Ineke Jaipur Chai Review (Ineke Ruhland) 2019 + The Pink City Draw

Ineke Jaipur Chai review

Aishwarya Rai in the film Guru (2007)

Somewhere, a warm murmur of voices rise and fall, inarticulate, gentle, punctuated by the clack of typing, the soft clatter of china clinking. The interior lights are warm and golden against the grey day, and rain falls in rivulets racing each other down the broad panes of glass. Street sounds. Cars slosh through oil rainbows and pothole puddles. Books you may never read lay on the small table in front of you, and a cup of spiced tea steams. On the far wall, a poster of the pink city – Jaipur – beckons you faraway, and the spices rising from the ceramic mug in your hand summon a thousand tales not yet heard.

Indian Blanket Through the Rain by Steven Ward

For those of us who love the city rain, there is an amniotic comfort to curling up with a book and a steaming, milky cuppa while the glow of street neon is smudged by the cascades of rain gathering in the gutters. Ineke Ruhland, a classically trained artisan perfumer based in San Francisco, is such a pluviophile. Her first gourmand fragrance, Ineke Jaipur Chai is inspired by her love of her cherished cuppa during the rainy season in San Francisco. She imbues this delicious, enveloping scent with traditional chai spices and steamed milk, rounded with rose and smooth woods – the perfect scent to savour on a damp grey day whilst listening to the patter of the storm.

The first spray of Jaipur Chai brings a rush of piquant, pungent spice: a bite of ginger rises like hot vapor. I smell both fresh and dried root here; the tickly sharpness of the one playing off the sharp, stemmy juice. More spices tumble over each other, the dusty, musky smell of cardamom edging over the russet, barky sweetness of cinnamon. Then the aromatic kick of black pepper cuts in. The juxtaposition of warm and sharp spices; ginger against cinnamon, pepper against cardamom, keeps the composition from veering into coffee shop cliché. Jaipur Chai signals gourmand without going full-on sugar at any point.

As the spices are coalescing a lovely, strange note peeks in – dry, velveteen rose, referencing the hue of India’s “Pink City.” Ten minutes later, reaching the heart of Jaipur Chai, the rose softens and expands but keeps an aspect of the papery dried petal with its parchment smell. Then, the creamy, frothy scent of steamed milk rises. For a while, the spices almost suspend as the milk and rose notes blend with vanilla into rose petal jam and cream scones.

And yet, the fragrance never becomes overtly sweet, as so many other attempts at chai and latte perfumes do. Jaipur Chai does not smell literal, which is perhaps what keeps it from becoming dessert-like. Yes, the aromas and creaminess of the brew are there, and the Indian spicing, but Ruhland adds the mellowness of guaiac and woody darkness of cedar to keep everything in balance. A hint of suede towards the drydown echoes the velvety quality of the rose in the middle stage. Smell  Ineke Jaipur Chai now, and it is a part chai latte, part rose and suede perfume. It’s warm, cozy, lovely, and makes me feel like purring.

Many hours later, as dusk is gathering, I imagine I hear the drumbeat of rain against my bedroom window. I am curled up in a window seat, watching the water bounce like ball bearing off the glassy surface of a lake faraway. Pink walls the colour of strawberry ice emerge from the middle distance, and a girl laughs and dances in the downpour. I sip my chai and close my eyes and listen.

Notes: Black tea, cardamom, ginger, cinnamon, pepper, clove, rose, cedar wood, guaiac wood, vanilla, cream, suede, musk.

  • Hygge isn’t Indian, but that is the sense I get from this review. It sounds divine. Cedar never seems dark to me, so I would love a chance to experience the “woody darkness of cedar” as described. I have never tried Ineke perfumes. And I am in the USA.

  • Lovely article, Lauryn. I do have a few samples of some of Ineke perfumes. They are beautiful and creative. My favorite is Angel’s trumpet. I would love to try Jaipur Chai. USA Thank you

  • Once again, the synchronicity is astounding. I was just yesterday having a lengthy discussion with a friend about chai tea, and what do you know – Ineke, Lauryn and I must have been on the same wavelength! Very intrigued to hear about the rosey and suede nuances in the drydown though – a stroke of inspiration that undoubtedly evokes the heart of the Indies when enveloped by dry spices. Up until now, Idyllwild was probably my favourite Ineke creation, but I can see Jaipur Chai following close behind. A great review. Canada.

  • I love chai tea so I really want to try Jaipur Chai out. The chai tea notes with cedar and rose sounds like an incredible wearing experience. I’m in the USA.

  • Sounds like a warm, cuddly fragrance with sprinklings of spice and a kick of pepper and woods. Also I liked how it is not “dessert-like”. I do not have a favourite Ineke perfume as this brand is new to me, but I’d love to have a chance to check it out. Regards from Boston USA.

  • I can often be found with a steaming Chai latte in hand, especially this time of year. The warm, creamy spiciness is so comforting without being overly indulgent. This fragrance’s restraint in going gourmand without becoming excessively sweet, as Lauryn has described, is very appealing. I would love for this to be my first Ineke fragrance.

  • Comfort. That’s what this review imparted to me. I love the smell of chai, but for some reason I am not a fan of the drink itself. Canada.

  • I love Ineke scents and have been anxiously awaiting this release. Chai spices are my favorite and this sounds so delicious. I own and love Idyllwild, which is in my top five. Thank you to Ineke for her generosity! US

Thanks for the lovely review Lauryn. I’ve always wondered about a fragrance that recreates the feeling of a cuppa chai – moreso during the monsoons or in rainy weather. I imagine notes of petrichor or something along those lines.

I love the fact that it is not overly sweet (as American Chais tend to go) or too dry.

    Love from Madison, WI, USA!

  • wow, one thing to sip chai, which technically IS smelling it, too, but to wear it, surrounding you…sounds lovely. with those notes, jaipur chai might become w fav

  • Exciting description! I find perfumes with strong forward notes of tea and/or cinnamon irresistible. So a combination of both sounds delicious. If it’s anything like Serge Lutens Five O’Clock Gingembre, I’ll be swooning. I’ve never tried an Ineke perfume, but I’ll look into them now. Lovely review. Canada.

  • I had no idea Jaipur was known as the ‘Pink City’! I’m always on the hunt for my next masala chai fragrance (I love Bvlgari Omnia and Jovoy Remember Me, and yes I know that the Jovoy is meant to invoke Karak) and the guaiac, cedar, and suede preventing this from becoming overly sweet while still maintaining its velvety feel make it sound like it could be an all-time great! I would love to give it a try and would be even more thrilled to win a bottle! I am in the US 🙂

  • My first introduction to Ineke was Field Notes From Paris. I’ve been a fan ever since. Thanks for another fabulous draw! USA

I love chai and all of the spices it entails. Especially ginger. I’m a huge ginger lover. I like the sound of this in that it’s not too sweet and seems like the spices really take center stage. Thank you for the review and draw. I’m in the US.

    Nice review by Lauryn.
Haven’t experienced the line, Chai tea sounds wonderful tho

  • As a Bay Area resident, I know and love just the kind of weather that inspired this. And as someone who loves nothing more than reading with a warm beverage close at hand, this sounds like a perfect fit for me. I haven’t tried anything from Ineke, and this sounds like a perfect starting point. I’m in the US.

  • I’d be very curious to see how the rose and suede work with the spices and woods. I have found other chai fragrances to be a bit too literal so I was happy to read this one isn’t. It’s also nice to know this isn’t overly sweet. I need to try more fragrances from the brand! I live in the USA.

    **Jaipur Chai**
What can i say about this City (known as pink city or land of kings) I am basically from India and I live close to Jaipur and have been there 9 – 10 times and love every single trip and have some good memories.

It has many Palaces which show off the history of the royal land.

By reading Lauryn description, I felt i am there again. I felt emotional by the pictures she used as they brought back so many memories from my teen hood 🙂

Aishwarya Rai (Miss World from India 1994) and the palace along with Elephant and that lady. Lauryn couldn’t have chosen better pictures than these.

Thank You Lauryn, you made an Indian proud 🙂

Now, coming back to Chai, We start our day with Chai and its an integral part of our lives and i love the smell of lack tea, cardamom, ginger, cinnamon, pepper, clove as they are used to make Chai.

I would surely love to win this fragrance for myself as whenever i will sniff I will go back to my motherland 🙂

Thanks for the opportunity to win this beauty 🙂

  • It seems I’m not the only one who opens the curtains and calls the dog over to look at the rain! Yes, cardamom! And all the other delicious notes grounded so they don’t veer into irritating. I have the Ineke sampler set and love them all. I live in the USA.

  • First and foremost, the mere fact that there’s an Ineke launch gets me excited- in a time of accelerated collections, slow perfumery is a feat to be celebrated.
Speaking to this particular juice, it fall very close to my own recent explorations with matcha, ananda, spiced herbs, and aromatic teas. I would love a chance at this, and at owning another Ineke (my other is Evening Edged in Gold). Good luck to all, and thanks much for the giveaway.

  • i love chai, and a cuppa on a rainy day, warm and cozy. i would love to try it on a rainy day here in Seattle. I do not have a favorite Ineke perfume, but this could be one. thank you for the draw

  • Jaipur Chai’s name is self-explanatory and it does seem like a different tea composition than the usual ones released in recent years, many of whom sought inspiration from Chinese tea rather than Indian tea. USA

  • Julie Ellen Prusinowski says:

Love Ineke’s scents, my faves include Field Notes From Paris, Idyllwild, and Poet’s Jasmine. This sounds delicious without being too sweet– just my cup of chai!

  • BostonScentGuy says:

Thanks for the generous draw! This sounds cozy and wonderful. I love hearing how this evokes chai in feeling, but that it isn’t super overly foodie-literal! It sounds like a great rainy day scent. I’m a fan of the richness of Evening Edged in Gold. I’m in the US.

  • beth brezenoff says:

I love Ineke fragrances and I love gourmands and I’m so excited to try this one. Everything about it sounds cozy and wonderful.

  • Jennifer Wingard says:

I love Inekes Gilded Lily and Hothouse Flower and am very curious to try the most recent addition to her collection. Thanks to Cafleurbon and Ineke for the opportunity.

  • Lauryn’s description leaves me wanting to follow her to that window seat and feel that fragrance wash over you at the same time you are sipping your own “cuppa.” Ireally like the idea of a cozy scent that isn’t too sweet. I love “After my Own Heart.” Thanks for a great review and a generous draw. I’m in the USA.

  • What strikes me about Ineke Jaipur Chai is the creativity. The use of the ginger and spices along with tea and then of course rose. It does not sound like a common chai tea or latte perfume with the additions of the woods, rose, and suede. I liked how the review said the suede “echoes the velvety quality of the rose”. Along with vanilla, one of my absolute favorite notes this creation sounds unique and wonderful. I have not tried anything from Ineke thus do not have a favorite. In the U.S. Thanks to Ineke and Cafleurebon for the generous draw.

  • I have not tried any Ineke perfumes, but this one sounds appealing. I like the idea of a gourmand that is not sweet. It sounds like it will be warm and cozy without being heavy or overwhelming. I am in the US.

  • Jaipur is one of my favorite cities in the world and this perfume sounds just lovely. I think it is the addition of the rose to the tea and spices that intrigue me. Thanks for the review.

  • It’s a rainy day in the Midwest today, too. I imagine it would be a perfect day to wear the Jaipur Chai. Great detailed description of the development of this fragrance, I can almost smell it.
I have a bottle of Briar Rose and a sample of Scarlet Larkspur. The next one I want to test is the Evening Edged in Gold and hopefully, this latest creation from Ineke.

  • What struck me is the feeling described- it reminded me of working in a cafe as a teenager, where we made the house chai in a giant stick pot with whole spices. I have many memories of coming from the rain into the comfort of the cafe and its smell of simmering chai. My favourite Ineke perfume is Poet’s Jasmine!

  • DANIEL HERNANDEZ ROJAS says:

I love most perfumes that feature the black tea note because is very cozy and original also I love the blend with the sweeter elements like cinnamon and vanilla, never smelled this one before but I am fascinated with the description. Proud reader from NEW YORK CITY.

  • Chai, ROSE and woods? Sign me up. I love rose and spice. I have tried these Inekes:
    Idyllwild
    Balmy Days and Sundays
    Chemical Bonding
    After my own Heart
    Derring-Do
My fave might be Idyllwild because my horse’s name is Idyll. 🙂 I’m in USA.

  • Part chai latte, part rose and suede perfume is what got me. Then she topped it off with warm, cozy lovely 🙂 I have not yet tried an Ineke fragrance but would love to start with this. Thank you for the review and the giveaway. Regards from USA

  • I drink tea to relax and I have a Pavlovian response to the smell after opening a box of tea leaves or a teabag like Sadaf Earl grey. I’d love a tea scented fragrance!

  • Bryant Worley says:

I enjoy chai tea, so I’d really like to try this. What I really enjoyed was the way the notes were described as coming together, making it seen as though the smell is going to be fantasmagorical. Waldorf, MD, USA

  • Nothing like the smell of hot, spicy chai! Curious how this evokes the drink without leaning too far toward gourmand. Not familiar with the line but keen to try it out.

  • I have been looking for a chai scent for ages. This sounds lovely! It sounds like the perfect blend of sweet and savory. I haven’t tried Ineke before, but I hope to.

  • I have enjoyed Ineke fragrance ever since I have come to live in the Bay Area in 2004.

Chai is also my go-to beverage when I go to any coffee house. Anything with ginger and spices gets my olfactory juices enlightened.

One of my favorite Ineke sent was one she created for Anthropology, “Floral Curiosities, Angel Trumpet.”

  • Jaipur Chai strikes me as a very original take on a tea-inspired perfume, particularly the use of rose and suede to balance the composition. My favorite Ineke perfume is Evening Edged In Gold, which always sparks compliments when I wear it. I would love to win a bottle or sample of Ineke Jaipur Chai. Thank you, CaFleureBon and Ineke, for the beautiful perfume, wonderfully written review, and generous giveaway!

Ineke Jaipur Chai sounds like an amazing fragrance. I love Chai Tea with the spicyness, cinnamon, milk, and how this fragrance smooths out the spicyness with cedar, guaiac wood, and suede. Based on this review this may be my favorite Ineke Parfum. I am from the USA.

  • I have always wanted to try Ineke Perfumes but haven’t yet. I love this wonderful medley of spices. It sounds so perfect for winter.
    I live in the USA.

  • I love reading that it’s …”the perfect scent to savour on a damp grey day whilst listening to the patter of the storm”. I love when it storms. I love the notes especially vanilla and rose.
I don’t have any favorite since I’m seeing this for the first time here.

  • Kirsten Castagnola says:

I have never tried Ineke, yet this scent sounds absolutely delicious! Chai is my all time favorite, but the rose and suede are incredibly intriguing!!! I am in Florida USA Thanks for the opportunity!

  • This sounds like one of those fragrances that gives you such a nostalgic feeling when you smell it. I could imagine myself listening to the rain while inhaling the aromas from a hot mug of tea right there along with the author. I love the smell of chai tea, and I really want to smell this, along with all the other Ineke fragrances, none of which I have tried yet.

Thanks for the draw, and for always bringing such beautiful fragrances to our attention!

  • Great review by Lauryn and I loved her descriptions of how the fragrance develops! I am intrigued because this is the first gourmand and it has none of the sweetness of typical gourmands and has balance. I love tea fragrances and this one sounds really amazing to me. My favorite line is: “She imbues this delicious, enveloping scent with traditional chai spices and steamed milk, rounded with rose and smooth woods – the perfect scent to savour on a damp grey day whilst listening to the patter of the storm.” Thanks for the giveaway and I live in the US!

  • Hi, I have not tried any Ineke fragrances. I have been to Jaipur, many years ago (The Pink City). I would be interested to try a scent inspired by Chai created from the location of San Francisco, an interesting confluence! USA.
