In Praise of Perfumes: Neela Vermeire Creations Ashoka, Niral and Trayee (Bertrand Duchaufour) + Vita Contemplativa Giveaway

Doing nothing is nearly impossible these days, I don’t mean the lost on the internet doom scrolling ‘doing nothing’, but the kind of doing nothing that allows your brain to slow and day dream, connect the dots and find new ways of seeing and thinking about the world, rather than just acting and reacting with only a surface engagement. One of my new favourite thinkers is Byung-Chul Han, a South Korean-born philosopher and cultural theorist living in Germany. He makes a compelling case for the value of inactivity in his recent book, Vita Contemplativa: In Praise of Inactivity. According to Han, without moments of pause or hesitation, our actions become mere blind reactions. He believes that life derives its “radiance” from inactivity, but in our fast-paced lives, we are losing the ability to be inactive. Even leisure, which should provide a break from work, has become part of the same logic of constant activity. Turning our every action into content to be consumed on social media.

Byung-Chul Han

Byung-Chul Han via Wikipedia and Vita Contemplativa via Polity Press

Han argues that leisure time lacks both the intensity of life and contemplation. Instead of being a time for living freely, it has become a time we kill to avoid boredom, a dead time rather than a time of true freedom and vitality. Although Han’s book is described as an ode to the art of being still, his definition of inactivity may surprise you. He challenges the notion that inactivity is synonymous with laziness. Instead, he presents it as a powerful tool for fostering creative thought. Inactivity, according to Han, is not the opposite of activity but rather something that nourishes and fuels it. We have forgotten that inactivity, which may not produce anything tangible, represents a vibrant and intense form of life. It is precisely in these moments of stillness that we can find happiness and fulfilment. Inactivity, in Han’s view, is the fundamental formula for true happiness.

Neela Vermeire Creations Creative Director Neela Vermeire

Neela Vermeire and Bertrand Duchaufour

For me this is where perfume at its best comes in, it takes me out of the world letting me escape into a more dream like and meditative state, especially these beautiful works from Neela Vermeire Creations Ashoka, Niral and Trayee composed by Bertrand Duchaufour, each of which feel like mediations themselves.

Neela Vermeire Creations Ashoka

Neela Vermeire Creations Ashoka image courtesy of the brand

2013’s Neela Vermeire Creations Ashoka opens with a sharp, invigorating blend of aromatic herbs and fresh greens, accompanied by the close to heady scent of hyacinth. As the fragrance develops, waxy floral notes are joined by fig leaf, enhancing the greenery and giving the impression that the stems are blooming with creamy, luscious flowers. Hidden within the opening are hints of sandalwood and ylang-ylang, with the sandalwood’s sour intensity harmonizing beautifully with the hyacinth and lotus, while the rose conceals the ylang-ylang until it’s ready to reveal its full bloom. The presence of cassis maintains the green essence of Ashoka, but it’s the soft, powdery iris that truly transforms the sandalwood into a silky sensation. Osmanthus delicately teases out sweet fruity nuances, accentuating the subtle elements of the sandalwood and evoking memories of Guerlain’s Samsara, as jasmine joins forces with ylang-ylang and sandalwood, yet  Neela Vermeire Creations Ashoka’s garden of scents is even more opulent, creamy, and complex, radiating a profound sense of joy and contentment. With time, the creaminess deepens, enriched by resinous notes and vanilla, while the lotus imparts a waxy texture. The florals gradually transform into a soft, sensual leather and the powdery nuances become a delicate plume of sandalwood incense smoke, enveloping the senses and transporting the mind to a captivating realm. Neela Vermeire Creations Ashoka is a sandalwood perfume that is truly breath taking, inducing a profound state of relaxation.

Neela Vermeire Creations Niral

Neela Vermeire Creations Niral image courtesy of the brand.

Neela Vermeire Creations Niral debuted in 2018 and envelops us in a gentle mist of delicate flowers, as a sparkle of pink pepper gradually gives way to a sweet, honeyed rose and an exquisite iris that creates a cloud-like sensation. This iris exudes warmth and happiness, instantly putting you in a relaxed and positive mood. The soft, abstract florals add a cosy touch, along with a balsamic richness reminiscent of mimosa that lingers in the background. As Neela Vermeire Creations Niral develops, subtle woody hints of cardamom begin to emerge, creating a sense of intrigue. It shimmers with a champagne-like fizz, slightly sweet with tantalizing aromatic notes that unveil green facets, as the pink pepper gently bursts on your skin like tiny bubbles. Niral feels like a warm embrace, as if you were wrapped in a sumptuous silk garment adorned with intricate embroidery, yet incredibly soft. Gradually, the cardamom evolves into a powdery woody sensation, accompanied by sandalwood and jasmine. Niral’s floral and powdery haze surrounds you and exudes a beautiful and sensual musk. These notes intertwine with the iris, creating soft ripples and textures that exude warmth and delight. There’s a deep balsamic richness, almost boozy, as if you were savouring a buttery, bread-like champagne, all wrapped in silk and adorned with a creamy floral elegance. Words truly fail to capture the emotions that Niral evokes for me. It feels like basking in the warm glow of the sun, with delightful aromas wafting through the air.  Neela Vermeire Creations Niral is a perfume that beckons you to snuggle close and lose yourself in its captivating allure. It tells a stunning tale of iris that is truly unique.

Neela Vermeire Creations Trayee

Neela Vermeire Creations Trayee image courtesy of the brand.

Neela Vermeire Creations Trayee was launched in 2011, and opens like an explosive new thought, jolting us awake from our comfortable daze with a refreshing blend of zesty cool ginger and woody cinnamon, intertwined with herbal and aromatic greens. It’s dry and slightly bitter, yet carries an incense-like quality with creamy basil smoothing out the edges of the spices and aromatics. Creamy vanilla and woody notes follow suit, infused with cardamom for a luxurious and aromatic experience that brings together the green and spicy elements seamlessly. I find this creamy cardamom blend to be deeply soothing, each sniff slowing down time as floral scents unfurl, sparking new ideas and reflections. Jasmine adds a dark yet soft touch, shimmering with a hint of clove-like desire with a gentle, rich suede undertone.

Gradually, a rich darkness emerges, as the jasmine transforms into a warm, incense-like aroma with deep, earthy nuances. There’s a subtle smokiness with medicinal hints that enhance the herbal and spiritual essence, drawing out the cardamom, clove, and Laos Oud, an oud that’s rich with tangy tamarind and creamy woody facets. Trayee introduces sweeter notes amidst the herbal backdrop, while a soft oud incense lingers in the air. Its fragrance encapsulates the complexity of human nature, where our thoughts may conflict with our emotions, yet it’s this very contradiction that defines our humanity. We are not one-dimensional beings, but rather a blend of light and darkness, much like the swirling plumes of incense smoke that invite contemplation as we lose ourselves in its elegant simple essence.

These three fragrances created by Bertrand Duchaufour in partnership with Neela Vermeire are like a soothing escape from reality, allowing me to unwind and let my mind wander. They take ordinary scents and transform them into something extraordinary, bringing a sense of happiness and wonder.

Disclaimer: Samples of Neela Vermeire Creations Ashoka, Niral and Trayee were kindly sent to me by Neela Vermeire Creations, the book and thoughts are my own.

  • I completely agree that instead of this being a time for living freely, it has become a time we kill to avoid boredom, a dead time rather than a time of true freedom and vitality. Like the kind of doing nothing that allows your brain to slow and day dream doesn’t exist anymore… Constant rush, stress, work… Exhausting!
J’s reviews are really amazing! Though I’ve never tried these perfumes, thanks to his descriptions I can truly sense each and every one of them.
Hope I will try them soon!
    Hugs from Croatia, EU.

  • I would love to win Ashoka, firstly because it made me think of Ahsoka Tano, and secondly and most importantly, because it sounds like a glorious sandalwood which, drying down together with the lovely florals and leather, induces a profound sense of relaxation.
    Sounds really therapeutic!
    From the EU.

  • I can’t agree more. How beautiful is the concept of taking time with a perfume, that’s the best “dress” we can wear. It’s not about being lazy or unproductive, but rather about recognizing the importance of balance. Not a coincidence that they all have flowers/green notes to me! I wish I can try them, I will buy some samples. Thanks for the great advice! I’m from EU.

  • My God, I’d love to embrace the concept of “taking time” with Ashoka! Based on J’s review, that makes me think of silent woods in Japan. When I’m sad, I always think about their woods. Here is where I felt at home, in peace, no rush or stress. Ashoka has the same vibes to me. Thanks for giving us this chance! Best wishes from EU!!

  • Maria Malaveci says:

I completely agree that people are obsessed with a constant need to be doing or going somewhere. I believe what’s truly important is connection with others and conversation. A time to slow down is so important. All these perfumes sound lovely. I’m a registered user in the US.

  • This piece was captivating. I’m currently wearing a sample of Ashoka for the second time and it truly is breathtaking. J’s writing is so evocative and the concept of slowing down is something I’ve been working on with my therapist. No screens, but perhaps sitting outside and noticing the smells, sounds and everything you would normally miss. There is true relaxation in listening to your surroundings.

  • I loved J’s perspective of perfume taking them into a dreamlike place, and inactivity actually being a vehicle for creativity. I would especially love to win Niral, as an iris lover! I am in the US.

  • Thank you for touching so beautifully on this topic of restfulness – it’s something we as a culture need to re-learn how to do. How interesting to relate it to fragrance – actually I think it’s appropos, as excellent fragrance really does require time to unfold all its depth. I love Neela’s perfumes – I have gotten to sample Ashoka, and loved it! However, Niral is new to me, and the notes sound right up my alley. Thanks for this generous draw. I live in the US.

  • What a lovely piece of writing!
It’s encouraging me to leave the computer, turn on some music, and practice my yoga. Thanks.
I love this sentence–‘They take ordinary scents and transform them into something extraordinary, bringing a sense of happiness and wonder.’ I think that that describes the type of fragrance that I enjoy most.
I live in the US and I would love to experience Ashoka.

  • whimsical diva says:

My mornings are quite hectic, but oddly enough, taking a moment to decide which fragrance to wear to work helps me slow down a bit, and brings a small burst of joy to an otherwise busy time of the day. It usually involves examining what the weather is like outside, and picking something that will go well with it.

This was a truly lovely article, which managed to be rather evocative. Going by the descriptions in this article, I’d love to try Ashoka (I find the combination of fig leaf and sandalwood very intriguing) or Niral (I’m a sucker for anything iris, especially when combined with notes like caradamon and woods). I live in the US.

  • I think these are all so complex and interesting that it makes it very difficult to choose. Do I go with a a slightly animalic iris? A fig? Or a spicy wood? I think Trayee has won out. In maryland.

  • Ah what an introduction. I wish I could make my self to just be still sometimes. One can benefit so much mentally and physically. I should read more about this philosopher.
Neela’s creations have always intrigued me. I tried some but not many. The three presented here all some amazing. Her creations are always very comples and and well blended. The most intriguing for me from these reviews is definitely Ashoka with its fig and green notes, mixed with florals and the amazing sandalwood. Sounds like the best choice for my taste. I’m from Illinois US.

  • These reviews mention scents that evoke memories of Neela Vermeire’s past and the beauty of landscapes she encountered. Slowing down is an art in itself, in our fast-paced world, where time rushes by like a fleeting fragrance note, it’s essential to pause, inhale, and savor the nuances. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

  • themuskymaven says:

I love this review! I too feel that it’s essential to slow down in order to fully appreciate the true beauty and intricacy of perfumes such as these. I’ve had the honor of trying two of them and they are indeed exquisite. I’d love to win a bottle of Niral. I’m located in Los Angeles California US

  • I appreciate the thought of inactivity as a time of contemplation and for fostering creative thought. Especially in today’s hyper-connected world, down time is essential for recharging mind and soul. I have one of Neela Vermiere’s discovery kits and there is not one fragrance I do not love. I would choose Niral if I was fortunate enough to be chosen. I’m in the US.

  • Years ago, I used to have a pretty regular meditation practice. Then I fell away from it. This post reminded me of its benefits…it is, indeed, so hard to do nothing in 2024. If I were lucky enough to win a bottle, I’d go with Ashoka, whose sandalwood and fig sounds meditative to me. I’m in Oklahoma, USA.

  • Ramses Perez says:

Tráete is one of those scents that it’s highly talked about and regarded as one of the best by this house and by Bertrand Duchaufour. Yes, slowing down it’s necessary at times: our bodies ask for it, our minds begs us to do it and fragrances do help us realize in the silence and tranquility of the power of stillness. In our moments of peace we can really reevaluate everything and fragrances are a vehicle to do so. I’d love to win Trayee. Cheers from the USA.

  • Everything I’ve tried from Neela Vermeire has been excellent and evocative, great stuff. Ashoka is a good choice for a meditative perfume as it is tranquil, airy, and somehow sensual.

  • I find it very difficult to slowndown and let your thoughts wander in this modern, fast paced era we now live in. Fragrance helps me to relax and take time away from the constant screen time (work and leisure) that has become a more commonality of this day and age. I have had the pleasure of sampling Trayee a few times in the past, but that is the only fragrance I have tried from Neela Vermeire. I would choose Ashoka based on the notes. I really enjoy the aesthetic look of the bottles as well. Thank you for the draw! I’m in the U.S. — NY.

  • Sherin Thomas says:

I always love how Neela’s fragrance exudes elegance . I love to try this some day. From PA, USA

  • Although all three sound amazing, I must say that Ashoka is the one singing my name. I love sandalwood, I love Samsara and if it is as you very nice put it: “a sandalwood perfume that is truly breath taking, inducing a profound state of relaxation”, then I want to take my time exploring Ashoka.
    Thanks! EU

  • I have long been a NVC fan and find myself feeling grounded each time I catch a whiff of Trayee and Asoka, both of which I own. I find that when I wear a perfume that engages me, even during a busy work day, it actually helps me focus on taking a moment of inactivity and ground myself in the sensory contemplation of scent. I find Asoka to be more contemplative than Trayee. Would love to add Niral or a backup Asoka to my collection of NVC.

  • Ooh I’m in love with all of these. And what a decision. I’m almost out of my Ashoka but Niral is the one of hers I do not have a full bottle (except for the new Extrait Mohur) so I must choose Niral. Hoping and praying I win this time! Thank you so much for the chance to win In California

  • This is just fabulous! One of my favorite houses to be so generous and give away one of those gorgeous perfumes! An excellent piece that does full justice to the quality of Neela Vermeire perfumes. I have the Trayee in my collection and it’s one of my favorites. I would absolute love to try the Ashoka! Living in the EU

  • (Colorado, USA) Of all three, Trayee seems most beguiling. While the descriptions of the other two perfumes sounded so lovely, the powdery notes are just not my favorites. But a creamy cardamom? Yes, please! And the concept of “inactivity” is most certainly something that I actually do seek out (waiting in line, drinking a cup of coffee at home) but that I definitely need to practice more…especially as election season is upon us in the U.S. and I get caught up in doom scrolling. I plan to spritz on something lovely, vote, and enjoy a moment of peace.

  • The concept of slowing down is hard to achieve nowadays as the world moves faster, there is more information to process, also more perfumes to enjoy. But the brain needs to rest and slow down. I agree that inactivity is good for happiness. Maybe those perfumes created by Bertrand Duchaufour for Neela Vermeire Creations are meditative and will help us escape into a dream like state of mind. I am interested in Trayee as it is supposed to be a spicy, herbal, aromatic, refreshing, comfortable scent. From EU.

  • I want to win Neela Vermeire Creations Niral, i like the rose with spicies. I hate doomscroling and I don’t like losing time on it. Im from eu

  • This is such a nice article. I do feel that having a still time is being treated as ‘let me scroll time’ and not what the original intent was – freeing yourself from distractions.
I am in the US and would like to win a bottle od Ashoka.

  • I love the idea of ‘doing nothing’ in an enjoyable leisurely almost meditative way. My favorite perfumes put me in this place of simply being and having a joyful moment where I’m not necessarily doing anything but breathing and enjoying life. Thanks J, for these beautiful reviews. I’ve heard so many positive things about Neela. I think I’d like to have a meditative moment with Ashoka to revisit the magic of a Bertrand Duchaufour fig leaf.

  • Sorohan Adriana says:

Because I love Samsara Guerlain I like to win Neela Vermeire Creations Ashoka and this is my choice.
    I am from EU

  • From the cloud-like sensation, champagne like fizz and the warm embrace…..Niral captured my attention. I adore iris and recently got into musk. I mostly have heard about Trayee for years which also sounds lovely. Bertrand is so talented!! Bring on the happiness and wonder. How very kind of Neela Vermeire to sponsor this giveaway. My choice would be Niral. USA.

  • Neela Vermeire Creations Ashoka is the promise of inducing relaxation and transporting the mind to a captivating realm and adds an extra layer of allure to this sandalwood perfume.
    Hugs from EU

  • As a mental health professional, I am all too familiar with the extreme effects that stress and anxiety can cause. I see it every day at work, but also experience it first hand. It is critical that we all take a moment to slow down, to put everything on pause and just “be”. One of the main things I love about fragrances is their transportive and meditative properties. My favorite way to enjoy fragrances is to [heavily] apply, put in my earbuds, lay back, and close my eyes – letting the scent and the music take me away for a while.

As of now, Bombay Bling is the only fragrance I have tried from Neela Vermeire, and , boy, is it good. If it is any testament at all to the quality of their other offerings, these are sure to be a treat. Niral and Trayee sound most interesting to me; but if I were chosen, I think I would have to go with Trayee. Though I thoroughly enjoy florals, spicy resinous scents are still my favorite and I really like the idea of the clove, cinnamon, vanilla, oud, cardamom, elemi, and incense swirling together. Plus, I saw Steven’s review of this one and he said its balsamic touches go a bit medicinal, which I absolutely love. It sounds like a true spice bomb and I am here for it. Best of luck to everyone. I live in NC, USA.

  • Never tried anything from Neela, but I would love to test Ashoka. I heard only good things about this one and I am also a big fan of sandalwood, so I guess I am going to like it. Thank you & good luck to everyone!

  • I have come across about Neela Vermeire from this blog. The writing of this article and her creation of Ashoka is something i really want to see it. Looking for more information on this.

  • Wow, all of these sound gorgeous! Absolutely, so important to slow down, not only for physical and mental recovery, but also to promote growth! Being still allows us to examine thoughts and ideas more creatively than just reacting to stimuli.

  • AromaDulce73 says:

I love this statement from Han: “leisure time lacks both the intensity of life and contemplation. Instead of being a time for living freely, it has become a time we kill to avoid boredom, a dead time rather than a time of true freedom and vitality”. Sooooo true. Neela Vermeire Creations Trayee was would be my pick. The blend of ginger and woody cinnamon sounds very soothing.

  • I’ve never heard of Bhyung-Hul Chan but I like the idea of inactivity as I’ve seen it manifest in my toddler. At times when I let him be bored he comes up with some really creative games, artworks or songs which he wouldn’t have done if I let him use a screen at those moments. The same should go for us. Anyhow thanks for that food for thought, J.
I really love Neela Vermeire and have been an admirer for a long time. I agree with Çafleurebon that Trayee is a real modern masterpiece and J’s review really leans in on the spiciness and well blendedness of this perfume. Marit in the Netherlands

  • All three perfumes sound worth wearing by the written reviewers. I didn’t slow down to understand slowing down, sorry. For the draw I’d like the Trayee. US

  • All three sounds lovely, but Trayee sounds like it’s right up my alley for sure, with those gentle spices. That’s a calming state for me. The idea of doing nothing to enhance our times of Doing other things is wonderful and I totally agree that we spend too much of our days killing time instead of living it. The imagination can’t really take off if we spend all the down time feeding it with other people’s posts and other people’s opinions. I love the idea of perfume helping us feed our own imaginations in the meditative moments when nothing else is going on and we sit quietly, simply being alive for 60 whole seconds. And smelling marvelous!

  • Yes J, don’t just do something, sit there!!! I’m one who makes a living helping people slow down and get in touch with their bodies. As a massage therapist I try to help people access a liminal space that exists between sleep and wakefulness where their nervous systems can reach a new state of coherence. I’ve sample 2 out of 3 of these and it’s a tough decsirion but I’d go with the beautiful Trayee should I win. Wonderful reviews from J as always.
    I’m in Brooklyn, NY

  • I agree that slowing down and quieting the mind is essential to creativity and equanimity. I know I’ve been guilty of shutting out my thoughts by business with tasks that in the long run probably are unimportant. I love the idea of perfume helping us to pause, reflect and slow down. I have Niral and love it. I’d love to have a bottle of Ashoka…sounds lovely. I’m in Missouri, USA

  • I have recently thought a lot about how I need to slow down more. I look at the wonder my cat has for the rain falling outside right now and the intensity of sound hitting the pavement, the smell of petrichor, and realize that letting yourself be romanced by these things is truly what life is for. And especially why I love perfume so much. I love the descriptions of all 3 of these fragrances so much. And feel most intrigued by Trayee as it embodies such an idea of yin Yang/light and dark. From Portland, OR. USA

  • A beautiful article, love that the concept of slow living is mentioned here as I find it almost unreachable today, though most of us crave deeply for it.
I’m a fan of Neela Vermeire perfumes and based on J’s reviews I’m drawn to Ashoka – a sandalwood perfume that is truly breath taking, inducing a profound state of relaxation and Trayee that has a refreshing blend of zesty cool ginger and woody cinnamon in the opening, intertwined with herbal and aromatic greens.

  • Wow, three splendid creations, these seem like luxurious and at the same time very “private” perfumes, fragrances for the soul. Trayee is a perfume that I would like to wear, I don’t have any perfume from this prestigious brand.

  • Thank you for providing this platform to share my thoughts on the profound value of slowing down and embracing moments of inactivity in our fast-paced lives. The insights from Byung-Chul Han resonate deeply with me, highlighting the importance of contemplation and genuine happiness derived from stillness.
The eloquent journey through the scents, especially the enchanting blend of powdery iris notes in Niral, resonates with my olfactory preferences. The fragrances serve as a form of therapeutic escapism, allowing me to unwind and indulge in the simple pleasure of daydreaming.

Moreover, I am thrilled to enter into the giveaway, with my eyes set on the captivating Niral. The delicate mist of delicate flowers, the sweet honeyed rose, and the exquisite iris that creates a cloud-like sensation in Niral have captured my imagination. It’s not just a fragrance; it’s a warm embrace, a journey into positivity and relaxation.
I eagerly enter the giveaway, I am filled with anticipation, hoping to make Niral a cherished part of my fragrant journey.

  • This is such a precious article. It made me think of the difference of how parents just let their children have idle times, not fulfilled 100% with planned activities and entertainment, after school and on holidays. Just let them be and play as they want. Instead, parents nowadays cram intensive activities into a day, for themselves and even more for children. I don’t even have children, but I see it as a reflection of how society became. Inactivity is, indeed, radiant with God’s presence. One learns it through illness. I would pick Ashoka or Trayee, they must be beautiful.I live in the EU.

  • Thank you for sharing your insightful perspective on the value of inactivity and introducing Byung-Chul Han’s philosophy. Your connection between slowing down and Neela Vermeire Creations’ fragrances is fascinating.
Your detailed descriptions of each perfume, from the sharp invigoration of Ashoka to the cloud-like sensation of Niral and the complexity of Trayee, vividly capture the essence of these olfactory experiences. It’s evident that these fragrances hold a special place for you, providing a soothing escape and inviting moments of happiness and wonder.
Expressing a particular interest in the giveaway, especially in winning Ahsoka, your concise descriptions of Ashoka, Niral, and Trayee showcase a profound connection to their transformative qualities.

  • It sounds almost like a fairytale, this dream story of a slower life. Yet I know Vermeire and Duchaufour are the ones to take us there. I’ve tried one of the three and now look forward to the others. USA

  • Yes, this is one of the ways in which I use perfume too. Neela’s creations are perfect for that end. Being quietly receptive helps her perfumes to start to reveal themselves. I have a full bottle of Trayee, and Ashoka or Niral would be a true gift.

  • recursivemask says:

Thank you for this meditation on stillness. I hadn’t heard of the work of Byung-Chul Han and it seems I have a new thinker I need to try out. I have been working on unplugging more and taking time to let my brain wander. Truly these are all astounding fragrances. I’d be happy with any of them, but I think my first pick would be the spicy Trayee. US.

  • Really enjoyed the depth to J’s review. Neela Vermeire’s all sound incredibly complex and unique in a good way, with a progression of scents as it develops on your skin. Han’s interpretation of slowing down was very interesting to read and very agreeable, and reminds me of the idea of slowing down to enjoy life. Loved the review and if I had to pick, I would choose Ashoka.

  • I need to read this book immediately! It’s a side effect of capitalism that we feel each moment has to be filled with “productivity,” the pressure and strain of which actually makes us *less* productive and definitely unhappier. I do wonder when we started basing our self-worth on our levels of busy-ness, but it’s not healthy.
What comforting reviews for these perfumes. I would be thrilled to try any of them. I’m in the US.

  • I love perfumes that put me in a meditative state and give the sense of calmness and relaxation. Few have achieved that and for this reason I love them dearly. I am torn between Ashoka and Niral, but I must choose Niral because the notes suit me better and J’s impressions really got me curious. I would love to be all wrapped in silk and adorned with a creamy floral elegance :). Greetings from Romania, EU.

  • I love that J’s uses the concept of slowing down for introducing the amazing reviews of these wonderful perfumes.
I think that slowing down, thinking twice, meditating and take your time for doing what you need to do is very important in the estresing and speed Up times that we live now.
I love how J describe any of the there NVC perfumes.
I would like to win Niral, as I am an Iris lover.
I am posting from Lugo, Spain, (EU)

  • I’ve never heard of Byung-Chul Han before, each to his own of course, but his concept of life is something meant for others, definitely not for me ! I work at least 80 hours a week and I genuinely love every single minute of it , being a classically trained in Paris Pastry Chef was a dream i had ever since I was a kid.
As a small business owner myself, I own a bakery, I’m really happy seeing fine , and devoted people like Neela Vermeire succeed.
☆ Ashoka, other than cassis I’m on the same page with J Wearescentient. Green, fruity and floral, with cozy suede leather in the base.
☆ Niral , again I’m on the same page with J Wearescentient – the cardamom in Niral is so natural smelling. The buttery bread-like accord i go smell too , but more like Rose Water Cardamom Cookies
☆ Speaking about Trayee, i really wonder why J Wearescentient is getting so much greenness, I don’t . Not a gooey sweet gourmand of course, but I think Trayee is a really milky fragrance, that smells really similar to Ras Malai , traditional Indian dessert. Lactonic without a doubt I believe , yet spicy and calming. As a long time Pastry Chef, I’m absolutely sure Neela Vermeire told Bertrand Duchaufour to create a fragrance that would smell like Ras Malai.
Trayee I’d like to win the most
Like I said Byung-Chul Han concept of life is not for me, but I do appreciate the reviews, and the giveaway campaign
    USA

  • All the descriptions are richly compelling & Neela Vermeire’s scents do not fall short! They deserve the bright words that J. Wearescentient has presented. I’d love to read the book Vita Contemplativa. I know from my own experience that I have to slow down & focus to be able to feel creative. Perfume with soul is a great way to speed up the process. If I were fortunate to win I’d hope for Trayee. Thank you for the generous opportunity.

  • When I was starting my journey , working shifts on top of training with the vision of becoming Master Barber, at the barbershop i was working back then , there was a framed quote on the wall “To be successful, you have to have your heart in your business, and your business in your heart” . Neela Vermeire may very well have the same quote hanging somewhere in her office .
By any means no offense to J Wearescentient and Byung-Chul Han but I believe living freely is one thing, but inactivity in my opinion equals decaying for the body , mind and soul.
Ashoka sandalwood, cassis and incense with some green nuances i find captivating.
Just like Mohur Extrait , Niral is next to impossible to sample in Germany, balsamic almost boozy beauty with quality cardamom sounds great , I always acknowledge such spiritual fragrances.
Trayee symbolizes the pristine quality of the ingredients, the uniqueness and opulent feel. Comforting spicy fragrance, with incense and jasmine , all dipped by Neela in golden amber.
Bombay Bling i own , it smells fresh mango fruity, and woody, in a good, natural way.
If you happen to read the comments, please stay independent Neela.
    Trayee I’d love to win
    Thanks to all involved

  • OK, maybe winning Neela Vermeire’s Ashoka wouldn’t solve ALL my problems, but I’d be flying on cloud nine! Every Neela Vermeire perfumes I’ve sampled has been ornate and indulgent, like gold filigree, but Ashoka sparks delight like few other fragrances do. And this review and exaltation of the slowing down feels very timely for me, the statement that life derives its “radiance” from stillness resonates with me enough that I’ll look up Han after I close out of the blog today. I hope I can stretch out, slow down, and indulge in more creativity this year. Thank you for the draw, I’m in the USA.

  • J’s description of experiencing perfume as a dreamlike escape resonates with me. Scents can draw out memories or be surreal experiences, and paying attention to scent is a way of slowing down and taking notice of the world. All these perfumes sound like worlds unto themselves; I’d love to try Ashoka (US).

  • Trayee sounds incredible! I love sound of the jasmine with all those green and spicy elements. I definitely relate to the need and desire to slow down… the transportive quality of perfume definitely helps me with this. If I’m lucky enough to win I’d love to pick Trayee. I’m in MN, USA.

I enjoyed reading J’s review and comments about the lack of time to be creative and free. It reminds me of train rides when there is nothing to do but sit and wait and think. I would like to try Ashoka because it sounds beautiful! Fig notes are some of my favorites and combined with the ylang-ylang, hyacinth, and other florals sounds amazing.

  • No arguing over how others should live their lives, obviously Byung-Chul Han and J think differently, however I firmly believe an active mind cannot exist in an inactive body.
I first discovered and already sampled Neela Vermeire Creations first line of fragrances watching Redolessence videos , J Wearescentient adds a different perspective to Ashoka and Trayee, for obvious reasons Niral I don’t know.
There is indeed interesting contract between the sweeter fruity, and the sharp aromatics in Ashoka. In the drydown other than the mentioned by J Wearescentient leather, sandalwood and incense I can smell coconut too.
Niral features champagne, deep balsamic richness and floral elegance
Based on my experience, and the sample set i ordered from Neela Vermeire website unlike J basil i don’t smell, Trayee resembles Indian spiced chai tea with milk mixed with incense con burning. Not only smells fantastic, but it’s very strong too.
Trayee is my darling by Neela Vermeire , and I’m thrilled by the chance of winning a full bottle
    Thank you, and fingers crossed

  • Every philosopher, Korean, German, ancient or modern always have a story to tell, and believes he’s way is the right way , and often the only way.
I believe everyone should try to find a balance between work and rest, hop on the train that suits him , and enjoy the ride.
Neela Vermeire i believe is one of a kind person. LOVE Bombay Bling, and original Mohur, and now thanks to both of you I’m pumped for Ashoka, Niral and Trayee too.
The fresh green floral with ylang-ylang and sandalwood Ashoka, and the champagne woody balsamic Niral are so soothing but the one that grabbed my attention the most is Trayee. Smooth, balsamic fragrance with cardamom and incense , sounds fantastic. Every single aspect of the fragrance has its own place, nicely blended and adding to the whole picture. I believe Trayee would be a great fit for me.
    Thanks for the draw

J’s reflection on the importance of slowing down and embracing moments of inactivity resonated deeply with me. In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to get caught up in constant activity and overlook the value of stillness and contemplation. Byung-Chul Han’s perspective on the power of inactivity as a catalyst for creative thought is thought-provoking and reminds us of the importance of finding balance in our lives.

Moreover, J’s description of Neela Vermeire Creations’ fragrances, particularly Ashoka, Niral, and Trayee, as soothing escapes from reality is captivating. The way these scents transport the mind and evoke feelings of happiness and wonder is truly remarkable. They serve as reminders to slow down, unwind, and appreciate the beauty in simplicity.

Thank you to Neela Vermeire for their generosity in offering this special prize.
I would love to own Neela Vermeire Creations Niral.

  • If it works for you I’m perfectly fine , nevertheless to me I’d say big time NO to inactivity. I don’t have such periods , I’m constantly on the move and my life is busy , it always is and I’m loving it. You asked how we feel about the concept of slowing down, and I’m giving you my genuine thoughts about it, as far as I’m concerned there are hardly any moments for self-indulgent laziness in my life.
At the same time I’d say Massive YES to uniqueness , upscale niche and indie perfumery, daring approaches mixed with native to India aesthetics , Neela Vermeire Creations Ashoka, Niral and Trayee I’ll gladly wear.
Out of the 3 J Wearescentient choices my favorites are Niral and Trayee , Niral for the shimmers of champagne, punk pepper and iris , Trayee for the smokiness , vanilla ,there’s ginger and certain level of complexity and refinement
Bertrand Duchaufour is capable of making such classy fragrances , Trayee is my choice
    Thanks a bunch

  • I find the concept of inactivity harboring true happiness interesting. Brilliant reviews by J, who I am happy to see write so much for CaFleureBon! Ashoka seems like a lovely floral, with creamy woods and herbacious elements. Would love to try this one!

    I live in Sweden, EU.

  • I like the idea of inactivity being an opportunity for creative thinking, or at least a moment of healthy stillness. We can all use some of that in our lives. And if perfume aids that moment of quiet revry, Trayee would by my choice of these three, with its spiced incense, medicinal aspects, and complex herbal/woody facets. Nice writeup, J.

I’m in the USA. If I were to win, I’d choose NVC Trayee. Thanks!

  • I have been actively using fragrances these past months as part of my breathing exercises, a retraining exercise to help nausea, illness, and the like. It’s been a powerful part of my therapy—and anyway, any opportunity to take a long, conscious moment to slow down and smell the world is restorative and inspiring. I would love to be part of a draw, as another of Neela Vermeire’s fragrances is a favorite of mine. I am in the US and I would love to be the recipient of Ashoka.

    Hi 🙂

    I agree with J and Byung-Chul Han.
For once, it’s good to hear a call to contemplation, with no hidden incentive for productivity, nor efficiency.

The modern marketing has made a huge political recuperation on meditation. I’m quite fed up with the thinly-veiled advertising and moronic slogans that plague the internet.
(For example, sophrology is now mostly oriented as a tool to be more effective, in order to best others, and be better than others in society’s competition. The overtake of money on new age ideas is also an untold strategy to put the blame on individuals. Most of the problems take their origins on the level of the society, of the enterprises, or another collective level. When one teaches individuals to just deal with it, so soak it up, apart, it’s a strategical diversion. Private problems must be shared, to take a political turn, and invite people to act collectively).

In most mystical philosophical currents, there is this idea that being humble make you more perceptive to insight, understanding, intuition. There are advantages to be slow-paced, and to keep moment for you to be slightly bored. (like when you were a child). It also creates more place for a certain form of luck, serendipity. Cramming any moment with works and entertainments can sometimes be seen as a form of denial, a fear to turn the noise of our life down. As if we were musical instrument, we have to recreate some void in our life, in order to resonate better.

I would love to win “Niral”.
I’ve never tried it. I love all things with iris. When I read about a champagne effect, and of silk softness, I go dreaming. And I love the extra hint of purple on the bottle.

I live in the EU, in France.

  • I’m glad to see we’re taking the idea of slowing down and embracing inactivity more seriously — it’s crucial now more than ever, as the constant availability of screens and information has made us almost incapable of just sitting with ourselves, without any external stimulus or intake of content. All three perfumes sound so lovely and multi-layered — I’d love to win Ashoka! I am located in the US.

I am a big fan of doing nothing, just being, just breathing. Scented mediation is something that I often practice. I was thrilled to learn about Byung-Chul Han from J’s review. I will definitely check out his book. For the draw, I would choose Trayee. The ginger, cinnamon, wood notes, jasmine and oud sound like the perfect combination to evoke light and darkness.
    I live in the USA.

  • Slowing down is something I’m promising myself for so long, yet it is always after this and that… And it is well pointed out that “free time” often seems more like wasting it by just filling it with whatever so it passes and we can repeat a new cycle. Internet and social media, whoever useful, are a perfect day “filler”, and time killer. And that becomes a routine. Irony is that I love pensive moments, being still and appreciating the moment, place, taste, view, smell… Didn’t think of it that way but that might be what brought me to fragrance world. Something you can take with you that can make you “stop” during your day and become aware of the moment and the smell you wear, which can be such a lovely anchors to a busy day. The book is going on my list, and I would love to smell Trayee on me and be energized with mix of ginger, spices and sweetness. Greetings from Austria.

I have been curious about these scents for a while now. Slowing down seems like a losing game sometimes.. but once in a while there is a bird or a sliver of orange across the sky. Sometimes, the crystal clear voice of an unknown child, laughing, or the sound of rain, waking you up in the middle of the night. In that moment, we listen. In that moment, we slow down. And the world slows down with us. Imagine, everything stopping for a second. Bliss. I live in Romania.. thank you.

I got truly inspired to dig deeper into Byung-Chul Han’s work and his concept of inactivity as the fueling force of creativity. From my own personal experience, I have noticed that doing nothing, as much as it can be commonly perceived to be time wasting, has the power to bring back the inner balance. I used to not give myself the right to do nothing and just be; now I consider it a necessity to keep my mind at peace. My choice would be Trayee – I love me some creamy cardamom and vanilla against smoke’y and woody backdrop. Thank you for the draw! I am in the EU

  • J Wearescentient Byung-Chul Han philosophical introduction made me think of how different people are , some find inspiration by break from work and inactivity – understandable , not me through. From where I stand inactivity and deprivation of all accustomed stimulus is definitely not rest , but preparation for the tomb.
I like how deep, complex, and multi-layered Ashoka and Niral are , from the green fruity floral Ashoka to delicate honeyed rose , champagne and spicy Niral. I’d so like to know will Ashoka and Niral be as good as Trayee , my favorite from Neela Vermeire.
Trayee is just great , I’m pleasantly surprised it’s part of J Wearescentient picks. The sweet and spicy cloud is so comfortable. It’s a bit strange J is not getting a lot of sweetness in Trayee, but he’s skin is different than mine i guess. To him the fragrance is more aromatic, herbal with creamy woody facets.
I would tuck my scarf under the collar of my suit , spray some Trayee and be found of the experience , my choice
Thank you J Wearescentient, Neela Vermeire Creations

Thanks for the wonderful writeup J Wearescentient. It’s nice to see an indepth review of Neela Vermiere’s fragrances.

I really like the introduction with Byung-Chul Han’s words on staying still, with the intention of contemplation, meditation and a mind that is free to wander and undistracted by the pulls of technology.

I think in the light of this, the fragrances that really speak to me are Trayee and Ashoka. Trayee has a wonderful thought to some of the spiritual practices in India, with creamy sandalwood, spices and incense.
Ashoka is a quiet contemplation of the times of the magnificent Ashokan empire that united most of India and a time when Buddhism and other spiritual practices and learning flourished in the subcontinent. I really like the use of lotus in this scent because of the significance to the ashoka pillar lotus motif.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Even though rest , vacations and inactivity are no doubt needed once in a while , it gives you the time to think and clear your mind, the long term inactivity to me is so counterproductive.
I’m glad brands like Neela Vermeire Creations are leaning more on classical and artisanal approaches and natural ingredients , instead of futuristic technology and synthetics.
Ashoka, Niral and Trayee are different from each other but quality is definitely there. The jasmine , cassis and sandalwood Ashoka is so relaxing and Spring time fragrance. It’s very cold still where I live , so I’m leaning more toward Niral and Trayee . Niral ethereal traits I like , stepping on the rose , balsamic almost boozy foundation.
I adore the ambery and spicy fragrances with burning incense like Neela Vermeire Creations Trayee , ginger is a welcomed addition too. The creamy vanilla and woody notes sealed it , Trayee would be my choice if I happen to be the winner.

  • When I work , I work hard , even when I’m on vacation I’d like to climb mountains, to do bungee jumping, rafting and all sorts of such adrenaline pumping activities, Byung-Chul Han interpretation of inactivity in not my kind of thing.
I’m fascinated by Trayee and Niral, both captivating fragrances.
Niral is one of a kind warm , spicy and boozy rose .
Trayee is charismatic fragrance , warm , creamy and even dark . The cardamom, vanilla and jasmine, natural ingredients , Bertrand Duchaufour too are Trayee most appealing features
I thought about it and if I happen to be the winner I’d choose Trayee
Thank you “J” for the review, and of course for the generosity

  • Inactivity is fine only for a certain periods , or ours of the day when I’d like to blow up the steam, otherwise it’s not. I have my own obligatory duties, I actually like to perform because according to my perspective an action is almost all the time better than inaction.
From Ashoka, Niral and Trayee i only know Trayee. Between the luscious, creamy and waxy Ashoka and boozy suede leather with cozy touch Niral is not easy to choose, but Niral i still a favorite.
Trayee in my opinion is multifaceted resinous fragrance, with mostly incense, ginger and unlike J Wearescentient cassis is also available in the composition. Can’t say I’m smelling medicinal and green touches but the oud like J i do.
    My choice is Trayee
    Exciting giveaway, USA

  • Beautiful artistic and soothing fragrances I’m here for you ❤
In terms of the philosophical intro I’d quote a famous JFK words that there are risks and costs to action, but there are far less than the long range risks of comfortable inaction, what I think of Byung-Chul Han concept.
Dedication, working with small, but proven team you can trust , creativity , highest quality fragrances , and no short cuts . All are great moves that lead Neela Vermeire to success!
Ashoka would shine in warmer weather, J Wearescentient described the fragrance really well showing its relaxing properties.
Niral feels voluptuous, half soothing half seductive, the buttery iris and leather, rose and champagne is to die for.
Trayee is a famous in the community fragrance I’ve never smelled, the cardamom, creamy woody facets incense and earthy nuances I find attractive
Mohur Extrait is my favorite Neela Vermeire perfume, and I’ll be happy to win Trayee
    Thank you for the opportunity

My thoughts on Inactivity and Byung-Chul Han matters, nothing more to add. Always been a fan of work smart , play hard way of life, but inactivity….no.
I had the pleasure of not only smelling Neela Vermeire Créations fragrances at Esxence 2018 , but Neela herself. Such a warm and genuine woman.
If I have to rate my favorite Neela Vermeire Créations fragrances:
    1. Mohur Extrait , also Michelyn favorite i believe
    2. Bombay Bling ,
    3. Trayee / Purpureum from the new Fragments by NVC line
If I have to rate J Wearescentient picks:
    1. Trayee
    2. Niral
    3. Ashoka
As usual I’ll share my thoughts on the matter, and compare my experiences with what J Wearescentient is getting.
Ashoka is bitter, something smells like absinthe to me. Easy to wear clean green floral
Niral is a sexy fragrance, not sure I’d call it tranquil. Powedery iris , leather , jammy rose …
Trayee is amber, with lots of spices , ginger and oud , unlike J I don’t get jasmine anything green, or clove at all in Trayee. In my opinion Trayee is more resinous and spicy , than heavy on the incense, on my skin the incense is in the background.
I don’t know if it’s my skin , my the fragrance in the drydown also gets a bit lactonic , something smells milky to me. Beautiful and comforting fragrance.
    Trayee would be nice

  • Respect for the fine relaxing picks and philosophy
Reading J reviews made me want to smell Trayee and Niral as soon as possible.
Both fragrance are somewhat similar, with distant Indian connection between them. Trayee is more spicy , more resinous and there’s incense, one of my favorite notes, Niral on the other hand is more floral , boozy and there’s more suede leather.
I like when incense fragrances are more complex, just like in Trayee, there’s a lot of different spices, a touch of sweetness and even jasmine.
Thanks to J know Neela Vermeire did a splendid work , Trayee please
    Thank you kindly, from EU
