JusBox Perfumes Visionary Eye Review (Dominique Ropion) 2022+ Bowie in Berlin Giveaway

JusBox Perfumes Visionary Eye by Karl

“The tension there is terrific, and it forced me to re-evaluate my position in any given society.” David Bowie.

The idea of escapism, change, questioning of one’s identity encapsulated in a watershed moment is something quite magical and challenging. Opening up to new possibilities and treading a new path is both nerve wracking  and exciting. JusBox Perfumes founded by Andrea and Chiara Valdo is an Italian brand who interprets eras and musical genres that evoke strong emotions. Their latest release for 2022 is Visionary Eye, a perfume where the note of Iris is reimagined through the lens of master perfumer Dominique Ropion (IFF) and inspired by David Bowie’s time spent in Berlin in the 1970s, where he reinvented himself both artistically and musically.

Andrea and Chiara Valdo’s relationship with Dominique Ropion is well established (he was the perfumer for Live N Loud, Feather Supreme, Beat Café and more). However, this is the first Iris centric perfume of the collection and a unique take on a note, which can sometimes come off as overly powdery and melancholic. Here it is transformed by Monsieur Ropion using Iris (Orris Ultimate MD LMR) as the central theme producing a fragrance of power, with both light and shade. Taking a traditional ingredient and turning it into a new age and adventurous experience must have been an arduous task and with Visionary Eye the iris has been transformed into something truly special.

Bowie in Berlin

David Bowie in Berlin approximately 1976 via reddit

JusBox Perfumes Visionary Eye feels futuristic and explosive but at the same time comforting and it seems very experimental. Given that Bowie came to Berlin to reconnect and begin anew the fusion of his music and the creativity of JusBox’s vision here using an avant-garde blend of raw materials seems appropriate. Berlin in the  mid-late 1970’s was going through a metamorphosis and the city’s artistic and cultural identity shifted substantially. They say the eyes are the windows to the soul and the name of Visionary Eye is fantastic name for a scent which reflects the beauty of fluidity in terms of artistic license and gender. JusBox Visionary Eye inhabits the ideal of compromising a plethora of hues on the colour spectrum.  White light communicates a dramatic and abstract effect and one can associate it with the new sense of freedom Bowie felt, his recordings with Iggy Pop and the creation of Ziggy Stardust. Far from being linear Visionary Eye symbolises experimentation and unconstrained vision.

This fragrance feels incredibly atmospheric. The opening of bergamot, wormwood and white thyme from Spain produces an aromatic sensation akin to absinthe. This is offset in the heart by cinnamon and Ceylon LMR where spices dance into our consciousness. The note of lavender is deftly introduced and juxtaposes stunningly with the heat and sweetness of the cinnamon. These notes interweave subtly with the orris, which is buttery and smooth. The base of sandalwood, vanilla and musk beautifully compliments the heart and cocoons us in a silky embrace.

Karl in Berlin 11/2/2022 !!!

Visionary Eye is a transitional scent. The heart of Iris is a precious and well-known ingredient and tried and true in perfumery. However, here it feels different. There is a depth and vibrancy to it and Monsieur Ropion takes us into a new dimension fusing the traditional and futuristic. The creaminess is evident it feels decadent, but the surrounding notes bring across a dynamism and spark which is very surprising. By using aromatic and spicy accords the effect is multidimensional and creates a ground-breaking aesthetic essence – one I have never experienced before and the choice to link it with the genius of David Bowie is telling.

Notes: Bergamot, Wormwood, White Thyme (Spain), Cinnamon, Ceylon LMR, Lavender, Iris (Orris Ultimate MD LMR), Sandalwood, Vanilla accord, Musk. *Cruelty Free.

  • I have sadly not tried any Jusbox perfumes but this sounds incredibly wonderful. Visionary eye seems like such a masterpiece with its notes of lavender, white Thyme, sandalwood and vanilla. I would love to try this magical juice. From CT, USA.

This give away is right up my alley. I love jusbox and Dominic ropion. I have been wanting to try this perfume badly. I love iris and this sounds like a gem. Please let me win!!! I live in Indiana

  • My favorite from this house is Beat Cafe and I would love to test more from Jusbox as I feel that the other fragrances have great potential as well. Visionary Eye sounds interesting. Thank you very much!

  • Kr1ms0nk1ng says:

Always evolving, Bowie’s personas and albums transcended eras and embraced the obscure and future in a way not dissimilar to Mr. Ropion’s fragrances (looking at you, Alien).

His reflection that, “White light communicates a dramatic and abstract effect and one can associate it with the new sense of freedom Bowie felt” feels more evocative of my favorite Bowie album, Station to Station (before the Berlin Trilogy), but certainly the statement hits home.

No experience yet with the brand, but appreciative of the opportunity.

Would love to see a fragrant representation of R.E.M. – something to conjure their Athen’s roots mixed with Peter Buck’s fascination with Seattle – let’s say Lifes Rich Pageant meets Monster, perhaps?

    California based.

I enjoyed the review. I am a fan of Ropion. Iris is a tricky note and I was happy to see the new take on Iris mixing it with Lavender and sandalwood. I am looking forward to trying this one. Thank you for the review. USA

  • The unique fascinating and beautiful notes of this fragrance spark my interest. I don’t have a favorite JusBox Perfumes but I would really love to try out Visionary Eye. I would love to see an Enya perfume. I adore her music. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

  • JusBox Perfumes Visionary Eye seems to play tribute to German style of perfumery. I have tried some German brands that are not sold outside the country and I could not help but notice that JusBox Perfumes Visionary Eye’s composition would not be out of place if it was released by a German brand as this perfume is inspired by Berlin’s influence on Bowie. I am in US.

  • Monsieur Ropion Always seems to be visionary, and Bowie was such an iconic figure. The scent sounds interesting and special. In maryland.

  • Unfortunately, I haven’t tried anything from Jusbox Perfumes yet, but I love the concept. Karl did a fantastic job with reviewing this fragrance. I would love to try it. I live in Houston Texas.

  • BostonScentGuy says:

I love the sound of this–it seems both elegant and aromatic. I was interested to hear the dichotomies it straddles–comforting and futuristic…modern and traditional. All the notes are favorites as well–a aromatized orris with a creamy, vanilla drydown? Sounds wonderful! I haven’t tried any JusBox scents. I’m a big Sufjan Stevens, and his music (at least the oldest stuff) is so atmospheric and conjures up images of frosty midwestern winters, pine, wet wool…would be an interesting scent! Thanks for the draw–I’m in the US (Colorado).

A beautiful description by Karl really like the notes especially Cinnamon, Iris, Sandalwood and Vanilla. My favourite from this house is Beat Cafe. Thanks a million

Thanks a lot from the UK

  • I have tried this fragrance and it entered my wishlist. So so good, smell super modern and put together! It slightly reminded me of le bain guerbois new wave but it’s less powdery and a more masculine lining. So good, and super long lasting, also the singer associated with is David bowie what Can I ask more?
    Greetings from Italy

  • I’ve discovered Jusbox some months ago and I think their approch is really interesting.
Really curious about this one, as it is described to be “atmospheric”.
    I don’t have a favourite Jusbox perfume.

  • katyakotovskaya says:

I am not familiar with this brand yet, but the description seemed very tempting to me. It is curious that one can talk about the depth of the composition and avant-garde notes both in the case of perfume and in relation to Bowie’s music! EU

  • What sparked my interest was, ” The opening of bergamot, wormwood and white thyme from Spain produces an aromatic sensation akin to absinthe”. I haven’t smelled any from the house to have a favorite and I have no preference for a musician inspired perfume. US

  • JusBox Perfumes issuch a cool brand. I don’t own any, but loved the samples. This one sounds cool. New Jersey, USA

  • I love iris, I love Bowie and Berlin, and I love the idea of an “incredibly atmospheric” iris perfume about Bowie and Berlin 🙂 My favourite Jusbox is Cheeky Smile. I’d like to see a perfume about the 1990s electronic music group Autchre… I can wait 🙂

    In the EU.

  • Boris Hernandez says:

Inspired by Bowie. That says it all.
Considering how massively popular and how dynamic David’s music was and still is, this fragrance has a lot to say.
I never have owned any JusBox fragrance, but hopefully, this would be my first one.

  • Iris is a favorite note and it has been so many times before. I love that the reviewer states that this is a different take on iris even they haven’t tried before, that intrigues me. I also love Bowie. I have my favorite from their line Feel n Chill also by Ropian I believe. I want the brand to take on bands like Pearl Jam or the Chili Peppers. Thanks for the draw. I am in VA, USA.

  • Unfortunately I haven’t tried any Jusbox perfumes but JusBox Visionary Eye sounds lovely. I went to their website from the link provided, but then the link for JusBox Visionary Eye gave an error – I guess they haven’t updated their website yet. Karl compliments it by saying it is both traditional and futuristic. I love the notes, all traditional and used in many perfumes, but I am assuming blended in a novel way to create JusBox Visionary Eye. Would love to try it out. Thanks – I am from the USA.

  • Great review by Karl. I am a huge Jusbox Perfumes fan since I tried Cheeky Smile. I love the creativity they have and the quality of their ingredients.
Iris or Orris is a note that I love in perfumery and something I make sure to have on many fragrances I want to own. Visionary Eye is something I want to try and perhaps add to my collection, I hope I win this giveaway since that would be a perfect precristhmas present for me.
Ropion only makes masterpieces and this is surely one.
    USA here.

  • I don’t know JusBox but Visionary Eye sounds like a great introduction. I love that it’s described as being absinthe-like! Thanks for the review and giveaway!

  • Why, how this perfume speaks to me. It seems as if it was personally made for me. The Big Dom is one of my favourite perfumers out there, and based on Karl’s review, this would be another star in my collection. More on Karl, I really admire the way he paints with his words…

    I live in EU, Sweden.

  • wandering_nose says:

Millions of thanks to Karl for this epic review! I have been a major fan of the 70s and 80s Berlin since my teenage years, fascinated by the revolution that happened there in those days, and somewhat organically. I am also a big fan of David Bowie, whose days spent in Berlin made him even more appealing to me, both as a person and artist. While reading Karl’s review, I felt like I am sinking into the atmospheric vibes of Berlin’s streets and clubs, feeling the freedom and the urge to reinvent myself, just like Monsieur Ropion has reinvented the amazing note of iris for this new Jusbox Perfumes creation. Experimentation, openness to the new, embracing both the turmoil and the excitement that change brings about. The notes used are singing to my soul, I would be beyond delighted to have the opportunity to try a perfume that is both nostalgic and dynamic. I haven’t had a chance to try Jusbox fragrances as of yet, I remember how Carlos (forever in our hearts) spoke about them with passion and that piqued my interest. I would like to see grunge music made into a perfume, gut feeling tells me it would not leave me indifferent… Thank you from the EU

  • Interesting set of notes, as diverse as Bowie himself. I’m intrigued to smell the thyme, cinnamon and iris together. I’m in the US, thank you for the draw!

  • I love iris and I’m really intrigued by this new treatment of the note that turns it into a vibrant powerhouse encompassing light and shade facets. The addition of wormwood, thyme, lavender and cinnamon seem to round out the iris and create more depth. This time period for Bowie was indeed transitional retiring his thin white duke persona. I’ve not tried any JusBox perfumes before. I would love to see a fragrance made to honor Jeff Buckley. MD, USA.

  • Went through our Jusbox sample set just yesterday.
This sounds like another winner from Jusbox
    Oklahoma USA

  • Interesting that this is a 78 ml bottle. I love Mr. Ropion’s creations. I’m going to pick up Aimez Moi this weekend in the old bottle. I’d love to see Rosie Ledet or Queen Ida (both do Zydeco) created in a perfume. Trailblazing (Queen Ida), exuberant, cheerful, a bit naughty (Rosie). My son went to a Queen Ida concert with his late girlfriend and it was of the best nights of his life, they were 18 and everyone there was “old”. They danced with everyone. Im quite curious of this Iris note from the description. I need to check this line, I’m not familiar with them. Yes please, add some Zydeco to the line up. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • In the past year or so I liked spicy fragrances more and more (masterpiece: Eris Scorpio Rising). This one sounds like a balanced spice market to my liking as well, I hope the dry down doesn’t develop too sweet for me.
I came to know and like the sweet leather liquor of Jusbox’s Black Powder.
Please let me win this to Germany, thank you for the draw!

  • The association of music and perfume is very interesting, and this beautiful review made the brand even more intereting.
Unfortunately I have not tried anything from the brand.
Would love to try something associated with rap music

    Riccardo, Italy EU

  • I love iris and anything that focuses on it spikes my interest. When it’s described as atmospheric and fusing the traditional and futuristic together…I’m interested in this one.
I have smelled just 2 Jusbox and the favorite is Black Powder.
I’d love to see Depeche Mode translated into a perfume, given how complex their music is and how much it evolves from album to album.
    I’m in the EU.

  • I would very much like to try how the iris ingredient fells different in Jusbox Visionary Eye. I would like to see Amy Winehouse inspiration into a perfume. From EU.

  • This sounds ahead of it’s time! I was very interested based on your description of a futuristic iris. I haven’t tried any perfumes from this brand yet, and I would love to see a Björk Perfume. Thanks for the review, writing from the EU.

  • Thanks Karl for a great review. Sadly I’ve never been to Berlin even though, I live quite close. I was born in 1980’s so I didn’t experience changes in the city. I was also to small to remember metamorphosis that my country, Poland, went through at the same time nevertheless Karl’s review pictures the phase quite well. I love that the scent reflects of “the beauty of fluidity in terms of artistic license and gender”. As for the scent itself – the notes are interesting, as is Bowie’s music and life. Myself I’d love to smell a perfume that personified Sufian Steven’s “Mystery of love”. Unfortunately I haven’t had a chance to smell any JusBox perfumes but I’d definitely would like to try Good Morning and Feel ‘N’ Chill. I live in Poland, EU.

  • This definitely sounds different, based on the review with the iris note, not being particularly powdery. Especially mixed with wormwood, and white thyme (not sure if I have smelled this note before) I have yet to try this house, but the fragrance that was attached to Nirvana sounded really good. I would like to see them make a fragrance inspired by Stereolab. Thanks for the draw! In the US.

  • I love Bowie’s run of albums from Station to Station through Let’s Dance, with the Berlin trilogy right in the middle. I also really dig the idea of interpreting musical genres or periods as a fragrance. Both make me very curious how JusBox Perfumes interpreted Bowie’s Berlin period through an avant-garde take on Iris, including the wormwood and white thyme combination, which strikes me as unusual and daring. I’d love to try Visionary Eye. Thanks for the review, Karl.

I’m in the midwest, USA. I haven’t tried any JusBox Perfumes, but I love the concept. I think Roxy Music’s discography would make a really interesting perfume; open with edgy glam rock, move into a heart of polished art-rock, and settle into a glossy, sophisticated heart of arch lounge.

  • Thanks for another great review Karl!

Jusbox is one of those fragrance houses that has been on my radar for a while, but that I have yet to experience!

I didn’t know that David Bowie went to Berlin to re-ignite his creativity, but I am not suprised. Berlin has been my favourite city for decades. Every summer I would be joining the Love Parade and meet the most incredible people. I completely understand why he chose this city.

Daft Punk’s Homework and Discovery are my all-time favourite music albums. I would be very interested to smell a perfume based on the artists or these iconic albums.

    Greetings from the UK!

  • “Is there an inflection point in modern music history or musician you would like to see made into a perfume.”

If such possibility even exists, Michael Jackson inspired fragrances would draw everyone’s attention.
I do appreciate when owners and perfumers both think outside of the box . Interesting brand i have to explore more …. finally . Beat Cafe i discovered at the tailor store while working with a client. The composition impressed me so much , I had to buy it it too.
From Visionary Eye i expect really good sweet, and aromatic iris, and it’s important that just like Beat Cafe , is made by one of the best perfumers in the world , Dominique Ropion.
Thank you Karl Topham , JusBox Perfumes
    USA

  • What an interesting article !!
Can’t say I love all kinds of iris, but “feels futuristic and explosive but at the same time comforting and it seems very experimental”- sounds amazing!
    Haven’t tried any from JusBox.
    USA

  • The nostalgic and contemplative iris in Visionary Eye sounds absolutely fabulous. I am also curious about how cinnamon, lavender and vanilla could blend with it. Possibly in a sultrier, deeper concoction?
I would like the wild 80’s to be made into a perfume. Specifically, all the hair metal bands with their flamboyant glam and bombastic sound.
I have not yet had the chance to smell any JusBox frag.
    Thanks! From the EU.

  • I don’t know much about David Bowie to be honest, but I know Jubox , quite a funky and interesting brand with different size bottles, design. I like all the unique things they do bring to the table. Of course not every fragrance is appealing to me , but Green Bubble, Night Flow , Beat Cafe , Golden Serenade, Siren & Sailors are all really good.
In Visionary Eye I like the sophisticated look on iris, the subtle cinnamon sweetness, and the musky cuddling touch.
My favorite Jusbox fragrance is Golden Serenade
Lionel Richie music resonates with me , how about some new fragrance related to “Can’t Slow Down” , his best album?
    Thanks for the draw
    USA

  • What sparks my interest based in Karl’s review is that Iris is my favourite note. So I’m always looking for new interpretation of it. And I must say that this one seems to be faboulus. A transitional, unconstrained, with contrast, Bowie inspired fragrance made by Dominique Ropion tick all the boxes. Thank you very much for this opportunity. From France – EU.

  • Im all for David Bowie! Really excited that he’s the inspo. I live in EU. Didnt have a chance to try this brand yet. I want a Lana Del Rey inspired perfume for sure!

  • I love Dominique Ropion’s work and altough I have not tried anything from Jusbox, I am sure that he did a great job on this one and it’s going to be a hit.
    I am in Europe. Thanks!

  • Iris based fragrances are amazing, especially paired with lavender. Thyme and wormwood are some of my favorite notes in aromatic scents. I’m a fan of Macy Gray and would love to see a fragrance from Jusbox featuring her music. Thanks for another wonderful review and draw. Mich USA

  • Regis Monkton says:

I am interested in trying this fragrance for multiple reasons, e.g. Dominique Ropion is one of my favorite perfumers, and when Karl says “By using aromatic and spicy accords the effect is multidimensional and creates a ground-breaking aesthetic essence”. Also, I’m intrigued to try it because Karl describes it as ‘atmospheric’. I own a discovery set for Jusbox perfumes, but I haven’t had enough time to try any of them yet (I’m looking forward to trying them though). I live in the U.S.A.

  • sephrenia300 says:

Lovely review Karl! What sparks my interest based on Karl’s review is how he describes the scent as an unusual iris perfume in that it’s powerful and vibrant, as opposed to the usual overly powdery and somber expressions of the note. Iris is one of my favorite notes and while I very much enjoy the traditional iris perfumes, I am excited to try this new, adventurous, and “visionary” take on it.!

I don’t have a favorite JusBox Perfumes yet as I haven’t tried any. I would love to see Billie Holiday made into a perfume! I live in the US.

  • wallygator88 says:

    Thanks for the review Karl.
I love David Bowie and never imagined that the note of iris could be associated with him. I love the luminosity of this fragrance, with the notes of bergamot, wormwood, white thyme and musk.

I have not heard of this brand before.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Music, touches, feelings from adifferent timeline. Unique bottles and timeline to be inspired from.
Karl Topham take on Visionary Eye made me think of making Fluffy and Moist Cinnamon Bundt Cake , and later on eating it , while in Berlin’s Tiergarten Park , enjoying the scent of iris there .
I know he’s no longer part of Cafleurebon, but aftet watching Sebastian Yara Green Bubble video for Cafleurebon, I bought Jusbox discovery set from Europerfumes. It was just $38 for nice box and the samples. Well worth it. Some high end over $500 per bottle niche houses do not have presentation like this one.
In my Pastry Chef mind I do believe the two best Jusbox fragrances are Beat Cafe and Golden Serenade
I’d like to see made into a perfume …. Michael Jackson
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign

  • Jusbox Visionary Eye i have not smelled, but Black Powder i own . Dense, dark and sweet fruity leather , with high compliment factor. I’m a vain guy, and Black Powder is one of my most complimented fragrances ever.
I wonder how good Visionary Eye is, interesting fragrance i need to get my hands on. I like the premium iris , the vanilla and sandalwood.
Bell Biv DeVoe perfume I’ll immediately try

The Jusbox bottles are really nice especially the vinyl cap . What i like about the brand is the fact they follow their own path , and do not follow trends .
My favorite Jusbox is Siren & Sailors.Peachy , boozy , musky scent inspired by the late Amy Winehouse RIP.
Relaxing artistic iris fragrances are right up my alley, and I’m a fan of Dominique Ropion , I’d love to win Visionary Eye

I loved Karl’s review of Jusbox Perfumes Visionary Eye. I haven’t tried anything from Jusbox Perfumes yet, but I love how their fragrances are all associated and inspired by music. Especially since this fragrance is made by the brilliant master perfumer Dominique Ropion and is inspired by the legendary musician David Bowie who I truly love. I love how Karl describes this Iris fragrance with so much spicy and aromatic depth. I would like to see Steve Perry made into a perfume when he had his first album Infinity with Journey in 1978.

  • Karl!!! ❤️❤️❤️ Most Excellent review!!!
I’ve not found a favorite JusBox scent yet, though from what I’ve seen, the founders of this brand are Really Really Really good & nice guys. I’m definitely pulling for them! Orris is a favorite of mine, so perhaps I should try this one! Your review is extremely convincing! Thank you & ÇaFleureBon (as always) for such an Amazingly generous opportunity!!! ❤️ USA
