Kajal Dahab Review (Chris Maurice & Rosendo Mateu) + Golden Apple for a god Draw

Kajal Dahab review

Kajal Dahab, photo by Nicoleta©

Looking up north, to a garden in Valhalla, at the golden apples of Idunn, the ones that granted immortality, youth, and vigor to the Asgardians. Looking south, to the Hesperides, the nymphs of the golden light of the sunsets, guarding Gaea’s wedding gift to Hera – the life-giving golden apples of Arcadia. Looking down, to the pages of the fairytales I grew up with: the hero quest, the magical apple-bearing tree, the ever-changing thief and guardians come back, in different forms, voiced in different languages, as a tale humanity has loved since the dawn of time. And still does, I say, clicking the icon on my desktop where the ever-shifting myth of the golden apple appears as the apples of Eden in the Assasin Creed videogame saga, which I’m revisiting, again, these days.

mythology and the golden apple

If I were to put a scent to those elusive immortality-giving golden apples, Kajal Dahab (translated as gold) would be it, as the gilded nectar inside promises and delivers an opulent fruity overdose fit for the appetite of a god.

Dahab by Kajal review

Kajal Dahab cap, photo by Nicoleta ©

Sheer sensorial delight, from the elegant pattern chosen for the black and gold packaging; the perfect, classic, heavy glass bottle, that fits perfectly in my hand – to the cap that I am seriously considering transforming into a pendant (the eight-point star that makes the golden cap is inspired by a stone paste tile forged in Ilkhanid, Iran and engraved with eight names of gold used in Persia, India, and Arabia) – everything shows attention to detail, an homage to the cultural heritage it draws inspiration from and a dedication to an extravagant yet approachable modern definition of luxury.

Golden apple, digital edit by Nicoleta

Biting into a crisp and hard Granny Smith apple, feeling your mouth water from the sour, sharp juice that sizzles, acidic – feeling as refreshing as the dawn of a new adventure. Soon, other fruits gather along, rolling alongside you, in an epicurean avalanche of sweet joys that went from mouth-wateringly tart to deliciously nectar-sweet gourmand.  Depending on how ripe a passionfruit is, it can taste like a cross between a peach, a pineapple, and a mango, swinging between syrupy sweet and tart. The fruits play hide-and-seek, bouncing between the contrasting but equally delicious facets, keeping your nose bewitched and your tastebuds craving for a bite. As a parenthesis, as late as the 17th century, the word “apple” was used in English as a generic term to describe all fruit besides berries, so if we find an “apple” mentioned in an ancient tale, it might just NOT be the apples we know of today.

Atlas and the Hesperides by John Singer Sargent

Following Hercules’ path, after the eleventh labor (the one in which he steals the apples), would have us leave the nameless fruit orchard behind, dwelling deeper into the story when our hero meets Atlas, the titan god who held the weight of the sky and the earth upon his shoulders. Atlas gave the name to the Atlas mountain range, the stone barrier that separates the Mediterranean and Atlantic coastlines from the Sahara desert, and home to the Atlas cedar tree. There is no other scent that is as grounding yet uplifting and comforting while reviving than the woody, resinous freshness of cedar – the evergreen symbol of eternal life, endurance, and immortality. Leaving behind the pleasurable and uncomplicated ludic realism of the beginning, the scent moves to a different, more abstract plane, gathering depth, weight, and warming up with the slightly camphorous nuances of the cedar, in beautiful juxtaposition to the spicy and nutty aroma of the coriander seeds.

Kajal Perfumes Paris Dahab

At the end of the journey, reaching Mount Olympus, the fragrance is elevated by clean musks, airy and fluffy like the strings of clouds left below. Bathed in the warm amber lights of the sunset, our hero kneels before the gods, the golden apple rolling from his hand.

Editor’s note: *Immortality might be an overstatement, but regarding the perfume’s technical prowess – titanic, herculean, monumental, almighty might just be the right descriptors.

Top notes are bergamot and granny smith apple; middle notes are passionfruit, coriander, and cedar; base notes are patchouli, musk, and amber.

Nice review, Nicoleta! I’m unfamiliar with the brand, but that note breakdown seems incredible. Thanks for the opportunity. I’m from USA

  • Nicoleta says Kajal Dahab is a tart fruity, composition with musky vibes. It is an airy perfume that seems well-suited to the summer days at their peak now. I am in US.

  • Sorohan Adriana says:

Nicoleta’s reviews highlight the most hidden temptation of each perfume.
This perfume is wonderful through the Epicurean combination of sweet fruits together with the mysterious and fragrant passion flower potentiated with spices and amber elegance.
I am from Eu Bucharest Romania Europe

  • I loved Nicoleta’s references to Greek and Norse mythology. It is wonderful how a fragrance can trigger a bunch of associations with all kinds of cultural elements and knowledge buried deep in childhood stories.
Dahab sounds mesmerizing. And contradictory. The ripe, juicy, tart, sharp fruit (all sorts of “apples”), so playful and seemingly shy / fleeting on one side, and then the herculean, titanic goliath of a perfume, on the other.
Would love to try this, as my first Kajal experience.

I have hear of Kajal Dahab, but never tested anything from them.

  • The review makes me desire this one, it’s notes seem to be a perfect blend, i almost see here an epic trailer , thanks for the draw and review, from Romania with love!

I liked Nicoletas review about the juxtaposition of the golden fruits and the mighty atlas cedar, and it sounds epic!

  • Well this sounds interesting! Though I have to admit with all the golden apple images, I didn’t think it would have been a Granny Smith, which is probably one of my least favorite of the regular eating apple varieties. However the other fruits coming right in definitely bring in more of a golden touch for me as well as the rest of the mid and base notes. Herculean indeed! I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • The gourmand notes Nicoleta describes are not only mouth-watering but nose itching. The avalanche of apple, peach, pineapple, and mango notes remind me of Xerjoff & Casamorati; and I know how amazing they can be. Kajal is notoriously difficult to find and sample in person. You’d expect to at least find them easily in Dubai where they ‘run their sales & logistics’ funny enough, but no such luck. I’m beginning to suspect they have an online-only distribution model. The only way to sample this house is to order a ‘DELUXE COLLECTION KIT’ which is currently ‘Sold out’. VA, USA.

  • AleksCipri says:

I love this review! First paragraph is amazing and I also have to confirm that Assassin Creed is a great game. But onto the fragrance and why I think I would love it. I adore passion fruit and Nicoleta’s description of this fragrance makes me very interested. I also love when she talks about apples. I didn’t know apple was a generic name for all non-berry fruit in ancient tales. I’m from Illinois, US.

  • Symbian Pandora says:

Wonderful review. I have never had the opportunity to try any of the Kajal line, but this one sounds terrific. Nicoletta has really piqued a new interest in this brand.
Thank you to Kajal for their generosity! Good luck to all.

  • Dahab, with its granny smith apple, cedar and passion fruit notes, sounds wonderful. I enjoyed reading about the cap and its engraved meanings. Thanks for another great article and generous draw! Mich USA

  • Deborah E says:

Wonderful review for a beautiful fragrance! I like the connection with fairytales. What drew me to it is the apple note, it made this fragrance an unexpected love for me and now I’m craving a full bottle. The point about how the name “apple” was used in the past for fruits in general was interesting. And the details about the cap! I never realized…it’s an exquisite bottle fitting for the fragrance. Thank you for sharing the opportunity for a bottle of this intoxicating perfume. I live in Texas.

  • Great review, love the mythology reference. I haven’t tried any Kajal fragrances but this one sounds intriguing. From California, USA.

  • When I was a kid my favorite candy was apple Now&Laters, every since then I’ve loved all things apple. Fragrances are no exception. Fruit and musk combination sounds amazing. I haven’t gotten around to purchasing anything from this house yet but looking forward to it. I live in Indiana USA

  • NituNicolae says:

I am a big fan of the Assasin’s Creed series, so seeing this corelation makes me very happy. From Kajal perfumes, i find the most interesting one to be Lamar. Great review, i live in Romania.

  • I feel like I was educated by Nicoleta’s review – for example, I had no idea that other fruits also were called “apples”, and not just apples. The fragrance sounds mouth-watering. I haven’t tried any Kajal yet unfortunately. I live in Finland.

  • Top notes are bergamot and granny smith apple; middle notes are passionfruit, coriander, and cedar; base notes are patchouli, musk, and amber. A beautiful description by Nicoleta I am intrigued by the notes especially Patchouli, musk and amber. A house that I am familiar with but I have not tried Dahab. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

  • If I were to put a scent to those elusive immortality-giving golden apples, Kajal Dahab (translated as gold) would be it, as the gilded nectar inside promises and delivers an opulent fruity overdose fit for the appetite of a god. A beautiful description by Nicoleta fascinated by the notes especially Patchouli, coriander, cedar and amber. The bottle is absolutely amazing a house that I am not familiar with but I am intrigued by nonetheless. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • Nicoleta’s reviews is as good as always. I realized never thought of apples as a scent, neither I remember all the imagery of this fruits in history besides the famous Adan & Eve one…Thanks for the references to Greek and Norse mythology and the child stories and videogames references… even when I think of an apple, is the red one that comes to my mind, but she introduces us to the immortality-giving golden apples. The bottle and the juice is a modern luxury: the sharp green granny at the top surroended with a juice basket of ripe fruits, the the freshness of cedar and at the base airy and fluffy musks. My favorite one from the brand is Kajal Homme, that Sebastian introduced us some time ago. I live in Spain, EU.

  • Sandro Mateush says:

I liked the idea of juicy multifaceted passion fruit and its many shades. Sounds wide. Interesting to feeling it each time differently – a day of shades of mango, a day of shades of pineapple, etc.
This makes the spectrum of the fragrance even more majestic.
I also want to mention coriander. This is one of my favorite notes in fragrances, by the way. It usually adds spicy twist to composition, like a spike on the perfect rose flower. But this spike is not superfluous, on the contrary, it complements beauty with its non-triviality and feature.
Nicoleta’s description of the fragrance sounds skillful and artistic.
It was interesting to know that the “apple” used to be called all the fruits, except berries…wow, I didn’t know about it.
Thanks to Nicoleta for a wonderful review! It turned out very beautifully.

I like granny smith apple and if Dahal dahab smells like that. I am love it! I am in Sweden EU

  • Thelstrhi says:

The way you describe this definitely makes me want to try this perfume. I love the idea of the tartness and sweetness mixing and the smell of apples has been my favorite since I was a child.

  • Aside from the gorgeous packaging, the history given is evocative. I have not yet tried any Kajal fragrances, but love the descriptions of Dahab and Yasmina! I live in USA.

  • Jennifer Mcmenamin says:

She, quite literally, made this perfume sound tempting. I’m in Louisiana, USA.

  • Stevenaintleavin says:

Loved the reference to creed assassin. Big fan own Homme. Apple is my favorite note

  • The golden apple I first thought of was the one Eris through into the wedding celebration to cause chaos. She had written “to the most beautiful” on the apple so everyone would fight over who was the most beautiful. An ingenious ploy. Nicoleta’s review tells me to remember all of the other mythological apples. Thank you! I have not tried a Kajal fragrance. I live in the US.

  • Really great review like the link to Greek mythology, certainly since I am currently reading Stephen Fry’s Mythos : The Greek Myths Retold. I am very much into fairy tales and great stories and we all know that the apple plays a significant part in various stories of the past. I really love the idea of the golden apple in this perfume especially combined with musks, amber and bergamot. This would be the perfect accompaniment when diving further into the Greek myths! Living in the EU

  • wandering_nose says:

Nicoleta has beautifully woven the mood the fragrance evokes into the myths of Hercules and Atlas, the latter doing titanic work for the sake of humanity. The composition seems comforting yet uplifting, light but at the same time grounded. I am truly hooked. Not familiar with any Kajal perfumes as of yet. I am based in Ireland, EU.

  • Christos GX says:

Great review, loved the photos and the fact that there was a mention of Hercules and Atlas and the story behind the golden apples(iam Greek so i know that story very well).I was fascinated for the combination of fragrance and the stories of golden apples and from note breakdown. Favorite that i happen to try would be:Joorie.I live in Greece.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

Lovely review. I’m still dying to try this house and those bottles are just divine. This sounds pretty amazing with the fruits bouncing around and to be anchored by a cedar base sounds wonderful. I also did not know that the word apple meant any fruit but berries. Very interesting. Thank you for the draw. I’m in the USA.

  • patrick_348 says:

This sounds very appealing and wearable. The progression of notes seems like it would be enjoyable, from the lightness of the apple and bergamot through to the amber, musks, and patchouli. I suggests almost a dawn to dusk progression, with brightness followed by intensity, followed by a mellow softness. I don’t know any Kajal fragrances, although I have heard them spoken of enthusiastically. I am in the US, in North Carolina.

  • Another mouth-watering review by Nicoleta. I absolutely loved reading this.

It was very interesting to read about the Greek and Norse mythology and the child stories and even some video games references! (Assassin’s Creed is a guilty pleasure of mine).

I love a succulent passion fruit. Nicoleta’s description of this fragrance makes me very interested. I didn’t know the apple was a generic name for all non-berry fruit in ancient tales! Very interesting.

I have the amazing Kajal Homme and have tested Lamar, but would love to try Dahab as well.

    Greetings from the UK!

  • Being from Scandinavia, I’ve grown up with the stories of golden apples in Asgard. I really enjoyed how Nicoleta related the common trope with greek mythology and the garden of Eden. To me, this perfume will now remind me of the glorious mythology of the past. Thank you for the breakdown and the draw. I live in Denmark, EU.

  • GennyLeigh says:

Apple is a tricky note for me. I’ve tried a few interesting apple centric fragrances but unfortunately most were not good on my skin. I like the addition of passion fruit in Dahab and the patch and amber base warm things up nicely. The illustrations Nicoleta used for the review are wonderful and of course the bottle is gorgeous. Favorite Kajal is Yasmina. I’m in MD.

  • Julesinrose says:

What interests me is curiosity as to what this smells like in person! I adore apples, but do not own ONE fragrance that has an apple note. I wonder why! Apple, amber, and cedar sound like a luscious mix. The bottle is exquisite! I have not tried any Kayla fragrances. In the US

  • Kajal Dahab sounds literally delicious! Ms Tomsa’s review is over the top eloquent and a joy to read…I had to read it twice just to hear her words again…such beautiful, intricate writing. Who wouldn’t want to try this perfume after hearing all the history behind it! I am in the US.

  • I’m definitely interested in trying this fragrance. I truly want to, finally, try something from Kajal. I like the notes in this fragrance. The only other fragrances that I have which have apple as an ingredient are “Hugo” from Hugo Boss and “Eternity EDP” from Calvin Klein, and I want to see what Kajal’s use of apple in a fragrance is like. Kajal fragrances seem luxurious; I truly hope to win. I appreciated Nicoleta mentioning the notes of apple, cedar, coriander, passionfruit, and the musk. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • NickKnack says:

Excellent review and your description is spot-on Nicolette!
Specifically “herculean“ – I have sampled this and unfortunately it did not work out for me and was just too saturated of a summer scent to my nose. I’m not entering the draw but it was nice to get a different perspective and I may have to check back on this one in the colder months. I hope the winner enjoys this special treat!

  • From the beginning of the review compared with tails and your imagination bring you to endless fields with apple trees and you start feeling the smell, similarly like in childhood…. unfortunately never tried this house before, and will be happy to feel Kajal Dahab as my fresh experience. From CT, USA

  • Enjoyed the article and liked how Nicoleta described this scent. Also nice to know another who is a Fan of AC 🙂
I had a decant of Dahab. It’s a really nice scent. I will gift this one if I get the chance to. Thanks, Ca

  • First off, let me say how unique and beautiful Kajal’s bottles are!

I love that Nicoleta included the two definitions of the word Kajal/Khajal. It really helped me understand what the brand is about and makes me have more of a connection with it.

I enjoyed the weaving of mythology in with the review. Kajal Dahab sounds like a multi-faceted beauty. I would love to discover it. I have heard many reviews on other Kajal fragrances but I haven’t smelled any yet. Thanks for the giveaway! In the USA.

  • Camelcutza says:

I really enjoyed Nicoleta’s review and the description of mouth watering fruit that this scent enlists as I adore the scent of ripe fruit and fruit orchards, both in real life and in fragrance.
My favorite Kajal fragrance is Yasmina and I live in Romania, Europe.

  • ElenaChiss says:

I have not tried anything from this house and I liked the (almost) last line — Immortality might be an overstatement, but regarding the perfume’s technical prowess – titanic, herculean, monumental, almighty might just be the right descriptors.
    EU. Thanks!

  • Nicoleta’s summary of Kajal Dahab as “the fragrance (is) elevated by clean musks, airy and fluffy like the strings of clouds left below” caught my eye. Notes don’t seem very unusual but are all pleasant. Nice mythological story to describe the fragrance. Never tried Kajal perfumes so can’t say much about them. Thanks for the draw. From USA.

  • Michael Prince says:

I am really interested in Kajal Dahab based on Nicoleta’s review. This sounds like an amazing fruit cocktail of apple, pineapple, passionfruit, and beragmot. There is also an amazing touch of spices as well as an amber and woody base. This sounds like a great smelling and versatile fragrance I would love. My favorite Kajal Fragrance is Lamar. I am from Ohio, USA.

  • Bubeto_GG says:

“Lady Boss” expression Michelyn used a few months back, is so stuck in my head 🙂 Now I think about it, if I see Kajal fragrance.
I have sampled most , and Dahab , and Lamar impressed me the most.
Dahab smells the way Nicoleta says it smells, picnic basket full of fruits , juiciness and other surprises.
    Thank you
Back and forth between USA and Scotland, 2 weeks in US -> 2 weeks is Scotland, and so on. Basically both USA and UK at the same time.

  • Looking at the notes for Dahab, to be honest, I can not say that I am very impressed, as the notes are ever-present in many perfumes, but knowing Chris Maurice and his style, you know that you have to expect the unexpected from him, so it will be more than what meets the eye.
Many thanks for the review, but also for the giveaway! I have not tried anything from Kajal.

  • Bryant Worley says:

I really appreciated that she emphasized the apple in the fragrsnce (as I like apple in fragrances), and how the fragrance should make you feel. And the word that stood out to me was “herculean”. I want to feel like that, so I want this fragrance.

I don’t have a favorite Kajal, but Dahab, Yasmina, Jihan, Joorie, and Kajal Homme II sound fantastic.

I live in Waldorf, MD, USA.

  • I like apple (in pies, as a fresh juice, or simple eaten), so I think it’s only normal to like apple-based fragrances as well. I am sure I will enjoy Dahab because of that prominent note of apple.
Nice selection of pictures by the way! Thank you! Reading and commenting from the EU.

  • I tend to enjoy any well-done apple fragrance, and it sounds like this one has a good balance of sweetness with other qualities. I don’t think I’ve tried Kajal scents before. (USA)

  • I’m a Barber , and i already wear Kajal Homme on almost all occasions,$185 well spent.
Lamar is just a bit more expensive, but for such high end nighttime fragrance, obviously Nicoleta Tomsa is impressed too , price i think is well justified.
When I look at Kajal bottles , and heavy metal caps, I have to say such presentation is rare for $210 fragrance.
Like I said I own Kajal Homme , and I need to explore more , Fiddah and Kajal Homme II samples I’m waiting to arrive , Lamar is next in line .
Exquisite giveaway, thanks to Kajal and Nicoleta

  • Beautifully written review! Really like thuis brand but not familiair wijt this one. The combination of the fruiy notes and the base of amber and patchoulli sounds soooo delcious.

Well we do have similar hobby , me and Nicoleta 🙂
Assasin Creed videogames I’m revisiting too.
Whoever bottle designer Kajal hired , he/she did astonishing work. No wonder Nicoleta is considering making the cap, into a pendant.
I have sample of Dahab I received in a FB group swap. Sweet juicy gourmand done really well . Smells natural to me, which is rare for gourmands. Camphorous nuances I do not get.
Dahab is the only Kajal fragrance I know, you can say it’s my favorite one
Thank you Nicoleta and Kajal, such a great giveaway

  • Martin Ford says:

Nectar of opulent fruity overdose fit for the appetite of a god is what got me! From Italy.

  • WaltherP99 says:

Kajal is underrated house , more people need to know their fragrances . I’ve smelled or sampled all , including the new copper looking Homme II. I would gladly wear all , but Yasmina. For sure it’s well made , but is way too indolic , and carnal for my taste .
If i have to rate my favorite 3:
1.Kajal Homme , versatile fragrance, pleasing and elegant .
2.Dahab , truly mouthwatering , and juicy fragrance. Very different compared to Homme , way more playful.
3.Fiddah, changeling one , depending on the weather. When it’s hot it’s sweeter leather with jelly ranchers , but when it’s cold or raining I get also prominent mix of burning tobacco and ashtray.
For the most part i agree with Nicoleta. Still I believe Dahab is mostly linear, what I get in the opening, is what I get in the drydown, or at least 80%. Yes I get the cedar, but it’s supporting, and not one of the main players on the field. Even traces of camphor i don’t get.
Nicoleta review i enjoyed as usual , still our opinion slightly differs , but that’s normal. Different skins, different perception.
Cafleurebon , Nicoleta and Kajal i follow for a long time. Thanks
USA only , hopefully not for long

Great review, I loved the references to the Greek mithology, very interesting!
This fragrance intrigues me so much because of the note of apple, I love this note in my fragrances! The fact that is a “granny smith note” makes it even more interesting.
I’ve never tried any Kajal reference, so this would be my first one!
Thank you for the opportunity, I live in Italy!

I was so impressed by Kajal Homme review on Cafleurebon, and the claims it’s “one of the best masculine fragrances on the market” . Sampled it , and bought it a few days after. Spectacular fragrance , must try for everyone.
Nicoleta Tomsa Is hyping Dahab really well , from “mouth-wateringly tart to deliciously nectar-sweet gourmand” , some mythology ,
to the interesting story I’ve never heard ” “apple” was used in English as a generic term to describe all fruit besides berries”
    Dahab sounds overly intriguing.
    Exciting giveaway , USA

I’ve wanted to try something from Lamar for a long time nor, so I’d love to be the lucky winner! The bottles look like jewels, it would be amazing to own one! I love Nicoleta’s review.. I enjoy so much reading about ancient myths and history, and besides this fragrance looks really mouth watering! Greetings from Italy

  • KMBfragrance says:

The notes sound amazing, particularly Nicoleta’s description of the tart Granny Smith apple note. I haven’t had a chance to try any Kajal fragrances yet. I live in Missouri USA.

  • I know Joorie, because my sister is wearing it quite often. Spicy sweet rose with honey , classy and refined.
Dahab with ripe pasionfruit sweetness, mixed with woody , musky and nutty elements i find opulent , catchy and sophisticated all at the same time. I think i would make a statement wearing Dahab, 100% I would.
    Thanks for the draw
USA, and Germany from time to time

  • Dahab is more complex than some people realize , it’s way more than a topical gourmand. Opening surprised me with how fresh it is, bergamot and Granny Smith apple are zesty and tart. It’s getting sweeter in the base, but there’s no single moment from the first spray, until the drydown, when I can say , ok there’s syrupy sweetness , and being Traditionally trained in Paris Pastry Chef I know syrupy sweetness. Lamar is much sweeter, I would call it syrupy swet , but not Dahab.
In the drydown Dahab is really musky, woody and kind of dusty , retaining its mostly natural fruity sweetness. The smell reminds me of eating Granny Smith Mousse Cake with passion fruit, and non candied slices of the apple on top , while sitting next to just cut Cedar Lumber.
I have a bottle of Lamar , my favorite Kajal, Dahab is my second favorite.
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign
