the something special was happening in Athens.

Manos Gerakinis Pivoine review

Manos Gerakinis Pivoine

Taking a page from the book of classic french perfume and adding an eastern sensibility Manos has created perfumes that could be classified as “From Greece to west”; perfectly composed fragrances with just a touch of unrestrained Aegean wildness. Manos Gerakinis Pivoine created in 2017 is the perfect example of the thoughtfulness and deliberate consideration that Manos brings to all his work. Corners are not cut and shortcuts are not taken in his quest to create his memorable perfumes.

Manos Gerakinis Pivoine opens with a slight taste of apple, but not eaten out of hand, this apple is elegant and peeled by a favorite European uncle, panama-hatted, silver engraved penknife in hand, the peel a perfect spiral. This is an apple of anticipation awaiting a first tart bite. Peony is also present from the get-go. A beautiful pink-hued rosy blushed peony whose scent is narcotic, alluring, and soporific. The addition of rose and jasmine shore up the heady peony fragrance while the carnation adds a very welcome peppery piquancy. At the base is the suede, the wild note of the greek forests and animals, adding an almost Dionysian and earthy vibe, which sets Pivoine miles ahead of other non-gender specific florals. The sillage and longevity are the stuff of legends, a perfume befitting the Olympian gods and goddesses.

Manos Gerakinis Peony perfume and the Tarot card for the Lovers by Robert H

Interestingly, each of the Manos Gerakinis parfums are given a subtle and uplifting Tarot card connection on his website. I asked Manos about this and he explained that it is his gentle way of reminding people that positive things happen to people with positive attitudes. I couldn’t agree more. The card for Manos Gerakinis Pivoine is appropriately “The Lovers”.

I love the line about the sillage and longevity being the stuff of legends, befitting olympian gods and goddesses. I like that there aren’t shortcuts taken to make the fragrances. Isn’t that what all niche should be about? It’s fantastic that many good fragrances are not all coming out of France. I do try to shop the world over (including France) because I think the creators culture brings us more diverse choices. Being from Washington state, the apple has my interest!! USA. Thank you Manos and Robert.

  • Crisstyyn says:

It is the first greek perfume creator i heared about and i would be more than happy to try it on. Robert made a great review on this fragrance and what i liked the most was the link of each fragranve to a tarot card. Regards from EU.

  • Dubaiscents says:

Peonies are some of my favorite flowers but I have yet to find a peony scent that really calls to me since most tend to be so light and sweet. Pivoine sounds like it really amps things up and I love the fact that he adds earthiness and suede to the base. I would love to try this one. Thank you for the opportunity and I can’t wait for the line to be available in the US (where I am).

  • Love your descriptions, Robert. Having smelled these elegant, high quality fragrances, we are awaiting their U.S. arrival.

  • Shelly wolf says:

The description on the uncle with a Panama hat and a pen knife made this review fun before ever getting through the description!

  • Elizabeth T. says:

This line sounds amazing! I love the idea of suede and peony… the feel of a peony petal has a suede-like feel, so they naturally go together. I’m off to read more about the line. Thanks for sharing this with us, and for the generous draw! I’m in the USA.

  • Thank you for introducing us to another great perfumer. I absolutely adore the scent of peonies, I have a few different varieties in my garden. I would love to try this earthy peony fragrance. Thank you for the opportunity to sniff. USA

  • I love the smell of peonies but have found few perfumes that star them. I like the image of apple and peony together and how he connects his perfumes with tarot cards. Live in the USA.

  • A Greek, earthy intepretation of the peony must be magic. When hiking Olymp Mountain, I found all kind of wild aromatic herbs, thyme, oregano in the burning sun. This is one of my most treasured memories from Greece. I am happy to discover Manos Gerakinis creations, thank you for your the draw! I live in Romania.

  • I am delighted to know that his products were longstanding in Herod’s. The fragrance will be certain not to disappoint. Commenting from. Commenting from FL, USA

This is one of the most readable reviews i’ve ever seen. One that can make someone understand exactly how the fragrance is,if it’s worth trying or buying. I don’t read reviews, they usually lack information, and they praise the parfumeur no matter if he/she deserves it or not. They are subjective and i don’t dig that. Manos is one of the most talented createurs in this new wave, and i would be so so proud so be able to smell all his creations some day. Thank You Robert for a job well done.
    From Romania with love.

  • I like apple as a note a lot, just like in my scent of today König by Yosh <3

That picturesque description of peeling the apple is lovely, I'd love to experience that. Please let me win those 10ml to Germany. Thanks for the draw!

  • Love the smell of peonies in the morning. Interesting write up and looking forward to try these Greek fragrances. Live in the EU.

  • I am a long time Student of the Tarot, therefor this aspect of Gerakinis scents immediately fascinated me the most. Will look for all his ideas concerning this connection.

  • This truly sounds like a lovely perfume. The apple peel and “classic” flowers + carnation, which on my skin at least translates almost as a spice, sound wonderful. I also felt inspired by the reference to tarot cards, which I actually used to do readings of as a teenager. Also, the “olympic” sillage and longevity can only be a plus. thanks for the lovely review! From EU.

  • I don’t think I have ever read such a compelling description of peeling an apple. Truly elegant, delightful, and delicious with the first tart bite. I love peonies as well so I would love to try this one. I live in the USA. Thank you!

  • strangedim says:

Oh, the description of the opening apple note is so appealing, I need to try this first sniff with the picture of the favourite European uncle peeling the apple in my mind. The whole fragrance built on positive foundation seems so interesting. Never had the chance to try Manos Gerakinis’ creations. Best regards from Romania. EU!

  • It’s true I have read about Manos Gerakinis or heard about him but can’t find his fragrances around much. I didn’t know about the tarot card connection which is really interesting. I like that men can wear Peony. It’s not a flower I gravitate to. I would love to try it

  • redwheelbarrow says:

Great review! I’m still tripping over that apple peeled by a favorite European uncle. This sounds like a stunner. Thank you for the draw, in the US.

Thoroughly enjoyed this review. From the aristocratic uncle peeling the apple, to the soporific peony and the wild note of greek forests, this sounds like an exceptional creation. Would love to own the 10 ml sample, from EU.

  • Heard of Manos before but haven’t got the chance to try his fragrances. Don’t think I’ve smelled peony yet and the red apple note is interesting. Thanks for the draw, US

  • LORI LAWS says:

Excellent review by Robert! This fragrance sounds exquisite and I love how the various fragrances are linked with tarot cards. This was my favorite: “At the base is the suede, the wild note of the greek forests and animals, adding an almost Dionysian and earthy vibe, which sets Pivoine miles ahead of other non-gender specific florals. The sillage and longevity are the stuff of legends, a perfume befitting the Olympian gods and goddesses.” I look forward to trying this house of fragrance. Thanks for the giveaway and I live in the US!

I liked that it sounds like a gender neutral scent despite being predominantly floral. Especially given the earthy tone from the suede.

  • Excellent review by Robert of the offering Manos Gerakinis Pivoine. I like the Tarot card connection of the scents. Apple and Peony sounds very amazing just like the Tarot card “The Lovers” sound like a romance novel. I live in CA, USA. Thanks for the draw!

Robert, great review of Manos Gerakinis Pivoine. This sounds like the perfect apple, floral, spicy, and earthy suede fragrance. A great representation of Greece to get them on the map for fragrances. I am from the USA.

I love the idea of non-gender-specific florals, and the idea of connecting a fragrance to a tarot card, as I believe tarot cards are great ways to unlock subconscious associations and thoughts, I live in the US, in North Carolina.
