Jusbox Night Flow Review (Julien Rasquinet) + Rap and Perfume Draw

Jusbox Nightflow review

The reptilian brain of New Yorkers is wired with electrocharged nightlife. Whether we were physically there or not, the noise, the lights, the glamor, the heat of a hundred scenes are inside us. The energy of the 1970s takes up a good deal of psychic real estate. Jusbox Perfumes captured punk in No Rules and rock in my favorite perfume from the brand, Live n Loud. Last year Jusbox tied up the 70s with Night Flow, inspired by early days of rap. Night Flow is the steady bass beat that flows throughout the night no matter what is playing on top of it. After a burst of fruit, like the first bite into that 70s favorite Freshen Up bubble gum (if you know, you know), leather is Julien Rasquinet ’s deep, thumping note in Jusbox Night Flow. The opening is dry like the tobacco in a pack of unsmoked cigarettes, or the patchouli in the air of a neighborhood oil store. The party wears on, and the vibe magically changes. Now, on top of the leather, is the luscious, sweet taste of reapplied lip gloss or your third sweet drink, both a little hazy. That’s the raspberry note that Rasquinet gave Night Flow. Still, throughout is the leather you want to keep going all night.

Drake wore Drakkar Noir

Jusbox Night Flow reminded me of Tom Ford Tuscan Leather, but younger and more alive. Thinking about the Tom Ford scent led my mind to the Drake song “Tuscan Leather”. Fragrance is important to Drake; he has a Drakkar Noir bottle tattooed on his shoulder and his original Instagram account was @Drakkardnoir. Even if the leather hum of Night Flow and Drake’s song name is a coincidence, the link between rap and fragrance is real. I knew there must be more perfume references in rap going all the way back.

It was a piece of the hip-hop uniform in the early days, like sneakers and chains. In the 1980s, hip-hop embraced American designers, clothes and colognes. Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick rhymed about Polo cologne as part of their morning routine in “La Di Da Di” (Snoop Dogg turned it into Davidoff Cool Water in his 1993 cover,) In the 90s, music, clothes and fragrance matured. Jay-Z ’s fragrance was French. New millennium, Lil’ Kim and her girls claimed their spot in a cloud of Bvlgari.

What CREED perfume did Diddy bring into David Arpels of Symrise to recreate

I proudly have a bottle of Queen Latifah “Queen” on my shelf (Steve DeMarcado now of OK Fragrances). Even if it’s the only hip hop celebrity scent I own, there are others out there, with a lot of back stories. Legend has it that Diddy walked into a large Flavor and Fragrance Co. ‘s New York Office with a bottle of his favorite perfume, Creed Millésime Impérial asking them to make him something just like it. Mary J. Blige partnered with African-American owned Carol’s Daughter for her tribute to women, their lives and every day struggles in My Life.

Travis Scott and Byredo, “Space Rage TRAVX” review

The rap celebrity fragrances have slid into the niche perfume world. Last year the collaboration between Travis Scott and Byredo, “Space Rage TRAVX” sold out in hours, and, again when Byredo restocked the fragrance and candle luxury stores a month later.

Whether you get your fragrance at a drugstore, department store, through television shopping or a chic little niche boutique, you are tapping into the vibe of hip-hip.

Great review! A lot of great history and culture has come from hip hop. Favorite hip-hop/rap song would have to be “Keep Ya Head Up” by 2pac. From USA!

  • I really enjoyed the information regarding perfumes being name in rap and hip-hop songs. BTW, Byrdeo’s collaboration with Travis is not a brand new perfume but Pulp repackaged in case some are curious about it. I am in US.

  • Julesinrose says:

What a great review!! I had NO idea that Drake had that tattoo. Awesome! I hadn’t given much thought to the olfactory aspect of rap culture. Cool. I do happen to have a bottle of Queen, though. My only celebrity fragrance! I loved the Sugar Hill Gang, but my favorite rap song is Dead Prez “They Schools.” In Maine, USA (but grew up in Queen, NY)

  • Loved this article so much and had no idea that Diddy wore Creed Milliseme or that Drake had Drakkar Noir tattoo. I tested use abuse and liked it alot but one with leather like nightflow really appeals to me. My favorite hip hop artist is coolio for gangsta’s paradise that my brother used to play.
Thanks for the draw and article

  • Wow. Marianne’s review is fabulous! I’m delighted to discover this house, especially after reading more on CaFleureBon and discovering Jusbox was founded by Italian siblings who love American music (Andrea & Chiana Valdo). A dive into their website shows the joy & esteem they find in our American musical arts. I’m already fascinated by their point of view.
I adore Marianne’s description of the 1970s NY scene (that I could only dream about). My version of this musical discovery took place in 1990s southern suburbia. The pavement & rubber scents of cruising parking lots…. sweet hazy heat & leather seats all remind me of Bvulgari Black. We were wistfully listening to N.Y. State of Mind by Nas, Gin & Juice by Snoop, and wishing we were anywhere else.
Marianne notes that Night Flow reminds her of Tuscan Leather. I would love to compare the two! I’m excited to order samples from Jusbox like Soul, Grunge, Swing, Acid House, Lounge, and more. This is the kind of soul-bearing full-throated synesthesia I can get behind. Thank you for the amazing opportunity to win! I live in the USA.

  • Probably one of the most interesting reviews I have read to date. Plus the fragrance itself sounds super interesting too. In maryland.

  • Dubaiscents says:

I love and own the other Julien Rasquinet scents for this line, Green Bubble and Black Powder, so this immediately caught my attention, especially to know that it is a leather with notes of raspberry, this sounds like Julien’s kind of work! I would love to own a bottle of this, no matter what the music style it is associated with. Thanks for the draw. US

  • Sherin Thomas says:

I found the information facinating regarding perfumes being name in rap and hip-hop songs. I am from PA, USA.

  • I loved Marianne’s description of the notes and how they come together to describe the feel of a night out. I grew up listening to Hot 97 out of NYC and ma’am, that description brought back memories. It’s impossible to pick just one favorite hip-hop song but to match with the feel of her description, I’ll say the Ms. Fat Booty remix with Mos Def and Ghostface. Also, USA resident

  • patrick_348 says:

That period in pop music is just a blur for me now, but I loved the way Marianne’s review described the fragrance in terms of the era’s ethos and style. I learned that there was a lot I wasn’t paying attention to at the time! The fragrance sounds as if it might be great fun to wear. In the US in NC.

  • I learned a bit of rap history I would otherwise not be familiar with. I would love to win this leathery offering from Jusbox, as I do love those bottle caps. US

  • Firstly, my favorite hiphop song is “Ride the Fence” from the Coup. I love that band! I really liked Marianne’s description of the night flow of Night Flow. Does that make sense? New York in the 70s has become mythic, and so has the start of hiphop. This sounds absolutely great.

  • Marianne did a nice job of bringing the hip hop era to light with a historical tour of various artists and songs. Drakkar Noir is a favorite of mine. Jusbox Night Flow seems to be a lovely perfume I’d like to try. Thanks for the review and draw. Writing from the USA.

  • NikkoNikko says:

Entertaining article! There is also a Viktor Vaughn (MF Doom) song called “Let Me Watch” that shouts out Samsara and Farenheit! I love catching mentions in songs. Night Flow also sounds great. Rasquinet using leather and raspberry (I immediately think of the moon) but with tobacco! Awesome! I’d love to try it! From Idaho, USA

  • Mary Jean says:

Growing up during Hip Hop era was great. So many wonderful rap artist. The culture, sound, messages in the rap music it was a movement. The dress style also had a big impact. Most of all it was the sound. Thank you for this Chance. USA

  • GennyLeigh says:

Sounds nice. I like the TF Tuscan Leather and would be interested in trying a “younger” version. The range of florals is great. I’m particularly excited to see osmanthus. I also have a bottle of Queen by Queen Latifah at home so I’m in good company with Marianne. Favorite hip-hop ( neo-soul?) song is Rebirth of Slick by Digable Planets. Commenting from MD, USA.

  • I’ve only heard of this fragrance house; I haven’t tried any of their releases. I think that it’s interesting that Sean Combs was fond of Creed’s Millesime Imperial and wanted someone to make for him a fragrance which would be similar to it. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • Growing up during this time period and being of the culture it brought back tons of great memories. Her description of the fragrance was spot on, especially the leather which was a staple in the 80’s. My favorite hip hop song is Slick Rck “Mona Lisa” . I live in Indiana USA

  • DulciusExAsperis says:

I also have a bottle of Queen Latifah’s perfume… it’s really good! And I had no idea Drake had a Drakkar Noir tattoo… that’s hilarious. Reminds me of high school dances. The guys in my high school were generally surrounded in clouds of Drakkar. My fave hip-hop song is “Eye Know” by De La Soul. Wish they were on Spotify… anyway I’m going to check out that playlist for sure! I’m in the USA.

  • You had me at “younger and more alive” Tuscan Leather! Sheesh. This sounds like a beautiful fragrance. I enjoyed hearing about some celebrity fragrances that Marianne owns. My favorite hip-hop artist is probably Drake or Biggie. USA

  • IvanVelikov says:

I do appreciate when owners and perfumers both think outside of the box . Interesting brand i have to explore …. finally . From Night Flow i expect really good sweet, floral, spicy leather fragrance for going out, and having some fun
Marianne review was great i have to say.
    “Shyne – That’s Gangsta ” is my favorite hip-hop song .
    Thanks to Marianne , Europerfumes

  • I loved the history and tie-in and learned that Drake had a fragrance tatoo! I like Salt-n-Pepa “Push It” and have one Jus Box scent that I like, so hope to try another. In NC, USA.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

Love this! I haven’t smelled Tuscan Leather but I love a leather fragrance and Jusbox’s packaging is adorable. I didn’t know drake had a Drakkar Noir tattoo. Thanks for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • From the first minute I saw there’s Hip- hop related fragrance, I just new Drake and Tuscan Leather will be in the article.
Apparently some Leather and fruit combinations do evoke the feeling of smelling cocaine in the… snorting community. I’ve been told this a couple of times.
Unlike 95% of modern day pseudo rappers, the message and the rhymes back in the days were more unique , and really powerful.
As for Justbox, it was unknown house to me , up until I read Green Bubble article on Cafleurebon. I was skeptic I admit, but for my own surprise I enjoyed it a lot. .Bought my bottle later on from Perfumology.
Wu-Tang Clan – Triumph is my favorite hip-hop song.
Of course my favorite Jusbox is Green Bubble.
Thanks to Europerfumes for the generosity , and to Marianne Butler for the fine work
    USA

  • Very interesting review!!! Had no idea that Diddy wore Creed Milliseme or that Drake had Drakkar Noir tattoo.
Unfortunately, I am not familiar with JusBox.
I love Tom Ford Tuscan Leather, so I looking forward to test this perfume.

I was not expecting this , hip-hop inspired fragrance review on Cafleurebon.
When i was a kid i had this crazy idea of becoming a famous jazz/ funk musician. Well in 8-9 months i was kicked out of every school , and not because i was lazy , but because i was just horrible . Later i wanted to become a rapper , never happened either haha
Tuscan Leather is a classic, I don’t mind the slight reminiscence . I feel like Marianne is pointing at me “Hey you go get it” Lol. Night Flow is the only Justbox fragrance I don’t know.
Beat Cafe i own and love.
Already follow all of you on Instagram
2Pac All Eyez On Me i just can’t get enough of , since the album came in 96′
    Thanks a lot.

  • Bubeto_GG says:

The Jusbox bottles are really nice especially the vinyl cap . What i like about the brand is the fact they follow their own path , and do not follow trends .
My favorite Jusbox is Siren & Sailors.Peachy , boozy , musky scent inspired by the late Amy Winehouse RIP.
Youthful, fruity leather fragrances are right up my alley, Night Flow is a joyful perfume i need to try.
Dr. Dre “Nuthin’ But A “G” Thang” is one of my favorite hip-hop songs
    Lovely opportunity , thank you

  • petergigov says:

Drake’s Drakkar Noir Ink WOW haha
Jusbox Night Flow i have not smelled, but Black Powder i own . Both are fruity leather fragrances with high compliment factor. I wonder how good Night Flow is, interesting fragrance i need to get my hands on.
My phone rings with Big pun ft Terror Squad – Watcha Gonna Do
    Exciting giveaway, USA
    Regards

  • Interesting brand , different size bottles, design. I admit I like all unique things Jusbox do bring to the table. Of course not every fragrance is appealing to me , but Green Bubble, Night Flow , Beat Cafe , Golden Serenade, Siren & Sailors are all really good.
Special thanks to Marianne Butler for making Tuscan Leather comparison, I do agree. Night Flow to me is noticeably sweeter and kind of warm fragrance.
Different fragrances of course with similar DNA , let’s put it this way.
The best Jusbox fragrance is Golden Serenade
Das EFX – Real Hip Hop resonates with me
    Thanks for the draw

  • People of all types are into fragrances so of course hip hop/rappers would be inspired by perfume. Fun spotify playlist too! No real favorites, but I always have a fondness for Beastie Boys No Sleep Till Brooklyn. I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • Michael Prince says:

What I enjoyed about Marianne’s review of Nightflow is her magnificent review describing how this is reminicent of a modernized and improved version of Tuscan Leather. I love learning how different faces of hip hop and R and B have represented, sponsored, or advertised for different fragrance brands and fragrances over the years. My favorite hip hop song is Badd by the Ying Yang Twins. I am from the USA.

  • What a great review!!
I had no idea that Drake had that tattoo or Sean Combs was fond of Creed’s Millesime Imperial.
    Night Flow sounds very lovely.
