Laboratorio Olfattivo Vanhera Review (Luca Maffei) + ‘Veni, vidi, vanilla’ draw

Laboratorio Olfattivo Vanhera Review

Laboratorio Olfattivo Vanhera Cristian Marianciuc©

Vanilla as a perfumery material is as ubiquitous as it is polarizing. Depending on the characteristic(s) of vanilla that the perfumer decides to highlight in a fragrance, perfume lovers will most likely be divided into groups that are quite distinct when it comes to their affinity for this increasingly prized ingredient. From a deliciously gourmand headliner to a solid supporting act in the background, vanilla is a quasi-omnipresent raw material.

In the case of Laboratorio Olfattivo Vanhera, composed by 2x Art and Olfaction Award Winning Luca Maffei in 2017, the vanilla appears to be playing a dual role: hero and villain at the same time: something that needs to be highlighted and celebrated as well as something that needs to be obscured or even conquered. It is the actor that steps in and out of the spotlight, enjoying the dark and the light equally.

Vanhera: a dark Vanilla, an unexpected fragrance that recalls intriguing and unclear sensations. A journey around one of the most iconic perfumery’s notes. A Vanilla perfume, not the usual Vanilla fragrance where just sweet notes are emphasized. A battle, a conflict among ingredients.” -notes from the brand

Vanhera opens with a spicy citrus rush: sparkling bergamot, aromatic cardamom and fiery pink and Sichuan pepper. Alternate waves of cool vanilla and comforting woodiness are felt shortly after the notes in the opening quiet down. The intensity of these notes is short lived, but they don’t disappear completely. Rather, they step aside from the spotlight and support the other notes in their rise and subsequent “fall”.

There is something decidedly cold about this fragrance. A cool tension between the heart and base notes creates an intriguing polarity, a fluctuating magnetism. An almost palpable love-hate relationship which switches focus between similarities and differences between the facets of Vanhera. This is an olfactive “survival of the fittest” struggle, a carefully calculated campaign of offense and defense. But this battle has no victors nor vanquished. Laboratorio Olfattivo Vanhera is a choreographed conflict, one in which the notes are meant to be at odds with each other but never dissonant.

Laboratorio Olfattivo expand on this idea: “In Vanhera, a Madagascar Vanilla absolute tries to find a place in a universe of ingredients that want to suppress it. Vanhera is surrounded, almost besieged, by spicy notes of Pepper, Cardamom, Cinnamon; it is embraced by warm notes of Sandalwood and Cashmeran and it is stained by Karmawood, Timbersilk and ambery notes. Nevertheless, the Vanilla absolute arises and makes its presence felt, conquering heart and soul of whoever smells it.”

Laboratorio Olfattivo Vanhera is an atypical vanilla-centric fragrance. It relies on the raw materials themselves but also on the friction and tension between them to tell its story. With unexpected “plot twists” and surprises, Vanhera is epic in a literary way. It will delight the unsuspecting wearer and it will excite those who pay close attention to the tales it wants to tell.

Notes: Bergamot, Cardamom, Sichuan Pepper, Pink Pepper, Sandalwood, Cashmere Wood, Cinnamon, Vanilla absolute, Karmawood, Timbersilk, Amber, Musk.

Disclaimer: A bottle of Vanhera was sent to me by Laboratorio Olfattivo for this review. All opinions expressed are my own.

How Christian describes the vanilla as both hero and Villain that need to be both celebrated AND conquered and that there seems to be a love hate relationship with the fragrance between the notes sounds exciting, unusual and AMAZING!

I’ve never even heard of Karmawood or Timbersilk so I would be intrigued to find out what they smell like.

    I’m in Houston Tx.

  • DulciusExAsperis says:

I had to google Timbersilk and Karmawood to find out more. Looks like they are both scent molecules that evoke woods – Karmawood is sandalwood like and Timbersilk is a woody amber. Very intriguing. I’m interested in this one because I only really like vanilla in fragrances if it’s well tempered by other notes and this sounds like it fits the bill, for sure! Plus, I love pink and Sichuan pepper as well as cardamom. I’m in the USA.

  • Very nice and intriguing review. I am a big vanilla lover, and I like this note in various forms. So atypical vanilla fragrance instantly sparks my interest. I am from the EU.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

I love the imagery of Madagascar Vanilla absolute trying to find a place in a universe of ingredients that want to suppress it. I somehow imagine that this one would play very differently on the skin of one individual to another. I’m super intrigued by this review. Thank you for the draw. USA.

  • Mohamed Tarek says:

Very enticing almost poetic review to describe a very unusually character as the scent of vanilla. While vanilla in itself is very enigmatic and by habit has been associated with everything sweet. I believe in itself can be a very unusual darker component of the fragrance.
I would love to get try it

    Thanks

  • Those notes sound like they’d be amazing together and for the upcoming cool weather! Thanks for the draw. From Indianapolis.

  • Great review by Christian. The battle of love and hate. The notes sound so good Vanilla sandlewood amber. Love to smell this wonderful creation. Thank you for this Chance. USA

  • I happen to love vanilla scents but can see how they can become boring very easily, so this particular iteration of a vanillin scent sounds much more interesting. Like vanilla vibes, this vanilla tries to mix up the characteristics of vanilla, making it gourmand and not gourmand in the same scent. In maryland.

  • The notes in Vanhera sound delicious, particularly the vanilla (of course) and cardamom. Christian’s description made me want to order a bottle immediately! It sounds perfect for fall and winter. ~Indiana, USA

  • Loved this review! What sparks my interest in Vanhera is Christian’s comment saying that the vanilla is the actor that steps in and out of the spotlight… It seems like all the other notes are trying to rip vanilla out of the starring role so they can have their turn. Fascinating.

Thanks for the giveaway. In the USA.

  • I discovered Laboratorio Olfattivo just recently. The one that impressed me the most was Tonkade. I end up buying a bottle after i finished my sample. Great dry fruits, vanilla and cardamom oriental.
Vanhera is not a gourmand, but dark vanilla , with hefty dose of spices, and woods mix . Still I think it’s a versatile fragrance, with …unknown background story.
Thank you Cristian Marianciuc , Laboratorio Olfattivo

  • Brad Woolslayer says:

I’ve never tried any fragrances from Laboratorio Olfattivo, but now would be the time to try an interesting vanilla fragrance. The bottle looks lovely as well. I idea of vanilla playing hero and villian is certainly an interesting concept. I enjoy a nice fiery pepper accord as well. I live in Maryland USA.

  • I love that Vanhera is described as a cold fragrance, especially since vanilla is the star of the show. Vanilla fragrances are generally warm, whereas cold vanillic fragrances are atypical (as pointed out in the article). I would love to try Vanhera as I love vanilla and the way Cristian described it. I am located in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway.

  • I am excited about Vanehra because Laboratorio Olfacttivo has done great job with their citrus series so I assume more vanilla-centric fragrances will follow this release. It is vanilla release but also has unexpected twists. I am in US.

  • As a classically trained in Paris Pastry Chef, I can say vanilla can taste, and smell in vast amount of ways. It depends if it’s Madagascar or Bourbon vanilla (mostly) , the grade of it A/B or C , it could be vanillin or ethylvanillin, and so on. Despite the common belief, most people can’t tell the difference in taste, and smell between all above.
Cristian Marianciuc take on Vanhera reminded me of making, and later eating Orange Cardamom and Cinnamon Buns somewhere in the woods.
    I’m new to Laboratorio Olfattivo
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign

  • I loved the imagery of a battle between the ingredients. Also im a big fan of vanilla and one which is different like Vanhera sounds great. The notes also sounds wonderful and I’d love to see how the tension plays out on skin. Thanks for the generous draw. From USA.

  • What a lovely review of Laboratorio Olfattivo Vanhera by Cristian describing the yin and yang dance of vanilla with other ingredients. Surely in Laboratorio Olfattivo Vanhera vanilla does not seem to be a plain old vanilla note but plays a main character sometimes, a villain of sorts, then plays hide and seek, then appears as a valiant hero of sorts. Vanilla, villain, valiant in Laboratorio Olfattivo Vanhera. No experience with this brand, yet, but I am already intrigued by Laboratorio Olfattivo Vanhera. Thanks for the review and draw. From USA.

  • Every time I see vanilla in the notes – I am here for it. Wow.. what an interesting, amazing mix of notes, honestly some I haven’t even seen/heard before. The Cristian’s review certainly makes you wonder and intrigued what does this simple but cool bottle of “Vanhera” smell like?! Hoping to get a chance to smell it/find it in stores one day.

  • When i first saw Vanhera on Laboratorio Olfattivo’s site the warrior image emerged in my mind, now, reading Cristian’s exquisite review i only can imagine the delight of this atypical and conflictual vanilla-centric fragrance, all it’s notes are to die for! From Romania with love!

  • Another fragrance with karmawood, Laboratorio Olfattivo has very precise frangrances built with a specific image in mind. Hopefully i get the chance to try it out. Thank you for the opportunity. I live in Romania, EU.

  • wandering_nose says:

What an amazing and thrilling review, thank you, Cristian! Play of contrasts, battle with no winners or losers… Vanhera sounds like an absolutely unique vanilla fragrance. In a world of fluffy, sugary vanillas, to come out with something different takes a lot. I would love to smell this vanilla embraced & entangled by the accompanying notes. Based in Ireland, EU

  • Bryant Worley says:

I really appreciated the thought (and skill/deft touch) that the Perfumer put into this fragrant creation. And as I appreciate a non-linear scent, this will not disappoint me (“This is an olfactive ‘survival of the fittest’ struggle, a carefully calculated campaign of offense and defense. But this battle has no victors nor vanquished. Laboratorio Olfattivo Vanhera is a choreographed conflict, one in which the notes are meant to be at odds with each other but never dissonant.”)
    Lunga vita alla Vaniglia!!!

I live in Waldorf, MD, USA.

  • Cristian! What a fascinating & dynamic review! Vanhera certainly sounds like an intriguing experience! ❤️ I often adore vanilla, but like everything, it depends on how it is used, balance, quality, etc. I would be very interested to experience the “friction” & “tension” that Cristian describes! Thank you for this opportunity! USA

  • This sounds incredible. I love vanilla and the description of the duality of the fragrance sounds intriguing and unique. Vanilla, cinnamon, woods….sounds perfect!

  • Give me all the vanilla. I don’t care what the haters say. Karmawood and timbersilk are new to me, but that’s the beauty of vanilla – it compliments so many other scents. This is a great draw. In Louisiana USA.

  • First off from the title “Luca” caught my attention. He is genius!! Don’t know why I didn’t know about this one. I love a fragrance with a plot twist. I am not familiar with this line. Thanks. USA.

  • I was attracted to the spicy elements in Vanhera. It sounds like a multi faceted fragrance that’s ever changing. Thanks for another fabulous draw! Mich USA

  • Since i love anything vanilla this review of course parked my interest. Especially since she plays here her double role, being both sweet and dark.

  • Sorohan Adriana says:

Gorgeous and eccentric vanilla! I love vanilla and it is present in most of my perfumes in the most floral part. This vanilla is sweet and fresh at the same time I think it is interesting. I want to see how it is.
I am from Eu Bucharest Romania Europe

  • its appeal to me its unisex fragrance and its people favorite note Vanilla with cinnamon and amber, it s like Herod notes. I like it a lot. I am in Sweden EU

  • Thank you Christian for an in-depth review of Vanhera. This appears to be quite a unique fragrance. You’ve piqued my interest in how your assessment shows a “survival of the fittest struggle” between the notes. One I’d like to experience for myself. USA

  • The fact this vanilla is a “cold” one in vibe got my attention most. I usually associate vanilla with warmth automatically: it is an enveloping, comforting, rich perfume note to me. Yet, the fact it
opens with citrus and contains woods and peppers could do that. Anyhow, it sounds like an exhilarating and unusual fragrance.
    I am in the EU.
    Thanks!

  • Great review Christian! I have. love-hate relationship with vanilla. Most vanilla centric scents I’ve tried tend to the overly sweet and uninteresting. I do usually like vanilla in a supporting role where it tempers wood or spice notes. I like Christian’s observation about vanilla stepping in and out of the spotlight with other notes trying to elbow their way in, I’m in MD, USA.

  • Wow what a beautiful description Christian! This is a fragrance that I have wanted to try, after falling in love with Vanagloria. I love how he describes this as atypical and having plot twists. Sounds like a vanilla journey I want to take! I’ve heard of Timbersilk and smelled it in an indie perfume and loved it, but not sure if I’ve smelled karmawood! In NY, US

  • Sherin Thomas says:

I like the way he describes the vanilla as both superstar and devil that need to be both celebrated conquered and that there seems to be a love hate relationship with the fragrance between the notes sounds exciting, unusual. I’ve never even heard of Karmawood or Timbersilk so I would be curious to find out what they smell like. From PA, USA

  • Laboratorio Olfattivo i know because of Alkemi . Nice balsamic gourmand with smokiness , and decent dose of red wine in the base.
Vanhera os appealing to me because of its bitterness , right amount of woods, spiciness , and playful , not overly sweet vanilla accord.
    Alkemi is my favorite one
Cristian Marianciuc and Laboratorio Olfattivo , thank you
    Cheers with Cabernet Sauvignon

  • Vanilla playing a dual role of hero and villain at the same time… Very fascinating!!! I myself LOVE vanilla but I definitely understand the love/hate relationship people have with it!! Great review Cristian, you explained it perfectly!!! USA thanks Cafleurebon as always & good luck everyone on this beautiful draw!!!

  • Very exciting review Christian. The image of Vanilla as a warrior against conquerors trying to get its place under the sun is amazing. Epic as you say! I like Vanilla and last years we had amazing perfumes (maison tahite) with this pod but sometimes they are too sweet. This seems to be cold, full of tension with ingredients such as cardamom and pink and Sichuan pepper play their part in this battle against Madagascar Vanilla , who conquer our skin at last. I live in Spain, EU

  • Vanilla, sandalwood and cinnamon is always a great idea!
Please count me in for this one!
    Thanks! Europe

  • I have a love/hate relationship with vanilla. I usually prefer it as a light supporting player, but this sounds like an exception to my rule. I’m interested in the “plot twists” noted. NC USA

  • Andrei Artimon says:

I had to google Timbersilk and Karmawood to find out more. Looks like they are both scent molecules that evoke woods – Karmawood is sandalwood like and Timbersilk is a woody amber. Very intriguing. I’m interested in this one because I only really like vanilla in fragrances if it’s well tempered by other notes and this sounds like it fits the bill, for sure! Plus, I love pink and Sichuan pepper as well as cardamom. I’m in the USA.

  • I like vanilla-centered fragrances, but, in my limited experience, they can often feel quite simple in their structure. I’m intrigued by how complex Cristian makes Vanhera sound….more so since he describes it as “cold,” which is not an adjective I associate with vanilla. I’d love to win a bottle. I’m in Oklahoma, USA. Thanks, as always, for the draw!

  • Sandro Mateush says:

    This scent is really special.
“hero and villain at the same time” – this is a perfect description!
This fragrance is very iridescent – at first it plays vanilla with spices on the background, then the spices become dominant, leaving vanilla a little behind, BUT then vanilla becomes the main once again and the spices become quieter – and such a game lasts all the time while the fragrance is on you…the notes leave and return.
That’s why this scent sounds impressionable. The fragrance is very special, delicate, for the right day and mood. Love it!
Thank you for the excellent article, very accurate description!

    I’m from Kyiv, Ukraine, EU

  • I very love vanilla as an ingredient. And I think that is even better if it used in a little bit unique way. I would very love to try Vanhera. Thank you for the chance, I live in Europe.

  • Fantastic review Cristian! What sparks my interest based on your review is the idea of the vanilla playing a dual and non-traditional role – playing both the hero and the villain of the same time. As you pointed out, vanilla can be quite polarizing, and I am one who finds myself very hesitant around vanilla fragrances as I dislike sweet scents in general. However a vanilla that is not an overly sweet gourmand, that rather lives in light and dark equally, that enjoys defying traditional roles and expectations is one I quite expect I will enjoy. A vanilla fragrance described as “a battle, a conflict among ingredients”? How unique, sign me up!

    I live in the US.

  • I love vanilla fragrances, or to rephrase it – I love INTERESTING and CHALLENGING vanilla fragrances. Cristian’s review was great, especially how he described the clash between the notes in the perfume – all of it sounds extremely interesting, and knowing the Laboratio Olfattivo track record in producing amazing perfumes, this one sounds like another winner. I’d like to try it out very much! I live in Croatia, EU.

  • I really like everything I tested and was created by Luca Maffei. Looking at the notes, I am sure I will be enjoying this one also.

  • constancesuze says:

Good morning! I always like the idea of a cold-feeling vanilla. And I haven’t had the chance to try much by Luca Maffei, though his work seems interesting. In the US.

  • Spicy vanilla perfume??? Yes please. <3 I loved hearing Cristian's take on this fragrance moving from a spicy citrus to cooling vanilla woody perfume. It sounds beautiful. I live in the USA.

  • When I read Ida review on Limone I thought about the saying When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.
Perfect Summer fragrance i now own , thanks to Ida. It’s my second Laboratorio Olfattivo ,together with Tonkade.
Vanhera is made by the different perfumer, compared to Limone, and Tonkade . Spicy woody vanilla is right up my alley.
My favorite Laboratorio Olfattivo is Tonkade.
Cristian thanks for the fine work , and thanks to Laboratorio Olfattivo
    USA

  • This is an interesting one. I love when vanilla is done “differently”. The one thing that really stands out to me is when Crisitan describes it as a cold fragrance. I don’t understand how something with spiciness and vanilla and woods could be cold, and feel like I need to smell it for myself. I am in the US.

  • Thank you for the wonderful review Christian.

This fragrance is super interesting becuause my mind cannot fathom the idea of a cold vanilla scent! Vanilla itself smells like a hug and combining it with notes like cardamom and pink peppercorn. Also learnt about Karmawood and Timbersilk, which I’ve never heard of before.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • When I first became obsessed with perfume early this year, I assumed that I “didn’t really like vanilla”, which is a hilarious notion to me now. To be fair, for most of my life, I’d also assumed that I “didn’t really like perfume”. In reality, I had been traumatized by too much Bath and Body Works/Warm Vanilla Sugar as a kid and I just don’t prefer the types of perfumes that have been most popular amongst my generation throughout my life.

It turns out that my favorite vanillas are the dark vanillas. Deep and complex. Spiced and woody. I have been looking for my Holy Grain vanilla fragrance, but have come realize that perhaps there are many. Cristian makes Laboratorio Olfattivo Vanhera sound like a definite candidate for a Holy Grail vanilla. I’ve got to get my nose on it!

I live in St. Louis, MO in the US. Thank you for the opportunity.

  • Vanilla is present in most of my favorite perfumes, so I’m automatically interested in this. A cold vanilla is interesting and new. I already love Alambar from this brand.
    I live in Denmark, EU.

  • I love any perfume that blends ample spices with sandalwood and/or vanilla. I often see the reviews for that genre of perfume on fragrantica complaining about things like “too much clove” or “all I smell is cinnamon” or “vanilla bomb” as if these were bad things lol. I for one appreciate that with some of these powerful notes, I can never be sure which will win on my skin chemistry. So I appreciate the playful spirit of this war in Vanhera, and the way Christian chose to write about it. I imagine I’d be a completely neutral observer in this scent battle, quite happy no matter the winner or the journey. (USA)

  • I am so curious about two facets of vanilla in a fragrance. I am a big fan of vanilla scent but have never thought of its dual roles. This review really sparks my interest for Vanhera. It sounds nice, I am searching something that really sets me apart from others and hope that Vanhera would be that one.
    USA

  • I love vanilla but its extremely played out by everyone. I wonder if this polar opposing vanilla can wow me and redefine what we perceive as the most “basic” of flavours/scents

  • Cold vanilla sounds very intriguing, a vanilla that has to constantly conquer a choreographed conflict even more. And the raw materials nature-morte is stunning as always!
    I’m in EU

  • Greetings from Columbia, MD. I don’t have any vanilla fragrance but this atypical vanilla fragrance by laboratorio olfattivo sounds very appealing and delicious.

  • Very interesting review! Love vanilla very much!
Very intrigued by this ending “It will delight the unsuspecting wearer and it will excite those who pay close attention to the tales it wants to tell”.
Unfortunately, I am not familiar with LO perfumes.
    US

  • What sparks my interest most about Chris’s review is the idea of a “cold vanilla”. This is so intriguing because it is different than most vanillas I have smelled before. I love the notes for this fragrance and the “plot twists” sound lovely. Kind regards from IN, USA.

  • Leefs falling from the trees, slightly windy afternoon and I’m walking on the streets of Milano. All those pictures came up in my mind right now , Vanhera feels kind of nostalgic …
Laboratorio Olfattivo is one of the most underrated niche houses out there . I own two bottles , Alambar and Daimiris , love both. Value for the money is great.
    Thanks a lot
USA only , hopefully not for long

  • I like the description of cool vs warm in this fragrance. I’m a fan of all vanillas from cupcake to boozy, sweet to spicy, so I’m eager to try this one and to try this house. I’m in the US, thanks for the great review.

  • Sherin Thomas says:

I should say vanilla playing a dual role of hero and villain at the same time… Very fascinating!!! I myself LOVE vanilla but I definitely understand the love/hate relationship people have with it!! Great review Cristian, you explained it perfectly!!! USA thanks Cafleurebon as always & good luck everyone on this beautiful draw!!! From PA USA

  • I must admit I am not the ultimate vanilla fan…when it’s too sweet it’s too much! And in fact I like it mostly when it is used as a base note, to support the construction of the fragrance. This is the reason why I am very intrigued by Vanhera, because Cristian describes it as a “cold” vanilla and atypically vanilla-centered fragrance. I also do not own anything created by the talented Luca Maffei and so I am very curious. Love the image of the battle between the notes, it would be really a treat to be the lucky winner! Greetings from Italy

  • Vanillander65 says:

    Wow, Vanhera sounds so good!
I love when companies come up with a balanced vanilla. We need a little bit of cold out there, not just candy sweet vanilla.
I live in the EU. Thank you for the amazing review!

  • I love vanilla in perfumes. And if this fragrance has some unexpected “plot twists” and surprises, I’m intrigued to try it.
    I’m from Sweden

  • Cristian describes this fragrance as a cool vanilla witch is very intriguing because the vanilla based perfumes I know are warm and sweet. I’ m looking forward to smell it.
    Ioana from Romania

  • Grown up fragrance is what I’m expecting from Vanhera , because of all the spices, sandalwood, and the other woody notes in the fragrance. Not overly sweet new vanilla fragrances are kind of rare nowadays. I would
I’ll gladly wear it the Fall.
I have not smelled Laboratorio Olfattivo fragrances yet .
    Nice giveaway, USA
    Regards

  • I would love to finally try a fragrance from Laboratorio Olfattivo. I’d like to try a fragrance which was made by perfumer Luca Maffei. I want to see what the spicy citrus opening is like in combination with the vanilla. This company seems to use high-quality vanilla in an enjoyable way. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • The part that caught my interest was about the “cold” feeling of this scent! Spices and vanilla usually skew warm, so the cooling aspects make this sound like an intriguing take on vanilla. I’m in the camp that is sometimes bored by vanilla overdoses, but if it’s approached with a fresh technique, a vanilla can be irresistible. I’m in the US, thanks for the draw!

  • Laboratorio Olfattivo fragrances I don’t know, Cristian Marianciuc review of Vanhera transported me to Italy country side , and the local coffee shops, drinking spiced up coffee. Not every vanilla fragrance needs to be super sweet. Vanhera is well done not your typical vanilla , made by famous nose like Luca Maffei
I’ll have to sample Laboratorio Olfattivo
Thanks for the review, and the draw
By the time of the winner announcement, I’ll be back in US
