Juliette Has A Gun Not A Perfume Review (2010) + What is it ? Draw

In 2010, Romano Ricci created Juliette Has a Gun Not A Perfume. I interviewed Romano in 2012  and here is a snippet from that interview:

What was your thinking behind Juliette Has A Gun Not a Perfume? What is it then? What’s the connection to Juliette?

Romano Ricci: It is a little bit outside of the collection actually. Instead of presenting a portrait, it is focused on a particular ingredient. Not A Perfume, being made out of a single ingredient (Cetalox©), 100% synthetic, allergen free. Quite a UFO in the perfumery world.

I remember asking Geza Schoen who created Escentric Molecules (the year JHAG Not A Perfume debuted in 2010) if he thought it was similar to his creation and he told me no. Juliette Has a Gun Not a Perfume has become one of the house’s most popular fragrances since it isn’t a complicated or complex scent. Whether you are a perfume journalist looking to clear your “palette” after smelling 300 new releases so far (I have) this year or someone who is looking for a clean, simple fragrance that works for your everyday life, Juliette Has A Gun Not A Perfume is a great antidote to heavy overpowering scents. So mix it up! –Michelyn Camen, Editor in Chief

I think Geza started a good trend of highlighting revolutionary molecules and now JHAG has embraced it, too. Not a Perfume’s sales prove there is a market for nice molecules-based scents. Sebastian and Michelyn say this is good for those who dont like heavy perfumes as this one is nice but not complex. It is also allergen free so suitable to wear around those with perfume allergies. thanks for draw. I am in US.

Love watching Sebastian’s video. I’m new to this line, it looks interesting!

  • You had me at earthy, woody, musky. Sounds like a great fragrance, especially for summertime. Great review Sebastian!

  • I’ve been more into natural perfumery recently but I have to admit this straight forward 100% synthetic also has a place, especially since it is allergy-free.

  • Ivan.napoleon says:

Sebastián s review great as usual
I liked the part about wearing it at the Office because of cetalox is very light.
    Miami Florida Thanks

  • Malka Leybov says:

Loved this review! Would really love to win a bottle. I love perfume ideas like these, simple – one note.

I love Molecule 01 so I am sure I would just love this one.

  • Sebastian is always mellow and very accurate in his descriptions of scents. So many of his recommendations I have 100% agreed with. This scent I will have to soon get my nose on.

  • I liked his idea about layering. Also, I have a few friends who are allergic to fragrances. This may be a safe bet. USA

  • This is so intriguing! I would love to see what kind of scent develops on me!!!great review Sebastian!!

  • MarkyMark5d says:

Mr Sebastian with another great review so it’s like M01 that sounds really cool I don’t have M01 but I’m very interested in it but I’ll settle for this.
Mr Sebastian know all the the perfumes very knowledgeable!!

  • Casey Shepard says:

Smelled this and it’s really good. I find its a bit less harsh than EM01.
Nice review by Sebastian. Like midnight oud and oil fiction too

  • Great review Sebastian as always. I’ve heard a lot of nice things about this juice and the name is quite intriguing. I would love to give it a try, thanks for the chance, US.

  • I like the paradox of not a perfume but in reality it is a perfume. When Sebastian brought this out, I though he was quite clever I noting the dichotomy. I also liked the fact that it is useful if you have allergies it is a good perfume to wear that will not over power and still make its present known.

  • Sounds like a gem. Can always use a minimalist frag. Sebastian as usual spared no details. Always a pleasure.

  • Love that people with allergies can wear! Also bed this when I too become nose blind or tired of smelling for a little…hehe!

  • I liked that he made it sound like it doesn’t really come across like a perfume, in the sense that it’s obvious you’re wearing something. It sounds like a louder version of a skin scent. Also a nice idea for a fragrance to be hypoalergenic, although I don’t personally need that myself.

  • I always like Sebastian’s reviews. Would love to give this one a try. Thanks so much for the draw. I’m in the USA

  • Enjoyed Sebastian’s review which, as always, was concise and down-to-earth. I’d really enjoy getting to try this one. I am in the US.

  • I’ve definitely come to enjoy the smell of ambroxen and did not know cetalox was a thing. Tidbits like that in reviews are great.

  • USA entry! I liked that Sebastian recommended it as a light work scent. I work with special education students, so I need to be cognizant of my projection and complexity when I wear scents, in case anybody is sensitive. I like JHAG as a house — especially their bullet atomizer design!

  • I always like Sebastian’s review.
I know Not a Perfume, but was interesting to know Sebastian opinion.
I did not know about Cetalex, I thought the may component is Ambroxan.
Nice perfume, not loud… Will like who love Molecules.
    U S

  • I really like his suggestion for using it to layer. I’m wondering if it will be functionally like ambroxen, and be a nice fixative for those scents that just have terrible longevity.
    I’m in the US. <3

  • I love this concept of “not a perfume”. I did sample this sometime after it’s release. Nice to hear an audio review of it. US

  • interesting, Not a perfume. Great video and sounds like the perfume or not is worth a try. I live in the US.

  • I always enjoy Sebastian’s reviews. I am a fan of Juliette Has A Gun. I’ve smelled Not A Perfume and it is interesting. It does smell nice. Very simple and woody and clean. I I never took the plunge to buy a full bottle but I’ve gotten many samples and experimented with layering it with other fragrances.
    I live in the USA.

  • I liked how Sebastian explained about Cetalox and how he described the scent. I agree it’s very minimalistic and it is very good for just relaxing from putting on stronger scents. I had a 5.5ml sample of it and enjoyed it very much especially after shower. It smells just so clean and crisp! He’s right in saying it’s perfect for work, it really wouldn’t offend anyone. It’s also great for layering! Very versatile scent.. I was only aware of cetalox from this perfume and discovered its similarity to ambroxan while looking it up online.. I guess I like ambroxan in some fragrances but not all.. This is a very good one!I hope I win the bottle! Thanks, really enjoy your reviews as usual!

  • Intriguing perfume, in the past I have wondered about Not a Perfume and then never managed to smell it. I will look for a tester bottle as I love ambergris-inflected scents. Eau des Merveilles is a favorite of mine.

I recently searched for a sample of Molecule 02 and the tester bottle at the particular perfume shop was empty! It must be quite popular. Escentric 02 was available so I will test that one soon.

I very much like Sebastien’s idea that Not a Perfume is a wonderful perfume-antidote in the sense that it is good for the tired nose. The other day I enjoyed sampling a new-to-me scent with a lovely tobacco note. In the evening I sprayed on a different scent I wear often and could hardly smell it. I think the heavier tobacco scent from the morning had fatigued my nose. As Sebastien mentioned it would be interesting to smell Not a Perfume layered with one of my favorite colognes such as Eau de Guerlain or 4711, or as a base for the beautiful citrus of Eau de Fleurs de Cedrat.

I’m quite excited now as I think about the possibilities of Not a Perfume. Thank you to Sebastien for the informative video review and to Juliette Has A Gun + CaFleureBon for the generous draw. I am in the US, and will look for Not a Perfume next time I am at a perfume counter, perhaps my local Sephora will have a tester if luck is with me.

  • Wonderful review!! Thank you Sebastian.
I like mostly oriental perfumes, but need light perfumes as Not a Perfume, but I would be great that thay have some depth.
As I remember I try this perfume 2-3 times- nice perfume, very simple, but little synthetic.

  • I always love Sebastian’s reviews.
I tried this scent, couldn’t smell anything at first but then as the day went on I could not stop smelling myself. It was just, different, good, better smelling version of me. I liked it!
    Would love a bottle!
Thanks for the draw, I’m in the US.

  • One of my absolute favorites. As Sebastian said in the video- SO easy to wear, not overhelming. Perfect for me for everyday because I’m in an office setting.

  • Another great review, Sebastian! I love JhaG and Not a Perfume! Totally agree with Sebastian about how great it is for layering just like the Molecule series. The irony of the title is indeed fun and represents the house’s tongue-in-cheek brand well. (CT/NY)

  • Shahrukh khan says:

Okay, for starters , the thought of synthetic scents scare me due to the fact that im a pretty masculine dude . Notes like rose and saffron just dont complement masculinity for most sporty people in my opinion. Im willing to try this and hopefully I win a free bottle because i dont know if i could purchase something ” synthetic” ,however the way sebastian breaks down catalox as being synthetic , but woodsy compells me .because their might be hope in a fragrance catagorize as that. I hope everyone respects my opinion and hopefully i can win a bottle to finally become more accepting of “synthetic” classified fragrances. Overall its seems like a solid fragrance as ive read reviews but i need to try it myself and see. Have a lovely day fragrance family!

  • I always look forward to Sebastian’s reviews because they are very informative and they are well researched! I had an opportunity to try this one on and he was spot on with this review. It’s perfect for the person who is allergic to fragrance or doesn’t like heavy fragrances. It’s only like Molecule 01 in concept in my opinion and not in scent. I agree that it is perfect for layering or wearing on it’s own. Thanks for the draw and I live in the US! 🙂

  • Illan Weiner says:

    Keyword I heard: minimalistic.

Would love to try something that contrasts most fragrances, and is straightforward and 100% synthetic.

Need a bit of a dabble.

  • Nise review as usual.Sebastian is so good with this-makes you feel like you’re holding the bottle and spraying yourself…I do like minimalistic , easy to wear and light fragrances you could also layer.
I’ve been following you,Sebastian ,Romano and Juliette Has A Gun on IG for a long time.
I do own full bottle of Into The Void and 30ml decant of Mmm.Into The Void is not from the same line as Not a Perfume, but from more uspscale line.
