Le Jardin Retrouvé Oriental Sans Souci Review (Yuri Gutsatz 1963 and restored by Maxence Moutte) + “Team Black” Limited Edition Review

Le Jardin Retrouve Oriental Sans Souci perfume review

Clara Feder’s artistic interpretation of Le Jardin Retrouvé Oriental Sans Souci

“The echo of your steps reverberates sounds of the past, recalling intimate memories, filled with an addictive sweetness” -a note from the brand

Le Jardin Retrouvé Oriental Sans Souci was brought back to life in a unique manner, not seen before in the fragrant firmament. It captured hearts and noses before it was even put back into production. Like all the best people we know, it has a sensational back story.

Yuri Gutsatz is the father of Michel Gutsatz

A young Yuri Gutsatz in 1941

Le Jardin Retrouvé is a small family house that was reawakened in 2016, eleven years after its founder, perfumer Yuri Gutsatz passed away. His legacy was hundreds, if not thousands of meticulously kept formulas: a fascinating legacy when you realise that his perfumery career spanned nearly six tumultuous decades.

Yuri’s Le Jardin Retrouvé perfume formulas

In life, Yuri had been a devoted husband and father of three. By 2016, only one son remained, Michel Gutsatz. Michel was a university professor married to artist Clara Feder. Neither were professionally involved in the perfume industry, but both shared a passion for keeping this unique legacy alive. Le Jardin Retrouvé was revived in 2016 with a curated selection of seven classic French fragrances. But what to do with the thousands of unmade formulas in the archives?

Yuri had never skimped on ingredients and Michel and Clara used many of the same suppliers that Yuri had. The cost of making them all up was unthinkable, so an idea formed. Let the people vote. Four samples were gathered, identified only by a dot. No names were given, no ingredients, no notes. This sample quadrant was sent to perfume lovers around the world. Everyone had one vote. The winner was clear. Polling 48% of the total vote, Team Black Dot enjoyed a landside and Oriental Sans Souci was born.

Sans Souci Gardens

Jardin Retrouvé Oriental Sans Souci was named after the Sans Souci gardens in Potsdam, Germany. The house ethos is that Le Jardin Retrouvé (the garden refound) leads you to the childhood garden sanctuary we all have within us; thus each fragrance is named after a garden. So what does this vote winner smell like and why did so many fall in love with it ? To my nose, Oriental Sans Souci is a winding path that starts with a garden of flowers and leads you into darker territory. It has a fantasy quality behind it. It reminds me of my childhood when we played in the neighbouring woods and dared ourselves to go deeper, as our hearts raced thrillingly.

Secret Gardens

Still from the movie The Secret Garden 1993

You’ll begin your garden journey with jasmine and neroli. As you enter under an archway of flowers into a darker arboretum, woods and earthy patchouli greet you, adding a robust and not-quite-spicy accord. This forest is a welcoming sanctuary of birdsong. Warm amber embraces you and the comfort of mouth-watering vanilla and tonka bean add a cloak of warmth. The bright citrus notes dart through like shafts of welcome sunlight, fusing the sharp with the soft in perfect harmony, like the sparkle of dew drops on moss.

Oriental Sans Souci has a vintage feel which is no accident. The formula was written in the 60s and was strictly adhered when it was constructed in 2016 by in-house perfumer Maxence Moutte, a fan of Yuri’s legacy long before he worked for the family.  In this case, there was no original bottle to refer to: Oriental Sans Souci had never been produced before. Had Michel and Clara not rifled though pages of archives, it might never have seen the light of day. Perfume lovers around the world are glad that it did.

Disclosure: Thank you to Le Jardin Retrouvé for my review sample. I have a working relationship with this house, but even so, opinions are my own.

Notes: jasmine, neroli, bergamot, woody notes, amber, resins,  vanilla, tonka bean, patchouli

  • Thanks Ms Samantha for introducing me to another great brand. Interesting that this perfume was created from a formula from the 60’s. I liked the “darker aboretum” description of Sans Souci. This is a fantastic draw! Thank you! Mich USA

  • I love the introductiooon! The prices of fragrance production is so complex. I feel that I can’t even imagine how much patience love and knowledge one needs to produce an amazing perfume. I really like the notes and the bottle of Le Jardin Retrouvé Oriental Sans Souci. I would really love the chance to try it. It is so great that they tried understand the recopy and make this perfume come to life! I’m from Illinois, US.

  • What a beautiful story. I’m sure Yuri would have loved to know that the legacy of his perfumes live on through the efforts of his son and daughter-in-law. And how clever of them to determine this fragrance by a blind vote! Samantha’s description of Oriental Sans Souci is lovely, she did a beautiful job of bringing back memories of my own childhood adventures in nature. I live in Oregon/USA, and thank you for the generous draw.

  • I loved Samantha’s detailed account of the creation of this beautiful fragrance. I absolutely agree with her description of its “fantasy quality”. I had also participated in the House’s blind testing/selection process, and Oriental Sans Souci was my own first choice. I’d be ecstatic to win a bottle, thank you!
    Best from France (EU).

  • So lovely bottle! I’m not familiar with the brand, but I very enjoyed the review. I love the notes as well. Thank you for the chance. I live in Europe.

  • What an interesting backstory. Great fragrances are timeless as evidenced by so many choosing a perfume formula that was composed over 50 years ago. The notes sound like a stroll through an enchanted forest. Commenting from MD, USA.

  • I loved the beautiful imagery created by Samantha in her review of Le Jardin Retrouvé Oriental Sans Souci, walking into a refound garden with flowers, then into the adventure of a dark forested arboretum. Lovely. Haven’t tried anything by Le Jardin Retrouvé, yet. Because it was voted blind by many people, it is likely a lovely perfume that I’d love to try. I like the idea of reviving old formulas, when the art of perfumery, as almost all else, was practiced without distractions and with focus and passion. Thanks for the review and the draw. Writing from the USA.

Hello, please enter me in the giveaway! I live in Florida in the USA. What I love about Samantha’s review is the history and back story of the family and how this fragrance came to be! It’s incredible that the perfumer’s career spanned over 60 years so I can only imagine how many notes and files he had over the years, then to bring his ideas to life decades later by sending out the samples with the dots and doing a blind voting, it’s an amazing story and idea. Then on to the fragrance itself, I love how each one is named after a garden and this one opens with a garden of florals and ten takes a darker path. I love how the woods and patchouli come in followed by the amber and Tonka bean. Makes this sound like just a stunner of a fragrance and one that has a lot of depth and character from her description. I do not have a favorite from the house yet because I do not own any as of yet but I hope I get the opportunity to own this one, and I’m sure it will become my favorite! Sounds amazing! Thanks again!

  • This is intriguing. The formula of Oriental Sans Souci was written more than half a century ago, never converted into perfume before until now, and it has vintage feel. As someone who collects lot of vintage perfumes, I am curious. thanks for the draw. US

  • I am very interested in trying this product, and winning this giveaway. I enjoyed this review because I think that it’s interesting that people will get to see what some of Yuri Gutsatz’s unmade perfumes are like. I believe that Yuri’s perfume formula catalog could be of a lot help to someone who wants to learn a lot about perfume making. I wonder if this fragrance is like walking in a garden. I wish that I had tried a fragrance from Le Jardin Retrouvé fragrances, but I never have. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • Thank you Samantha. I liked the idea of a blind vote from perfume lovers and would be quite interested to smell Oriental Sans Souci that was blindly picked by almost half of all participants. That walk in the garden sounds amazing. I’m in USA

  • Daniel Fisher says:

If only there were some compass with which to navigate Yuri’s fragrant compendium! A treasure trove, a dragon’s hoard, a beloved legacy, forgotten seeds now sown, a fresh bloom, this carefree oriental. How special it must be to have won the hearts of so many, leaping through time to be born again, reincarnated in our lifetime.

Thank you Samantha for your lovely review. It sounds perfect. I love the vintage ambience —lovely florals, rich resins, and golden hues, a vision from the golden age of perfumery. And thank you for introducing me to a new perfume house I’ve never before encountered!

  • What an exciting back story. I enjoyed it a lot. This is the first time hearing this house. Looking forward to seeing them more. (US)2

  • I really enjoyed from the review the finding an unmade perfume and making it and showing it to the public and to perfume lovers. I also really liked the process of finding which one to make by sending the samples all around the world and letting everyone vote. I think that is such a cool idea but what a shame we will never be able to try or buy the others. I’ve never tried a Le Jarden Retrouvé fragrance before so I do not have a favorite unfortunately but I would love to win this one! Amber fragrances are my favorite! I live in Florida, US.

  • I think the story behind this house is amazing! It’s wonderful that the legacy is being kept alive. I also love the idea that they sent the four samples just with colored dots to decide which to produce from the thousands of formulas. From Samantha’s review this line stuck with me most, “It has a fantasy quality behind it. It reminds me of my childhood when we played in the neighbouring woods and dared ourselves to go deeper, as our hearts raced thrillingly.” I can relate to it, the notes and her description of the scent also sound wonderful to me. Ive not tried any scents from Le Jardin Retrouvé but would love to. Thanks from CT USA for the generous draw.

  • I like how the formula was composed and thought in the 60s and put into a bottle many years later. It’s like a time capsule.
Thank you for the draw! Europe

  • Yuri Gutsatz was ahead of his time and an artist who endlessly created as his sole reason for existing, commited in heart and soul to the alcheia of perfumery: a private garden like Monet’ s Giverny with a palette of colors and poetical dreams, invisible to our eyes but palpable to our nose and imagination.
Oriental Sans Souci was born as never another perfume was created and and the scent pyramid looks very interesting and appealing to me.
The Yuri Gutsatz archives are colosal and it will take hundreds of tears to fully understand and explore the fragrances he had in mind. I hope the brand in the nearest future will become a ”Cornerstone” of modern perfumery.
Samanthas article is objective and ”Parnassian”, I really enjoyed reading your article,Thank you.
I am not familiar with Le Jardin Retrouvé fragrances but I know the brand. Thank you from Ireland. EU.

  • This sounds wonderful. I loved the story in Samantha’ s review about choosing to try and use the original suppliers to truly recreate the perfume. I’ve not tried any of le jardin retrouve’s scents, but definitely intend to. I’m based in the UK.

  • Thank you for your draw.
I liked to read it, never heard from this house before.
The process, the creation it’s made with love isn’t it?
Would love to get an impression by my own
    I am from Germany.
    Greetings

  • I took part in the sniffa and chose the red dot one after weeks of trying to decide red? Or black? Both exquisite and beautifully done. I love Samantha’s review because she tells a simple story about real people who discovered a family heirloom recipe book and decided to share its delights with those lucky enough to hear. I have put several on my Christmas list, Tubereuse Trianon, cuir de Russie. I’m from US.

  • “Childhood garden sanctuary we all have within us” this triggers some deep sensations in me. I would love to try Oriental Sans Souci and use it as an olfactory filter for my inner childhood garden.
I haven’t tried any Le Jardin Retrouvé yet. I live in Romania.

  • What a rare treat! I enjoyed the likening of this fragrance to adventures of youth, exploring and putting oneself into the unknown. The notes of this south perfect, a jasmine/neroli combo that has a deep dark base… love it! I have not tried anything from this house yet, but would love to. I am from Canada.

  • My friend, Aaron Potterman (Stewart..spelling?) sent me here. Very interesting read. What a magnificent man and fragrance!

  • I found the comparison of this perfume to the thrill one feels while venturing into the forest as a child to be very inspiring. Indeed, the combination and evolution of the notes, from citrusy flowers to woodiness, to amber, evokes that image quite well.
I would love to try Sans souci by Le Jardin retrouvé, because I have never experienced this house before.
Thanks for the draw! Living in the EU.

  • I absolutely love the story and complexity of this fragrance. My favourite part was by far the introduction, but I do love the detailed description of how the fragrance smells. I am a huge fan of florals and I would love to smell this fragrance. Kind regards from Illinois, USA.

  • I like such brands with a history, I like Samantha’s review because it tells in detail about the history of the brand. I think it is very important to rework vintage compositions so that they sound relevant in our time, and it seems that Le Jardin Retrouvé has succeeded.
    I’m from Wisbech, UK

  • Fortunately, I’ve had the pleasure to discover this fragrance in the Parisian boutique and it is absolutely phenomenal!! With a vintage, it is a beautiful, warm and intoxicating Oriental perfume. That is my absolute favorite from this house!
I enjoyed reading about how this house came back to life and the scent description from Samantha Scriven.
Many thanks for this draw. I live in Paris.

Samantha’s beautiful poetic review prompted me to think that in fact, everything is ingeniously invented a long time ago, it remains only to adapt it to our life. Unfortunately, I am not familiar with this brand, however, it would be interesting for me to try. Most of all, I admire the thoroughness of the review by Samantha.
    UK based.

  • Thanks Samantha for this great review! What an inspirational piece of work, I would really love to try this. Love the jasmine and the amber complemented by hints of citrus. Living in the EU

Interesting that this perfume was created from a formula from the 60’s.
This lovely garden with white vanilla flowers is my dream.

  • Aletha Williams says:

I love this article because Oriental Sand Souci is my favorite fragrance. When I first smelled the fragrance I immediately thought of a evening out on the town wearing a black dress, very much Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. As Samantha so eloquently wrote, this is a fragrance that invites you to go deeper and discover all its subtleties!

  • What a lovely story, thank you for introducing this house. I didn’t know Le Jardin Retrouvé until reading this article. I love this vintage looking perfume bottle and it has some of my favorite notes – neroli, jasmine and vanilla. By reading this article, makes me really want to try this perfume. Who doesn’t want to be a garden journey with neroli and jasmine? 🙂 Many thanks to Samantha from New York, USA.

  • Bryant Worley says:

Thank you Samantha for the back story of the brand/fragrance. It is always nice to get the background and inspiration of fragrances. I especially appreciated hearing about the voting process of perfume lovers (Let the people Speak!) used. And then the breakdown of how the fragrance develops. Wonderful!

I don’t have a favorite Le Jardin Retrouvé, as today was the first time I’ve heard about this house.

I live in Waldorf, MD, USA.

  • Thank you for the review and introducing Le Jardin Retrouvé history. It’s fascinating to see how Maxence Moutte adapted old formulas to the IRFA standard.

I don’t have a favourite Le Jardin Retrouvé perfume.

    Greetings from Switzerland.

  • A son decided to maintain the legacy of his father and bring his creations from the archives back to life; this aspect only is enough to intrigue me about this new but vintage perfume. But Michel and Clara decided to make one more bold step and let people chose their favorite out of four. I don’t know about you, but for me this is one of the best back stories I have read in this blog!
As for the notes, fusing the sharp with the soft in perfect harmony, sounds great, and this must be the reason that this perfume gathered the majority of the votes. Thank you for the opportunity to try this creation with this unique story. Greetings from Athens, Greece.

  • Linzi plant says:

Wow this sounds amazing, the notes are my mother’s favourites all in one place so I would love to share this with her, what a fabulous review and beautiful imagery and description. I’m in the UK, thank you 🙂

  • Linzi plant says:

Sorry, I forgot to say I don’t yet have a favourite scent from this house as I haven’t been fortunate enough to try it yet – fingers crossed 🙂

  • The Plum Girl says:

    What a great review, Samantha!
Oriental Sans Souci is a lovely fragrance indeed, and Maxence did a great job. The whole story behind LJR fragrances is so niche. I was Team Red, but would love to have the Black Dot as well. EU based.

  • Danu Seith-Fyr says:

This was a fabulous read, thank you Samantha. For me this is intriguing because it is a resurrection, deeply cherished bringing the legacy of Yuri alive again, infused with new light. The writing which bought us into the cherished secret and hidden places both external and internal, ah the Secret Garden, what a treasure it is, so deeply personal and a sanctuary. Cuir du Russie is a favourite. I reside in deep France.

  • This is quite unique – letting ‘perfume lovers’ to pick the winning formula, not some market poll that designer houses and some niche houses do.
I find Samantha’s impression of the perfume leading someone into a darker territory of the arboretum quite fascinating. And she did mention moss – please let it be some oakmoss! Consider me very interested in Oriental Sans Souci. Thanks for the opportunity (UK)

  • Michael Prince says:

Samantha, great review on the late perfumer Yuri Gutsatz and the history and story behind the fragrance house Le Jardin Retrouvé. I am glad his family was able to find Yuri old formulas and recreate some of the fragrances. Oriental Sans Souci sounds like an amazing fragrance with classic stylings and high quality ingredients. I don’t have a favorite from the house because I haven’t tried any of their fragrances. I am from the USA.

  • wallygator88 says:

Thank you for the lovely article Samantha.

I really loved this story of the revival of a families fortunes, of old recipes recreated for the first time. I am especially a fan of polling these fragranecs beased on the olfactive experience alone – clearl 48% want to be a part of this journey and experience this fantast in the same way as Samantha.

I definitely want to be part of that 48%

I’ve unfortunately never smelt this house before.

Wonderful description, and for me an introduction, of Le Jardin Retrouvé! I’d not hear of this house before. It was so nice to learn the background of the family business. The notes of this fragrance sound beautiful. Thank you. Located in US.

  • I love the stunning word picture of the perfume gardens. This is a new brand to me, but I would love to try it.
    Many thanks from the UK

  • I really like the revival story. I think Yuri’ son had a really good idea by voting the scent to be produced. I wonder if they would consider doing this further on. The voted scent sounds reminescent to old-school fragrances. The names for perfumes are wisely chosen, in my opinion. Given the fact that we cannot travel at the moment to see the beautiful gardens that inspired the perfumer, we just have to settle with olfactory travel.

  • Very cool story behind this house! I hope that they continue to find ways to honor the work of their founder and explore the unmade formulations they inherited. Thank you for sharing the story and for giving us a chance at such a special creation! I’ve never tried this house but I love that they did their testing with fragrance lovers instead of the usual methods that end with yet another sugary fruitchouli snoozefest. I really enjoyed this article & thank you for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • What a fascinating story, lovely to hear the history of the brand. I hope they will be able to try more of the formulae in future. I’m not sure which is my favourite fragrance yet, although I do have some samples. I live in Birmingham, U.K.

  • I really enjoyed the aspect of letting perfume lovers choose which perfume gets made. I love the concept of this and would love to see more of this implemented. The notes in this perfume must be wonderful and I am hoping to make this one my favorite from the house. I live in Florida, US.
