INDULT Paris Manakara Review (Francis Kurkdjian) 2006 + A Hidden Gem Giveaway

INDULT Manakara review

INDULT Paris Manakara by Olya Bar

I immediately spritzed on INDULT Paris Manakara upon ripping open the package. I admit I have zero patience with perfume mail; I’m sure many of you can relate. At first, it’s all about the rich, almost nostalgic scent of rose candies – the kind that takes you back to childhood days spent at the candy store. As the day went on, this fragrance morphed. The lychee and coconut notes start playing a sensual dance on your skin, intermingling with the lushness of rose petals. If the beginning is reminiscent of rose candies, each dusted with sweet powdered sugar, the heart becomes a sumptuous fruit liquor. The mouthwatering lychee, muddled with coconut milk and fleshy rose petals, kind of liquor. It’s jammy and tart, leaving a creamy, custard-like trail with a hint of burnt sugar. This nuance is borrowed from Tihota, a renowned vanilla perfume in the brand’s lineup, which I consider one of the best vanilla-centric fragrances.

Inspired by the wild heart of Madagascar’s famed lychee village, think of it as a rebellious twist on the sweet, honeyed essence of fruit interlaced with mysterious floral undertones. A tantalizing fusion of tropical and ripe red fruits with a soft floral essence. A dessert for the senses, it’s a custardy, sweet fruit delight subtly infused with rose water.

Francis Kurkdjian is a maestro in the world of fragrance who shows his genius in every perfume. INDULT Paris Manakara is undoubtedly one of them. He masterfully drowns the roses in this syrupy liquor, and when each one reemerges, it drips with lychee caramel and is impossible not to fall in love with. A hidden gem, known mostly among true perfume connoisseurs, it was one of the first rose-lychee-centric works born over a decade earlier than most of the rose-lychee fragrances we have today. Proving once again how much ahead of the curve Francis Kurkdjian always was.

Beguiling, flirtatious, and fabulous, INDULT Paris Manakara feels like a multitude of pink layers of tutu skirts, the sweet smell of sugared goods in the candy shop, rose-infused meringue candies popping on the tongue, and not a care in the world. Let’s pause briefly and spotlight the main star here: lychee. The lychee’s scent profile is remarkably similar to that of a lush, juicy grape, marked by a subtle, aqueous sweetness and a delicate rose-like aroma. This resemblance extends to certain varieties of Gewürztraminer wines, where the lychee-rose scent is a natural characteristic. In these wines, the rose-lychee quality is inherent to the grape variety rather than a byproduct of fermentation. It is sweet but subtle, refined, and mild, with a hint of vanillin in the background and lots of freshness. Still, it cannot be distilled. It is always recreated as an accord where it is synthetically produced by combining some of the above ingredients to satisfy an increasingly globalized world culture and the demand for its exotic scent and flavor.

NDULT Manakara first lychee rose 2006

INDULT Paris Manakara by Olya Bar

In INDULT Paris Manakara, its aqueous tonality works well in tempering with the tropical coconut and candied berry accord. It proves to be incredibly well balanced while keeping the focus on the fleshy fruit, wrapped in an enveloping custard hug, reminiscent of a warm pastry topped with fluffy meringue.

Perhaps not a fragrance for the office, but just like decadent desserts and all the delicious things in life, there is a time when you will yearn for it, savoring every spritz with utmost pleasure.

Notes: Damask pink rose, Bulgarian red rose, lychee from Madagascar, coconut note, candied berry accord, vanilla, custard note (chantilly cream)  musk.

Bottle was kindly gifted to me by the brand but opinions are always my own.

I have been wanting to try this fragrance! I love lychee notes in fragrances! The quote that appealed to me the most was “ Perhaps not a fragrance for the office, but just like decadent desserts and all the delicious things in life” literally made me want to spray this on immediately! The only fragrance I have tried was Thiota and I loved it so much! I live in NJ

  • A good rose scent that doesn’t read as “matronly” is always on my radar. The description of a candied rose with the lychee and coconut notes coming out in the dry down combined with the rose that feels natural for a well balanced scent. USA

  • womaningold says:

Wait, what, Manakara Indult? I always wanted this baby but couldn’t afford. I would love to win it. I am a huge fan of Francis Kurkdjian. Thank you
    Sincerely,

  • I love all of Indult’s fragrances and with all the new releases, it’s wonderful to read a reminder that oldies are still very goodies. For me, the connection to Gewürztraminer is spot on. As always, a pleasure to read! Thank you to Indult for the generous giveaway, to Ça Fleure Bon for hosting the chance to win, and to Olya for the great review <3 I'm in New York!

  • Sensual and alluring scent with roses and lychee appeals to me. Kurkdjian is a maestro in the fragrance world. I have never tried this brand and am curious now. From EU.

  • The description of the beautiful sweet notes really sparked my interests because I love these kind of notes! I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU. I never tried any perfumes from Indult.

I absolutely love Francis Kurkdjian creations. His fragrances are always so well made, he’s is a mastermind. Manakara sounds like a Pavlova desert yummm. I think it would be a very nice, creamy and smooth perfume. I have never tried the INDULT Paris, so thank you for introducing it to us.
I am based in EU, Thank you

  • I haven’t heard of this house before, but now I’m intrigued. They have a few in their lineup that sound really great. I love lychee and rose so I imagine Manakara to be a beautiful tropical experience. I really like the sound of the custard and coconut touches. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Olya. Best of luck to everyone. I live in NC, USA.

  • I received a sample of this fragrance many years ago, and reading this post brought me right back to my college days. I was (and still am) a sucker for lychee in fragrances, but the price point was out of reach for a broke college student. This review is exactly how I remember it: rose, which gives way to lychee, then a sugary, vanilla-y sweetness. I had all but forgotten about this one, but I’m glad I got to relive the experience a little bit through this review! I’m located in Arizona.

  • wandering_nose says:

Thank you Olya, this was such a pleasure to read! Since I have rediscovered rose in fragrances for myself, I have been drawn to either the dark, mysterious and sultry or the girly, sparkling and fresh renditions of the queen of flowers in perfume creations. Having Tihota on my wish list for a number of years now, I was instantly intrigued by Olya’s review. Any iteration of rose dipped in powder, coconut or custard is a big YES for me straight away, and when it is composed by the absolute genius that Maestro Kurkdjian is, then it feels like a must try. I love the girly and refreshing quality that lychee unmistakably lends to rose and generally floral fragrances. This line from Olya’s review put the ultimate stamp of approval on Manakara for me: “It’s jammy and tart, leaving a creamy, custard-like trail with a hint of burnt sugar.” I would ask for no more when I want to feel carefree and just happy. After falling in love with the vanilla-centric masterpiece that Tihota is, Manakara is now my second dream from the repertoire of INDULT Paris. Thank you from the EU

  • David Furman says:

Lately I’ve been wearing a lot of rose and oud combos but I’ve never experienced an exceptionally sweet rose. This sounds borderline gourmand, fruity and floral. Nothing sounds too dark or dampening to the scent profile. I like what I’ve read and I’m very open minded to the note of rose now owning several niche frags with it in it. Please let me win the 50ml so I can broaden my horizon and learn to love it. From Jacksonville, NC

  • Melissa Thompson says:

I love how decadent this scent sounds. You had me at “jammy… leaving a creamy, custard-like trail with a hint of burnt sugar”. I’m enamored with deep, burnt sugar scents. I’m not sure if I want to wear this or drip it over a bowl of whipped cream. I have a sample of Tihota, a creamy and lovely vanilla.

  • Olya’s review of INDULT Paris Manakara is an exquisite journey through fragrance, invoking nostalgic memories and sensory delights. Her vivid descriptions of the evolving scent from rose candies to a fruit liquor, all infused with the genius touch of Francis Kurkdjian, captivated me. The way she details the nuances of lychee and its resemblance to Gewürztraminer wines adds an intriguing layer to understanding this perfume’s complexity. Her comparison to a decadent dessert and the anticipation for the perfect moment to indulge in this scent resonated deeply. A beautifully written exploration of a perfume that’s a true delight for the senses!

Unfortunately haven’t tried any of the Indult fragrances.

  • I have never heard of this house or fragrance, but I certainly have heard of Francis Kurkdjain and have not encountered a bad scent.
The coconut might be a challenge for me.
    Would love to try.

The description of rose and lychee in this review wants me to try this so badly, but alas, I don’t live in a city that has a retailer that carries Indult. Fruity rose scents are the only kind of rose fragrances I tend to like. Tihota is one of my all time favorite vanillas, so would love to try this. I live in California

  • INDULT Paris Manakara seems like a rose composition but with a lychee twist. its quite a sweet composition that is not suited for workplace but rather social gatherings. I am in US.

  • I really enjoyed the review by Olya. Francis Kurkdjian has an incredible record of fragrances and makes me more excited for this fragrance especially since it’s from a house that I’m learning of from the first time. Manakara sounds like an incredible sweet gourmand fragrance for spring, which Olya did an incredible job describing the fragrance and the scent profiles. I’ve yet to try any INDULT fragrances, but will definitely look out for them in the future.

I’m a huge fan of roses, so I can’t wait to try this.
What really sparked my interest in Manakara is this part: “think of it as a rebellious twist on the sweet, honeyed essence of fruit interlaced with mysterious floral undertones. A tantalizing fusion of tropical and ripe red fruits with a soft floral essence. A dessert for the senses, it’s a custardy, sweet fruit delight subtly infused with rose water.”
    Who can resist that??

  • Lychee is a note that I haven’t got in any perfume in my collection. Would really love to try this, since I admire Francis Kurkdijan so I am expecting great thing from this perfume. Thanks for a great review and the opportunity!

  • The juice is so pink! Interested to see what Francis K did here, I like the description “The mouthwatering lychee, muddled with coconut milk and fleshy rose petals, kind of liquor.” Always nice to smell a tropical scent, I quite like them.

  • I Want to feel rose candy vibes. Kurkidijans fave work for me is Amarys Femme. He has a great cataloge. Would really love to win. Im from eu

  • Rose is a favorite note of mine, more so if the nose behind the fragrance is Francis Kurkdjian. I am really curious about Indult Manakara. Thanks for the nice review and for the giveaway as well!

  • Regis Monkton says:

I’d love to try INDULT Paris Manakara. I’m always interested in trying new and/or interesting rose-centric fragrances. I’d like to see how the rose pairs with the lychee and the other ingredients. The only other fragrance I’ve tried which includes lychee is Perfumology’s “Sudu Te”, and I did like that one. I appreciate Olya’s review, e.g. when she mentions that rose and lychee pair in “certain varieties of Gewürztraminer wines, where the lychee-rose scent is a natural characteristic. In these wines, the rose-lychee quality is inherent to the grape variety rather than a byproduct of fermentation”: it gives me a pretty good understanding of this fragrance. I haven’t tried anything from Indult, but I’ve very interested in trying this one and Tihota. I live in the U.S.A.

  • i love almost everything by mfk, so i’m sure this is a hit! coconut, berry and custard are such fun scents, especially combined with rose and lychee. the mental image of pink tutu skirts is such a cute way to envision this fragrance. i haven’t tried indult, but i trust this scent is phenomenal.

  • A decadent yet fresh dessert with plenty of lychee, coconut and candied berry, giving off a meringue vibe! Sounds absolutely delicious and I’d love to try it, never having sampled any Indult before.
    Thanks!

  • Having experienced the beauty that is Indult Tihota, I was immediately taken by Indult Manakara and so glad to see Francis Kurkdjian was the nose behind it as he has to be in my top 3 list of creators. I’m not at all surprised by Olya’s reaction to Manakara 🙂 I’m in TX USA

  • Shibuichi2000 says:

I am usually not a rose fan, but I’d be willing to sample anytime a rose with Kurkdjian signature on it.
Reading Olya’s review, that’s exactly how I envisioned the scent – pink. As for the lychee, I really have no idea what to expect, considering I live in a country where we grow apples and pears :). In Europe, that is.

  • Even if I am a male, I do appreciate and wear quite often the roses that Francis Kurkdjian created for various houses and his included, my favorite fragrance so far being Satin Oud. Therefore, a rose fragrance from this genius is always a good idea in my books!
    Thank you!

  • Indult Paris Manaka sounds like a delectable, luscious gourmand. The rose lychee blend is a feminine without being juvenile. The coconut and musk notes seem like a fluffy confection. I loved Olya’s description of the fleshy fruit wrapped in an enveloping custard hug. I’ve not tried any Indult fragrances before, I’m in MD, USA.

  • Olya’s evaluation of INDULT Paris Manakara takes us on a splendid olfactory journey, evoking memories and indulging the senses. Her vibrant portrayals of the fragrance’s transformation, from rose candies to fruity liquor, all bearing the distinctive mark of Francis Kurkdjian, fascinated me. The meticulous depiction of lychee and its similarity to Gewürztraminer wines adds a fascinating dimension to comprehending the intricacies of this perfume. Her likening it to a luxurious dessert and the anticipation of the opportune moment to savor this fragrance struck a chord with me. It’s a beautifully articulated exploration of a perfume that truly enchants the senses!
I own a bottle of Tuberose Le Galion.
Much love from NY, US! 🙂

  • What a nice review. I sampled Manakara once, many years ago, along with Isvaraya. Both are gorgeous. One thing that intrigued me about Olya’s review is the mention of a coconut accord, which I’m eager to smell again.

Thank you to Indult for this generous draw opportunity. I live int the US.

  • Ooooh lychee! It’s one of my favorite fruits…light, sweet, and refreshing but with a truly intoxicating and tropical taste. I love that it comes into season during our fall so it provides a lovely escape for the cooler weather. The other notes sound so complementary and on the whole this perfume sounds so delicious and I really appreciate how Olya pointed out that it is still a very balanced perfume. I have not tried anything by Indult before and this one sounds like a perfect intro! I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway.

  • I am a fan of Francis Kurkdjian, but have not heard about this creation. I love his Rose for Elie Saab, but this one sounds even more gourmand: “aqueous tonality works well in tempering with the tropical coconut and candied berry accord. It proves to be incredibly well balanced while keeping the focus on the fleshy fruit, wrapped in an enveloping custard hug, reminiscent of a warm pastry topped with fluffy meringue”.

I would like to participate in the draw, thank you!

  • This is another wonderful perfume from my favorite perfumer, I’ve never tried it but I love everything about this perfume, notes of rose, Madagascar litchi, coconut. It is another “pearl” from maestro Kurkdjian. 🙂

  • It’s the first time hearing about this house, what a discovery this review has been to me.
Since i’m also familiar with FK fragrances i guess it will be something unique.
Trying my luck entering this giveaway.

  • Nice review Olya! I didn’t know about the existence of this fragrance with two notes that I love: rose and lychee: Now we have a lot of rose-lychee-centric fragrances, but in 2006 Mr. Kurkdjianalredy did it. I have never been to Madagascar, for me Lychees are the fruit of a small boat trip in the Mekong river where the trees full of this red fruits hang into the shores. I agree with you with the zero patience with any kind of mail: perfume or whatsoever. Mr. Kurkdjian encapsulates the most floral of lush fruits:Lychee. I agree 100% with your comment about Gewürztraminer wines and the lychee-rose flavours. By the way, there is a coffee beans in thailand with these notes: Moonstone from Chiang Mai. I want to spritz Indult and savour it.

  • What appealed to me about about Olya’s review of INDULT Paris Manakara is how Francis Kurkdjian developed this perfume and the addition of lychee being the main star, working in concert with the other notes to create this hidden gem. I’ve never tried any Indult perfumes, but would like to someday. Thank you for the opportunity. New York, USA.

  • The rose and lychee combo in Indult Paris Mankara sounds divine! I would love to try this perfume. Never tried anything else from Indult but I’ve heard great things! I’m in MN, USA.

  • Rose, coconut and musk note in one perfume? That must be wonderful. I have never tried any of Indult perfume yet. Thank you for the draw. I live in Europe.

  • wallygator88 says:

Thank you for the fun review Olya.

Certainly! Here’s a condensed response focusing on the perfume notes in five sentences:

INDULT Paris Manakara, showcased in the article, unfolds as a rich symphony of perfume notes. It begins with the nostalgic scent of rose candies before evolving into a sensual blend of Damask pink rose, Bulgarian red rose, Madagascar lychee, and coconut. Francis Kurkdjian’s artistry shines through in the nuanced combination, offering a fruit liquor essence mingled with creamy, custard-like trails and hints of burnt sugar. Each note harmonizes intricately, creating an indulgent sensory experience akin to decadent desserts, culminating in a sophisticated composition of sweet, floral, and creamy aromas.

I would love to try this house. I have not smelt any Indult fragrance before.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • I have heard rumblings of this being one Kurkdijan’s first masterpieces. Lychee is one of the notes that drew me into fragrances so I have always wanted to get my nose on this one. Olya mentions it proves to be incredibly well balanced while keeping the focus on the fleshy fruit, wrapped in an enveloping custard hug, reminiscent of a warm pastry topped with fluffy meringue…..I am highly intrigued. I have never tried any other Indult fragrances

Thank you Olya, oh my this sounds such a delicious delight, some of my favourite notes and food. As a gourmand, notes of lychee, rose, chantilly cream and Gerwurztraminer have me hooked, my mouth is watering already.

Master Kurkdjian. Sounds sweet and great. Love to try this. Have not tried INDULT Paris before. I live in EU.

  • Manakara sounds a little sweet for me, but the lychee note is an interesting focal point for a rich fruity-floral. The syrupy qualities of the fruit likely stands up to the rose beautifully. This one sounds ideal for fans of decadent gourmands.

  • foreverscents says:

I am a big fan of Reve en Cuir from Indult. In my mind, Francis Kurkdjian can do no wrong. I would love to wear a flirtatious rose scent. The lush lychee note and the vanilla note sound so warn and comforting.

  • Great review by Olya here.
INDULT Paris is a brand that I must totally try.
Manakara totally caught me off guard, starting from the point that it is inspired by the wild heart of Madagascar. Also knowing that Francis Kurdijian is the perfumer is more than a valid point to try this fragrance.
The lychee from Madagascar as a huge part of this fragrance makes me want to try it even more. I am also intrigued of the tropical notes of coconut and candied berry.

  • Yes he truly is a maestro of scent!! I can’t imagine waiting when a fragrance comes in the mail. I open and spray right away too. Love the photo with the meringues. Thanks for a chance to win this beauty!! Not familiar with this line. USA.

This must be indeed delicious. I like it is like a tutu skirt. One can wear gourmands and sweet perfumes in a edgy way, depending on occasion or clothes. The freshness and lychee is promising .

  • Francis Kurkdjian is trully a perfume maestro and I love his creations.
What appeals to me about Olya’s review of Manakara is how the fragrance morphed throughout the day – the beginning is reminiscent of rose candies, but the heart becomes a sumptuous fruit liquor – jammy and tart, leaving a creamy, custard-like trail with a hint of burnt sugar. A true dessert for the senses.

  • That’s amazing! Lychee, candied berries and Francis Kurkdjian??? Woof! Beguiling and flirtatious had me thinking one way about how it may smell but I love how Olya says it’s like “pink layers of tutu skirts.” That made me think, AHA! It’s that sort of flirtatious: light and almost carefree. Whispy and sweet! I’m afraid to try exotically sweet fragrances but I may need to get my nose on this. The maninka fruit of Boss the Scent surprised me, sounds like this will too!

  • Michael Prince says:

What appeals to me about Olya’s review of Indult Manakara is how she describes this in perfect detail from the rose candy to the jammy rose vibes it gives off complimented by Lychee, Coconut, and the infamous Vanilla note Tihota is known for. Besides the fact that it’s perfumed by the one and only Maison Francis Kurkdjian really has my interest. I have tried Indult Tihota and it’s an absolute masterpiece. I am from the USA.
