Maison Violet Compliment Review (Nathalie Lorson) 2021+ The Compliment That Counts Draw

Maison Violet Compliment review

My fondness for the reborn Maison Violet and its remarkable – wholly composed by Nathalie Lorson – Héritage Collection has previously been expressed in my reviews of Pourpre D’Automne and Nuée Bleue. Apart from basic dates and events, however, the detailed history of the once illustrious (and then nearly forgotten for 60 years) French Perfume House remains largely elusive even for its three current owners: when Anthony Toulemonde, Paul Richardot and Victorien Sirot acquired the name “Violet”, no business archives, photos, ads, perfume bottles – let alone formulas – were handed to them; only some tantalising fragments of the past were unearthed after months of personal research. Considering that the 1827-founded Violet used to have several Parisian shops and even its own factory, as well as that it had released dozens of fragrances within a period of 126 years, one would expect hundreds of documents and objects to have survived (after all, the brand ceased activities as late as 1953). Yet, unless some private collectors or members of the family that once owned the House come forward and share some precious elements of documentation, the current trio of owners will just have to keep struggling to acquire bits and pieces of the mysterious puzzle of Violet’s past.

All the memorabilia and perfume bottles that Anthony, Paul and Victorien managed to amass so far were purchased with their own funds in auctions or antique shops (let it be noted that many important Violet flacons, like the Lucien Gaillard hand-painted ones from the 1920s, are hard to obtain; such bottles are always highly sought after by collectors willing to spend thousands of dollars on them). When the Maison Violet trio decided to launch a new fragrance inspired by the 1939-released perfume named “Compliments”, they had no concrete knowledge of what the latter had smelt like. Dropping the “s” from the original name, they decided to call the new creation “Compliment”, signifying “the one that really counts”, and make it a white floral. As Anthony Toulemonde told me, Mme Nathalie Lorson had already started working on the composition when the Maison Violet team managed to acquire a relatively well-preserved bottle of the old “Compliments”: it had also been a white floral, albeit an animalic one. Wanting to communicate a sense of heart-warming luminosity and comforting energy, the creative trio decided to follow a different olfactive path than the original scent’s.

Compliment by Maison Violet

Anthony tells me that the team kept a certain French expression in mind while trying to create “a fragrant hymn to sharing praise for others, and for oneself”. That expression was “jeter des fleurs”, literally meaning “throwing flowers”, and can be used to compliment others, or even oneself (if one is so inclined). Maison Violet Compliment indeed conveys a gratifying feeling of self-pampering that nonetheless feels motivated not by selfishness, but by sheer joy for life. The fragrance immediately displays its euphoric, exuberant white floralcy with the spicy, buttery tuberose appearing to dominate one minute, and the bright, intoxicating jasmine the other. Exotic ylang-ylang and sun-warmed orange blossom add to the scent’s humid, sensual vibe, creating the additional impression of a gardenia (especially during the first hour of application). In all real-life bouquets, some green contrast is necessary to showcase the whiteness of the flowers; in Maison Violet Compliment, eucalyptus and violet leaf serve as the fresh-green accents of the composition. Expanding that freshness into dewiness, tea-like freesia and peony-like palmarosa function as delicate counterpoints to the tuberose and jasmine. The protagonistic role of the white florals is not challenged by the fragrance’s base: the latter exists to discreetly support the flowers, to highlight and deepen their inherent aromatic properties with coumarinic hay, creamy vanilla and sweet benzoin. Overall, Maison Violet Compliment is not so much a fragrance that evolves in strikingly distinct stages, as it is a playful dance between its two stars, tuberose and jasmine, alternating in the lead; what essentially evolves are the floral tones, moods and nuances.

In the trying times we’ve been going through, many of us have found ourselves gravitating towards the emotional certainty and dependable comfort of undeniably beauteous scents. Maison Violet Compliment is such a fragrance: an olfactory expression of grace and generosity not only towards others, but also to oneself. After all, if we wish to bring solace, positivity and happiness to those around us, won’t we be so much more successful at it if we first manage to feel comfortable in our skin, serene at spirit and overjoyed at heart? The bright and beaming, instantly and universally perceivable beauty of Compliment accomplishes just that. Its soulful appeal is hard to leave anyone untouched.

Notes: Orange Blossom, Palmarosa, Eucalyptus, Freesia, Jasmine (Sambac and Grandiflorum), Tuberose, Ylang-Ylang, Benzoin, Vanilla.

Disclaimer: Many thanks to Maison Violet for my bottle of Compliment. The opinions are my own.

I love the way the reviewer speaks about fragrance as a comfort not only to yourself but to others. The writing in this review reads almost like poetry; it is beautiful. USA based

  • I most enjoyed Despina’s description of how the freesia and peony function as counterpoints to the tuberose and jasmine in this fragrance.
I have not yet tried any of Maison Violet’s fragrances.
    I live in Oregon, USA.
The fragrance that gets me the most compliments varies over time and season. Recently, it has been Nishane’s Hundred Silent Ways.

  • Great review, love learning the history of a fragrance house. The notes sound wonderful for Summertime. Love forals. Thank you for the chance.

  • I can already tell I will like it since it’s made by Nathalie Lorson. I love the description of the interaction of the florals. I live in Denmark, EU.

  • What a coincidence that Nathalie had already started working on Compliment, aiming for a white floral when a vintage bottle of Compliments was found and turned out to be a white floral as well though animalic. I am in US.

I have never heard of this house! I am particularly fascinated by the beginning where Despina talks about how the three new owners revived a very old brand. That was a very interesting and brave idea they had. But a lovely one. As far as hat I think of the Compliment…it sounds amazing! I really like white floral fragrances and this one is right down my alley! I’m from Illinois, US.

  • I love white flower perfumes and cannot seem to get enough of the beautiful ones. I have never tried any Maison Violet fragrances, but have just recently heard about Compliment and was thinking of looking for a sample. A bottle would be even nicer. 🙂 Oddly enough the perfume that has been getting compliments galore lately is Aroma M Botan perfume oil.

I loved the line about “throwing flowers”. I’m familiar with the brand, but don’t own any of their fragrances. I’m in Louisiana, USA.

  • Dubaiscents says:

I recently got a sample of this from Indigo Perfumery and really enjoyed the tuberose and jasmine as well as the definitive hay note in the dry down. It was really interesting to learn that the current owners of the brand know so little about the history due to lack of available information. I’m glad they continue their hunt and I hope people come forward to help. I’d love a bottle of Compliment. US.

  • snowflake15 says:

Thank you for the history lesson. How wonderful to find an old bottle and use for inspiration. I have not tried any MasonViolet perfumes yet. A sampler is on my wish list. USA

  • ‘Playful dance between two stars, tuberose and jasmine’,my favourite white flowers and the positivity of this Compliment can bring joy and comfort ! Thanks for the draw and the review, from Romania with love!

  • lilacdays says:

I loved the part about heart-warming luminosity. How beautiful is that?
I’ve never tried any fragrance from the brand. Many thanks for this draw. I live in France.

  • I have not tried anything from this house Maison Violet, but it would be nice to start with Compliment. I really appreciate a nice bouquet of white flowers in a fragrance.
    Thank you!

  • I found interesting the very first part of the article: Considering that the 1827-founded Violet used to have several Parisian shops and even its own factory, as well as that it had released dozens of fragrances within a period of 126 years, one would expect hundreds of documents and objects to have survived (after all, the brand ceased activities as late as 1953). Yet, unless some private collectors or members of the family that once owned the House come forward and share some precious elements of documentation, the current trio of owners will just have to keep struggling to acquire bits and pieces of the mysterious puzzle of Violet’s past.
This looks like an on-going journey for the now-owners of the house. It is like you wake up everyday and hope to find something new, hope that your prayers are answered to!! Really thrilling, full of mystery as you do not know what tomorrow will hold.
    Thanks! Europe

  • Thanks Despina for the review because I´ve never heard of this house Maison Violet fragrances it is so interesting how the very young new owners revived a very old brand and all the difficulties to find info on the perfume´s history of the house. They are really courageous . I am a fan of Nathalie Lorson, love his work in Lalique, so the revival is on great hands. She , as Despina explains, gave us and exuberant white floral with the spicy, buttery tuberose and the bright, intoxicating jasmine in a playful dance between this two flowers. Sounds like poetry! I live in Spain, EU.

Haven’t tried a perfume from Maison Violet fragrances, but from the review i can tell that i will love that jasmine note paired with the eucalyptus. I live in Romania, EU.

Great emotional review. I never tried Mason frangrance but love to. If you mix jasmin and rose, always you get lovely fragrance. I am in Sweden EU

  • First of all it is great that thee young gentlemen reanimated old perfume house with great heritage.
I liked description – love white florals and with vanilla and sweet benzoin- I find this perfume will be just amazing.
    USA

  • Love the way Despina described the jasmine and tuberose as dancing. I also appreciate the backstory of how Maison Violet was resurrected. I haven’t tried any Maison Violet fragrances but I recently saw a house review on YouTube that was wonderful. The fragrance I get complimented most on is Christian Dior’s Rouge Trafalgar. Thanks for the giveaway. In the USA.

  • I love when new fragrances are made in homage to older ones. That they started this one without knowing the scent of the original is amazing! I haven’t tried any Maison Violet fragrances, but I do want to. I am in the US.
The fragrance that brings me the most compliments are usually unisex. The specific one that stands out is Brooklyn Euphorium, Suedois. It is special.

  • This review has a way of introducing many who are not aware of Self-Care to a more open way of thinking. I loved it, Despina <3 This part spoke loud and clear to me: "an olfactory expression of grace and generosity not only towards others but also to oneself. After all, if we wish to bring solace, positivity, and happiness to those around us, won’t we be so much more successful at it if we first manage to feel comfortable in our skin, serene at the spirit, and overjoyed at heart? "
I have not yet had the privilege of trying any of these fragrances. I am in the USA.

  • Christos GX says:

Awesome review,it seems like an incredible fragrance even though i have not tried any from the particular house. What captured me in the review was the fact that i could imagine myself walking with some lady that wears a gorgeous gown into some flower fields and enjoing a talk about our favorite authors.I live in Greece.

  • GennyLeigh says:

What an interesting historical hunt! I’m glad they were able to acquire some information and memorabilia from the original house. Tuberose, jasmine, orange blossom, freesia and the somewhat unexpected eucalyptus sound like a white floral olfactory delight. I’m not familiar with any Maison Violet’s scents. Commenting from MD, USA.

  • I’m so happy to be learning about Maison Violet! I hope to sample their fragrances! What a fascinating history! Despina’s review is enchanting, especially when read in context of the Pourpre d’Automne & Nuee Blue reviews. Despina does such a great job articulating the liminal space the perfume makers create & play within (I love the term “retro-modern”). From the Nuee-Blue review, Despina writes about the “electrically charged rush of air just before the storm breaks.” All of these perfumes have that moving tension (from summer to fall; playful dance between tuberose & jasmine) that retraces the foundational gulf la maison is building its bridge across (past-present). I have never had the pleasure of sampling Maison Violet, but I hope to do so. I live in Iowa, USA. For years, I received compliments from an old formulation of Hermes, 24 Faubourg. Lately, I’ve gotten compliments for Serge Lutens, A La Nuit.

  • I love this house, thank you Despina for the review, I enjoyed the connection in being kind to oneself and others with Complement. I was lucky enough to get a cycle 01, which was my introduction to this house, so this is my favorite thus far. My most complemented scents are usually my most projecting scents (BR540, Angel Muse) but I much prefer the more unique and interesting scents that are just for me. Commenting from NY

  • I have not tested anything from this house, but Compliment sounds like a compliment getter 🙂 Jokes aside, I think my special other will enjoy this one, and of course, I will enjoy smelling it on her. White flowers, vanilla, benzoin – all sound like a good mix.
    Thanks! EU

  • Ohhh, this sounds so delightful.
My heart skipped beat after beat as I went on reading “tuberose”, then “jasmine”, then “gardenia”… I love white flowers!
Compliment indeed sounds as a fragrance which fits its name – white flowers are real compliment getters and they can indeed provide comfort through the touch of feminine glamour they provide.

My compliment getters, hmmm…somehow they are very safe perfumes. I have gotten many with Micallef Black, Eau de l’orangerie by Lancome and…*drum roll* Marc Jacobs’ Daisy. Actually, the latter has gotten me MANY.
    Never tried Maison Violet.

    I am in the EU.
    Thanks!

  • I enjoyed reading about “throwing flowers”. Receiving and sharing flowers is always a warm heartfelt experience. I haven’t tried anything from this brand. Thanks for the opportunity. Mich USA

  • Param Iyer says:

Despina is a wonderful reviewer. I loved the part about tuberose and jasmine; tuberose is one of my favorite notes in perfumery. I have tried a sample of Maison Violet’s Sketch and loved it, might purchase a full bottle.
Roja Diaghilev gets me most compliments, it’s my favorite scent.
    Terneuzen, The Netherlands, EU.

  • JulietteC says:

I also see this passion for perfumes as “a gratifying feeling of self-pampering that nonetheless feels motivated not by selfishness, but by sheer joy for life”…

I recently took a hiatus from perfume, but I keep returning to my white florals for self – pampering. I am mostly drawn to buttery tuberose, angelic jasmin and royal orange blossom. I also love a good lily, a pretentious narcissum or a creamy gardenia. Right now, my favorite is Beyond Love, by Kilian. Others… Carnal Flower, Love and Tears, Comme L’Amore, Apom.

Thank you for this chance and for this review, Despina. This house is very interesting for me, but I haven’t had the chance to try any of the creations. In the past, I was interested in Pourpre d’Automne.
    I live in EU, Romania.

  • wandering_nose says:

Thank you for the amazing review, Despina! I have indeed been left deeply touched by both the outstandingly different history of the house – full of question marks and mysteries, and the concept behind the fragrance itself. Those have been some trying times no doubt, and I also found myself reaching for scents that exude comfort, warmth and serenity. “Compliment” sounds like one of such scents, backed up by a good bit of history standing behind its ancestor. A beautiful true floral I would be delighted to win. I haven’t tried any Maison Violet perfumes so far. The fragrance I get a lot compliments on is Coromandel. I am based in Ireland, EU

  • Enjoyed reading the history of Maison Violet brand in Despina’s review of Maison Violet Compliment. The perfume comes in a beautiful bottle. It was interesting to learn how white floral perfumes, generally, have contrasting green notes with them, in this case, eucalyptus and violet leaves. I haven’t tried anything by Maison Violet, yet. The perfumes that get me the most compliments, from myself (Ha!!) and others, are Sartorial and Levantium by Penhaligon’s, Antaeus, Oud Muataq, Treachery and Tempo Rubato by Shawn Maher, L’eau d’Issey Pour Homme by Issey Miyake, Obsession by Calvin Klein, Halston Z-14, Honey Aoud and Black Aoud by Montale, African Leather by Memo Paris, Stetson Black, Drakkar Noir by Guy Laroche, Beverley Hills 90210 Metal Jeans, Lapidus Pour Homme, Lapidus Black Extreme, Midnight Oud, and I haven’t even started yet 🙂 Thanks Despina for a review of Maison Violet Compliment, an uplifting perfume. Thanks also for the draw. Writing from the USA.

  • Such an interesting situation-the history of this house going missing in such a short time. I love that they were keeping this phrase “jeter des fleurs” in mind and that they aren’t re-creating the little bit of history they have but building something new. Thank you for the review & the generous draw. I’m in the US.

  • Lillyhollowayblog says:

I love that older houses are getting revived. I have read about Compliment before but this review has me very interested now. I live in the US.

  • I enjoyed learning about the long and interesting history of this house, it’s quite unique! And I’ve been curious about Maison Violet for a while now. I can’t say I’ve ever received any compliment for my fragrance but that’s okay, I wear perfume for me only 🙂

Thank you for the draw! I’m in Finland, EU.

Beautiful review, I love learning a bit about the history of the house and the story behind the bottle. I am not familiar with Maison Violet but it does sound like interesting house! From the fragrances that I own at the moment the best compliment maker is le labo noir 29.

  • Claumarchini says:

Thanks so much Despina for yet another great review! I must admit…I had never heard of Maison Violet, it’s such a mystery the fact that the new owners could not find documents and papers about the Maison: an intriguing story indeed!
How can one say no to white flowers??? Compliment seems like a wonderful, bright and comforting fragrance and I would love to be the lucky winner. Greetings from Italy

  • Danu Seith-Fyr says:

Here is a compilation of all the things I love, Violet Fragrances, the writing of dear Despina and Tuberose and Jasmine. The fact that Compliment is a touching flight of beauty in these times appealed. Here in Compliment we are gifted the opportunity to share such joy and delight with others when we wear it. Thank you Despina. Right now in this heated weather I always gat compliments with Atelier des Ors, Riviera Lazuli. I live in SW France.

  • I loved how Despina spoke about how we need to feel happy ourselves before we can make a positive impact on others’ moods – I think too many don’t realise that happiness has to come from within to be genuine and infectious, including the past me. But when I smelled Compliment, it made me smile without even realising it – such was how sunny and radiant the fragrance was! Its creamy, solar notes just remind me of a summer vacation to the seaside – I love it, and it genuinely made me happy!

I’ve smelled all of Maison Violet’s fragrances, and Compliment is definitely my favourite. So far my most complimented fragrance has been Y by YSL. Cheers from France!

  • This fragrance sounds nice. The review was fire. I haven’t tried this house. I live in Indiana USA

  • I had no idea about the history of the house or the difficulty in acquiring the materials relating to its history. I love the expression “jeter des fleurs” and how it related to the creation of the fragrance. It really sounds beautiful and hopefully will bring joy to the wearer as well as the surroundings! I have not heard of this house before and haven’t tried anything from it yet. I don’t usually wear fragrances for compliments, but the last one I received I was wearing Alaia. I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

Thank you for the great review Despina.

I really liked the way you described the interplay of florals in this scent.

I get a lot of compliments from Guerlain fragrances.

What I enjoyed about Despinas review on Maison Violet Compliment. I loved learning about the legendary perfume company that ended in 1953 and was revived by modern day distant relatives. They brought a brilliant perfumer Nathalie Lorson on board and recreated a masterpiece that was released in 1939 called compliments. They dropped the S and called in compliment. This is a modernized white floral take on the original and it sounds beautiful. I haven’t tried anything from Maison Violet fragrances. I am from Ohio, USA. The fragrance that gets me the most compliments is Tiziana Terenzi Kirke.

Wow! This article really hit me. Especially at the end. This right here: “ In the trying times we’ve been going through, many of us have found ourselves gravitating towards the emotional certainty and dependable comfort of undeniably beauteous scents. Maison Violet Compliment is such a fragrance: an olfactory expression of grace and generosity not only towards others, but also to oneself. ” couldn’t be more spot on. Grace is so essential. I love giving compliments. Sincere compliments. Love it even more when they’re received as if I’m “throwing flowers” (love learning that French phrase, too!). This frag sounds like it’s a true beauty.
