Urban morning in the east. Collage and photos by dana

Memories are like a video tape- they get old. Even when stored away in a box you have not touched for years, they dry up; the colors fade; the sound gets muffled. You know that, but you keep it–because you never throw anything away. Then you take the tape out, you find a player that works, and you stick it in. The whirring sound revolutes your insides like a zoom back, looping your brain into a melancholy soup that’s both painful and ecstatic, self-punishing but insatiably blaming the world. And so, intentionally, you add color.

Looking down. Collage and photos by dana©

I grew up in a could-have-well-been-apocalyptic, end-of-Communism, painfully practical, painfully provincial Romania that has nothing, NOTHING to do with French perfumery and stays with me always: I fix instead of throwing away; I mirror & detach; I find voluptuousness in sadness. My comfort is made of industrial ruins, macrame, beating carpets at 2PM on a Sunday, uncut books, Chinese supplements bought on the black market, standing in lines for hours, crowded weddings, bad teeth, good philosophy, cheap school supplies, Tilia Cordata, Nivea creme, gas lamps, mussels decaying on the shores of Black Sea, and static. And any, and all, color we could grasp in a sea of grey.

The law is on the wall. Collage and photos by dana©

Ever since I met Jul et Mad, drawn by the founder’s own storyline as by a book with a fantastic plot, I’ve been shamelessly searching for the Romanian colorature- old but new, conceptually strong, and emotionally challenging . I’ve since been assigning it to a few fragrances, as notes and accords tapped into my overly aware, nostalgia-hungry smell centers. Artificial coloring? Maybe, but what is consumption of beauty if not a personal translation of the creative arts?

So, with all due respect to Julien, I’ll do what we all dream of doing and publicly appropriate Madalina as my folk, attaching Romanianness, the way I see it from here, to 3 otherwise wordly fragrances. I dedicate them, with your permission, to 3 Romanians I met in passing, who’ll never, ever know I’m writing about them.

Jul et Mad Amour de Palazzao review

Of life. Collage and photos by dana©

Amour de Palazzo, by Dorothee Piot, is for Arun. Born of who knows whom and raised on who knows what on the streets of a small town in the middle of nowhere, Arun had spirit, spark, and a thoroughly rehearsed discourse that allowed him to pass through life as the most artistic, flamboyant, solitary roma boy there ever was. He sang and wanted to be a star; between selling newspapers and trying hard to literate himself he’d hitchhike to obscure festivals and troll provincial TV stations until, tired of his optimism, they’d put him on air, where he’d shine with sweat, tears, and the self-proclaimed endurance of his people. He was small, loud, relentless, and fast; every dialog–a written poem; every question–deflected with obliterating kindness and unapologetic pride of being what he called a true gipsy.  Amour de Palazzo, like Arun, acts exactly like star it wants to be: noble by blood and tradition, familiar by presence and aplomb, both smooth and incisive.

Official notes: pepper, cloves, ginger, nutmeg, absolute of Violette, Atlas cedarwood, leather, Indonesian patchouli, labdanum, musk, oud, Amber, Papyrus, Animal Castoreum.

Juls et Mad review Terrasse a St-Germain

Morning in the south. Photo and collage by dana

Jul et Mad Terrasse a St-Germain, by Dorothee Piot, is for Raluca. Our fathers had some business, and for a while we vacationed together, forever separate like in parallel realities: her calm perfection / my disruptive turmoils; her inward smile / my outward screams; her combed, trim body / my exploratory ugliness; her calculated & wholesome self / my sharp(ened) corners. Everything about her was perfectly assembled, compact, and beautiful from the tip of her fingernails to her impeccable shoes, demure smile, feminine clothes; her hair was abundant and long to her bottom; her laughter was what writers write about; and her heterochromia made her unreal.  Terrasse a St-Germain is precisely that: essentially beautiful, and essentially feminine: delicate flowers in delicate hues, clear fruits in discreet arrangements, balanced essentials enough to provide an immovable presence but rarefied enough to permit existence, around, to others more strident- just like Raluca. And, just like her, absconding a darker truth made evident not through itself, but by the repeated exposure to the painfully beautiful serenity on top.

Official notes: Grapefruit, Tangerine, Rhubarb, Freesia, Lotus Flower, Blue Rose, musk, Sandalwood, Indonesian patchouli

Other perceived notes: jasmine, aldehydes, aquatic notes, benzoin

The art is in the eye. Photos and collage by dana

Jul et Mad Fugit Amor, by Stephanie Bakouche, is for Sorin. I met him a few times in the neighborhood, when late evenings filled with torpor drove us teenagers out of our scorching apartments and into the streets to kill time. He was older, poorer, and more patient than me, with a philosophical resignation and contained acceptance of the simple, provincial, hard-laboring life ahead of him. He had shiny eyes and a gentle manner; watching him I understood that not all “boys will be boys”. He had poise, discipline, and dignity- and broke the young, idealistic me in half with an only conversation I never thought I’d talk about: we are not all the same, and that’s OK. To each their own burden to accept it and be happy, or fight it and be broken. You’re not for here. Thank you for talking to me. Go be great.

Fugit Amor is as surreal as that night, sitting on that step, watching the asphalt melt while listening to the words above: contained, clear, acontextual, of the core. Classy, neutral-warm, and slightly reminiscent of clean masculines in the ‘90s, it lifts and opens with a sincerity hard to find, and impresses with the simplicity of a formative word at a formative time.

My pick, from the very beginning.

Declared notes: pink pepper, elemi, ginger, cardamom, cinnamon; carnation; vetiver, cedar, amber, musk.

Other perceived notes: guarana

  • Born in the communist Romania, grown in the post everything-was-when-Ceausescu, Dana’s review unlocked the back door of my memory and invited the past in. So lively, yet so sad. We were who we were and it built us whom we are today. No regrets. Thank you, fata draga, for your style of putting life into each word, and thank you for the give away. Ana S. from Spain, EU.

  • “Amour de Palazzo, like Arun, acts exactly like star it wants to be: noble by blood and tradition, familiar by presence and aplomb, both smooth and incisive.”
What a description! I really have to give a sniff to this one, I want to see how a noble, incisive perfume smells like:-) I was intrigued when I heard that their brand was aloud to add Paris at the end of their name, this is a distinction, not something that happens to everyone. I am proud that a romanian perfume Goddess like Dana reviews a creation of an another romanian, Madalina (the better half of Jul et Mad-sorry, Jul, it’s just a romanian saying 🙂

  • I appreciated how this trio of perfumes inspired Dana to honor her childhood and people she knew in Romania. The description of those whose touched her life was thoroughly enjoyable. As a fan of Jul et Mad I am thrilled to see a giveaway of either three creations, and I would love to win Terrasse à St-Germain. I appreciate the opportunity. I live in the USA.

  • I loved the descriptions of growing up in Romania and the role that color plays.
If I were to win one, Terrasse a Saint Germaine would be the one that I want. I want to be seen as rarefied and immovable. Balanced and beautifully feminine, but with a darker reality beneath.
And, I am in the USA.

I am in awe about how this trio of perfumes inspired Dana to glorify her childhood and people she knew back in Romania. It’s a beautiful description of how people touched her life and made her what she is now.

I would love to win Amour de Palazzo, as story of Arun attracts me the most. He had spark, and was a flamboyantboy who always wanted to shineand if Dana has compared this perfume to such lively character than am sure it would be fantastic.

I genuinely appreciate the opportunity. I live in the USA.

Our past does stay with us and continues to shape us as Dana’s review indicates. Dana’s review reminds us extreme scarcity was a harsh reality of everyday life in communist countries. My choice is Amour de Palazzo since it seems the most animalic and leathery of all. I am in US.

  • andalabanda says:

Dana, we grew up in the same Romania where people were the only spots of color in a sea of grey, so I understand why perfumes are evocative of people, and not of meadows, terraces or forests. I am definitely not Sorin or Raluca, so I would like to be Arun, the gipsy artist. Amour de Palazzo is my favorite Jul et Mad (I have a little sample) and this is the one I would love to win.

  • I had a friend who had grown up when there was still an Iron Curtain and she described the colorlessness as well. I think that Fugit Amor interests me with the notes that I love, although Terrasse a Saint Germaine is almost equal in its pull. Thank you so much for sharing your experience in light of these fragrances. Thank you also for a generous draw. I’m in the USA

  • I would love to win Terrasse a Saint Germaine, so beautifully described and mysterious sounding, I would just love to get my nose on it.

  • I loved the vivid description of the landscape at the beginning. There’s something surreal when you see a run down industrial aesthetic with colors haphazardly added after a while. I’ve seen it in some areas which experienced economic hardship. I took lots of pics and some people loved them.
I’d like Jul et Mad Fugit Amor if I win. Im in the US. thanks for the draw

  • Ms Dana’s poetic comparisons, actual people to fragrances, was mesmerizing, to say the least. The artwork was just as stunning. How does she do it? It’s definitely an art. If lucky, I would choose Fugit Amour. Thanks for another fabulous article & giveaway! USA

  • What resonated with me was the paragraph which opened with, “I grew up in…”. I would like if chosen the Amour de Palazzo. US

  • Oh, my word! Dana’s writing is other-worldly and I am assuming English is not her native language…how is such beautiful writing possible? That is what I appreciated most in this review. As far far as my choice should I be so lucky as to win, I would choose Terrasse a Saint Germaine; Freesia, sandalwood and aldehydes are calling my name! I am in the US.

  • Ah yes! I’ve known and admired a few Raluca’s in my lifetime. I love their effortless and organized way. It calms me. I am not a Raluca. I think Terrasse a Saint Germaine may help me. 🙂 Thanks for your review, Dana. I knew it was you without even looking. Your writing style is unique and special. In the USA.

  • The ‘sea of grey’ analogy not only applies to some cities, but also to mass-market scents these days – dull, too familiar, forgettable. Would love to win Jul et Mad Fugit Amor. VA

  • IvanVelikov says:

Sorin story resonates with me big time . About your age i met a kid with same attitude , happy and gentle at the same time. His father was , and still is a taxi driver . We became close friends , and when i get back home when i’m originally from , we always talk for hours . Such a great guy . Well he became a taxi driver like his father , but despite a lot of hours he’s working , almost 30 years later the smile never lives his face .
Fugit Amor is my choice , clean masculine scents from the 90s i’m a fan of.
    Thanks
    USA

  • I grew up in s poor city also where everyone I knew was either in a gang or shut away as soon as they got home from school. Very emotional writing and beautiful illustrations. Arun story I identified but Fugit Amour would be my choice
    Thank you

  • Dana gave us a very vivid description of her youth in Romania-“conceptually strong and emotionally challenging”. All of the Jul et Mad scents sound striking but Terrasse a St Germaine resonates with me the most.

  • Terresse a saint Germaine sounds beautiful. Interesting to name a fragrance that way, creative. Rally a would be impressed. Thank you for the chance to try this special one! USA

  • What a brilliant idea for a post! Dana, epic review.
After reading each one I feel that the Terrasse a Saint Germaine would be my choice, however, they each sound sublime.

  • Jul et Mad Terrasse a St-Germain sounds amazing with the grapefruit notes would love add this to my collection.

  • I really enjoyed how Dana related these perfumes back to people she had met and her childhood. Especially Fugit Amor and how she talked about how people are not all the same and it’s up to each of us to “accept it and be happy, or fight it and be broken.” If I should win I would like to win Fugit Amor. In CT USA. Thanks.

  • I was intrigued by the article’s mentioning of the memories that we have store away, longing to revisit. And I find the most gratifying memories to be those attached to scent. Great article. I am interested in Jul et Mad Fugit Amour. (Commenting from FL, USA)

  • Shiny eyes and a gentle manner have no gender, so it’s Fugit Amour for me. Dana’s reviews paint perfect pictures, and these reviews are no different. New York resident.

  • Hi Ann! Thanks for the giveaway. I loved her story of Romania and the people from the neighborhood. Fugit is the one for me. I already own Amor. It was one of my unicorns. LOVE! I’m in Cleveland and overdue for a trip to Indigo. Last time was late spring.

  • Bryant Worley says:

Wow! Dana really gave a good description of her childhood, connecting the description with the fragrance. Nice! I would like to win Amour de Palazzo, as Arun was presented as a raw, unadulterated, carefree individual, and the notes to the fragrance make it seem as such. And I would like to smell like that:-D

  • Some fragrances are capable of evoking childhood memories, and I’m glad Dana shared some of hers, when she reviewed the three Jul Et Mad extraits de parfum.
If lucky I’d like to win 50ml of Fugit Amor . When we were kids even though we knew our families were different, and money our parents had were different, we were still friends. Good old times… I need to call a few childhood friends I have not seen in years. Thank you Dana for reminded me of this.
I already have one Jul Et Mad fragrance called Nea , unique gourmand I love.
    Thanks again

I like the 90s throwback. I’d love to win Fugit Amor because I am a big fan of ginger, cardamom, and cinnamon in fragrances. I’m in the USA.

  • Nice article and very personnel. I enjoyed the stories told through each fragrance and how they connected to Dana’s past and memories. Hauntingly beautiful. Would live to win Amour de Palazzo. In the USA.

  • Dana is slowly becoming one of the best contributors on Cafleurebon.
I myself grew up in Europe, and I can relate to Sorin story. Of course we are not the same, but to be honest when I was a young kid , to me it was not a big deal if the kids I was playing with were richer , or poorer than me. We shape our own destiny after all.
Fugit Amor please. I am watching Dana’s colleges right now, and I have to say Jul et Mad bottles are beautiful.
    Thank you. USA

  • Even though I’m familiar with Jul et Mat , I was not aware of the Romanian part of it 🙂 Good to know.
The third story, about Fugit Amor and Sorin is the one I like the most, and the fragrance I really like to win. Dana’s memories of him, reminded me of a quote from Nikita Gill :

“If you have been brutally broken, but still have the courage to be gentle to others then you deserve a love deeper than the ocean itself ” .

Jul et Mat I know because of Garuda , and Nea. Both are top quality Luca Maffei creations. The only thing I don’t get is why Nea is marketed for women only. To me it’s unisex.
Just followed @dorothee.piot , all other profiles i already follow.
    Thank you all

  • patrick_348 says:

I liked so very much dana’s associating the three scents with particular people. If I win, I would want Fugit Amor, because the person she describes in Sorin seems closer to me than either of the other two, or at least closer to what I would like to be. And the notes for that one sound great. I am in the USA.

  • I often think of how fortunate I am to have grown up in the US, but reading this made me think that perhaps I missed something in my all too comfortable life in the suburbs. I do enjoy to read about other people’s experiences in different countries. I’d love to win Terrase a St. Germaine as I love rhubarb and this sounds sparkly and colorful on the top notes. Thanks for the interesting read. USA.

  • Growing up in Eastern Europe during communist era as a kid , when your parents are regular people , not making even the average for the country was bad , an I really mean B-A-D . I was in Sorin shoes , and I can tell. Not in Romania , but still…
My choice is Fugit Amor , not only because I was in Sorin shoes , but because the perfumer Stephanie Bakouche . I’m a Barber , and she created my beloved Invasion Barbare , wildly considered to be one of the best barbershop scents ever.
I have to admit Dana article was highly enjoyable , thank you.
    USA

  • doveskylark says:

I loved how dana’s review vividly depicted growing up in Romania. It was interesting to read about her memories. I particularly liked reading about Sorin. I know all about resignation and acceptance. But I also know about escaping into the streets. I would choose Fugit Amour.
    I live in the USA.

  • Growing up poor is every child nightmare , so straight to your question yes , Sorin story moves me . Growing up on bread and baloney, and expiring sereals is something I remember quite well. I’m thankful for all of this, because it made me stronger, and motivated me to be a better person , and to work smarter, not harder.
If lucky Fugit Amor is the one, I’ll be happy to win.
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign. USA

  • This review was so full of….everything! I loved living in your skin for a moment. Amour de Palazzo sounds like a beautiful scent, per your description. It’s notes of violet, patchouli and labdanum sound very lovely. Thanks for such a great review. USA

  • What a amazing, rich article. Unfortunately, I have never tested any Jul et Mad perfumes, but intrigued by all 3 perfumes description. “…slightly reminiscent of clean masculines in the ‘90s”- WOW..this is enough for me?!!! I miss style of 90s perfumes.
    US

  • Love that Jul et Mad Terrasse a St-Germain has a rhubarb note. The opening sounds so fresh and citrusy and juicy but love how in the drydown it becomes rich and earthy with patchouli and sandalwood.

But Jul et Mad Fugit Amor, by Stephanie Bakouche sounds incredible with the cinnamon, vetiver and cedar notes. If I had to choose between the three scents, I’d go with Jul et Mad Fugit Amor, by Stephanie Bakouche.

    I live in the USA.

  • The description of Sorin reminded me of a gentle soul who was wise and patient beyond his years when I was a cauldron of discontent. I’d love to win Fugit Amour. I’m in the US. Thank you for sharing your memories with us.

  • Michael Prince says:

Dana, great review of Indigo Perfumes Jul et Mad Fugit Amour, Terrasse a Saint Germaine, and Jul et Mad Amour de Palazzo. Great storyline of how you were brought up in Romania and how you tied it in to when you met Julet et Mad. I would pick Jul et Mad Fugit Amor. I am from the USA.

  • I connected and related with Dana by here creative writing. The reader can imagine, sense and put themselves in the story and inspiration crafted here. I especially like that each fragrance was connected to person as well. I would love to win amoure de palazzo ! I have been seeking a light amber with character !

  • Dubaiscents says:

This may be one of my favorite perfume reviews! I love how Dana has equated the scent with someone from her past and how she shared such detail about her early life in Romania. Scent really is universal and brings even the most obscure things together. I think I would chose Amour de Palazzo based on the description of Arun and his dedication and love of performing! Thank you for the giveaway Indigo Perfumery and Cafleurebon! I’m in the US.

  • Dana’s review reminds me of growing up and experiencing extreme scarcity due to war. Foods and supplies were rationed. What a sad time for us all. I would love to win Terrasse à St-Germain.

  • The Plum Girl says:

Growing up in such a “climate” made us – stronger, I’d say. I hear you: trying to fix before replacing, mend before throwing away, recycling, making the most of what you have on your hands – not just things, relationships too. Loved your short stories, Dana, and Fugit Amor sounds interesting. I live in EU.

  • Thank you, Dana, for sharing a part of your past with us. We all have memories from our childhood. Some are the happiest ones and some we try to remember the way we want them to, not necessarily how they played in our past. I love the way you described Jul et Mad’s Terrasse a St-Germain, Raluca. This part I liked best – ‘And, just like her, absconding a darker truth made evident not through itself, but by the repeated exposure to the painfully beautiful serenity on top.’ I’m interested in Terrasse a St-Germain. Thanks for this opportunity. – CA, USA

  • Was a cool article. I like how each fragrance is connected to someone. I haven’t got the chance to try anything from Jul eat Mad. They sound nice. I’d probably go with Fugit Amor. Thanks, US

  • Thank you all for your kind words. It’s hard to imagine one’s historical reality, so personal and, if I may, niche, resonates so clearly in people so far from me, culturally.
Then again, maybe fragrance, indeed, brings us together.

  • Dana, excellent review and I loved how it related to Romania and your childhood! My favorite line was: “Terrasse a St-Germain is precisely that: essentially beautiful, and essentially feminine: delicate flowers in delicate hues, clear fruits in discreet arrangements, balanced essentials enough to provide an immovable presence but rarefied enough to permit existence, around, to others more strident- just like Raluca. And, just like her, absconding a darker truth made evident not through itself, but by the repeated exposure to the painfully beautiful serenity on top.” I would love to win Terrasse a Saint Germaine and I live in the US!

  • What resonated with me about Dana review was the sadness and painful childhood life in an post apocalyptic Romania. I would like to win Jul et Mad Amour de Palazzo. Thanks for the draw. I live in USA.

  • Thank you Dana for a touching review. It was nice of you to dedicate specific fragrances to people that touched you historically and of the three, I find a kindred spirit in Arun. If lucky to win I’d choose Jul et Mad Amour de Palazzo. I’m in TX USA
