Les Parfumeurs du Monde Androgyne 16020 Review (Isabelle Gellé) 2021 + Celebrating Amelia Earhart’s First Solo Flight Draw

Courage is the price that
Life exacts for granting peace.
The soul that knows it not, knows no release
From little things:
Knows not the livid loneliness of fear,
Nor Mountain heights where bitter joy can hear
The sound of wings. ~ Amelia Earhart, 1928

Les Parfumeurs du Monde Androgyne 16020 by Isabelle Gellé was recently listed among my top ten fragrances for 2021 – and considering that it arrived at the last moment (when one feels spent and unlikely to alter the assemblage), that speaks to how brilliant and memorable it is. Androgyne 16020 is deeply unsettling in a wonderful way: the French might call it bouleversant. I’ve shamelessly punned here and deliberately referred to it as bouleau-versant because its leather accord blazes with birch tar (bouleau translates as birch en français) as it sizzles and crackles like a smoldering flame.

On January 11, 1935, Amelia Earhart became the first person to fly solo from Hawaii to the U.S. mainland.  via Getty

American trailblazing aviatrix Amelia Earhart provided the perfumer with ample inspiration for her beautiful leather chypre. Heaven knows, it’s a genre with which I’m most joyfully familiar – and one which blooms for me in a tellingly seductive manner. I’ve amassed many (both vintage and contemporary) leather chypres over the past 5+ decades, and Les Parfumeurs du Monde Androgyne 16020 is proof positive that there is indeed room for yet one more. I’d make haste to mention that this fragrance also puts to rest the notion that natural perfumes possess poor longevity. It leaves little doubt that Androgyne 16020 is purely a powerhouse perfume for the bold of heart and spirit.  It may be eschewed by the more timorous amongst us – but no fragrance should be expected to be the Alpha and the Omega to all and sundry. Chacun à son goût.

Les Parfumeurs du Monde Androgyne 16020 opens scintillatingly: unexpected yuzu and mandarin hit you immediately, deftly sprinkled with cardamom. It’s an intoxicating moment, light-filled and carefree – a prelude to the raw, elegant intensity which follows. As one anticipates, violet serves as the floral note which adds a definite douceur (in leather fragrances one finds violet and/or iris, rose, jasmines, carnation, narcissus among those frequently pressed into service); over time it morphs into a serene presence which may go unnoticed as the potent aviator jacket accords take hold. The woody fruitiness of juniper berry is animated, piercingly verdant with a somewhat sweet and extremely tenacious drydown – balsamic and boozy. Birch tar is a potent material which evokes leather in perfumery, but it also may suggest hot engine oil as well. Androgyne 16020 intimates both those qualities, rounded gently by the grassy smokiness of vetiver and softly loamy patchouli.

Perfumer Isabelle Gellé

Perfumer Isabelle Gellé’s new perfume is adventurous, forthright and refined: it never seeks to sacrifice authenticity in an attempt to curry favor. As such, its immediacy and veracity are undeniable. You are on that solo flight  January 11, 1935 right alongside Amelia. You are enveloped in overwhelming exhilaration, a wild sense of freedom. Androgyne 16020 is absolutely fearless; a perfume which defies gender classification in its quest for truth and realism. Notes: cardamom, yuzu, mandarin, leather accord, violet, juniper berries, vetiver, patchouli, birch

  • I’m not familiar with Les Parfumeurs du Monde, but would love to try Androgyne 16020. I like that it sounds absolutely perfect for someone, like me, who appreciates unisex fragrances. I loved that Amelia Earhart inspired this perfume. Thanks for the opportunity. Mich USA

  • I have never tried any scents by Les Parfumeurs du Monde, but Androgyne 16020 sounds like an absolute dream; birch tar, yuzu, leather, and cardamom are all favorite notes of mine, and I am excited to smell them in a scent that Ida has described as light and carefree. I live in Ny, USA.

  • No, not familiar with Parfumeurs du Monde. What I feel after reading the review is I want this genderless leather/chypre for my own. US

  • I too enjoy the Amelia Earhart reference. I more specifically enjoy the notion of a leather chypre fragrance since I have been getting more I to this style recently. Leather can be hard to do for me but this one with birch, violet, and juniper sounds right up my alley. First heard about this house from your recent articles about them but have never tried them. Thanks for the draw in VA, USA.

  • I’m a fan of Amelia Earhart. Love how Ida used her in the review. Love unisex fragrances. The notes definitely sounds wonderful. Thank you for this Chance. USA

  • Longtime perfume reader and aficionada, first-time commenter. Leather has been a recurrent delightful theme in my perfume journey, and 16020 intrigues me. Also, weird tidbit: More than one person has said I remind them of Amelia. I doubt the resemblance, but maybe it’s a general feeling they get. Adventurous! (Or at this later stage, adventurous wannabe.)

  • Ida!!! ❤️ As always, how fantastic! Especially “bouleau-versant” – I love it! ❤️ Can I join you in the “leather chypre” club? Les Parfumeurs du Monde Androgyne 16020 sounds wonderful and a must-experience. The birch tar leather links this scent to a grand history of leathers (Chanel’s Cuir de Russie, etc.). I have been wanting to try Parfumeurs du Monde for some time (hearing great things about this house). Perhaps this is just the reason to get some first-hand experience! Thank you for the wonderful opportunity! USA ❤️

  • I feel emotionally connected to Androgyne 16020 even before trying it, or any others from Parfumeurs du Monde for that matter. Amelia Earhart has been one of my heroines since childhood. I have always admired her willingness to embrace adventure and defy stereotypes. It would be an honor to own a perfume inspired by her spirit. I live in Indiana.

  • This sounds delightfully vintage in its inspiration! I am really interested in old school leather chypres like Antaeus, La Nuit, Bandit etc. and I would love to try an all natural current interpretation of this genre. Amelia was an incredible woman and perfect representation of what this sounds like it’s going for. As a woman I strive to not be put in a box and told what I can and cannot do or wear. I’ve heard of this house only from this site and I am interested in exploring further. USA

The notes of the perfume and the description remind me of the asphalt from which kerosene evaporates and the fragrant heat of the interior of an airplane.
I’m not familiar with Les Parfumeurs du Monde, but would love to try Androgyne 16020.

  • Another great, great review from Ida! Lovely write-up about Amelia Earhart, as well as the perfume itself. I find the whole brand of Les Parfumeurs du Monde very interesting, as well as the concept behind the perfumes! I sadly haven’t smelled anything from the brand, due to limited availability in my country, but this one could be a winner for me – I love leather, or birch tar in my perfumes! And I love it A LOT! I live in Croatia, EU.

  • I feel that it’s a great review with lots of interesting details, I’m familiar with Parfumeurs du Monde, I live in Poland, EU.

Another fantastic review from Ida! And one that feels special to me somehow – I seem to be drawn to fragrances that push boundaries, defy stereotypes and go in new directions. Androgyne 16020 has notes I absolutely love and oozes unbreakable spirit and determination. I have not tried any Parfumeurs du Monde fragrances as of yet but would really love to get acquainted with Androgyne 16020. Thank you from the Republic of Ireland, EU

  • I had to look up “bouleversant”. If Amelia Earhart, leather chypre and androgyne hadn’t already piqued my interest, bouleversant would have! Thanks, Ida, for broadening my vocabulary. I have read about Parfumeurs du Monde, but never tried anything from this house. I am in the US

  • Fascinating review by Ida – the story and courage of Amelia Earhart always intrigued me. As well as the combination of leather and chypre.

I am not familiar with Parfumeurs Du Monde.

  • I like the review a lot, the fragrance sounds like something I would enjoy, because i love leather fragrances based on birch oil softened with violet/iris powder. The idea of woman-aviator also attracts me, very powerful image. Thank you for introducing with Parfumeurs de Monde, I would like to join the draw. EU

  • What a lovely way to celebrate this anniversary. I have heard of Les Parfumers du Monde, but have not yet tried their fragrances. Leather fragrances have a special place in my heart, although I haven’t worn any for a few months- this review reminded why I love them!

I haven’t worn them in several months, and this review reminded me why I love them! I haven’t commented in a long time, but your review inspired me to comment today. Thank you for the draw and the review. Writing from the EU.

  • Loved Ida’s review and the whole concept of this perfume. When I was younger, I wanted to be a pilot, but unluckily my vision is very poor. The fact that the perfumer worked with Amelia Earhart worked with perfumer is truly an achievement.
I am sure this perfume is just amazing and would love to try it. I haven’t tried anything from the house before, but i have heard marvels from it.
    I live in the U.S.

  • Really interesting concept! The notes sound interesting enough to spark the curiosity of anyone – vetiver, leather, violet, birch and cardamom. I feel like this is going to be a hit.
Thank you for the draw! Europe.

I am not familiar with this house but this sounds spectacular. I also love that this fragrance was inspired by Ms. Earhart. I have been leaning towards leather fragrances and also learning more about chypres and this sounds like such a lovely tribute to Ms. Earhart – leather and the suggestion of hot engine oil! I’d love to try this one! Thank you for the review and draw. From the US.

  • Great story of female bravery and determination such as Amelia Earhart’s is always a great inspiration for a perfume. And when the perfume is a modern chypre, one can be sure to love it t the first mell.

  • I am not familiar with this brand. The use of birch and leather definitely evokes a feeling of airplanes and adventurous women (Amelia Earhart) and men ready to embark on adventurous journeys. It’s good to know from Ida’s review of Les Parfumeurs du Monde Androgyne 16020 that it has good longevity while using natural ingredients. Thanks for the review and draw. From USA.

  • After having read from this review, I am truly interested in trying this fragrance. I can like leather fragrances, and this fragrance features other notes/ingredients which I know I like. Also, I’d like to try it because of how highly Ida thinks of it. I haven’t had a chance yet to try anything from this fragrance house, but I’d like to try their collected works. I live in the U.S.A. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity.

  • This is my first time learning about Les Parfumeurs du Monde. I’m a big cardamom fan and combined with that fruit in the opening, this one sounds great. I am from New England, USA

  • I always appreciate an Amelia Earhart reference. She’s a touchstone for non-traditional feminism. Androgynous is a good description. Not surprisingly Androgyne 16020 is light on the florals and heavy on the spice, vetiver and leather. I appreciate the yuzu and mandarin opening. It sounds like it would add a bit of zest to the composition. I’ve not tried any Les Parfumeurs du Monde. MD, USA.

  • Amelia has intrigued me since I was a little girl. She was a fascinating woman. I have followed the theories of where her and Fred Noonan have ended up. This is an exciting muse for a perfume. In maryland.

  • Wow! Ida’s description of yuzu, mandarin and violet with a balsamic dry down sounds great!
    Thanks for a grand review.

How funny, today I am reading this wonderful review by Ida and I am wearing Ujan by Parfumeurs du Monde! It’s the only fragrance I know from the house (part of Sarah Colton’s Jovoy box) and I agree with Ida about longevity: I have a problem with it as my skin eats perfumes and I am always weary about natural perfumes and oils, but it is true that Parfumeurs du Monde stays on the skin quite a bit. Androgyne 16020 has almost all the notes I love: yuzu and cardamom, violet and leather, let alone patchouli! I would definitely love to try this scent, it really sounds amazing and evocative. Greetings from Italy

  • Another perfume with great story behind it. I like how Ida described all the notes. I’m not the biggest fan of leather but combination with cardamom and juniper berries sounds interesting. I’ve heard about Les Parfumeurs du Monde but unfortunately I didn’t have opportunity to test any of it. Maybe this draw will change it. I live in Poland, EU.

  • maybe Amelia herself would’ve worn a fragrance as bold and captivating as Ida’s review makes it sound.
I love the smell of leather jackets, although it is greatly improved by perfume – Androgyne 16020 sounds like it doesn’t need anything else, not even the actual leather jacket 🙂
sadly, not familiar with Parfumeurs du Monde fragrances.
    I am living in EU.

  • Thanks for this lovely article Ida!

I really like your writing because it often leads me down a rabbit hole where I find myself reading article after article about Amelia Earhart and old aviation stories. Incredible lady and an incredible achievement.

I have not tried any fragrances from Parfumeurs du Monde yet, but look forward to trying out their offering.

    Greetings from the UK!

  • Ah this hits close to home born and raised in Honolulu what a great review and reference.

Amelia felt that great feel of freedom wherever she flew especially the Transpacific flight from here to California where the flight went perfectly. She had done so many of those flights and was a subject of a couple of my history classes growing up and til this day thru my kids here on the islands. Prior to the famous flight she would meet with our Hawaii ambassador Duke Kahanamoku and shown the Aloha spirit.

  • Michael Prince says:

I enjoyed Ida’s review of Les Parfumeurs du Monde Androgyne 16020. An all natural perfume that possesses very impressive performance and longevity. A smokey birch tar, leather, spicy cardamom, along with vetiver and patchouli give this fragrance an awe inspiring story as good as Amelia Earharr in her voyage to become the first person to fly solo from Hawaii to Mainland USA on January 11, 1935. I’ve heard of Parfumeurs De Monde, but I haven’t tried anything from them. I am from the USA.

  • Ida, thank you for the review. You make Androgyne 16020 sound like an exciting adventure! I find I learn so much here, not only about fragrance but about history and the culture as your reviews often serve as a jumping off point to read more. I’d love to try this! USA

Thanks for the great review, Ida.

I love how much praise you give Androgyne in this review. The name is so beautiful and fitting with the theme of a leather chypre – a style that I think is androgynous. It’s amazing to see the longetivity of a scent with naturals.

I also how your review associates the leather in this scent with aviation and the brave Amelia Earhart. Some of my favourite leather smells are associated with travel.

I’ve not had a chance to smell anything from this house before – sometehing I need to correct.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • I, too, love a good leather chypre and am always craving more of them. This one sounds like quite a ride. I like the idea of something being “bouleversant”… I’ve read about Parfumeurs du Monde before, but haven’t had the pleasure of trying any of their scents. (USA)

Really nice review Ida! I feel really inspired reading Ida’s review and learning that the fragrance is inspired by the revolutionary Amelia Earhart , and that the perfumer translated that trailblazing force with unexpected notes of yuzu and mandarin and the elegant intensity of a leather chypre – the perfect embodiment of a mix of feminine and masculine, beautiful and strong.

I am not yet familiar with Parfumeurs du Monde so after reading this article I will make a point to try them, particularly Androgyne! I live in the US.
