MAISON TAHITE Cafe Gourmand review

Maison Tahite Café Gourmand by Olya Bar©

A new chapter is on the menu at Maison Tahite, the latest Café Gourmand is part of the new collection dedicated to all things coffee. This is no regular café, though. I imagine sipping on a steaming cup of freshly brewed dark roast in an old bookshop, walls lined with worn-in leather couches, and shelves bursting with books holding stories of adventures, love, and faraway travels. The intoxicating scent of coffee is slowly seeping into every part of the interior, mixing with the strong smoky aroma of the fireplace. Oh, this is one woody gourmand.

I recall speaking with the founder, Roberto Drago, and he discussed his plans to take the most well-known and loved ingredients and explore each fully and in-depth. He has succeeded with the most delicious collection of Vanilla perfumes, quickly followed by the equally mouthwatering Cacao one. The newly launched Coffee collection explores various facets of this addictive bean. To this very day, there are many legends surrounding the origin of coffee.

However, we can trace coffee cultivation and trade to the Arabian Peninsula. By the 15th century, coffee was grown in the Yemeni district of Arabia, and by the 16th century, it was known in Persia, Egypt, Syria, and Turkey. By the 17th century, European travelers to the Near East brought back stories of an unusual dark black beverage that invigorated the senses and became a replacement for the usual beer or wine beverages enjoyed with the morning meal. Its popularity exploded, and it was soon becoming popular across the continent. By the end of the century, there were over 300 coffee houses in London, and it is the perfect setting that comes to mind when I think of Maison Tahite Cafe Gourmand. Whether you’re a coffee connoisseur or don’t particularly care about how you get your caffeine fix, there’s no denying that the smell of freshly-brewed coffee in the morning is stimulating. The chemistry behind its aroma, however, is far from simple. It is a rather complex collection of chemical compounds, many completely odorless. The smell of coffee has always piqued my interest. Incredibly complex, it can be fruity and floral, caramelized and nutty, bitter and acidic, spicy and earthy. All the magic is hidden in the brewing process of the coffee and isn’t about chemical change – instead, it’s about extracting compounds from the roasted coffee beans.

Maison Tahite Café Gourmand by Olya Bar

Maison Tahite Café Gourmand features the CO2 extract of Arabic Coffee. The opening is sprinkled with golden saffron greeting you from the first spray and is both spicy and lactonic with a robust nutty heart that gives me a touch of Nutella vibes. There is a strong dry herbal note of sage peeking through, while the smokiness of the vetiver adds a piquant layer of depth to the composition.

In my search for the perfect coffee scent, I have fallen hard for only a few, a soft and rose-centered Montale Intense Cafe, a strong and dark espresso shot of  Akro Awake, and the frothy cream of lavender-infused Maison Margiela Coffee Break are among some of my favorites. Maison Tahite Cafe Gourmand is now among my absolute go-to coffee fragrances, and I have been reaching for it often in the mornings as I’m starting my often-hectic work days.

As I wear Maison Tahite Cafe Gourmand more, I discover that it feels somewhat familiar for me, and it suddenly dawns on me. It’s like a modern spin on the traditional Italian biscotti, tapping into that familiar and comforting feeling of wrapping your hands around a warm cup of coffee with a splash of hazelnut milk and dipping a biscotti in it. It transported me back to the time I was living and studying in Italy, and I recall that in every tavern, café, or a restaurant, a good meal would always end with a cup of coffee and a side of biscotti. It’s equally rejuvenating at the start of the day as it is soothing and comforting when the night falls, and I’m craving something warm, rich and beautifully familiar.

Notes: Saffron, Milk, Arabic Coffee CO2, Hazelnut, Patchouli, Sage, Vetiver, Musk, Sandalwood.

  • Love the aroma of coffee, the delicate fragrance that can let you get out of a comfy bed happily.

The bottle is so chic. I’ve come to prefer darker glass and really see that it is more protective of the delicate perfumes and oils.

So much care with the respect for their environment.

I want to drink a coffee in a tavern where I can feel the aroma of freshly ground coffee wrapping my hands around a warm cup of coffee

  • The beautiful and stunning coffee notes of this fragrance spark my interest. I just love the scent of coffee so much, this must smell magically. This fragrance for sure would be one of my favorite winter – autumn fragrances. Just reading the notes really makes me want to try it out. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

  • Yum! I adore coffee and books, and love that it has some Nutella and biscotti vibes. Would love to win, im from eu

  • Brad Woolslayer says:

I like how the fragrance is not just that of a cup of coffee, but also of the atmosphere surrounding the cup, from the bookshelves to the leather couches. I love the smell of a fresh cup of coffee and this one sounds really nice. I live in Maryland USA.

  • ThatMulattoDude says:

Coffee’s my thing as well. I currently have Boss the Scent Private Accord which is excellent. Black and sweet is how I like it and biscotti is the perfect pairing with it. I sometimes partake in that myself at home. I would definitely enjoy adding this fragrance to my collection. Appreciate the giveaway opportunity! Many blessings from Virginia, USA!

  • John Michael says:

Olya reminds me of my buddy Carlos @ BFL… not a fan of these types of fragrances but this one sounds interesting. I live in Boston.

  • Olya says Maison Tahite Café Gourmand explores the theme of coffee and has extract of arabic coffee. It also reminds her of Italian biscotti. Like Olya, I also enjoy Montale Intense Cafe. I am in US

  • Coffee is my drug for sure. I am surprised I dont own more coffee scents. Montale Intense Cafe is delicious and with it falling near Cafe Gourmound am intrigued. The woody bent appeals to me too. I live in the US

  • Love this composition and so proud that this italian brand is well known outside fhe country. Caffè gourmand is my favorite fron the caffe line. Even though also the vanille and cacao are great. Greetings from Milan!

  • Coffee. One of the first smells of every morning, for me anyway.
I get my coffee last before I head out to work, but imaging if that’s what I spray and sniff, while I get ready to battle my day.

Nutella? Now you got me more into this.
Hazelnut coffee, to me is one of my favorites, and it would ge exquisite to have this one in my collection.

By the way, I like Maison Tahité idea of sustainability in their packaging.

    Cheers, from Massachusetts

  • I really like maison tahiti, prices are relatively affordable and quality of the bottle and fragrance are wonderful. I currently only own vanillade, but just ordered samples of three other vanillas and one coffee scent recently reviewed (ristretto) through a decant site. I love the idea of a pick me up during the day. I have heartburn so have to limit my coffee, this is a great way to get that stimulant effect but through smell rather than consumption! Ive never been a fan of biscotti, i have a feeling ive just always had bad ones and it isnt biscotti’s fault, but do love the smell. I live in bellingham, wa.

  • Yum, this sounds mouth watering. I’ve only recently opened up to coffee-focused gourmands. Often I find myself too sensitive to the coffee notes and they overpower everything else for me. In the recent months, however, I have found a few that I have really been able to enjoy. Maybe my nose is evolving? I love Olya’s description of this one and how it took her back to mornings in the coffee shop. The biscotti and hazelnut elements sound really delicious. Reading from NC, USA.

  • Cafe Gourmand sounds amazing I love biscotti and hazelnut and coffee, so I know this will be great for me.

  • An absolute “go to” coffee fragrance sounds good to me. I haven’t been to a coffee shop in a bookstore (Powells Portland) since before the pandemic. I hadn’t thought about that for awhile, I must go back. I think I’ll go back a batch of biscotti now! Thanks for the review and the chance. USA.

  • I hope I am not the only one who is like this l, but I smell almost everything and always have.
I know the used book store that the review reminds me of…
Hopefully the scent will as well.

  • I love the CO2 technology, scents are so vivid! This sounds fantastic: pretty much always “craving something warm, rich and beautifully familiar” these days. And a touch of Nutella, yes please!! Reading in the US.

  • Bookshops biscotti and brewed coffee.
    Leather couches and old books.
I can’t think of a better way to spend an afternoon or evening.

  • Lactonic fragrances are tricky but with these notes I am super intrigued. I love thé addition of hazelnut and saffron. The great gourmands continue!!! Thank you for the opportunity.

  • This fragrance sounds very cozy like a relaxing sunday, especially with the comparison of this fragrance to drinking a dark roast in an old library Sunday. This is my first time hearing of coffee co2, but it was very interesting to learn how they extract scents and have sustainability as their main objective. I would love to try a bottle of this, sounds amazing. From TX, USA.

  • Love how Olya mentioned that it’s the perfect, rich scent to start the day. Like many, I start my day with coffee. It’s not just about the flavor, it’s also about the routine. I think this would be such a lovely fragrance in the colder months because the notes made it feel warm and inviting.

Also, I really appreciate the added note about brand sustainability. Wish more brands would pay greater attention to their packaging materials as well.

  • First of all, I’m a huge coffee addict and loooove coffee fragrances. But what really sparks my interest based on Olya’s review of Maison Tahite is the fragrance being both spicy and lactonic with a robust nutty heart that gives her a touch of Nutella vibes. Did I mention I loooove Nutella? Coffee and Nutella???? Oh, my….

  • I like Maison Tahite’s idea of taking well-known and loved ingredients and exploring them. I had a chance to smell a few from Vanilla and Cocoa and I loved them. Coffee seems the next logical thing, so I would like to own this, since I am also a coffee lover (who isn’t?!:))). References to Italy’s cafes and restaurants also convinced me pretty quickly:)
Thanks for the give away, I live in the EU.

  • I think Cafe Gourmand really stands up to its name! I drink coffee with milk almost on a daily basis. Sometimes I add a little bit of hazelnut syrup in it and I am really in for a treat! I am sure that I will love Cafe Gourmand knowing my love for delicious coffee.
    Thanks! Europe

  • It’s safe to say that my love for coffee based perfumes preceded my love for coffee as a drink. I remember that I had a large decant of New Haarlem that I wore non-stop. It was that good. Seeing that Maison Tahite has quite a few coffee perfumes in their portfolio, I think is time to give this house more attention. Perhaps they already released my future next favorite coffee perfume.
    Thanks for the draw!
I am based in the EU

  • Coffee is a very delicate and beautiful smell and I love how it is used in perfume. I love Maison Tahite and would love to try this particular one and add it to my collection. I think that Hazelnut would do wonders paired with a milky coffee accord.

    I live in Sweden, EU.

  • Nice review Olya! After Ristretto, Roberto Drago delivers another coffee scent , Cafe Gourmand, with Stéphanie Bakouche as head barista!. Coffee follows an amazing process from the terroir/soil, the variety, the processing method all in origin, then the magical roasting and then the brewing to wonder our senses : aroma and flavour. Here an ” hazelnuty” coffee scent uses a CO2 extract of Arabic Coffee introduced by a saffron and a milky accord that mixed with hazelnut must resemble the nutella smell Olya catchs. The perfume ends dryer with the sage, vetiver and woods used. Cafe and cantuccini: who doesn´t like it! I live in Spain, EU.

  • I am an avid coffee drinker and I usually can’t start my day without a cup of good strong moka. However, I usually have (at least) a second cup of coffee in the late afternoon and that one can be a bit more “gourmand” and less “practical”. So I either drink a caffè latte, very aromatic Turkish coffee or I tweak my filter coffee with different spices and cream. And I absolutely have to accompany it by a slice of cake, a brownie or, last but definitely not least, biscuits. I actually remember how when we were small, my mother used to let us have a taste of her coffee by allowing us to dip one biscotto in it. What a treat it was!
So Olya’s description of Café Gourmand definitely hit a sweet spot in my heart and triggered some nostalgia.
The frag itself sounds fantastic: a woody gourmand with an opening of saffron, a heart of Nutella and crisp aromatic notes in the base, all revolving, of course, around our most beloved beverage, that is coffee.
Would love to win this from Denmark, EU.
    Thanks for the draw!

  • Olya has a nice list of coffee scents, which I love as well. I appreciate the comparisons of this warm, Italian coffee to those. I’d love to try it. New Jersey, USA

  • I liked the picture of coffee with the chocolate biscotti, my favorite. The notes are fantastic, especially the sage and hazelnut coffee . Thanks for another awesome review and draw. Mich USA

  • Almost all the facts about Coffee stated by Olya are highly (with a big H) debatable.

“By the 17th century, European travelers to the Near East brought back stories of an unusual dark black beverage”

Coffee was available in Europe since the beginning of 16th century, some Culinary and Barista schools claim even earlier. When I was trying to fulfill my dreams of becoming a Pastry Chef, being a trainee in Paris, was told it’s most likely 15th century.
I have decent amount of coffee fragrances , including Montale Intense Cafe, and Akro Awake, but the liked by Olya “lavender-infused Maison Margiela Coffee Break” is not my cup of tea.
Her take on Café Gourmand made me think of making Biscoff Buttercream Cake, and later on sharing it with friends with a few cups of espresso.
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign

  • Books and coffee – perfect combination. Olya’s review of Maison Tahite Café Gourmand reminded me of many times spent in either coffee houses or bookstores with coffee shops in them. The history of coffee spreading in Europe was very interesting too. I am quite curious about Maison Tahite Café Gourmand especially as there are lovely notes around the smell of coffee in this perfume. Generally not a big fan of gourmand perfumes (they tend to be too sweet and sugary), I would love to try Maison Tahite Café Gourmand. Thanks for the review and draw. From continental USA.

I seem to be developing some strange obsession with the fragrances of Maison Tahité – every time there is a mention of one of them on here, I literally drop whatever it is I’m doing to immerse myself in the ocean of vanilla/ cocoa/ coffee themed pleasure. The recent review of I_Ristretto was so scrumptious, and now Olya’s brilliant story about the origins of coffee and likening Café Gourmand to sitting in an old atmospheric bookshop with a fireplace plain stole my heart. The perfume sounds fantastic as a wake-me-up scent and as a dose of aromatic, lactonic, nutty and slightly smoky wonderfulness anytime. Count me in! I am in the EU

I am big fan of coffee and love CV offee notes in perfumery!

  • Coffee is one of my favorite perfume notes and combined with spices and a lactonic note, it sounds like the perfect cozy winter perfume! I also love Maison Tahité’s commitment to sustainability. would love to win a bottle of Café Gourmand! I’m in MN, USA.

  • A coffee based gourmand that’s not too sweet sounds lovely. The CO2 technology used to make an extract of arabica coffee seems like it would yield pure aroma. The combination with saffron, milk and hazelnut seems like it would mellow any bitterness and the base of patchouli, vetiver, woods and musk ground the fragrance. Maison Tahite is coming out with some really interesting gourmands! MD, USA.

  • Saw a lot of similarity in my own morning routine with Olya’s. I too frequently reach for a good coffee scent (Xerjoff – Golden Dallah, Kerosene – Followed, Montale – Intense Cafe) to help wake myself up in the morning. This would be my first Maison Tahite , and it certainly sounds up my alley! The notes described are reminding me of Nutella on a toasted bagel with a rich coffee. Crossing my fingers that I win! Ship to Pennsylvania.

  • I have no experience with Maison Tahite , Café Gourmand is comforting coffee fragrance , with hazelnut , saffron and slightly herbal feel.
Sounds like a fragrance i’d gladly wear, and I imagine Café Gourmand is appropriate not just for the Winter , but all year round, I’m in.
    Nice giveaway, USA

  • I have enjoyed all of Maison Tahite’s creations thus far, but have yet to try the coffee collection. I love coffee, so the entire coffee collection appeals to me. The notes in Cafe Gourmand sound absolutely delicious. Olya’s comments about it being spicy, lactonic, and having Nutella vibes are very intriguing. Anything described as being like biscotti is a must-try for me. Cafe Gourmand sounds like a delicious gourmand that I would love to own. I also love the house’s commitment to sustainability and love that a plantable card is included in every package. Thank you, Olya, for the great review, and thank you to Maison Tahite for the generous giveaway. I am located in the USA.

  • Wonderful review Olya! The history of coffee cultivation and its popularity worldwide is a really interesting one, and it was a compelling lead-in to your thoughts about Maison Tahite Cafe Gourmand. Coffee fragrances can be hard to get right, but I appreciate that this Maison Tahite collection tries to capture some of the complexity of just that one note. Cafe Gourmand sounds like a particularly sweet and comforting take, but the flourishes of saffron and sage are a little unexpected.

I’m in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • I have wanted a good coffee based gourmand fragrance for a while. What peaked my interest wasn’t the coffee or the hazelnut (although they are both excellent fragrances on their own), but the addition of patchouli, Vetiver and musk. I live in a small NJ town and have a rather nice mom and pop Cafe that has been in my town for 15 years. I love the scene of myself and my wife on a Saturday morning enjoying each other’s company in the Cafe with our gourmand fragrance on (yes we are nerdy enough to wear matching clothes and fragrance). I do love her so, and deeply enjoy her company.

  • Nice reading of a touch of coffee history and the popularity it gained in Europe. Did I read it has Nutella vibes? Mmmmmm, sounds delicious!

  • I always thought that coffee comes from Africa or South America and somehow never linked it with Arabia although now I can see all the signs that it has great history there. From Arabian Peninsula I have only been traveling to Turkey and indeed coffee is a meaningful ritual there.
Love for coffee can take many forms but the scent of this dark magic beans is for me the supreme way to connect with its spell.
I would love to win a bottle of Maison Tahite Café Gourmand.

There is a strong dry herbal note of sage peeking through, while the smokiness of the vetiver adds a piquant layer of depth to the composition.”

I love you Olya, but I’m a coffee snob and connoisseur , and also Ancient History Diploma in on the wall right next to me,so :
    1. Even though some are considered to be more of a legends , some historians believe based on different chronicles , you could trace the origin of coffee to 13th , and some suggest even 9th century.
    2. Coffee became officially known in Europe in early 16th century
    3. You can’t use the name of Turkey, and I’ll explain why your source is 100% wrong
    a) Even though the English name of “Turkey” is mostly related to mid 14th century work by Geoffrey Chaucer , The Republic of Turkey aka Turkey as a country was created was in 1922 , after the overthrowing the Ottoman State , and Sultan Mehmet VI .
    b) The Ottoman Empire actually introduced, for the most part at least coffee to Europe, but Ottoman Empire does not equal Turkey !!!
    c) The Arabic Turkiyya is actually related not to Ottoman Empire, but to the Mamluk Empire/Sultanat
And to summarize, there was no such thing as “country Turkey” back in 16th century.

Now back to the original topic , i still haven’t smelled the new Maison Tahite coffee fragrances, but I know all from the Vanilla, and the Cacao Collections, and i like all , but one .
If I have to rate my favorite ones:
    1. Vicious Cacao
    2. Cacao 2
    3. Vanextasy

I think Café Gourmand is soothing coffee fragrance with “don’t bother me please” feel.

What interests me based on Olya’s review of Maison Tahite Café Gourmand is that I love Coffee based fragrances and gourmand fragrances. I loved learning more about Maison Tahite. I love the fact that they have an entire line of fragrances dedicated to Vanilla, Cacao, and now for Coffee, so I would love to explore them. I loved learning about the history of coffee that dates all the way back to the 15th century. Like Olya, I am always looking for the perfect coffee fragrance. I am from Ohio, USA.

  • Hi. I’m Colombian and coffee’s a part of my everyday as are fragrances, we thank our god for these beautiful things. What interested me about the article was the mention of the experience one gets with this gourmand. I though of the notes and all seem great and not too complex. It would be nice to win. I live in los angeles, CA.

  • Regis Monkton says:

I appreciate the historical aspect of this review. I can like coffee-centric fragrances, e.g. I can like Akro “Awake”. Olya’s description of how the saffron, sage, and vetiver are like in this fragrance caused me to be intrigued to try it. I live in the U.S.A.

  • This sounds decadent! I really enjoy coffee fragrances but it needs to be the right balance for me. I don’t like them to be to powdery or creamy. I didn’t care for Coffee Break because of that and the addition of lavender. THIS however, sounds like the perfect blend that invokes that wonderful coffee aroma. Your description “It’s like a modern spin on the traditional Italian biscotti” sealed the deal for me. I want a gourmand coffee fragrance that still maintains the integrity of the coffee note. It sounds amazing!

    I live in the USA.

I love the smell of coffee and it is hard to find a perfume with a pretty prominent coffee note (for obvious reasons). I love to use of an Arabic CO2 extraction, along with saffron and milk to compliment. Quite curious about the use of sage in this. The use of hazelnut definitely brings biscotti to mind,

Wonderful review Olya! What sparks my interest based on Olya’s review of Maison Tahite Café Gourmand is how she describes it as more than a regular cafe, but rather evoking a cafe combined with an old bookshop, with leather couches and coziness oozing out of every corner, as well as the well-worn smell of books and fantastical stories. This image really appeals to me! I live in the US.
