L’Artisan Parfumeur Couleur Vanille Review (Aliénor Massenet)+ Oceanic Vanilla Draw

L'Artisan Parfumeur Couleur Vanille review

L’Artisan Parfumeur’s collections have been missing a vanilla-dominant fragrance ever since the discontinuation of the luscious, rum/tobacco-infused Havana Vanille (composed by Bertrand Duchaufour in 2009, and later renamed Vanille Absolument), which had itself replaced the charming – and rather ahead of its time – Vanilia (created in 1978 by the brand’s founder, Jean-François Laporte). Filling that gap, the historic French Perfume House has just released L’Artisan Parfumeur Couleur Vanille – a modern, airy, widely pleasing vanilla-centered scent, embellished with salty, ozonic and aquatic touches.

Senior perfumer Aliénor Massenet (whose work includes all the fragrances of Memo Paris) built her composition upon, and around, Symrise’s beautiful, sustainably produced Madagascar vanilla, utilising both the absolute, and the extract. Mme Massenet imagined L’Artisan Parfumeur Couleur Vanille as an olfactory journey to the Indian Ocean and the exotic island country of Madagascar, where this exquisite raw material is being cultivated; leafing through an atlas, like an adventure novel, she visualized “a subtle union between the sensuality and warmth of vanilla, and a trade-wind breeze”. In the perfumer’s own words: “The images just started to take shape. I could smell the aroma of a Vanilla pod, subtly bathed in Bergamot, Everlasting, Benzoin and Tolu Balm, gently caressed by a salty breeze. The whole story was there for the taking… “

From the moment L’Artisan Parfumeur Couleur Vanille touches the skin, the Madagascar vanilla declares her starring presence bathed in the radiant juiciness of bergamot, accented by discreet floral touches of freesia, and infused with a distinctive, skillfully executed, fleur de sel accord (named after the famed, supreme-quality sea salt). A true catalyst of the composition, this accord provides a pleasing salty contrast to the rich, caramelised vanilla – proving that, just like in fine pâtisserie, a touch of salt can enhance the aromatic experience, while moderating any excessive sweetness. This iodine accord generates a fluid, subtle aquatic aura, that runs through the fragrance like a crisp, invigorating oceanic breeze. This intriguing effect is further supported by the mineral undertones of the emerging immortelle, which enriches the fragrance’s heart with its unique, sweet hay-like floralcy and solar warmth. After an hour on my skin, this effect progressively subsides (although never completely disappears), allowing vanilla to get tinted in deeper, darker hues; dulcet-toned balsams, resins and woods color the star ingredient amber, while the fragrance feels warmer, smokier and increasingly sensual without giving up its ethereal character (the latter amplified by fluffy musks). The gentle drydown is mainly a vanilla, benzoin and musk affair, with the salty undertones sustaining an olfactory sensation of sun-kissed skin.

Balancing between fresh, gourmand and light amber, L’Artisan Parfumeur Couleur Vanille offers an enjoyable contrast of the familiar, extroverted sensuality of vanilla, with the less obvious, yet raw and instinctual, seductive appeal of salt. This cosy, playful, light-hearted “oceanic vanilla” is eager, and able, to please a wide variety of tastes and cravings, even of those who tend to shy away from its main ingredient.

Notes: Bergamot, Salt Flower, Freesia; Immortelle, Orchid, Cashmere Wood; Vanilla “Extra”, Tolu Balm, Benjoin, Musk.

Disclaimer: I’d like to thank L’Artisan Parfumeur for my bottle of Couleur Vanille. The opinions are my own.

  • Not gonna lie, their packaging makes me want to try all their fragrances, but as a gourmand lover I would never say no to a vanilla fragrance! I like the imagery of the Indian ocean and the beach and vanilla. USA

  • Despina, your review is making me crave this interesting vanilla combo! Vanilla is a note I sometimes avoid, but it seems that the contrast here saves the scent. Sounds nice for summertime too. So far my top L’A is Amour Nocturne. It also has a nice sharp-sweet contrast. I am in the US!

  • wagnerflo says:

Fresh and gourmand made me listen up. And I do really like Vanilla in perfumes and otherwise. So this one could me my thing. I’ve tried a few from L’Artisan Parfumeur and rather liked Séville à l’Aube. Please enter me in the draw. I’m from Germany.

  • Salty vanilla sounds perfect. I have a decant of Havane Vanille and this sounds very different

  • I’m interested in the salty/vanilla combination of notes. I’ve been a fan of L’Artisan Parfumeur fragrances for years and this sounds like another great release. Thanks for another wonderful draw! Mich USA

  • “Balancing between fresh, gourmand and light amber, L’Artisan Parfumeur Couleur Vanille offers an enjoyable contrast of the familiar, extroverted sensuality of vanilla” this is right up my alley my favorite fragrances have vanilla in them Ani, Grand Soir, Oud Satin Mood, Psychedelique, Beast Mode, Wicked Good and Ambre 114. I think Vanilla is my favorite one of my favorite releases from last year was Vanilla Vibes.

  • Shelly wolf says:

I loved the Havana Vanille but gave it to my mother as she liked it. Would love one with a salt, ocean note as I love the ocean even more. I find l’artisan has so many wearable to work scents that I have hopes for this one.

  • I enjoyed Despina’s evocative words (and images too) combining salty/marine with the vanillic, which made this fragrance more appealing than I could imagine it to be from just ”vanilla”.

My favourite L’Artisan Parfumeur fragrance is probably Safran Troublant, though Timbuktu is pretty timeless and very special too.

    I live in the UK.

  • I love the memories this description evokes. When I was a kid, my family would go to San Diego often. At the Sea Port Village, there was an ice cream shop that had the most beautiful Vanilla aroma. This is what I imagine after reading this description.

I haven’t tried anything from L’Artisan Parfumeur yet, but this sounds exciting! Writing from the USA.

  • In my limited experience, vanilla (and praline) in a fragrance (Swiss Arabian Shaghaf Oud) had created a very sweet, candy type experience, which wasn’t very pleasant. I’d love to try Couleur Vanille as it seems different, with earthy benzoin and musk hopefully providing a good balance to vanilla. The imagery of sea breezes, salt and iodine in a perfume is intriguing. Maybe my opinion of vanilla as a candy crush (or rush) will change. Thanks for the draw – writing from USA.

  • Despina’s review of Coleur Vanille was quite intriguing. Bergamot, Salt Flower, Freesia; Immortelle, Orchid, Cashmere Wood; Vanilla “Extra”, Tolu Balm, Benjoin, Musk sounds like a warm, beautiful embrace. I’ve never tried anything from this house before but I’d love to. Thanks for the great review and the great. Commenting from Kentucky USA.

Great review really like the way this one was described vanilla with crisp, invigorating oceanic breeze sounds very interesting. I dont think I have tried anything similar to this would love to try it. I have not tried anything from this house. From USA

  • Trinity33 says:

I love how Despina describes the evolution of the fragrance on her skin. I love vanilla based perfumes but don’t think I’ve ever encountered an aquatic vanilla. It makes sense because Madagascar is an island nation. Favorite L’Artisan is Passage d’Enfer. I’m from MD, USA.

  • chiaravirga says:

    Great review!
This salty/vanilla fragrance looks amazing! Recently I’ve entered in a vanilla fase, everything that has vanilla in the notes I must try! I’ve never tried an “oceanic vanilla”, it would be lovely to smell this imagining being on the beach in Madagascar.
I haven’t tried that many fragrances from L’Artisan, but last month I fell in love with Traversée du Bosphore!
    I’m from Italy!

  • BostonScentGuy says:

Despina made this sound like a glorious, well balanced, and versatile scent that transcends categories as part fresh, part gourmand, etc. I love any mention of sun-warmed skin as well! I love many a L’Artisan, from Timbuktu to Ete en Douce. They do “transparent but intriguing and substantial ” so well! Thanks for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • ‘allowing vanilla to get tinted in deeper, darker hues; dulcet-toned balsams, resins and woods color the star ingredient amber, while the fragrance feels warmer, smokier and increasingly sensual without giving up its ethereal character’ this description by Despina captured my heart and my soul I am intrigued by the notes especially Cashmere Wood; Vanilla “Extra”, Tolu Balm, Benjoin, Musk. I have not tried anything by l artisan parfumeur or Aliénor Massenet but I hope that will change sooner rather than later. Thanks a million from United Kingdom

  • citizenkage says:

I love the picture of the ice cream cones on the beach. That’s kind of representative of my life. I live on the beach in West Palm Beach, Fl and there’s a little ice cream shack right on the beach. Every weekend me and my family go swimming and grab some ice cream cones and just relax on the beach. If I could capture that feeling in a fragrance I’d be eternally grateful and happy! I love L’Artisan Parfumeur, I’ve tried many of their fragrances with my favorite being Timbuktu. Thanks for the opportunity, FL, USA.

  • The notes of Bergamot, Salt Flower, Freesia; Immortelle, Orchid, Cashmere Wood; Vanilla “Extra”, Tolu Balm, Benjoin, Musk fascinated me and a wonderful description by Despina and Aliénor Massenet have captured my heart. I don’t have experience with this house or perfumer. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • i enjoyed the images that Despina conjured in her review, and am trying to imagine what the scent would do on skin. I love salty-sweet desserts, so i think i would enjoy this scent as well. Seville a l’Aube is my favorite from this house. USA.

  • Lovely review. The description of an iodine accord that adds an oceanic dimension to the vanilla frame sounds very intriguing. Also great pick with the photo of vanilla ice creams cones by the beach. Regards from the USA.

  • roxhas1cat says:

Seems to be on the “edge” of gourmands. I like that it doesn’t have any coconut, but maybe a bit beachy. Love the photos, makes me excited for winter to end. I’d love to win this. My favorites from this line is Bois Farine, Traversee du Bosphore and Tea for Two. Thanks Despina. USA.

  • diegopineda says:

Love this review, it sounded like Despina’s was enjoying writing this. I got really captured by this review, but for some reason while reading this I imagined salted caramel ice cream so I believe thats what it will smell like. I’m very excited for this new release.

    I’m in Georgia, USA.

  • Camille Sheil says:

Wow! This sounds absolutely amazing! I make my own vanilla extract for cooking so am familiar with the strong smell of vanilla on my hands! It has such a rich and complex flavor/scent that is intriguing. Adding this to salt sounds over the top! It’s like a vacation in a bottle! Haha It would be an honor if I were to win this! I like fragrances that flirt and flit through several genre categories. And this sounds like such a fragrance! I don’t have a favorite fragrance from L’Artisan Perfumeur because I have never smelled any of their other scents. I live in the USA, New Hampshire.

  • Because Madagascar is a place that has always been on my bucket list…and vanilla has always been a favorite. I want this!
Yes, I love leafing through an atlas. Yes, I like an adventure novel but more than that, I’d like “a subtle union between the sensuality and warmth of vanilla, and a trade-wind breeze”.
The beaches of the world are my attraction. You never have to guess where I want to vacation; it always involves sand, waves and sun with exotic plants. USA

  • It’s not a good thing for my diet reading this review!
I love and interesting take on vanilla since its a very common ingredient, so it added to my curiosity as to how they would achieve this.

My favourite from the house is al oudh.

    From Ireland, EU.

  • I like how you remind us that vanilla may have connotations of being bland it truly is one of the more rare and coveted items in the culinary world and the world in general. Amazing how something so unique became so ubiquitous. I’m not familiar with the house and live in NYC

  • blombergskan says:

I like the eau Despina describes the contrasts in the fragrance. Sounds really, really interesting! I’m a fan of Havana Vanille and Safran Troublant. Can’t wait to try this one! Living in Sweden.

  • I really like how it is mentioned that the perfume is balanced between fresh, gourmand, and light amber plus the oceanic vibe it has. It sounds really pleasant. I also enjoyed how the perfumer envisioned the scent like a trip to Madagascar basically. I have not yet tried any L’Artisan fragrances. I live in the U.S. Thanks so much for the generous draw.

  • As I’m big fan of all vanilla fragrances, just love the way it produces around, honestly I’m not familiar with this house but definitely would love to try it
    I’m from Europe

  • Coconu Monica says:

I liked the vividness of the description, I could almost sense the perfume changing on my skin. I don’t have a favourite but this house has inexplicable appeal for me and I’ve recently blindly bought one of their bottles… I live in Bucharest, Europe.

  • Imagine sitting by the ocean and enjoying a fresh breeze with all the fruits and spices nearby. You could enjoy every cocktail and every meal, orchids growing everywhere and vanilla in abundance. Would love to try this. Living in the EU

  • Valentina says:

I am glad that someone thinks that vanilla has an extroverted sensuality, because this is my thought exactly!
My favorite L’Artisan Parfumeur fragrance is Mon numero, but I enjoy Timbuktu, too. I live in ROmania

  • A salty iodine vanilla is definitely something I didn’t expect. I’d love to discover it. Thank you for the very detailed review and the draw. My favourite LAP is Timbuktu. I live in EU.

  • Amanda32828 says:

Loves this article so detailed and creamy. I can almost smell the words. I have been looking quite some time for the perfect vanilla scent and according to what I read, I just found it. Thank you for the wonderful article and for the opportunity to enter this giveaway. L’Artisan Parfumeur Couleur Vanille truly sound like the it fragrance for the spring and summer season approaching us soon. I’m sure smelled delicious. Commenting from Orlando, Fl USA.

  • I don’t think a more appropriate photo could have been used to match your description. Vanilla ice cream by the beach…. I have not tried any L’Artisan Parfumeur fragrances so I don’t have a favorite.
    FL, USA

  • What a gorgeous concoction from L’artisan once again. The breezy vanilla- salt combination is very modern but interesting in my opinion, and the note of immortelle is something I am looking forward to explore. I have many Artisan favorites: Tea for two, Traversee du Bosphore, La chasse aux papillons… and I am in the EU, thanks for the lovely article and draw!

  • I loved how Despina detailed the very different stages of the fragrance, going from a salty vanilla down to a light amber with a light and airy saltiness about it the entire time. Sounds amazing! I think my favorite is Timbuktu. I am from PA in the USA.

  • Take me on a journey. “where this exquisite raw material is being cultivated; leafing through an atlas, like an adventure novel”. Vanilla, touched by the sea breezes and warmed by the sun.

My favorite L’Artisan is Mure Et Musc Extreme, purchased at the L’Atisan boutique in St. Germaine. Smelling it takes me back to Paris.

  • Beautiful fragrance, beautiful review. I don’t have a favorite just yet so maybe this one will be it! USA

  • I love how Despina has given specific descriptions of each stage that the scent goes through, and it’s sounds like a true journey from that first spritz! The only LAP I’ve been able to sniff is Bana Banana, which I love. I’ll be searching for this one though… NJ, USA

  • Oh!!!! This sounds so yummy and comforting! I haven’t added a really good vanilla fragrance to my collection in some time. I like that the drydown combines both the gourmand quality of vanilla and the sultriness of amber. My absolute favorite L’Artisan fragrance is Noir Exquis.
    I live in the US.

  • I remember the wonderful Vanille Absolument, so rich and yet not at all sickly. This one is very different but still a very enjoyable vanilla, and Despina’s description is spot on in my personal experience with this fragrance. My absolute favourite from this house remains Passage d’Enfer. Greetings from London, UK

  • I love the way Despina describes this beautiful sounding vanilla fragrance. With salty caramel vanilla and airy sea influences. This sounds wonderful. I do love Havane Vanille. USA

  • The part that draw my attention from Despinas review is the following: “a pleasing salty contrast to the rich, caramelised vanilla – proving that, just like in fine pâtisserie, a touch of salt can enhance the aromatic experience, while moderating any excessive sweetness…..”
I love the way it balances the gourmand vanilla sweet notes with salt in order to make it smell even better more sensual on one’s skin…
My favorite L Artisan Parfumeur creation is Amber Extreme and Mure and Musk
Thank you for the lovely review and opportunity to experience such a special aromatic creation
    I live in EU, Greece.

  • LinePlaneVolume says:

Despina’s multiple descriptions of how the salt interplays with the vanilla all sound compelling. This might be something that skirts my partner’s sensitivity to a too gourmand vanilla. Writing from Pacific Northwest, US.

  • bigscoundrel says:

The salty vanilla does sound like a trip across the Indian Ocean. I only have Timbuktu from L’Artisan, but I hope to add another soon. New Jersey, USA.

  • I was little apprehensive with it being an out and out gourmandish fragrance which personally is not to my liking but Despina’s review gives a good sense of what to expect that it is a good balance of fresh, gourmand and amber. I would love to try it out. A reader from Los Angeles, CA, USA

  • I am drawn to this vanilla scent with salty, sunny, fresh notes, and a light floral with a floral hint from the freesia. I very much like Dzhing from L’Artisan and would love to try this one. I am in the USA.

  • samppahoo says:

This sounds like a really great summer perfume, cozy and fresh at the same time. The ice cream on a beach created a nice and summery vibe. I was intrigued by the combination of vanilla and salt and would love to experience it. I have never tried anything from this house before and I am

Beautifully written, impossible to choose from this review what I liked the most because all the words are like poetry. Well done Despina, one of my favourite pieces.
I’m a vanilla lover but extremely fussy with this ingredient. I can’t wait to try out this one as I’m also a devoted fan of the perfumer work. I live in France.

  • I enjoy the idea of a salty gourmand. Sound like something you could wear all year. My favourite L’Artisan Parfumeur perfume is La chasse aux papillons extreme. It’s a total compliment getter. I live in Romania.

  • Iodine accord? Interesting. Vanilla was the first fragrance I fell in love with, before it was suddenly everywhere in every drugstore and beauty counter and candles and fabric softener. Despina’s review reminds me that vanilla can be different, exotic, unique. I am in the USA

  • I enjoyed Despina’s review especially the development of the various notes. I was a fan of Havana Vanille. I love that Couleur Vanille uses Madagascar vanilla and has the salty and aquatic components. I look forward to trying this one. I have too many favorites in this house to name. Thanks for the giveaway and I live in the US!

  • m.r.everything says:

If you can’t find something you like from L’Artisan Parfumeur, something may be wrong with your nose, haha! They have such a vast repertoire of fine fragrances that it is hard to walk away with something you love. I have a few from the line and love each of them! Skin on Skin, Tea for Two, and Traversee du Bosphore happen to be some of my favorites from the line, although I still have a lot of exploring to do with the brand! Havana Vanille was a fragrance that I always wanted to get a bottle of… I never tried it but I wanted to blind buy it for the longest time. I never did because it always seemed like something else came up, but that one has always been one on my wish lists. Now, forget it…. it has long been discontinued and the prices, if you can find one, are astronomical! When I saw the release of Couleur Vanille, to say I was excited, was an understatement! I will definitely be seeking out a sample of this one either way. I was also wondering how this one would compare to Juliette Has A Gun’s Vanilla Vibes. I have that one and love it. It is such a different vanilla with it’s salty tones. This one sounded like it could be like Vanilla Vibes, but after reading Despina’s review, it sounds as if it is a deeper fragrance than VV. Where VV is light and airy, I feel like Couleur Vanille could have the same salty vibe, but a much deeper and more complex note breakdown! Despina says that it gets warmer, smokier, and increasingly sensual as it dries down. I am definitely interested in this one! Thank you Despina, for yet another wonderful write-up and for shedding some airy light on this (potentially to me) beautiful vanilla release. This is one to get excited about, in my opinion! I am sure it is no Havana Vanille, but it has my attention nonetheless! Thank you L’Artisan, for your generosity, and for this superb opportunity! Thank you, as always, Michelyn, for bringing us this info, and for all you do for the fragrance community! It is appreciated more than you know! Commenting from Delaware, US. Good luck to all!

“proving that, just like in fine pâtisserie, a touch of salt can enhance the aromatic experience, while moderating any excessive sweetness”

Correct, to a certain degree of course. Overdoing the salt , even just a bit, could change the taste, and overall experience for the customer…. drastically. As traditionally trained in Paris Pastry Chef I can tell.
Delicious vanilla cake with caramel buttercream, topped with caramel drizzle, toffee and sea salt is what I imagined, when I read Dana review.
I have to say I adore Noir Exquis . The only L’Artisan in my collection , and to me the best one.
    Thank you

  • Hello

Interesting twist, and I love vanilla perfumes in general.
Sadly L’Artisan Parfumeur doesn’t send to Greece,
due to heavy customs I guess.
I enjoyed the description and the note breakdown the most,

    Greetings from Athens,Greece

    Aris

  • Thank you Despina for the review. It was interesting to note that the creator’s vision of the fragrance matched the Despina’s experience of wearing it. I love vanilla and would love to try this out, I haven’t tried any L’Artisan Parfumeur fragrances but did love Italian Leather from Memo Paris. I’m in USA

  • I love vanilla with just about anything. I haven’t smelled any of L’Artisan’s fragrances but I have heard many good things about them. Despina’s review of Coleur Vanille made me feel the summer vibes. A little bit of vanilla, even in summer just makes me happy! I’d love to have this one. Thanks for the review and the giveaway! • Coleur Vanille is a modern, airy, widely pleasing vanilla-centered scent, as described by Despina. I love vanilla and will wear any scent that has it as one of its notes. Despina did a great job describing how the fragrance wears and what one will experience.

Ooh finally they are giving us a vanilla again! I was so sad when at the beginning of my fragrance journey I tried Havana Vanille and then found out it was discontinued 🙁 Please bring this back as well! This one sounds like a perfect warm weather vanilla and although I’m not sure what immortelle smells like in nature, I’m very interested to try this fluffy sounding & yummy version. L’Artisan is one of my fav houses (though not a fan of the new, bland packaging, very un-french IMO Lol) and I love Havana Vanille, La Chasse aux Papillions & Saffron Troublant. I live in Canada, so please enter me if that is allowed? Thank you!

L’Artisan Parfumeur i know because of Noir Exquis – cuddling type of gourmands i really like. Even though I don’t know it , Couleur Vanille have the same vibe around it. I’ll be really happy to own it.
    Thank you. In US

Fresh start, vanilla, salt and darker resins, Couleur Vanille is intriguing.
L’Artisan Parfumeur is a house i really like . During the years i went through 4 bottles of Premier Figuier ( 3 EDT , and 1 EDP) .At the moment i do own 3 bottles – Traversee du Bosphore , Amour Nocturne and Skin on Skin.Last 2 are part of a different line called Explosions. Also the bottles are different.
    Thanks for the draw.
Virginia USA , or London UK … at least 97/100 times.

    P.P.
Despite Brexit , technically UK is still part of EU, until the end of the year at least 🙂

  • I love the contrast Despina draws with the salty note and how a touch of salt can enhance a fine pâtisserie, just as it enhances the vanilla note in Coleur Vanille. I absolutely adore vanilla so I’m hoping to get lucky with this draw. Never had the opportunity to try a L’Artisan Parfumeur fragrance. VA, USA

  • There’s always some kind of positive sensation around L’Artisan Parfumeur. Couleur Vanille fits well, I so need vacation with a bergamot freshly squeezed juice , and salty vanilla icecream, laying on a distant beach . I wish…
Timbuktu is my favorite L’Artisan fragrance. Thank you Despina.

Thank you for the evocative review, Despina!
The ice cream cones on the beach picture probably summarize the experience perfectly.
I had the chance to try Havana Vanille and it was a bit too sweet for my taste, but an oceanic, salty vanilla sounds wonderful. Another lovely perfume with the same salty/caramel/vanilla combo is Vanille Marine from Molinard, but it’s discontinued unfortunately.
Looking forward to sample Coluleur Vanille.
I have a few fragrances from L’Artisan that I love:Timbuktu, Dzongkha, Nuit de Tubereuse. It’s one of my favorite perfume houses.
Thank you for the wonderful draw!
    I’m in Romania.

I think I need to try Couleur Vanille. I like gourmands, but this time I’m happy we have not overly sweet vanilla fragrance, with salt, and zesty bergamot.
Calmed down vanilla, benzoin and musk drydown Is what I’m looking for.
The one L’artisan that impressed me the most is Dzing . Not only smells sophisticated, but it’s draws people into my scent bubble asking what my fragrance is.
Thank you L’artisan, and to Despina Veneti for the introduction of Couleur Vanille.
