Jovoy Paris Touche Finale via Instagram detail
What is better than perfume to bring forth old memories from the dregs of time and forgotten dreams from the net of oblivion? Is there aught else to bind together the past and the present, the Earth and the Air, all that is and all that is not – than perfume – and thus breathing an ever-young fire into worn hearts? Is there aught in the world of men that bears such power to dig up the tastes and colours and the feels of bygone eras more vividly – than perfume? And to enable us to journey through dimensions of time and of space and make known to us realities that had long shied away from our lives?
Such is the fleeting, oh so fragile strength of Jovoy Paris Touche Finale for as soon as I spritzed it, as I sprayed it on the hollow of my wrist, I felt as if the fabric of time, of time and of space, had been ripped asunder; and there sprang before me the sight of my hometown of Orléans in its winter mourning cloak; and it was a brisk morning that day and a cobalt-blue sky; and there rose above the river and the streets a mist that covered the city in blueish tones of white; and there cut through the silence that comes with frost a perfumed breeze – and it was warm.

A golden shimmer spurred out of a revolving door and rushed to embrace us, the scent of Christmas lights scintillating like stars in light of day, and it led us to a temple of might and glory undimmed against the shadow of churches, crushing the old town with its Glorious Thirties allure and scarlet bannered facades and as we entered, I discovered a world yet unknown to me of pearls and jewels, velveteen floors and marble staircases, nail polish and dresses, the last of tiaras and gilded bracelets and the hush of peroxide blond ladies, their red lips and waxen legs, scurrying to and fro from atop their stilettos.

Christmas dreams and waltz of scents – Jovoy Paris Touche Finale is a minuet and a fever. It is red and it is velvet and shines like a polished nail, like a polished shoe, bright like a smile and a smear of lipstick on the hand. Cosmetic nuances of a heart of heliotrope enlivened by a cluster of mimosa fuzz-blooms sparkling with a zing of mandarin and pepper, a lacquer-like backdrop of Bakelite counters and perfume caps lost in a haze of hairspray. An image of sheer luxury of a time long-lost when all would dress up in top hats and brooches and when hands and necks would be dripping with rubies.

Golden perfume of a Golden Era, Jovoy Paris Touche Finale is far from being a simple re-enactment of their famed Poudré for it achieves newfound heights. The final touch of a lost perfume, Jovoy Paris Touche Finale stands out as an olfactory photograph capturing the splendour of men and women living in a dream. Wistfully vintage, this perfume summons like an enchantress the spirit of this insouciant hour, of glamour and rice powder – rose and violet light seen through a crystal glass.

Vanina Muracciole and François Hénin proffer to a new generation of fragrance lovers, a marvelous testament to Jovoy’s heritage and luxury. As I write these words, I imagine the glory that was Cartier and Tiffany’s long ago; of Leslie Caron and black-and-white films in which, as if by magic were alive the colours and the intricate splendour of their time.

Once at last I exit the perfumed hall, I am left with a trail of white musk scenting my scarf and I feel the thrill of passing through the door on such mornings of winter and being greeted with the biting cold blizzard yet feeling warm, my clothes and my hair and my skin glowing of this creamy-white sandalwood beam, the last of heliotrope’s sheen – feeling like an Emperor or a Queen.
Jovoy Paris Touche Finale is a Promethean perfume that succeeds in tearing apart the fabric of time to knot together memories and dreams of days I never lived, of riches I never saw.
