Maison Crivelli Bois Datchai Review (Dorothee Piot) 2020 + Smoky Tea Draw

Maison Crivelli Bois Datchai review

Maison Crivelli Bois Datchai by Olya Bar

Aromatic and dreamlike, Bois Datchai, created by Dorothee Piot for Maison Crivelli, is a sweet resinous spice fest of freshly cut wood on a chilly day. It reminded me of being a kid and the summers in our country home a few hours away from Moscow. We spent most of our time exploring the forests nearby, climbing every tree in sight, and stuffing our bellies with freshly picked berries growing in the forest filled with pine trees. The scent of sweet resin on our hands mixed with the ink-colored juice of berries was unforgettable and would take hours to wash out. Those days in the most beautiful raw nature shaped my taste for fragrances in many ways, and I am forever grateful for the olfactory works of art that allow me to go back in time with a spritz.

Maison Crivelli Bois Datchai greets you with a piercing aroma of freshly muddled blackcurrant buds and a comforting whiff of steaming black tea and is one of my personal favorites from the collection. A slight medicinal aspect of fresh herbs and spices is noticeable as if you were brewing a cup of tea amid an ancient forest someplace in the North. Warming your cold fingers over a fire pit with the crackling sound of cedarwood, you feel slowly drifting away as the woodsy fragrance dances all around you. A smoky sweet heart of cedarwood smells of freshly cut wood and a slight undertone of a Christmas tree. I hear an imaginary note of juicy blackberries muddled with pine needles. The heart of balsamic resin seeping from the tree bark is enveloped with aromatic cinnamon, enticing and warm; it creates a hot resinous accord. The soft tactility of leather in the base of Bois Datchai balanced with a sweet earthiness of patchouli oil lends a perfect tenderness during the last stages of the fragrance.

The woodiness, stoutly built around multifaceted patchouli, slowly becomes more balsamic with a touch of incense wafting in the air; it makes me crave a night around a fire telling folk stories and legends of the forest. It’s magical; with a subtle transformation from a slightly moist opening of steamy tea to the dryness of the leather as it morphs on the skin.

I hear a distant howl. The whisper around me becomes louder, and the shadows of the forest creatures are more vivid. As the crimson moon lights up the sky, they are coming out to play.

Notes: Blackcurrant buds absolute, black tea absolute, cinnamon essential oil, patchouli essential oil, cedarwood essential oil, leather accord.

Perceived note: blackberry

Olya is such a great writer. I love how she describes this fragrance moving from tea to leather. This one sounds incredible! I don’t have a favorite MC. USA

  • Now I want to go camping! What a beautiful review from Olya. I’ve not tried any Maison Crivelli scents, but I would love to. I am in the US

  • Maison Crivelli Bois Datchai seems like a resinous woody composition that may appeal to those who enjoy nature. thanks for the draw. I am in US.

  • Oh my – this description and review by Olya and the accompanying pictures makes me ache to get out, camp, forget the Covid fiasco, smell some forest air and sip some black or green tea shooting the breeze with friends, exchanging stories of our lives. Maison Crivelli Bois Datchai seems to be a second best option when that is not possible, wearing it and sipping tea and watching some outdoorsy documentaries or movies. Thanks for the draw and this review and reminding of the natural world, and to the perfumers for making such a perfume, which is much needed in a noisy, industrialized, stressed out world. Not familiar with this brand, so no favorites, yet. Writing from the USA.

This sounds like a really interesting fragrance. I enjoyed reading about how this fragrance reminded Olya of her childhood in Moscow, and the smell of her hands after playing in the forest. I live in Maryland USA.

  • Olya took me to the forest with her. Isn’t amazing how scent can take us places? Blackcurrant is a favorite as is patchouli, so this sounds amazing. I’m seduced by the distant howl and creatures stirring. I haven’t smelled anything by Maison Crivelli, but hope to try this (along with wanting to try Absinthe Boréale). USA

  • I loved how Olya described the experience of this scent – I felt transported to the forest scene she described from her childhood. I have not tried any Maison Crivelli perfumes yet. Thank you for the giveaway. I am in Maryland, USA.

  • You had me at “forest filled with pine trees.” I’m definitely a nature lover and love to smell earthy. That perceived note of blackberry has me intrigued. Thanks for the opportunity to sniff. Mich USA

  • I loved the imagery of drinking tea by a fire. So cozy! I find each of the Maison Crivelli fragrances to be both surprising and familiar; I just started exploring them via a discovery set so I don’t have a favorite yet as I like most of them, but would love a full bottle of Bois Datchai. MA, USA

  • Bravo to Maison Crivelli for releasing Bois Datchai, and to Olya Bar for her throwback kind of review. Freshly picked berries, pine trees , woodiness, patchouli, a touch of incense… can you repeat that again please? Like Olya, I’m thinking about my youth, no doubt a distant haul . Bois Datchai is a must try fragrance.
    Thanks for the draw

  • Great review Olya. Love how she describes the fragrance in the forest and the moon brings out the fragrance. Never tried anything from the house. Born and raised in the USA. Thanks

  • Oh my! Berries and tea with the smell of woods all around. Makes me long to go camping and listen to the crackle of the fire and the crickets! Lovely description. I haven’t tried anything from Maison Crivelli, but Olya certainly paints an appealing picture. SherylJ (USA)

  • This sounds like a beautiful woodsy experience! I’m very interested in exploring this house as I’ve been hearing great things. Thank you for the opportunity. USA

  • Resinous, medicinal, warm: this sounds like something I would love. I really enjoyed Olya’s recollections of nature outside of Moscow and this scent’s evocation of those memories. I’ve never tried a Maison Crivelli fragrance, but am keen to experience this one. I’m in the US.

  • Jarrid Steele says:

A boutique in the city where I work recently obtained the whole collection and I was fortunate enough to smell them all and Bois Datchai was definitely a standout for me along with Lys Solaberg.

This review is wonderfully worded and poetic. I have to agree that it even with its relatively simple note breakdown it does evoke memories of my childhood exploring forest in Quebec, Canada.

I am living and working in Canada right now but I do have a mailing address in the USA. I would love to be entered into the giveaway.

  • Olga’s reviews are already stunning and it was nice to have already smelled this scent and here her description. This and Santal Volcanique are my favorite from the line. Bois Datchai is perfectly spicy and woody, this would be a staple for the colder months!

  • I enjoyed most the perceived note being blackberry. I haven’t heard of the house until today so no fave. US

  • The one thing I enjoyed the most of this review was Olya talking about her childhood and sharing how she entered to this wonderful fragrance world. About this fragrance, the black tea notes and the final leathery notes are the things got me very intriguing about. Would love to try it. I don`t have a favourite MC, yet. USA.

  • This sounds perfect for the colder weather beautifully cozy and fresh In a winter woods way. I love the idea of a tea and tree scent. In maryland.

  • Thank you to Olya for sharing her beautiful scent memory with us. I adore tea fragrances and have a soft spot for resinous cedar notes (my husband is a woodworker and woody notes remind me of watching him saw lumber). Bois Datchai Sounds like a beautiful fragrance and I would love to try it. It would be my first Maison Crivelli perfume. I live in Indiana.

  • I always enjoy reading Olya’s reviews. She is a very expressive writer and I can visualize the sounds and scents of the forest. The black tea, patchouli and cedar wood combined with the fruit sounds like a lovely walk through the woods. I’ve never tried anything from Maison Crivelli before. I’m in MD, USA.

  • I really enjoyed this review with beautiful description.
I love tea notes and with blackcurrant and sandalwood notes sounds beautiful.
Unfortunately, I am not familiar with Maison Crivelli perfumes.

  • What I enjoyed most about Olya’s review was the imagery that it called forth. It engaged multiple senses and transported me to the forest while I was just sitting here reading on my phone. Bois Datcha sounds like a fragrance I would love and I am so interested to try a tea fragrance with what sounds like serious heft. My favorite Maison Crivelli fragrance (so far) is Iris Malikhân. Thanks for the opportunity. I live in the Midwestern US.

  • Olya! ❤️ Wow! The pictures in this review are GORGEOUS and make me want to be immersed in these scenes, especially the smell! I love your stories of climbing trees and eating berries! ❤️ I grew up in an old forest (but mild climate) and have similar olfactive memories of carpets of pine, picking fresh berries, etc. These connections are deeply moving & Bois Datchai sounds so lovely! While I do not have a favorite Maison Crivelli scent yet, I predict that I will shortly! Thank you for this wonderful opportunity! ❤️ USA

  • Bryant Worley says:

I really appreciated the way Olya broke down the fragrance, making it seem perfect for the Winter we’re in right now. And, then, she described the drydown as ‘tender’ (“The soft tactility of leather in the base of Bois Datchai balanced with a sweet earthiness of patchouli oil lends a perfect tenderness during the last stages of the fragrance.”) I never heard a fragrance described as ‘tender’. So, is she trying to say that the fragrance will caress the skin, feeling like a blanket enveloping the wearer? Hmmmmm…..

I don’t have a favorite Maison Crivelli fragrance, but I really want to get my nose on Iris Malakhan and Rose Saltifolia. I live in Waldorf, Maryland, USA.

  • As an avowed tea lover, it was easy to capture my imagination just from the name of the fragrance and Olya’s description served to reinforce the notion that Bois Datchai would be a love-at-first-sniff for me. Great writing Olya 🙂 I’ve not yet tried any Maison Crivelli fragrances and would love to start with Bois Datchai. I’m in USA

  • The thing I liked most about Olya’s review was the line “…I am forever grateful for the olfactory works of art that allow me to go back in time with a spritz.” That’s something that I find fascinating about fragrances; how they are so strongly tied with memory. Those types of transportive and nostalgic fragrances are the best and I cherish the ones in my collection that do the same. In addition, Bois Datchaï has a downright mouthwatering note breakdown of some of my favorites (tea, cinnamon, black currant). As I’ve never smelled anything from Maison Crivelli I would love the opportunity to own this beauty. Thanks as always for the opportunity and cheers from Illinois!

  • This sounds great based on the review! Especially the sitting around the campfire telling old folk tales. I have never tried anything from this house before. Thanks for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • Olya’s description of this fragrance is gorgeous! The notes sound as if they blend together perfectly. I love the way that she evokes scent memories of a warm mug of black tea steeping in a cold forest. I really enjoy the contrast of bright berries and fruits with the deep woods and incense patchouli notes. What a perfect scent for the colder months! I do not have a current favorite Maison Crivelli fragrance and I am in the US.

  • I enjoyed the nostalgic vision Olya has described from her childhood. Growing up next to the forest, running free and playing at night- what a lucky child. The scent sounds very good with cedar, resins, blackberry and tea. I have the Maison Crivelli discovery set on my wishlist, but no favorite yet. Thank you for the draw.

  • msnitechemist says:

This sounds like the perfect scent with which to go forest bathing or rather, given our current circumstances, imagine that we are in a forest if we cannot go there. I crave to see the Scandinavian woods again, I went there on my last trip before all the lockdowns and this just sounds so incredibly evocative. I have taken a likely to blackcurrant in fragrances, it’s such an interesting note, and with tea and cinnamon, it sounds like the perfect winter fragrance. Thank you Olya for introducting this one to me. I have not had the opportunity to sample other Maison Crivellis and really wanted that gorgeous hibiscus one, too! Thanks for the draw, I am in the US.

  • whimsical diva says:

Absolutely loved the description of the forests and the opening of this perfume. Reminds me of my camping experiences when I used to live in the Pacific Northwest. I’d love to be entered in the draw. I live in California, USA.

  • Olya take on Maison Crivelli Bois Datchai reminded me of a private order I had last week at the bakery, for BlackBerry Pine Nut Cake , with Pine Honey… honeydew if you prefer. I imagined eating the cake, drinking tea while sitting right next to the Christmas tree I’m not familiar with Maison Crivelli, but Bois Datchai sounds great , thanks Olya
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign

  • The only two Maison Crivelli fragrances I know are Bois Datchaï , and Iris Malikhân.
Olya review is spot on , I can see the Russian connection myself.
Overall experience i get from it is traditional Russian Black Banya (Баня по-чëрмому)/Bath , bath broom (банньй веник) , and right after going out drinking samovar tea , and eating home made blueberry jam . When I smelled it ,that’s what came to mind.
I also agree with Olya about the sweetness, the fragrance is a lot sweeter on my skin, than I expected.
Like I said I also know Iris Malikhân , special and hard to describe iris fragrance. It both buttery , woody aromatic, earthy – leathery , with slight sweetness, and bitterness from the Mastic. The scent goes through a lot of phases , you never know what to expect.
Both are special in their own right, but i slightly prefer Bois Datchaï
    All profiles I already follow
    Thanks a lot

Gorgeous review Olya! What I enjoyed most about Olya’s review was her description of her memories of being a child and summers spent in her country home, exploring forests and running about, surrounded by raw nature, and how this fragrance transports her back into that time. When she said the fragrance made her crave a night around the fire telling legends and folk stories, magical and mythical, that really resonated with me.

I don’t yet have a favorite Maison Crivelli fragrance as I haven’t tried any yet, but from the descriptions I suspect it would be Osmanthe Kodoshan, with it’s leathery osmanthus, cistus/rock rose absolute, and meditative woody air. I live in the US.

  • Bois Datchai is a fragrance I’ll gladly wear all year round, especially in the gloomy mid December weather . I like how unusual , but also refined it is. Cedar , blackberries, incense and I black tea is such a stylish combination , I’m truly moved by Olya Bar review.
Never had a chance to try Maison Crivelli
    Thank you all

  • I’m a fan of Dorothee Piot , and especially Chambre Noire by Olfactive Studio , and Criminal of Love By Kilian, both i own. Her fragrances are often expressive and smooth, with high compliment factor.
The leather, patchouli and tea are staples, I also really like the addition of the juicy berries, I presume giving the fragrance some modern twist. Because of Dorothee Piot , and Olya review, my expectations for Bois Datchai are really …. really high right now.
I’m still new to Maison Crivelli fragrances
    Overly exciting giveaway , USA

This sounds so incredibly atmospheric. What a beautiful review! I haven’t heard of this house but now I want to go outside. Thanks for the draw, from the US.

  • I haven’t tried anything yet from Maison Crivelli, but I’d love to try their collected works- I’ve especially been wanting to try “Iris Malikhan”. Olya’s description of “Bois Datchai” makes this fragrance seem very enticing and enjoyable. I’m interested to see if this fragrance could make me feel like I’m up north. Also, judging by the list of notes for this fragrance, I believe that I would enjoy it- I love all of those notes. I live in MD., U.S.A. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity.

  • Olya took me to a distinct, and festive journey, thank you for the review, and the opportunity
Mysterious, fruity, green – and magically smoky , in Bois Datchai, the perfumer mingles crispy wild berries, tangy brambles , with smoky wood, tea, cedar, papyrus, patchouli and frankincense.
With Maison Crivelli , the beauty of original niche perfumery is still intact. Tomorrow I’ll order Hibiscus Mahajad and Bois Datchai samples.
Finished decorating the Christmas tree, and it’s time for a sip . Cheers with Earl Grey Blackberry Bourbon cocktail , with Blanton’s Single Barrel Bourbon , it even fits Bois Datchai theme 🙂

What I enjoyed most about Olya’s review of Bois Datchai is learning about her childhood spending her summers in the Russian Wilderness experiencing all the woody, earthy, aromatic, herbal, and berries. The way Olya described this one sounds magical. My favorite fragrance from Maison Crivelli is Iris Malikhan. I am from Ohio, USA.

You had me at “forest filled with pine trees.” I’m definitely a nature lover and love to smell earthy. That perceived note of blackberry has me intrigued. Thanks for the opportunity to sniff. New York USA
