Jusbox Use/Abuse Review (Antoine Lie) + We Will Rock You Draw

Remi Malek as Freddie Mercury via Daily Express

With the release and accolades for the 2018 bio-pic “Bohemian Rhapsody” followed by Remi Malek’s recent Academy Award for best actor, Freddy Mercury and Queen are riding high on the charts again. I was recently given a  tester bottle of Jusbox Perfume’s magnificent tribute to Freddy Mercury, and the excess of the 1980’s;  Jusbox Use/Abuse.

Arriving in a  78 ml. bottle (to honor the classic 78 vinyl LP’s) with coral colored sides and a cap resembling a vinyl LP record, Use/Abuse by perfume house Jusbox is at once cheeky and chic and ultimately wonderful. Jusbox Perfumes is the brainchild of Italian siblings Andrea and Chiara Valdo (collectively known as “V-Monkey”), and is a tribute to the intersection of music and perfume.

Music and Perfume share a similar and extraordinary power: intensely and yet involuntarily they both have the ability to bring back the most hidden emotions and memories…Thee perfumer, just like the musician, plays notes and accords to compose superb and touching harmonies. Sometimes the language of perfumery may appear difficult and hard to decode and this is why Jusbox makes use of the language of music, usually more familiar, in order to make everyone clearly understand the true essence of its perfumes.” –Jusbox Perfumes

The 80s via whithill puzzles

The 1980’s were a decade of contrasts and profound change; it was a decade of wretched excess with Rolex two-tone watches, BMW’s, sky-high shoulder pads and hair. Jazzercise and Max Headroom. And AIDS; the plague that would touch so many lives and decimate a whole generation of people. As Charles Dickens would say “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.”

Musically the 80’s brought us iconic albums like Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”, Madonna’s “Like A Virgin” and groups like Duran Duran, U2, Tina Turner, Prince, David Bowie, The Police and of course Freddy Mercury and Queen.  Freddy Mercury was the consummate performer; larger than life as he jumped and twirled on stages across the globe, and we sang along to songs that would become a genetic part of the zeitgeist, and ultimately the anthems of our lives; “We Will Rock You”, “We Are The Champions”, “Another One Bites The Dust”, and the modern masterpiece that is “Bohemian Rhapsody”.

Freddie Mercury and Jusbox Use/Abuse apped by Michelyn©

Jusbox Use/Abuse is the perfect olfactive metaphor for the times. Perfumer Antoine Lie has created a floriental that is big, brash, bold, and addictive. From the very first spray, you know that Use/Abuse is a take-no-prisoners perfume; the initial nuclear blast of the tuberose sets the stage for a melange of massive florals that lasts and lasts. Masterfully blended, the tuberose is never shrill or harsh, and retains the beauty of the bloom while dialing back the buttery, animalic facets.

The citrus keeps it fresh and relevant, and the jasmine and peony only add to the beauty. The incense is barely recognizable, but manages to anchor the florals in the here-and-now, and the resinous opoponax and soft musks create a furry and sublime landing pad from which the over-the-top florals rise up and create an almost cosmic dance. In the last few years, the fragrance world has had a veritable onslaught of tuberose jus; everything from the mediocre to the sublime. Jusbox Use/Abuse is solidly on the sublime end of this spectrum, and if you are a tuberose lover, you will most definitely want to own Use/Abuse for yourself. In the words of Freddy Mercury and Queen it will surely “rock you”.

Notes: Tuberose, mandarin orange, incense, jasmine sambac, peony, sandalwood, opoponax, musk.

Disclosure: Thanks so much to Europerfumes for my tester of Use/Abuse. The opinions are my own.

  • I LOVE TUBEROSE!  This sounds like a fantastic scent.  I really do need to try out these fragrances, sounds like Jusbox is knocking it out the park.  In for the 78ml.  The Queen Flash Gordon song always gets me with how over the top it is 🙂  Canada.

Enjoyable review! Sublime tuberose, Freddie Mercury, what more can you want?

I would love the 78 ml bottle of Use / Abuse, I live in the USA. It is hard to choose a favorite Freddie Mercury song. I hace a special affection for Delilah because it shows he was a fellow cat person!

My memories of the 80’s open with one of my first perfumes, Lagerfeld Chloe.

  • Wow! Fabulous review. Huge fan of Tuberose, this sounds right up my alley. Here’s my favorite part.

Thanks for the generous giveaway, I live in the U.S. and would choose the travel spray set.

My favorite Freddie Mercury song is Killer Queen.

  • Thanks for the chance to win and nice review. Antoine Lie can do no wrong with tuberose. I adore his Vierges et Toreros (although that's not a dominant Tuberose) and of course Night Flower at Eris Perfumes.

Would like to win a full bottle of Use/Abuse

Favourite memory from eighties – World Cup 1982 with Rummenigge for Germany, Platini for France, Zoff and Paolo Rossi for Italy, Zico for Brazil, Maradona for Argentina, Blokhin for USSR.

As for Queen song – Bycicle race 😉

    Greetings from Switzerland

  •  Oh Wow…Take me to the 80's please! I realy want to small this, the notes sound promising with the Tuberose, Incense, Jasmine and Sandalwood. The design is magnificent and distinctive. Hadar from NY USA

  • Jusbox has some very interesting ideas for fragrance.  I love that they are blazing new roads.  It's exciting!  Best part of the article was the walk down the 80's memory lane for me.  Anytime I think of the eighties, I smell hairspray!  🙂 Hopefully, a wiff of Use/Abuse will put a different olfactive thought in my mind.

"Under Pressure" is my favorite Queen song.  I would love to win the travel sprays. Thanks! In the USA

  • fazalcheema says:

Antoine Lie is a great choice because he has proven himself to be a master of abstract. I dont think i have smelled a floriental from Antoine Lie before. My favor. from The Queen is The Show Must Go On. I am in US.

  • Wow, this sounds really good. The Jusbox house concept is really nice and i love Antoine Lie creations. My favourite song from Queen is definitely “don’t stop me now”. I would love to try this fragrance so i prefere the “Use Abuse” bottle. Thanks for the chance, i am in the EU.

  • I want to be addicted!!  This fragrance sounds great.  I also love the name Use Abuse.    My favorite song is of course, Bohemian Rahpsody.  USA

  • bigscoundrel says:

Great setup by highlighting the intense decade that was the 80s and then tying in the modern Use/Abuse fragrance. The best Freddie Mercury song is Bohemian Rhapsody. That travel set looks incredible. I’m in the USA.

  • Lillyhollowayblog says:

Tuberose is so appropriate for the 80's. It was go big or go home. If Robert says this one is 80's big that's all I need to hear.

Pressure was my favorite from Freddie Mercury but Bohemian Rhapsody was my favorite Queen song. I live in the US.

  • 80's? Yep, I remember the shoulder pads: blouse, blazer, then coat! We looked like football players. LOL!!!  I'd love to win the Travel Set, thank you! USA

  • I enjoyed reading about the 80s music. Loved how the fragrance was described as something that will ‘rock you’. I would love to win the 78ml bottle.

    I live in USA.

  • I love The 80s,I love The music from 80 and I'm în love with tuberouse. I'm în for The 78 ml.

    I'm from E. U.

  • gunmetal24 says:

I love how Robert explains the trajectory of the tuberose and how its anchored by its supporting ingredients. Admittedly, I still don't see the connection with the 80s but maybe this perfume will remind me of Dior's Poison? I would love to win the travel set. Based in Canada.

  • gunmetal24 says:

Forgot to add, my favourite memory of the 80s are cartoons! Especially Thundercats! 😀

  • I loved the review because it brought me back to me teenage years – the 80s, and the music which was in the radio all the time during those days. My favorite Freddie Mercury song is "It's a kind of Magic" – was even the first "modern" music clip I saw on TV and i was blown away back then.
    I live in Europe/Germany

  • I loved Robert’s review because it touched the duality between sound and scent, which I find to be absolutely true, and also for setting the background for the 80’s, which was one of the most glorious decades of the modern era in terms of music, with names and examples of musicians. I am curious about This Jusbox juice in order to smell what a modern interpretation of an 80’s flowerbomb smells like, so I would like to try my luck for the bottle. Thank you! From Romania, EU.

  • Forgot to mention my Queen song, since I wasn’t born in the 80’s. It is Love of my life, which I actually know from the 90’s, since I was a kid.

  • Gabriela Gorea says:

Robert’s review was very nice, and I really liked how he described all the perfume notes. My favorite part is “From the very first spray, you know that Use/Abuse is a take-no-prisoners perfume”.

I would love to win the 78ml bottle of Use/Abuse, I live in EU.

My favorite Freddie Mercury song is I want to break free.

  • olleriksson says:

Tuberose is my current addiction. I've started blind buying tuberose scents because I just can't get enough of it! So excited to try this scent as well.

Great review where you really get a feeling for how the scent is composed. Loving the "cosmic dance" description!

My favorite Freddie song is Under Pressure, with David Bowie.

I'm in Florida, US and would love the full bottle of Use/Abuse thank you so much!

  • Loredana O says:

I love Bohemian rhapsody and for sure I will love to Use Abuse from Jusbox…tuberose is one of my favorite fragrance. I'm from EU.

I love Bohemian rhapsody and for sure I will love to Use Abuse from Jusbox…tuberose is one of my favorite note. I'm from EU.

  • fleurdetilleul says:

I love it how Robert introduces us to this perfume by speaking of the times that inspired it. I was not born during the 80s so those times are foreign to me, except the music. My favourite song by Queen Is I Want to Break Free.

I would like to win the full bottle, please! The travel sprays would be great too since I haven't had the opportunity to test this brand. So…either one is perfect actually. Thank you!

    I live in EU.

  • Really like the packaging of this house. And the accompanying stories associated with the fragrance name. I've read so much about this house lately I'd love the travel sprays should I be chosen. US

  • What a great concept of using music to inspire perfumes. My favorite scents are tuberose and I live in the USA

fat bottomed girls is a fun song by Queen

  • I very like the review, and this fragrance also sounds very nicely from the base of the review. I have born 1989 so I have not any memory from the 80s. But my favorite Queen song is Princes of the Universe. If I would win my choice is the 78 ml bottle. Thank you for the chance. I live in the EU.

  • d3m0lici0n says:

It sounds really cool! A tuberose perfume created by Antoine Lie, I really like his work and would love his floriental

Ah the 80s, I was running, playing soccer, jumping around! No cell phones, no internet, we were free kids…

I'd love to win the bottle please. I live in the US

    Thanks

  • Great review and the scent sounds wonderful.  I enjoy tubrose but think I am enjoy jasmine and sandlewood more so it sounds like a good blend of all three.  I am not familair with the perfumer Mr. Lie so always looking forward to trying new things.  I live in the USA and would love the bottle.  My favorite Queen song is under pressure (though it also has Bowie).  My favorite strickly Queen song is Bohemian Rhapsody.  Thanks for the draw.

  • damianachi says:

I think Freddie Mercury would have loved a perfume starring a heady tuberose. This was a wonderful review and I especially enjoyed the inspiration of Queen and 80s music, my favorite band and decade, respectively. I would love to win the travel set and I live in the USA. Thank you!

  • redwheelbarrow says:

Wow this sounds amazing! The comparison between music and fragrance is spot on as far as building memories and feelings. I would love to win the full bottle of Use/Abuse for those big florals. I love the thought of the jasmine just hanging out in the background. I'm really going to need to get my hands on this one. I am a little embarrased to say that I was introduced to Queen via Wayne's World. Ha! But I was instantly hooked by the operatic splendor that is Bohemian Rhapsody and my love for the band took off from there. To this day I request Queen be played when I go to the dentist because their music just brings me to a happy place. I am in the USA.

  • Lovely review I went back to the years of innocence, my teenage years when everything seemed so easy and nice….. I loved Freddy Mercury I still love his voice and his unique exceptional style. My favorite song is The Show Must Go On.

I would love to try all perfumes from this house and I am in for the 78ml.

I live in EU, thank you for the draw!

  • DulciusExAsperis says:

Great review – I love the reference to the powerhouses of the '80s and I am definitely a tuberose lover. My favorite memory of the' 80s is getting up early on Saturdays to eat sugary cereal and watch cartoons with my siblings, all piled together on our couch. I'd love the travel set. I live in the US.

  • I adore tuberose fragrances and love how that note is described in this perfume – " the initial nuclear blast of the tuberose sets the stage for a melange of massive florals that lasts and lasts".

I like Freddy Mercury was used in this review – We Will Rock You, indeed!

I would choose the 78 ml bottle – it really sounds gorgeous.

    I live in the USA.

  • citizenkage says:

Fantastic review! I agree, there is nothing like music and smells that can bring you back to a certain place and time in your life. It happens to me so often when I hear a song I forgot about or smell a fragrance I haven't smelled in a long time. I'll be blasted to the past and memories that I forgot about start popping up in my head. It is a beautiful thing. I love many Queen songs but my favorite would probably be "Somebody to Love." I would choose the 78ml bottle and I live in the USA.

  • I had the best of queen in the 80s, and still enjoy it, and can't decide on a favorite, they are all great!  this review made me think of highschool! I would love to try this tuberose scent, as i'm looking for a floral scent for the summer.  I would love Use/Abuse, I'm in the US.  Thank you for the draw

  • I have wanted to try this house for a while. I love tuberose; so, it was hard making a hypothetical choice, but I would go with the sampler because then I could try all of the grooviness. I live in USA. Queen was a bit before my time, but, of course, we wailed it in the car when it came on the classic rock radio station. I think in the 80s we listened to classic rock but also to Duran Duran, Flock of Seagulls and other cool modern music.

  • Yum yum. This fragrance sounds loud and proud but still skillfully blended. I am picky about my tuberose wcents but this sounds right up my alley. I live in the USA and would pick the full botttle. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • Not a harsh tuberose? Okay, I wanna it! Freddie Mercury is a legend. I love Queen music soo much and haven never smelled anything from this brand and they have such great concept. Would love to win a travel spray set. I am in Germany

  • Great review by Robert, thanks for the hard work. Yes the 80s was all about being bold and brash. Tuberose done right is amazing in fragrances. My favorite memories of the 80s were all of John Hughes movies…legendary. I would love to win the 78 ml tester of Jusbox Use/Abuse. I live in CA, USA.

  • Jusbox Use/Abuse is the perfect olfactive metaphor for the times. Perfumer Antoine Lie has created a floriental that is big, brash, bold, and addictive. …..Masterfully blended, the tuberose is never shrill or harsh, and retains the beauty of the bloom while dialing back the buttery, animalic facets…

Nice job Robert – one of the best reviews lately ! I only hope the incense will be more pronounced on my skin – one of my favorite notes. The Jusbox bottles are really nice especially the vinyl cap 🙂  Love 80's music , but not a big Queen fan.Madonna , Michael Jackson i adore.Full bottle of Use and Abuse is my choice.

Back and forth between USA and Scotland. 1 week in US -> 1 week in Scotland (EU) , and so on.

  • Ivan.napoleon says:

My fav memories 80s music and of course! Madonna.

Id love to win a full bottle. Amazing mix of notes. Miami Florida Thanks

  • I do associate 80's mostly with Michael Jackson , Paula Abdul and Whitney Houston , and not with Queen. Don't get me wrong I do like quite a few of their hits , but they are not my favorite 80's band. Justbox house are rather unconventional right? Bottle size , concept – bold moves. My sister is a big tuberose fan . If I happen to win , I'll give her the bottle as a gift. Beautiful opportunity thank you. In US

  • Great review! I LOVE 80'S MUSIC!! This fragrance sounds wonderful based on the description. I have a lot of favorite memories from the 80's, but one in particular was the release of Prince's Purple Rain album. It was the first cassette tape I ever owned. Thank you for the chance at winning a full bottle. Buffalo, NY.-US.

  • Very good review my favorite song is bohemian rahpsody I would love to try the sample travel spray set I live this brand and how it's inspired by music.

    USA

  • NiceVULady says:

Robert makes it sound amazing.  Use/Abuse is an intersting name given the times it celebrates.  Queen was definitely a phenomena.  Would love to try this.  Thanks for a most interesting review and thanks for a generous draw. I'd like to try the sample travel spray set.

  • Interesting review, I absolutely love Queen and the description of this perfume. I have Queen on vinyl and my favourite song Bohemian Rapsody. I would love the chance to try the sample travel spray set. (Romania)

My fav songs are Love of my life, Don't stop me now and Somebody to love.

I miss the big, brash, over the top Alexis Morell Carrington Dexter Colby 1980s! What a fun decade with all its great music and cheesy events like Hands Across America. This fragrance with its jasmine and tuberose suits the 80s. My favorite 80s event was Live Aid. Also seeing David Bowie in concert. And sleeping in 24-hour porn theaters in Times Square before it became all Disney-ed up.

I would select the travel set. I live in the USA.

  • The concept of this brand is awesome! I love anything queen so I need to try this and they have a few others that sound awesome too! Bohemian rhapsody is my go to karaoke song lots of good times associated with it! Thanks for the giveaway and I am in the USA in AZ

  • Uncle1979 says:

I'm not familiar with this house , but i like the idea a fragrance "rocking" me . Big floriental with citrus,  incense and some resins = I'm curious.

Grew up with hip-hop , funk , r'n'b , soul , jazz and some pinches of pop. Yes Queen = iconic band , but I much prefer Michael Jackson and Prince .

Thank you for the great draw.
