Laboratorio Olfattivo Tantrico Review (Lucien Ferrero) + “I am the dragon”  giveaway

It is no secret that I’m a long-time big fan of Laboratorio Olfattivo, and I have raved here, in detail, about the holy grail vanilla of Vanagloria, the pirate air of Cozumel, and the deep charm of Tonkade.

Laboratorio Olfattivo Tantrico, created by Lucien Ferrero Maitre Parfumeur is an elegant and surprising take on the theme of sandalwood: “What is more noble for a perfumer than Sandal attar? Without a doubt it is the most precious essential oil in the history of perfumery, with a refined elegance, an unparalleled sensuality, and an intimacy that I invite you to try.” said Lucien Ferrero, in a note from the brand.

“A forest, then. Beautiful trees. And a lady singing.

Love on the water, love underwater, love, love, and so on.

What a sweet lady. Sing lady, sing! Of course, she wakes the dragon.

Love always wakes the dragon and suddenly

flames everywhere.”*

The top notes of Laboratorio Olfattivo Tantrico are a blast of aromatic essences, sizzling bright on the skin, like a snake turned into a dragon, rapidly shedding one translucent skin into the next.  The first minutes felt exactly like taking shot after shot from a frosted glass of gin, leaving my breath so freshly bitter that I colored the air around me in green and blue hues. With sharp edges of the juniper berries, the effervescence of lime, and the astringency of grapefruit on top of the prickly sage, the fragrance in the top notes has the sort of “action-adventure” type of masculine energy that I enjoy wearing, and that I have also encountered in Lucian Ferrero’s Harmonie Pastorale that I have covered here.

“I can tell already you think I’m the dragon,

that would be so like me, but I’m not. I’m not the dragon.

I’m not the princess either.

I walk through your dreams and invent the future. Sure,

I sink the boat of love, but that comes later. And yes, I swallow

glass, but that comes later.

And the part where I push you

flush against the wall and every part of your body rubs against the bricks,

shut up

I’m getting to it.”*

There are some fragrances that I feel appeal to the left side of my brain hemisphere, the ones that cater to my (more) analytical and orderly side. In the drydown, Laboratorio Olfattivo Tantrico has a slightly brutal and rugged sensuality, yet behaves all orderly and proper, just like an olfactive soldier, relentless marching on its quest. The velvety sandalwood heart has an armor built around it, with intricate chain mail, bouncing from the herbaceous and fresh woody facets of the cypress to the spicy and hot bites of the pepper, making for an interesting mixture of passionate yet very controlled energy. Very… tantrico, indeed.

Laboratorio Olfattivo Tantrico review

Laboratorio Olfattivo Tantrico by Nicoleta (in the background is a page from the book The Encyclopedia of Dragons by Mircea Cărtărescu with illustrations by Tudor Banus)

“For a while, I thought I was the dragon.

I guess I can tell you that now. And, for a while, I thought I was

the princess,

cotton candy pink, sitting there in my room, in the tower of the castle,

young and beautiful and in love and waiting for you with

confidence

but the princess looks into her mirror and only sees the princess,

while I’m out here, slogging through the mud, breathing fire,

and getting stabbed to death.

Okay, so I’m the dragon. Big deal.

You still get to be the hero.”*

The chainmail falls to the ground and uncovers the skin. Lived in, scratched, bloodied yet unbowed, warmed by the musk, the base note alternate between the sternness of cold wood nervures and the sweet richness of resins, swinging between camphoraceous and balsamic.

Tantrico is far from a linear take on the sandalwood theme, with an intimate but present aura, an elusive dragon skin that I will wrap myself in this spring.

  • What a great review. I love sandalwood fragrances (juniper berries, cypress and clary sage so interesting) and I bought Vanagloria after reading Nicoleta here. Thank you for the great photos and I live in the EU

  • Jake Dauod says:

I really like the story of this fragrance. The poem just ties in so well and I am already contemplating blind-buying. I think the notes are all good, but I am more drawn to how Nicoleta describes the fragrance’s progression. I am so intrigued by that sharp and cold gin opening, followed by the velvety heart of sandalwood, and a sweet resinous experience at the end. This progression goes hand in hand with the poem and the story of the fragrance. This sounds like a true work of art that I would love to try. Kind regards from Indiana, USA.

  • I am glad sandalwood is making a comeback as I enjoy it a lot in many classical compositions. Laboratorio Olfattivo Tantrico seems like a fresh take on the sandalwood that makes it appropriate for the coming summer season, I am in US.

  • I like idea of a nonlinear sandalwood like Nicoleta described—“bouncing from the herbaceous and fresh woody facets of the cypress to the spicy and hot bites of the pepper.” Illinois, US

  • Loved this review by Nicoleta so much! Starting from the name, that evokes erotism and sensuality. To me, the sandalwood, the herbal notes and the spices make this fragrance a perfect combination.
Would definitely try this if I have the ocassion.
    I live in the USA.

  • Great review Nicoleta!!!! Love the way you describe Tantrico!!! I have a sample of Vanagloria and it’s a masterpiece! Can’t wait to try Tantrico!!!! Love all the notes specially sandalwood!!!!
    I’m from Massachusetts, USA.

  • The choice for William Blake painting and the controlled yet passionate energy , as the name itself , leans Tantrico towards sturdy eroticism , a breath of vitality.Great description! From Romania with love!

  • I am so intrigued! A non linear sandalwood that brings to mind chain mail and dragons sounds very interesting indeed. Thank you for the review- writing from the EU.

  • Nicoleta’s review was raw, poetic, sensual, and incredibly enticing. Fitting, as her review of Laboratorio Olfattivo Tantrico gives the sense that the fragrance evokes a myriad of emotions and sensations. First and foremost, what a note breakdown; juniper berries, balsam fir, and sandalwood are all notes that I find incredibly alluring. Pair that with the overall vibe of a beautiful yet brutal metamorphosis of olfactive delight, and Tantrico airs itself as a stunner. I would love to get my nose on this one and thank CaFleureBon as well as Laboratorio Olfattivo for the opportunity. Cheers from Illinois!

  • Nicoleta, I love the review and I love sandalwood scents, but I am always afraid to be a linear approach. So glad to hear than Tantrico is not from this bunch. I have Vanagloria and since the first sniff I am an admirer of Lucien Ferrero work. So changing an amazing vanilla for the most beautiful sandal attar is great news (seems that attars are back, see Amouage…) .Elegant, sensual and intimate is the definition of this oil by Mr. Ferrero and the perfume seems to be an exact translation of these tree words. Lovely top aromatic and sizzling notes (masculine energy Nicoleta calls them) to a velvety sandalwood heart escorted by the fresh woody cypress and the spicy hot pepper. Passion and restrained energy! Great. I am in Spain, EU.

  • emorandeira says:

I LOVE how Nicoleta explains all the differences that this special perfume has comparing to other sandalwood based fragrances. I LOVE in Tenerife, Spain (EU)

  • I loved how you composed this review around the “dragon”. Also a fragrance that smells like a glass of fresh, cold gin? I want that. Thank you for this opportunity. I’m from Romania.

  • I have not tried anything from Laboratorio Olfattivo, but I like that Cafleurebon has articles and reviews on this brand on a frequent basis, thus giving us both insight on the perfumes themselves and also the chance to actually try them.
    Thank you! Europe

  • NituNicolae says:

Velvety sandalwood makes this a timeless classic, suitable for special occasions. Great review, have always wanted to try Laboratorio Olfattivo but never managed to get my hands on them, maybe I will get lucky. From Romania, EU.

  • The poem is great! I’d never heard of it. And Nicoleta’s review is quite visceral. I”d love to try this. I live in the US.

  • I loved this vivid review! This fragrance seems fresh, unique, tame as it appears but also strong, like it is set on a mission. Would definitely want to try it. From Europe.

  • I love those poems! I also love Laboratorio Olfattivo’s work and have several of their perfumes. I am so intrigued by what they do with the Sandal attar and that Timor Pepper sounds like an interesting note. Thank you! I am in the US.

  • I like earthy woody perfumes and with sandalwood as the star note in Laboratorio Olfattivo Tantrico, I am curious about this one. Thanks for the review and draw. From USA.

  • The amazing details and interesting information spark my interest. I live in Poland, EU.

  • Claumarchini says:

Like Nikoleta, I also like Laboratorio Olfattivo’s fragrances. They are so well done, and truly evocative. One of my latest purchases is Vanhera, I am not a fan of Vanilla so much, but this dark side that is explored in Vanhera really got me! Tantrico’s notes are absolutely intriguing for me, I must confess I am having some problems with Sandalwood because it is undoubtedly a fantastic note but used so much that I am looking for different interpretations and uses of it…and reading Nikoleta’s wonderful review made me want to try Tantrico immediately! I am really curious to smell the interaction between sandalwood and the clary sage and cypress and fir balsam: sounds great! Greetings from Italy

  • Thanks for this interesting review Nicoleta!

I enjoy reading a great poem. I had not heard about Richard Siken until you mentioned him, so I look forward to some reading this weekend!

Sandalwood is a comfort scent to me. I have it lingering in my house nearly every day with various room sprays and candles.
I was expecting this to be a very meditative fragrance, but from your review I get the feeling that there is a lot more to it.

This truly sounds like a heroic fragrance. What really caught my attention was your description of a slightly brutal and rugged sensuality, but with an all orderly and proper behaviour.
Wearing this must be quite an adventure!

    Greetings from the EU!

  • What an interesting approach to describe the nuances of the perfume, its journey from the first spray till it blends with the skin’s chemistry! Not to mention the drawing from a book and author I adore, Mircea Cartarescu.

My name is Anca and I currently live in Lisbon, Portugal

  • GennyLeigh says:

Sandalwood is a favorite base note of mine. It lends itself to so many variations and moods. The imagery of an olfactive soldier is riveting; brutal and relentless yet orderly and proper. The range of herbs, resins and peppers seem to steer the sandalwood into an intense yet familiar direction. MD, USA.

  • What a fun review! Nicoleta made me want to try this one asap. I’m a huge fan of sandalwood, cedar, and balsam fir. ~Indiana, USA

  • Grown up , really refined fragrance is what I’m expecting from Tantrico , because of all the spices, sandalwood, and the other woody-green notes in the fragrance.
I would I’ll gladly wear right away, it should’ve been Spring already, but it’s rather cold, and windy lately.
I have not smelled Laboratorio Olfattivo fragrances yet .
    Nice giveaway, USA
    Regards

  • Based on the review, I would like to smell this non-linear scent, loving sandalwood and clary sage. And Nicoleta’s review is lovely 🙂 I’m from Romania, EU.

  • Tantrico sounds like an absolutely mysterious and enthralling perfume. There seems to not be one single note standing out or taking the center place, but a tight composition of sandalwood, cypress, berries and resins, a spicy and woody concoction that just wants to seep into one’s person rather than take over, bend or change them.
    I live in the EU.
    Thanks!

  • WaltherP99 says:

There’s a nice 80s , early 90’s vibe around Tantrico , the way it’s made, the notes , and judging by Nicoleta impressions we have classically structured woody aromatic,
Laboratorio Olfattivo are getting some traction lately with Nero and Viaggio in Italia lines , still I believe they are slightly underrated house…. in my opinion . I own two bottles , Alambar and Daimiris , love both.
In my opinion you should also review on Cafleurebon the other brand under KAON umbrella called Jacques Zolty , I’m a huge fan of Cubata
    All profiles I already follow , @waltherp99bg
    Thanks a lot

  • Outstanding review by Nicoleta! My all time favorite note is sandalwood. What intrigues me is a sandalwood based fragrance that is not linear as most are.
Also Laboratorio Olfattivo Tantrico it is rugged sensuality but orderly and proper. Simply Amazing! Thanks for the giveaway. I live in USA

  • wandering_nose says:

Nicoleta’s review is just fantastic! The color scheme of the pictures included adds to the demure and sensual feelings that Tantrico evokes. I love how Nicoleta intertwined the fragments of the littany about dragons and surprises with the description of this unique take on sandalwood. I am intrigued by the green notes making it more masculine and rugged in its sensuality. Ah Tantrico, would you become the partner to my skin? I am based in Dublin, Ireland, EU

  • joetelegram says:

Great entry! I just loved engaging with your imagery used in describing this perfume. Things like, “a snake turned into a dragon”, and “an olfactive soldier, relentless marching on its quest.” Well delivered!

As I am somewhat new to the note of sandalwood, and reading this beautiful description, “The most precious essential oil in the history of perfumery”, I definitely want to explore this concept with more vigor.

The notes really stand out that support this perfume’s framework, like juniper berries, grapefruit, lime, sage. Other pieces like camphoraceous and balsamic notes–spicy, resinous, herbaceous, and woody as well. These really all draw the connoisseur in.

Thank you Laboratorio Olfattivo Tantrico, Lucien Ferrero Maitre, and cafleurebon.com for the opportunity to win a bottle. Also, a sincere thank you to Nicoleta Tomsa for the meaningful entry.

With best regards, Joseph O’Brien–Roseburg, Oregon (USA)

  • Laboratorio Olfattivo fragrances I don’t know yet , Nicoleta Tomsa review of Tantrico transported me to Italy country side , and the local coffee shops, drinking freshly squeezed juice . The fragrance feels in a way timeless.
I’ll have to sample Laboratorio Olfattivo
    Thanks the draw

  • The imagery is amazing! I adore sandalwood and this take on it is intriguing. I want to know how the sharpness of the juniper plays. NC USA

  • What a riveting review! The section about the orderly and relentless drydown is really thoughtful and makes me want to experience this perfume, especially considering the notes list. And who doesn’t like sandalwood in all its glory? Thanks for the great writeup, Nicoleta.

    I’m in the Midwest, USA.

  • When there’s a juniper berries in a fragrance, i can’t help, but to think of gin . Nicoleta Tomsa review of Tantrico gave me an idea for Gin & Tonic cocktail, with Lime cordial & rosemary , if you’re interested:
    1 shot Bombay Sapphire
    40ml Lime Cordial
    Tonic water
    Crushed Ice
Rosemary and lime slice to garnish
Laboratorio Olfattivo i know because of Alkemi . Nice balsamic gourmand with smokiness , and decent dose of red wine in the base.
    Thank you for the opportunity

  • Michael Prince says:

I love how Nicoleta describes Laboratorio Olfattivo Tantrico. Being such a fan of the brand Nicoletta illustrates how Tantrico is different from your typical Sandalwood based fragrance with fresh grapefruit, aromatic hues of juniper and sage, a rugged core of sandalwood, cypress, cedar, and pepper. I love how she incorporates the poem throughout her review to really give it a unique touch. I am from the USA.

  • According to Nicoleta, this fragrance is a unique and different approach to sandalwood. I really enjoy sandalwood and would love to experience Tantrico especially with the mix of notes highlighted by Nicoleta.
    Maryland, US.

  • Restrained yet passionate sounds just like principle of tantric love. I like the comparison with dragon shedding its scales and the perfume unfolding from juniper towards sandalwood.
    I’m in eu

  • Great review Nicoleta! Love the house Laboratorio Olfattivo house, this one seems incredible! What interests me are the notes – Notes: Top: Juniper Berries, Lime, Clary Sage of Provence, Grapefruit; Heart: Cypress, Timor Pepper, Sandalwood E.O.; Base: White Musks, Balsam Fir Absolute, Atlas Cedar. They sound incredible!!!

    I live in Croatia, EU.

  • Tantric, snakes and dragons, but also gin and berries and sandalwood and musk. This review is like a poem for this perfume. It was a pleasure reading it❤️
    Hugs from Romania

  • I’m very interested in trying this fragrance. I’ve been wanting to try something from this company but I haven’t had an opportunity yet- I’m under the impression that I would like, possibly, all of their fragrance releases. I like sandalwood, and I think that this fragrance might potentially be one of the highest-ranking sandalwood fragrances. I’m also interested in seeing what the other notes are like. I live in the U.S.A.

  • wilsonwc76 says:

This sounds beautiful! I’ve been a longtime fan of Laboratorio Olfattivo, especially their Mandarino. And this scent sounds like a very unique and refreshing take on sandalwood. Can’t wait to smell this on! I’m in NYC, USA.

Thanks for the great review Nicole.

I love how meditative this scent sounds with the energetic notes of juniper mixed in with the calming aspects of clary sage and cypress and a base of fir and cypress. I’m just imagining sitting deep in the woods.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • I love that there are evergreen notes in this from top to bottom. And how your review compares the experience of this scent to an action/adventure dragon quest story… but also, with gin.

Fantastic review Nicoleta! What sparks my interest based on Nicoleta’s review review is her description of it as a brash blast of intense top notes aromatic and bright quickly changing like a snake turned into a dragon shedding its skin again and again. I love scents that evolve and change and one that does so quickly and intensely definitely appeals to me. It sounds rights up my alley! I live in the US.

When I read Ida review on Limone I thought about the saying When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.Perfect Summer fragrance i now own , thanks to Ida. It’s my second Laboratorio Olfattivo ,together with Tonkade.
Tantrico is made by a different perfumer, compared to Limone, and Tonkade , Laboratorio Olfattivo were looking for different outlook i guess.
Versatile, classy woody aromatic , that’s what I think of Tantrico
My favorite Laboratorio Olfattivo is Tonkade , I even bought second bottle when I finished the first one.
Nicoleta thanks for the fine work , and thanks to Laboratorio Olfattivo

  • about the holy grail vanilla of Vanagloria”

    Bold claim, truly bold!!
I’m sorry, I know i have to talk about Tantrico , but Nicoleta claim about Vanagloria was like unexpected slap to my Pastry Chef face
I can’t say that I’m “brutal and rugged” , or that I’m particularly interested in Scandinavian dragon mythology, but I think Tantrico i can wear in the rare occasion, when I have to wear a suit.
I’ll look for Vanagloria samples now , I can’t stop thinking about the “holy grail vanilla” Vanagloria….
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign
