When I look up from my pillow I dream you are there with me.

Though you are far away I know you’ll always be near to me.

I go to sleep, sleep, and imagine that you’re there with me.

The sensation of absence can be difficult to describe. It can encompass a complicated range of responses that meander from heart-pounding realization to the empty ache of not being able to hold, touch or speak to a loved one. For me, at times it is like a repeating murmur of “not here, not, here, not here, not here …” that leaves me glassy and confused. At other times, though – usually when the years have bestowed their smudgy softness – it is a rueful smile as I remember the feel of a particular hand on my shoulder, the sound of a dog’s curious snuffle, or the peculiar lilt of a voice or laugh. My solace often comes from poetry, music, art, nature, and, of course, fragrance. Because nothing brings us back to a time in such a direct and personal way as a specific scent. And this is what Laboratorio Olfattivo endeavours to create with Miss_U, a close-wearing, warm, woody-citric scent that feels like it is whispering to your skin.

Perfumer Luca Maffei

Independent nose Luca Maffei, who created both Miss_U and Tiglio Mirabilis for Laboratorio Olfattivo in 2023, has become one of our most elegant perfumers. His work has an impressionist’s grasp of chiaroscuro and brushstroke, a tightrope walker’s balance, and a pianist’s dexterity. Miss_U is described as “an absence that becomes a presence” and wears like a heartfelt hug. This is a slow burn fragrance that starts off vanillic and powdery, before becoming a citrusy guaiac fragrance with unexpected, subtle touches of glove leather and spice.

Initially, I thought this was going to be a skin scent in the vein of Byredo Blanche. The opening is dominated by that vanilla-face power note and a splash of sweet mandarin juice, but it doesn’t take long for the woods to move in. The musky powder slowly gives way to piquant dabs of Sichuan pepper and the sweet tang of mandarin. Wait a while for Miss-U to warm and open and guaiac starts to take over in the perfume’s heart. It develops quite fully, and I can smell the various facets this lovely, gentle wood often loses in perfumery: its redolence of old paper, whiff of vanilla, and creamy, glove leather. At this juncture, I stop and wait a few minutes before testing the fragrance again. On my wrist, it has warmed into guaiac augmented with small pinches of pepper, but the bitter chocolate aspect of patchouli is now discernable. A while longer and the cocoa note becomes more prominent, fusing with vanilla, guaiac and pepper so that it feels cohesive and comforting. The citrus of the early stages hovers unobtrusively but keeps the fragrance glimmering.

Fortunately for me, I detect no ambroxan in this fragrance (that aroma chemical is my bête noire). I also don’t pick up the cinnamon listed in the notes but suspect it is part of the spicy aspect that manifests in the perfume’s center. As it wears over the course of the day, Laboratorio Olfattivo Miss_U really grows on me. It doesn’t get in the way, but projects just enough that I feel cocooned by it into the evening. And every time I come back to it, raising my wrist to my nose, I breathe in gently spiced guaiac, cocoa powder, and that off-sweet, mellow smell of candied orange rind. It is graceful, addictive and consoling, the sort of fragrance I would reach for gratefully when tired, down, or feeling a bit Zen and not wanting my feathers ruffled by a look-at-me-fragrance. You know how wrapping yourself in your favourite cashmere sweater feels on a rough day? The embrace of an old friend? Or re-reading a cherished passage under a spreading old tree while the breeze blows gently? That’s what Miss-U smells like. It is a blown kiss in a bottle.

Notes: Bergamot zest, yellow mandarin, cinnamon, Sichuan pepper, ambroxan, black agarwood, patchouli, vanilla, guaiac wood.

  • My interest was sparked when this offering was described as starting off vanillic and powdery, before becoming a citrusy guaiac fragrance. Then with unexpected, subtle touches of glove leather and spice. US

  • “You know how wrapping yourself in your favourite cashmere sweater feels on a rough day? The embrace of an old friend? Or re-reading a cherished passage under a spreading old tree while the breeze blows gently?” Wow, I would take any one of these but all three! Yes please!! Reading in the US.

  • I’m having a moment with Laboratorio Olfattivo. I’m obsessed with Vanigloria and Tonkade but I have yet to try a different scent profile from them. I’m intrigued by this one and would love to try it! The concept and profile roped me right in!
    Coming from MA, USA.

  • The cocoa note really sparkes my interest because I absolutely love it and I think it’s very underrated and underestimated. It’s so mysterious yet well known. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

I’m very intrigued to try Laboratorio Olfattivo Miss_U, especially when Lauryn describes it by saying: “every time I come back to it, raising my wrist to my nose, I breathe in gently spiced guaiac, cocoa powder, and that off-sweet, mellow smell of candied orange rind. It is graceful, addictive and consoling”. I like its list of notes. I like Amouage “Journey Man” and that’s the only fragrance I have so far which has sichuan pepper. I would like to try something from Laboratorio Olfattivo. I’ve been very interested in trying some of their releases, and Miss_U is now one of them. I live in the U.S.A.

  • The first time I heard of Luca Maffei was on Cafleurebon. He sure seems like a talented perfumer and Miss_U intrigued me because it is a kiss in a bottle
Like Lauren I don’t care for ambroxan heavy perfumes so I am truly intrigued by one that feels like a hug

  • My interest was sparked when this fragrance was described as wearing like a heartfelt hug. This sounds like the perfect fragrance for me and thus article was beautifully written. The notes of citrus sound amazing. I live in the US.

  • Lauryn says Laboratorio Olfattivo Miss_U “is graceful, addictive and consoling” which sounds like what I am looking for as we start moving towards autumn and cooler, darker days. It also sounds very elegant, and who wouldn’t want that?!?

  • This part of Lauryn’s review sparked my interest; “This is a slow burn fragrance that starts off vanillic and powdery, before becoming a citrusy guaiac fragrance with unexpected, subtle touches of glove leather and spice.”

  • Love that this ipens like a skin scent and has ambroxan. Cocoa note also sparked my interesa and desribing the scent of missing. I’m from eu.

If it’s Luca Maffei for Laboratorio Olfattivo, it can only mean one thing : amazingness :).
Loved Lauryn’s review although it left me with a touch of sadness. I hope Miss_U feels like more of a longing, than feeling the absence of someone/something.

  • Oh Lauren, what a beautiful review of how this perfume makes you feel. Everyone should have such a scent, if scent is your love, to keep company, comfort, empower, remind…whatever you need. The blend sounds like it was created with thoughtfulness and love. I live in NY.

  • katyakotovskaya says:

Haven’t had the pleasure of experiencing Miss_U yet, but Lauryn’s description paints an alluring picture. It definitely sounds like a graceful fragrance, especially with that pepper and patchouli pairing. I’m now eager to try it for myself. EU

  • Wow this review really made me thing. It made me think of someone I missed. And if a fragrance can evoke that, I am sold. I live in NJ

  • Nice review Lauryn! I agree with the difficulty of describing the sensation of absence of a loved one. Even more difficult is overcoming it. Scents are a powerful tool to bring back a memory. Mr. Maffei in Miss_U wants that an absence becomes presence and merge sensuality and caresses in a woody-citric close to the skin perfume. But it is not just a skin perfume, even the opening of vanilla-musky powder seems so. Right after the woods enter the scene in the form of gentle guaiac helped but spices as pepper and cocoa powder. as Lauryn says is the embrace of an old friend… I live in Spain, EU-

  • I love Lauryn’s description of Miss_U’s leather note! Creamy glove leather sounds like just my thing. Thanks for the opportuntiy to win! I’m in MN, USA.

  • I first heard of Luca Maffei through Cafleurebon and realized I sampled several of his fragrances already (Le Loden, Lys Nobilis). I’m interested in his use of guaiac wood in Miss_U. I like the old paper scent and it seems to be used to great effect here with the citrus, spice and vanilla. I’m in the US.

  • The opening of this review is beautiful—I recently said goodbye to our dog and I felt “the sound of a dog’s curious snuffle” keenly. Luca Maffei’s interpretation of that feeling is full of texture and subtlety, like Sichuan pepper over mandarin-splashed powder and a focus on guaiac. I’m glad Miss_U wears relatively close, with a spiced core and restrained citrus, because that feels true to the theme. Lovely review, Lauryn.

I’m in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway.

  • Love the poem. I’d like to wear a heart felt fragrant hug. I love Luca’s creations. Candied orange peel and cocoa are fantastic notes. Thanks for the chance. USa.

  • This sounds brilliant! A close-wearing, warm, woody-citric scent that feels like it is whispering to your skin and wears like a heartfelt hug. It is graceful, addictive and consoling, the sort of fragrance you would reach for gratefully when tired or down…

  • I have worn Luca Maffei’s creations and they have never disappointed me, the common denominator is the beauty of the perfume without ostentation. It seems like that here too. I have nothing about Laboratorio Olfattivo and this perfume intrigues me.

  • Miss_U sounds intriguing, especially based on its description. “An absence that becomes a presence” is melancholic yet comforting. I enjoy all of the notes in the fragrance, but I love how Lauryn described the guaiac wood- old paper, a whiff of vanilla, and a creamy leather glove. I am also glad she points out that the ambroxan is undetectable on her. Miss_U sounds very comforting and I would love to wear it during autumn and winter. Thank you, Lauryn, for the great review, and thank you to KAON for the giveaway. I am located in the USA.

  • This fragrance sounds so beautiful, and its notes creating comforting properties is something I love with fragrance in the fall, the warm embrace of scent that feels safe and familiar. I would love to wear this!

  • Cinnamon, vanilla, guaiac wood and agarwood sound like a winner in my book. I do not have much experience with this house, so it would be really nice to get to test the latest release.
    Thanks!

  • How intriguing Miss_U sounds. What interests me is the Sichuan Pepper note. It’s seems like a little zing inside a floating cloud. A bit ethereal.

This article was beautifully written. I sat down and read it with my afternoon green tea and now I feel happy and content. Thank you for bringing a touch of joy to my afternoon ritual, Lauryn.

Thank you for the giveaway. I’m in the USA.

  • Whereas the absence of smell can be utterly numbing, the smell of absence sounds…if not like a heartfelt hug, but at least like a reminder of both hearts and hugs – either passed or awaiting.
Would love a blowed kiss to EU/Sweden

  • FragranceIsMe says:

The notes in this fragrance resonate with me. I could see myself, like Lauren, finding it to be an addictive, yet comforting scent. I could totally relate to Lauren’s desire to raise her wrist to her nose for a whiff. Over the years, I’ve started spraying the back of my hand with fragrances that I find very addictive. I refer to these scents as my “Backhand Fragrances” 🙂

  • Wow, this sounds like a perfect autumn scent. I generally dislike patchouli, but have been discovering that, blended properly, it is such a sublime note in perfumes. The cocoa aspects it lends to this blend sound wonderful! I live in the USA

  • The most beautiful words about Miss_U are in the end of the review, and they converge to rhe definition of the scent – a blown kiss in a bottle ❤️. Although I own and have sampled quite a few if LO scents, I have yet to know Miss_U, and I’m sure its time will come.
Thank you for the review and the draw, from Europe.

  • Michael Prince says:

What sparks my interest based of Lauryn’s review of Miss_U is the concept of having a barely there woody citric skin scent that is refreshing, inoffensive, and office safe. I loved Lauryn’s description of a cocoon of gently spiced guaiac, cocoa powder, and that off-sweet, mellow smell of candied orange rind. I would love the opportunity to try this fragrance. I am from the USA.

  • I get that this is a comforting spicy woody fragrance at heart and I totally understand the feeling of “when tired, down, or feeling a bit Zen and not wanting my feathers ruffled by a look-at-me-fragrance”. Luca is surely loved and I think it will become one of the classics in not so distant future.
    I’m in the EU.

  • oh, there are often days in rainy Seattle winters that I want to be softly swathed in a comforting scent. I also just love chocolate covered orange peel, so Miss U sounds like a winner. thank you for the review and the draw. I’m in the US.

  • Thanks for the great writeup Lauryn!

Most citrus fragrances tend to want to be long lasing fresh fragrances, bringing to mind warm weather.

Miss_U is such an interesting departure from that theme, in the combination of being a quiet fragrance and one with vanilla and woods. I love how the woods embrace a component of spice, to bring in the citrus and hold off the vanilla.

    Fantastic concept.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Ooooh. The description for this is lovely. Candied orange rind, vanilla, cinnamon, and guiac wood sound lovely. It’s almost gourmand, but not entirely because of the woodiness. I’m also interested in the way there is a reminder of cocoa powder, even though it is not part of the notes. I like the idea of this fragrance being something that is cosy and warm, in the same way one feels when hugging a friend you haven’t seen in a while.

    I live in Illinois, USA.

  • Fantastic review by Lauryn!
Laboratorio Olfattivo is a fragrance house that I am totally in love with since I tried Mandarino. The quality they use is out of this world.
Miss_U is a fragrance I didn’t know I needed since know. I love the fact that guaiac is very prominent here with the citrus accords. I also love the fact that it becomes spicy with pinches of pepper and the bitter chocolate. Would love to try this one.

Oh what a treat for imagination Lauryn’s review was… Miss_U sounds just like my kind of fragrance when I am in a balanced and “Zen” mood. “It doesn’t get in the way, but projects just enough that I feel cocooned by it into the evening.” – this sentence stole my heart. That would be my perfect fall wrapper. I also noticed the people tend to react really positively to warm and cocooning woody fragrances on me, and the guaiac wood in Miss_U sounds beyond compelling. Also, as a lover of patchouli, I am delighted to hear it lends the composition its bitter chocolate aspect. The vanillic and powdery start, followed by the citrus woody with glove leather and some spiciness calls my name and I miss it although I’ve never experienced it. Thanks a million from the EU

  • Danu Seith-Fyr says:

I do not wish to be included in the draw as I already have a bottle but Lauryns words give ample scope for the exploration of this beautiful perfume, Bravo.
