Jo Malone Silver Birch and Lavender Review (Yann Vasnier) 2021 “Scintilla of Silver For the Solstice”

In the bleak mid-winter

Frosty wind made moan,

Earth stood hard as iron,

Water like a stone;

Snow had fallen, snow on snow,

Snow on snow,

In the bleak mid-winter

Long ago. ~ A Christmas Carol (1871), Christina Rossetti

As the winter solstice rapidly approaches, those of us in the Northern Hemisphere bundle up, hunker down and seek reasons to celebrate light in a time of darkness; we tend to envelop ourselves in the trappings of hygge whenever possible. Our comfort rituals include intimate gatherings with dear friends, a blazing hearth, deeply resinous fragrances, warming potables that banish invernal shivers (mulled wine, warm spiced kir, all manner of hot toddies, cocoa, tea); fuzzy socks, blankets, sweaters, scarves, mittens and shawls. These are each golden moments in time – and I found myself pondering the silvery aspects as well: which of the newer fragrances depicted that scintilla of silver fit for the solstice? I didn’t have far to look.

Jo Malone Silver Birch & Lavender is easy to love, from its piquant introduction heralded by grapefruit rind (which smells both citric and floral) to exquisite lavender which showcases all of its comely visages (flowery, herbal, woody, fruity, coumarinic) and the delicate drydown of a birch accord (as opposed to birch tar, which is a radically different material altogether and is employed in the perfumer’s evocation of leather) with subtly caramelic oaken undertones.

It possesses a silken quality which is understated and complete in the way that a length of silk charmeuse is: embellishment, furbelows and sequins are unnecessary because the material speaks for itself. To adorn the fragrance further would be to render it disservice. Silver Birch and Lavender personifies Coco Chanel’s opinion that simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance – pristine in an argentine fashion, all shimmer and sleek freshness. A well-tailored item retains its value, and in the skilled hands of senior perfumer Yann Vasnier of Givaudan, this cologne not only mirrors the crispness of the season, it will work perfectly well year ‘round: tonic in spring, refreshing in summer, and elegiac in the autumn.

I find Jo Malone Silver Birch & Lavender suitable for all occasions and genders, equally at home in a tuxedo or workout gear. Its ability to make one feel perfectly groomed is an effortless pleasure for every family member, no matter their age; its appeal is that universal. As such, it’s a wonderful present, especially for those who aren’t seeking beast sillage and prefer to wear their favorite scent as opposed to having it wear them. It’s not an insult to be inobtrusive – it can be seen to be a courtesy and a kindness at times, and wearing this fragrance lends one a certain air of well-bred grace. Notes: grapefruit, lavender, silver birch accord, roasted oak

Tester bottle generously provided by Jo Malone London – many thanks! My entire family adores it. My nose is my own…

  • Wow, Ida! What a gorgeous review!!! ❤️❤️ As I was reading, I was thinking: yes, but what about the sillage of Jo Malone fragrances? … and there was your beautiful answer: “for those who aren’t seeking beast sillage and prefer to wear their favorite scent as opposed to having it wear them. It’s not an insult to be inobtrusive – it can be seen to be a courtesy and a kindness at times, and wearing this fragrance lends one a certain air of well-bred grace.” ❤️ This made me think of the times when one is indoors during the long winter and how stuffy/hot a room can be. Perhaps a scent like Silver Birch & Lavender is a perfect kindness to oneself & others!
I didn’t know that the birch accord was so different from birch tar, thank you! ❤️
Thank you for a lovely review!

  • Great Review Ida! This sounds great love the notes. It’s perfect for all ages and it’s unisex. It’s a wintertime Fragrance. Love Jo Malone . Thank you for this Chance. USA

  • Wow, that’s quite a nice review Ida 🙂 I also find that sometimes I just want to wear fragrances that are beautiful and sit close and it sounds like Jo Malone Silver Birch & Lavender is just that. I’ll have to give this a try someday

  • Fantastic review! Very well written. I love the photograph of the dried lavender and birch tree shavings on an old oaken table. I can’t wait to try this out. Thank you for the review!

  • Ida, your review is lovely and speaks well to this unisex fragrance. I have been uncertain about investing in Jo Malone scents as they aren’t known to last well. You allude to this in the last paragraph. They do capture beautiful fragrances, however; maybe this is one I’ll have to try for myself.

  • Nice, honest review Ida. Haven’t tried any Jo Malone perfumes personally, yet. This one has very few notes and is unobtrusive, so it’s definitely different. I may have to check this out – my way to have a softer punch is typical, that of using less of any strong, heavy perfumes (which I own aplenty and do like many of them). But a gentle, unobtrusive perfume has its place indeed. From USA.

Thank you, Ida, for reviewing this special from Jo Malone. A lot of perfumistas complain about the lack of longevity of fragrances from the house, and your article echoes how I’ve felt for their line since I fell in love with a few of their fragrances this year. They are designed to be elegant and understated and my feeling based on my long association with England is that this understated elegance reflects the country of their birth, of English reservedness and the quiet confidence that one not need to stand out. This is actually one I did not sample the last time I was at a Jo Malone counter b/c I didn’t see myself wearing a lavender fragrance or thinking that it would work beyond the holiday season (also didn’t help that I felt the saleslady was pushing it on me!), though you have opened my mind to it. Thank you again, and happy holidays!

  • Great review. I love Yann Vasnier’s work for Parfums DelRae and Divine. I need to try this and some of his other creations for Jo Malone.

  • Thank you, Ida, for this enthusiastic review of Jo Malone’s Silver Birch & Lavender. I’ll have to sample it soon!
