A new calendar is a blank slate. It marks a fresh start, a chance to be wiser and wittier and more punctual and better dressed and, well, everything you wish you were last year. Or at least that’s what we faux-cheerfully tell ourselves every January as we blearily hang a fresh calendar on the wall. But there will be no need for false alacrity this year because we’ve finally tracked down a calendar that is not only a practical tool but a delight for the senses, as well. You’ve heard of wine-of-of-the-month clubs? The limited edition Scented Calendar from the Paris-based fragrance purveyor Quintessence works on the same principle: Along with a bound calendar for your wall, you get one gloriously fragranced, individually packaged candle for each month of the year.
Each scent and its glass container were designed by a different personality to evoke the mood and feeling of a particular month. Couturier Azzedine Alaïa chose a beach-y Mediterranean scent that is the essence of July; the sculptor Jean-Michel Othoniel selected a tarry, cedar-vetiver scent (with black marbles floating in the clear wax!) that perfectly summons the dog days of August; the garden designer Madison Cox devised a spicy carnation scent that brings to mind September’s Indian summer; and the celebrity hairstylist Frédéric Fekkai dreamt up a honey-almond scent for November that makes us think of curling up on winter days with pastries and tea. We love how this calendar involves both your senses and your emotions by giving each month a different olfactory character.
And we also love that lighting a candle every day is a symbol of hope, an act that’s underscored by the fact that for every calendar sold, Quintessence will give 24 € to La Voix de l’Enfant, a French organization that helps abused children (the organization also designed January’s candle, a light, strawberry-lemon scent inspired by traditional French candies).
