Mancera Sand Aoud Review + Desert Romance Draw

Mancera Sand Aoud review

So far, 2019 is smelling like the year of the buoyant, fresh floral. My recent favorites from Esxence 2019 include a host of breathtaking, evanescent beauties.  But even while floating on (and carried away with) the current ethereal trend, I find that I occasionally crave a perfume that is a little more corporeal, focused and almost down to earth.

Mancera Sand Aoud was created in 2011 by Pierre Montale for Mancera Paris, the house that he founded in 2008 and that is now under the artistic direction of his daughter Amélie.  Sand Aoud features some of my favorite fragrance notes, unapologetically distinct and literal, each presented in vivid contrast and sharp relief with only an occasional slightly blurred edge or fuzzy aura.

Mancera Paris Sand Aoud review

Illustration by Maxfield Parrish from “The Arabian Nights”, 1909.

I was initially drawn to Mancera Sand Aoud by the name alone, fully expecting a desert romance, complete with djinns, dry desiccated air, incense curling from magical censors and a surfeit of mysterious oudi-ness. I was surprised, but not disappointed, to discover Sand Aoud to be a totally different take on the desert landscape.  Earthy, intense and animalic, Mancera Sand Aoud retains all of the romance and magic that I expected, but the dry, dusty air and the oud are almost lost to an addictive atmosphere of comforting warmth and sweetness.

 Mancera Sand Aoud Review 2011

Mancera Sand Aoud Bottle with Black Currants and Sand, photo by Gail Gross ©

The magic that is Mancera Sand Aoud immediately satisfies one of my primal olfactory cravings – an obsessive desire for the scent of black currant. The djinn residing in the sleek Mancera perfume bottle grants my wish and satisfies my passion with a palpable, intense opening of deep and darkly sweet black currant liqueur, spiced with nutmeg, cardamom and black pepper. In about fifteen minutes the hot, boozy, ever so slightly medicinal fruit begins to radiate a subtle aura of woody incense that resolves into a heart of dried rose petals and saffron powder, reminiscent of the aroma and taste of a Persian Advieh or a Moroccan Ras el Hanout spice blend.

Mancera Sand Aoud is an exceptionally long-lived fragrance.  The romantic olfactory tale that is Sand Aoud, while not lasting for 1001 nights, remains on my skin for at least 24 hours and for countless days on clothing. Mancera Sand Aoud finishes with a long and satisfying experience of patchouli, dark vanilla and just a hint of the classic oud that Pierre Montale and Mancera Paris do so well.

Notes: Hot spices, black currant liqueur, rose petals, saffron powder, incense, patchouli, oud and vanilla.

Disclaimer:  I would like to thank Europerfumes and Mancera for my treasured bottle of Sand Aoud.  My opinions are my own.

  • Mancera is a house i really like , Aoud Lemon Mint is the fragrance i’m wearing right now.
Fruity , spicy , woody , and on top of all a bit boozy – count me in.
“Sand Aoud, while not lasting for 1001 nights, remains on my skin for at least 24 hours and for countless days on clothing”
    Good to know .
Happy owner of 120ml Choco Violet – a birthday gift form my brother. From the four Mancera bottles i own right now Choco Violet is my favorite.
    Thanks for the draw

  • I’ve had the chance to smell this fragrance from a sample and i liked it a lot, it’s a really nice blend of patchouli, vanilla and some oud. Also, like Gail’s said in the review the performance is stellar, i got easily 12-14 hours. My favourite from Mancera is still Cedrat Boise (actually my first contact with this house). Thanks for the chance.

  • I love warm and spicy fragrances. And the fact that it lasts 24 hours on skin, I love the thought of being engulfed in it for a whole day when I were to put it on. (Commenting from FL, USA).

  • Uncle1979 says:

Deep and dark black currant liqueur , spiced with nutmeg, cardamom and black pepper.
Gail you got me with this line. A few people even know such thing as black currant liqueur even exists .
This description immediately reminded me of black currant mousse cake with whole fruits , and drizzled with black currant liqueur. It’s fantastic, but I’m making it only on special occasions, because it’s a bit expensive to make. Again can’t help it – Pastry Chef is coming forward .
Favorite Mancera is Aoud Black Candy .
    Appreciate the giveaway campaign

Gail’s description of this fragrance made me think of the old Prince of Persia video games. Anyone remember those underrated classics? Fittingly, the first one in the series was called Sands of Time. Thanks for the draw, cheers from IN, USA.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

Oh this sounds magical. I love the way Mancera does oud and rose. It’s hard to pick a favorite but I love aoud lemon mint, gold aoud, holidays, and sicily to name a few. This sounds interesting with the addition of black current. I can’t wait to try this one. Thank you for the draw. I am in the US.

  • I like oud especially with fruit. My favorite Mancera is black Gold
I really like the magic genie pictures and Gail did a great job

  • Oh, my! Great write up. Love the use of “djinn” residing in the bottle.
Black Currant and woody incense? Sign me up! My favorite Mancera is Cedrat Boise. This one sounds like a more interesting dinner companion. Thanks to Europerfumes and CaFleureBon for the opportunity to win a tester bottle. Monterey USA.

  • I enjoyed the flowing prose and descriptive nature of Gail’s review. This fragrance sounds enchanting. Cedrat Boise is my current favorite from Mancera. Cheers, from Oregon!

  • I really enjoyed reading this review as Gail captures the allure and beauty of this fragrance quite succinctly. Mancera happens to be one of my favorite houses as well, with Black to Black and Hindu Kush being some of my favorites. I also absolutely love Red Tobacco as well. Thanks so much for this review and generous giveaway! I’m in Oregon, US.

  • Nice review. Makes it sound very enticing, indeed! My favorite Mancera is split between Roses Vanille and Pearl. Great house!

  • Alfredo D. Teutla says:

The fragrance sounds incredible. I would love to experience the opening: “a palpable, intense opening of deep and darkly sweet black currant liqueur, spiced with nutmeg, cardamom and black pepper.” Thank you for the review.

  • Thank you Gail for the review and the kind giveaway. I like ouds and your description of this fragrance and would love to try this out. I’ve not yet had an opportunity to sample Mancera fragrances though Cedrat Boise is in my cross-hairs. I’m in TX USA

  • i’ve only very recently found the time to go back to reading cafleurebon on a regular basis (and commenting on the reviews.) it is amazing how many houses i’ve never tried — mancera being one of them. this sand oud sounds right up my alley, black currants and all (and for another perfume with a fantastic currant note i recommend olympic orchid’s electra, previously called midsummer day’s dream.) would love to give sand oud a try.

  • Beautifully described! I’ve not experienced any fragrance from Mancera, This would be quite the treat. USA.

  • I’ve tried Lemon Line before, but never Sand Aoud. It sounds interesting. I’m always looking for perfumes that have different takes on the saffron, rose, oud. Most are really similar. I’m in the USA.

  • NiceVULady says:

First let me say that I love the Maxfield Parrish illustrations. This sounds like something I would really like. I too get tired of the ethereal fragrances and then I turn to those which have more heft. I LOVE the notes and can’t wait to try it. I like the idea of the different take on the desert. Loved the review. Thank you for the generous draw. I’m in the USA

  • Well….hot spices!!! Say no more. I own a few from Mancera and would love to try Sand Aoud, if lucky. Thanks for another fabulous draw! USA

  • I enjoyed reading about this earthy, full-bodied, smoky, and animalic perfume. An animalic with no animal notes! Quite fascinating. I have never tried fragrances from Mancera but would definitely love to. I live in the USA.

  • smellslikehappiness says:

Sand Aoud sounds really interesting, earthy, dry and deep. I’d love to try this, thank you for the draw. Live in the US.

  • I like Mancera brand. I have a sample of Rose Aoud and think it is beautiful. Gail seems to really like this one and I would love to try. Patchouli and Black current sound divine. Count me in. USA Thank you and I really enjoyed reading about the olfactive romantic journey.

  • fazalcheema says:

Gail says sand aoud is a different take on the desert landscape, with fruity elements such as blackcurrant and also has exceptional longevity, like many other Manceras. My fav. from Mancera is Cedrat boise. I am in US

  • Dubaiscents says:

Like Gail, I think the black currant will be the key to this scent. I can imagine how this must smell like the fruity sweet hookah, one of my favorite smells. Thank you for the gorgeous review. I like many of the Mancera scents although I haven’t found a favorite. This might be the one. I’m in the US.

  • I love black current, or cassis, ice cream which I sadly cannot get here, but fell in love with as I studied for a semester in college in France, and visited friends in Zurich (we ate a lot ice cream!) I have not tried anything from this house, but would love to try this, looking forward to the syrupy, spicy black current in it, it sounds yummy (I also love cardamom, which is also good in ice cream)… It’s finally summer, and I’m noticing a theme! Thank you for the review and the draw… In the pacific northwest (us).

  • I have a sample of this somewhere. I need to try and relocate it, to give it another go. I do enjoy Lemon Line from this house. One of the best lemon scents I’ve sampled so far. Thank you for the draw. US.

  • IvanVelikov says:

Boozy and sweet black currant, spicy trio with nutmeg, pepper and cardamom ? WOW what a start. Dried rose petals and saffron in the base … Hmmm I like how Sand Aoud is not some linear fragrance, but changes a lot. Good longevity is expected, it’s Mancera fragrance we’re talking about after all.
My favorite Mancera? Aoud Cafe and Cedrat Boise I love equally. Happy to own both.
Thanks for the review and the great draw

  • I enjoyed the descriptive paragraph under the photo of the Sand Aoud photo. From the Mancera house I quite like the Hindu Kush. US

  • Spicy fruity slightly boozy black currant concoction. I need this beauty in my life.
My favorite Mancera is Black Vanilla, closely followed by Cedrat Boise. If you’re into fragrances, you know Cedrat Boise well, smelled it, or at very least heard the name, but I don’t get why Black Vanilla doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. Smells so good.
One of the reasons I said I need Sand Aoud in my life, is the fact it shares black currant with my favorite Mancera Black Vanilla.
Thank you all for the draw
    USA

  • I like intense and animalic. That sounds good to me. I don’ t have a fave Mancera. Years ago I sampled Aoud Violet
    Choco Violet
    Black to Black
    Sand Aoud
Aoud Cafe. Sand Oud really is my fave of those: true oud, slightly sour, sweet and dry; powdery with some patch and hint of vanilla

  • Beautiful review by Gail. I have smelled Hindu Kush which is amazing. Sand Aoud sounds intriguing, fruity, woody, boozy and spicy…Wowzers! I live in CA, USA.

  • I like the fact that it lasts 24 hours on the skin countless days on clothing. Earthy, intense and animalic is an awesome way to describe this particular fragrance.
    I don’t have a favorite Mancera fragrance.
    I live in California.

  • Spicy , woody , fruity I like a lot. Throw some vanilla and patchouli into the mix, and we have a winner in Sand Aoud.
Mancera do have a lot of fragrances, and I’m a bit new to the house despite the fact I own 3 120ml bottles- Aoud Black Candy + Roses and Chocolate + Sicily, and 2 decants – 20ml of Aoud Orchid and 20ml of Pearl.I’ll get a full bottle once my decant is gone. My favorite one.
    Beautiful draw thank you.

This review was wonderful – totally evocative writing! I loved your dazzling description of the fragrance. Now I definitely want to win this! I have several Mancera fragrances that I enjoy – Cedrat Boise, Hindu Kush, Red Tobacco, Black to Black, Black Line, and Aoud Cafe, though I’d say Red Tobacco and Hindu Kush take the cake. This one, however, sounds marvelous. Alabama, USA.

  • bigscoundrel says:

I’m a big fan of black currant like Gail. Right now, my top Mancera fragrances are Aoud Lemon Mint and Hindu Kush. I’m in the US.

  • This was a delightful read this morning, as I’m sitting here sipping Gahwa I’m enthralled by Gail’s review. So as these notes are also some of my front-runners as well this statement drew me in. “Unapologetically distinct and literal, each presented in vivid contrast and sharp relief with only an occasional slightly blurred edge or fuzzy aura.” I am in the US

  • WaltherP99 says:

Thank you Europerfumes and Cafleurebon for this draw , and of course Gail for the review .

  • Michael Prince says:

Gail, great review of Mancera Sand Aoud. It sounds like another powerhouse Mancera fragrance with Middle Eastern touches due to the spices and the rose/oud combo. My favorite Mancera fragrance is Cedrat Boise. I am from the USA.

  • wildevoodoo says:

Haha, I love “while not lasting for 1001 nights” disclaimer. Very clever. I’m glad to see this review because I honestly would’ve assumed the same thing from the name Sand Aoud as Gail did- dry, spicy, smoky, and void of sweetness. However, this description sounds much more interesting and unique! Is crème de cassis the blackcurrant liqueur scent used, or is there another similar liqueur used? I’m also glad to hear that nutmeg, cardamom, and black pepper are the ‘warm spices’ mentioned, as these are some of my very favorites. I do not have any Mancera fragrances so I cannot pick a favorite, but I have been trying to get my hands on Red Tobacco and Cedrat Boise for some time! I am in the US 🙂

  • Mancera seems like a House that has many good scents. I’ve smelled a couple so far and own Cedrat Boise. Boise is a love for me. Would like to get a chance to try Sand Oud. Sounds like a nice juicy Spicey scent. Thanks for the draw, California

  • “Fuzzy aura” ” warm and comforting” and just look at those notes! Beautiful, I would be very suprised if I did not love this one.

Thank you for the chance cafleurbon, I am in the US and dieing to try this beauty now 🙂

  • gregorysop says:

Although I have heard of Mancera, I have yet to sample any of their stuff. I am taking my daughter to Disneyworld in a few months and the title reminds me of Aladin. Thanks for the draw.

  • OMG, this sounds gorgeous! And you say it lasts on your skin for over 24 hours??!! That is awesome! Those bottom notes are exactly what I look for in a fragrance – patchouli, oud, vanilla, incense – this truly sounds incredible!!!
    I live in the US.

  • doveskylark says:

I adore fragrances that live long on clothes (and bed sheets). I’m intrigued by the black currant with the nutmeg and cardamom. I also love fragrances with a medicinal edge.
I haven’t tried anything from Mancera.
    I live in the USA.

  • I would like to thank everyone for your comments, compliments and for entering the draw! I would also like to once again thank Europerfumes, the US distributor for Mancera, for providing this very generous draw.

  • Great review by Gail and I love that this has great longevity! I love oud and the fact that this one has that black currant liqueur note is everything. My favorite part was: “The djinn residing in the sleek Mancera perfume bottle grants my wish and satisfies my passion with a palpable, intense opening of deep and darkly sweet black currant liqueur, spiced with nutmeg, cardamom and black pepper. In about fifteen minutes the hot, boozy, ever so slightly medicinal fruit begins to radiate a subtle aura of woody incense that resolves into a heart of dried rose petals and saffron powder, reminiscent of the aroma and taste of a Persian Advieh or a Moroccan Ras el Hanout spice blend.” This sold me. My favorites from this house are: Amber and Roses, Aoud Exclusif, and Black Vanilla. Thanks for the generous giveaway and I live in the US!

  • Thanka for the giveaway and great review as usual. My favorite Manceta is Cedrat Boise. I liked that the fragrance surprised you and had a more fruity tone with the black current, saffron, and rose. It sounds like a different desert scent that i would love to try. In the USA.

  • family. Really feel like Gail painted a picture with words so descriptive about the fragrance. The black current especially dree me in. In the U.S. Thanks
