What Symmetry! What art!  They are the tears of mermaids!” – from the 1936 film Desire, starring Gary Cooper and Marlene Dietrich.

Pearls have been treasured, coveted and collected by mankind for millennia. From stories of the ancient pearl beds of the Caribbean and the Arabian Seas, to the tales of the South Pacific and Japanese cultured pearl fisheries and the freshwater pearl farms, ponds and lakes of China, the myths and legends, the intrigue and obsession associated with pearls could easily fill several volumes.   I have been collecting pearls since I was a teenager but, unlike the majority of collectors, I have never been obsessed with perfectly round, gem quality pearls.  While beautifully imperfect near round pearls make up the vast majority of my trove, my favorites are still baroque pearls, thick with lustrous nacre, pearls that fascinate me with endless plays of color and oddly intriguing forms. Tahitians, South Sea pearls, Akoyas and Keshis, as well as freshwater coins pearls, Kasumis and Biwas, can all be found in myriad textures, hues and in cultured as well as natural baroque shapes.

The beauty of Baroque pearls demonstrates to me, time and again that, counter to the opinion of the jeweler Aristide Duvall in the 1936 movie Desire, symmetry is not necessarily a prerequisite for beauty or for art. Perfumes, like fine art, are often the most beautiful when they manifest in baroque and asymmetrical ways.  Mancera Pearl, created in 2016 by Pierre Montale for the House of Mancera Paris, now under the artistic direction of his daughter Amélie is one such fragrance.

Like the nacreous skin of a fine baroque pearl, Mancera Pearl is imbued, from the first breath to the last lingering sigh, with an olfactory glow and shimmering iridescence. Even though the profile or landscape of Mancera Pearl changes radically and morphs over time – from the ornate and textured to the smooth and lustrous – the iridescent effect is always there. Beginning with a sharp, very green fig, cut with citrus and apple peel, Mancera Pearl glistens with hints of moisture as it gradually blooms into a smooth pearlescent bouquet of rose buds, stems, rose leaves and cool spring flowers. After about an hour this pearl of a perfume begins to glow as notes of jasmine, peach and amber (and perhaps a bit of orange blossom) add warmth to the cut flowers. The mellow floral heart remains in place, clean and ever so slightly soapy, for eight more hours on skin, and much longer on clothing. Mancera Pearl dries down to a juicy combination of peachy amber, oakmoss and musk and is a fragrance that can be worn during every season, a perfume that is “always appropriate” (to paraphrase Jackie Kennedy) for any occasion.

Notes:  Bergamot, fig, green apple, white peach, Bulgarian rose, Egyptian jasmine, violet, amber and white musk.

Disclaimer:  I would like to thank Europerfumes for my treasured bottle of Mancera Pearl.  My opinions are my own.

Gail Gross review is wonderful. Love the fact that is full of information and great details about this fantastic fragrance. I love the description of the notes and it really intrigue me the opening notes with fig, citrus and apple peels. I think Mancera Pearl is quite unique for that; those three notes together are the epiphany of spring to me. I currently owned a few Manceras, my favorite is Mancera Roses Vanille.
Thank you for the opportunity to enter the draw. I’m commenting from Orlando, Fl.

I like that Gail is fond of baroque pearls. There is always beauty in imperfections, and I can see why this fragrance was named pearl. The notes seem to fit the image of a baroque pearl and the green notes really intrigue me. Mancera is a great house, and my current favorite is ace Cedrat Boise. I know it’s kind of basic, but I can’t deny that the fragrance is amazing. Kind regards from Illinois, USA.

  • Pearls! Adore them! Pearl earrings were always my favorite. The green apple, white peach and violet notes sound perfect for spring. I’m a fan of Mancera, Red Tobacco being my favorite. Thanks for another fabulous draw! Mich USA

I was given an antique strand of pearls several years ago and I love to wear it. Each pearl in the strand has its own idiosyncrasies and the combination gives the entire necklace its own personality. Mancera Pearl sounds luminescent with the delicate fruits and heady florals on a bed of white musk. I like a lot of Mancera scents, my favorite being Amber and Roses. I’m in MD, USA.

  • Armando Esparza says:

When she mentions it glows and adds warmth while in the end, drying down to a combination of juicy amber, oakmoss, and misk. Yumm!
Of the line, my favorite would be Cedrat Boise and Precious Oud!

  • Gail’s review brings Mancera Pearl to life in all its glowing, iridescent beauty. She had me at green fig, one of my favorite notes in perfumery. My favorite scent must be Coco Vanille. Thanks for the opportunity to be entered in the draw.

  • I really enjoyed how Gail described Pearl as ornate and textured to smooth and lustrous but always iridescent. Also that it’s good for all seasons and occasions. As of now my favorite Mancera fragrance is Instant Crush. I live in CT USA. Thanks for the generous draw.

  • I surely enjoyed Gail’s review of Mancera’s Pearl…the scent sounds fresh and summery and the photography was enjoyable, as well! My favorite Mancera perfume is Musk of Flowers. I am in the US.

  • Bryant Worley says:

What I liked about Gail’s review, firstly, was that she (in my opinion) mentioned that this fragrance would be a departure from the ordinary (“‘The beauty of Baroque pearls demonstrates to me, time and again that……symmetry is not necessarily a prerequisite for beauty or for art.'” And then there’s this: “Like the nacreous skin of a fine baroque pearl, Mancera Pearl is imbued, from the first breath to the last lingering sigh, with an olfactory glow and shimmering iridescence.

I’ve tried only 8-9 Mancera fragrances, and if I had to choose a ‘favorite’, it would have to be Cedrat Boise by a nose. I reside in Waldorf, MD, USA.

  • Thank you Gail, for this great review and thank you to Europerfumes/Europrestige for the generosity of the draw – you rock!

Gail, I never knew that you collected pearls! You never cease to fascinate me, you have a genuine love of the imperfect, which then becomDzongkhases perfect, beauty. You bring a very palpable feeling of the depths of this scent out, I can feel the moisture and smell the roses as they are cut.

Cedrat Boise is currently my favorite Mancera, though it is always so hard to chose a favorite.

    I’m in MA, USA.

  • Marie Bonita says:

A beautiful, opulent review! Funny – when I was younger I always imagined baroque pearls to be mermaid teeth.
I love, love the sound of the notes in this one. The only Mancera I’ve sampled is choco violet – the violet and musk combination appealing to me greatly.

  • Pearls are my favorite jewelry items so I was delighted to read about a perfume that’s inspired by them and also carries their name. I enjoyed reading the description of the notes and would be very curious to try this. I am in the USA.

  • I own Chocolat Greedy and Cedrat Boise. I am intrigued by this one inspired by pearls. It sounds perfect for my wife and Gail’s collection is awesome

  • My favorite part of the review was the pictures of the pearls! But seriously I love the description of how scents can evoke the image of something else entirely. Lovely review. I have yet to try any Mancera scents. California, USA

  • Disneydad says:

While I liked the fragrance review, what really intrigued me about Gail’s article was her mention of her pearl collection. It just struck me as a very interesting and fun thing to collect. But I also enjoyed reading the description of the fragrance and it sounded lovely.
I would really enjoy trying it and smelling it on my wife as well. Mancera Red Tobacco is my favorite from the house. I’m in IL, USA.

  • astro_girl says:

I do not have a favorite Mancera perfume, but adore anything with fig, as well as apple and rose. Pearls are a perennial favorite of mine, and I wear them almost every day in some form. I appreciated the imagery of glow and iridescence to describe the scent.

  • NiceVULady says:

I too have collected pearls and recognize that symmetry is not always what is the most interesting or beautiful. I don’t have a favorite Mancera fragrance, but I would really like to try this one. I do so hope I can. A most enjoyable review and a most generous draw. Thank you for both. I’m in the USA

  • Like the name, Mancera Pearls does seem quite a feminine fragrance with notes like peach and fig. My fav. from Mancera is Cedrat Boise. USA

  • I wholeheartedly concur with Gail on the beauty of baroque pearls. They are wondrous and magical. Lately my friends describe my style as “dark mermaid” so this would be perfect for me. I have never tried a Mancere fragrance, but would love to.

  • abbie road says:

this sounds lovely. the sound of a fruity floral with a soapy dry down has my attention. one of my favorite manceras are Sicily. thank you. USA

  • doveskylark says:

I always love to read how perfumers attempt to replicate a precious material through fragrance. The roll-out of the fig, apple, peach and white flowers and musk make perfect sense to illustrate the iridescence of a pearl. I love that Gail collects pearls–what a splendid thing to collect.
I haven’t tried anything from Mancera.
    I live in the USA.

  • I loved Gail’s descriptions of her collection of Pearls. I never realized there were so many kinds. They are so beautiful. I also enjoyed the relation to the old movie, Desire and pearls. Mancera sounds beautiful. My favorite Mancera fragrance is Roses Vanille. USA

  • I love love love Mancera fragrances I recently just started getting into them! I really like lemon mint aoud and cedrat Boise but plenty more on my list that I want. Based on the review this fragrance sounds right up my alley. Love the freshness of it and I’ve been really attracted to fig notes recently. Great draw. I’m in Michigan, USA.

  • Love the balance of fruit and deeper amber described and of course the movie reference, it’s always helpful to imagine a place a fragrance can take you to. I’ve not yet tried any Mancera but it keeps popping up on my radar. Defoe rly looking to find a place to sample them once the current danger subsides. NJ, USA

  • I have always found Mancera fragrances to be easy to like, and this one seems not different. I like the idea of lush pearls and opulence translated into a fragrance. USA.

  • I was thinking that having a scent based on pearls would have a salty scent, but I’m impressed by this interpretation of it! The shimmery essence of it sounds well captured by this fragrance. I haven’t tried anything by Mancera yet so I don’t have a favorite, but I’ve heard of the brand before. I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • I thoroughly enjoyed Gail’s comparison of asymmetry in pearls to that in Mancera Pearl fragrance. Aren’t natural, asymmetrical pearls more valued, more expensive than symmetrical, synthetic ones? From the description, it seems Pearl lasts a long time and with notes of Bergamot, fig, green apple, white peach, Bulgarian rose, Egyptian jasmine, violet, amber and white musk, it seems to be a heady fragrance. I have tried Mancera Aoud Exclusif (based on a video review by Sebastian Zara) and I love it. Mancera and Montale don’t shy away from deep, strong, heady fragrances and I’m sure this will be similar. Thanks for the draw and the review. Writing from USA.

  • I am smitten! This was a lovely review and a beautiful topic in pearls and perfume. “The perfume begins to glow as notes of jasmine, peach and amber (and perhaps a bit of orange blossom) add warmth to the cut flowers…”
This sounds so lucious. US subscriber

  • Sounds nice. Goes good with Spring and Summer. Haven’t smelled this yet. So far my favorite Mancera is Cedrat Boisé. Thanks for the giveaway, Ca

  • Fabulous description by Gail of pearls, which intrigues me as an artistic concept for a perfume. I also liked that this sounds like a versatile fragrance that can be worn for all occasions and seasons. Have not found a favorite Mancera fragrance yet. Regards from the

  • wallygator88 says:

Thank you for the lovely review Gail. I’ve generally found the Mancera fragrances that I’ve owned to be fairly linear. This is an interesting aside from that.

I’ve used Mancera Cedrat Boise, Mancera Hindu Kush, Mancera Lemon Line.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • I love that I learned a new word— nacreous. The whole review was incredibly descriptive and stimulating in the way that it conjures up the look of pearls and the smell of the perfume, linking them effectively and making me really want to try Mancera Pearl. The notes alone (Bergamot? And fig? Also peach?! As well as floral notes like jasmine and oriental notes like amber!) sound up my alley but the review really made this perfume sound unique and precious—like every real pearl.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

I just recently sampled this one and it was a wonderful learning experience to read your description with this fragrance still on my mind. I also prefer the more imperfect pearls. Thank you for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • I do not have a favorite Mancera, but like Gail I too like pearls, Baroque, keshi, etc. I even have some conch and scallop pearls. I do not know if it was my grandmother’s influence, John Steinbeck’s The Pearl, or images of Maharajas’ pearl adorn clothing in my encyclopedias but I have always loved pearls. From Gail’s description Mancera Pearl is an anytime kind of fragrance I feel the same about a pearl necklace. Pearls can class up any outfit or lack their of, if anyone remembers Kim K’s Paper’s Winter 2014 cover. Here in California

Gail, great review of Mancera pearl. I enjoyed the backstory on mermaids and pearls. This sounds like a beautiful sweet and floral fragrance on a bed of musk. I would love the opportunity to try this fragrance. My favorite Mancera fragrance is Cedrat Boise. I am from the USA.

I loved seeing Gail’s pearls. I have a brooch that a bunch of military guys who were in the hospital in Japan put money together and bought for my Grandmother when she was over there when her son was injured during the Vietnam war. She wrote letters for guys who lost their arms, sort of a scribe for them. Now I am curious what kind of pearl they are. Other than the brooch, I wear “Navajo Pearls”. The notes in this fragrance sound really nice, I can imagine it as soft and ethereal like pearls. I’ve only smelled one from this line and that was Roses Greedy. Thanks for the tip on Beverly Hills Perfumery. I’m heading to their site next!! Thanks for the chance. USA.

Wow, I enjoyed everything about the review, from the references to types of pearls, which I am completely unfamiliar with…to the sensuality of the description of the perfume. What a lovely drawing. This perfume sounds right up my alley!

Personality I’m fascineted with pearls too, just like Gail saying about her passion for pearls. • What a gorgeous fragrance describe by Gails in her review. To be so beautifully crafted and “always appropriate” for any occasion is amazing. Thanks for the awesome draw. I am in CA, USA.

Thank you Europerfumes and Cafleurebon for this draw , and of course Gail for her review .
I know Pearl , and I mostly agree with Gail. Happy fragrance with lots of fruits on top of floral basket. I think it’s more suitable for warmer weather, and if you scared of jasmine like me , don’t be! Jasmine is playing it’s role in the background, but it’s not a dominant note.
I absolutely love Mancera – own 10 big bottles , and i want a lot more.Favorite Mancera fragrance….a hard one-depends of my mood.Right now i would say Wild Cherry .
Already do follow all of you on IG -Cafleurebon , Gail , Europarfums and Mancera.

I’m a fan of potent fragrances , with strong projection , and sillage . From Pearl I expect not only super pleasing scent , but also great performance .
Juicy combination of peachy amber, oakmoss and musk , I admit i’m intrigued. The smell changes a lot , and to me that’s always a plus. My favorite Mancera is Aoud Cafe.
Thanks for the review and the draw

Mancera Pearl sounds like an elegant fragrance and I like that it can be worn during every season! I also enjoyed reading about Gail’s love of pearls and collecting them. My favorite line is: “Like the nacreous skin of a fine baroque pearl, Mancera Pearl is imbued, from the first breath to the last lingering sigh, with an olfactory glow and shimmering iridescence.” The fig, green apple, white peach, and white musk have completely sold me. Thanks for the giveaway and I live in the US!

  • I need this beauty in my life. Uplifting multipurpose kind of fragrance , that’s how I feel about Pearl , after reading Gail Gross review.
My favorite Mancera is Black Vanilla, closely followed by Cedrat Boise. If you’re into fragrances, you know Cedrat Boise well, smelled it, or at very least heard the name, but I don’t get why Black Vanilla doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. Smells so good , but almost no one takes about it .
    Thanks. USA … at home

  • Fruity-floral I like a lot for the spring. Throw some amber into the mix, and we have a winner in Pearl .
Mancera do have a lot of fragrances, and I’m a bit new to the house despite the fact I own 4 – Aoud Black Candy + Roses and Chocolate + Sicily + Blue Notes .
My favorite one is not in my possession Red Tobacco .
Special thanks to Europerfumes for keeping the fire going, in the hard times we’re living in.

  • I love pearls so much and reading Gail’s review makes me want to try this fragrance. I love fragrances that last a long time on the skin or clothes. Gail’s review is really flowing and full of information. I have never tied this before so I don’t have a favorite.
    I live in USA.

  • IvanVelikov says:

Nice new gem by Mancera. I mean it’s new to me, because I haven’t tried it.
Semi sweet fragrance, semi floral . I appreciate it’s not juvenile ultra sugary bomb. Mancera fragrances are really potent, and I don’t need to bath myself if I want to project.
Also I don’t wear fragrance for compliments, but when I put Cedrat Boise or Aoud Cafe going out , I know I’ll most likely get some.
Cedrat Boise is my favorite one.
    Thank you for the opportunity

I have sampled Pearl , and I find it wrongly marketed for women only. I know guys wearing it, and it smells awesome on men’s skin.
If you like fig , and you don’t like how most fig fragrances do not perform, Pearl could be the one to try . Don’t know about peach, but fig is the the one thing I’m thinking, when I think about Pearl.
Mancera i”m a fan of , Wild Fruits i’m wearing right now.Choco Violet , birthday gift form my brother is my favorite.
    Cheers from VA

Eating Fig and Peach ricotta cake in some botanical garden, that’s what impression left Gail review.
Again can’t help it – Pastry Chef is coming forward .Favorite Mancera without a doubt is Aoud Black Candy . Love the lakritz candies accord in it. Worldwide most use “lakritz” , but in States it’s known as licorice .
Appreciate Gail review, and the giveaway campaign
