Imaginary Authors O, Unknown (Josh Meyer) 2017~ New Perfume Review +Philip Sava’s Final Journey Draw

For his second release of 2017, and the 3rd and final tome by "Philip Sava" (Memoirs of a Trespassor in 2012  and Cape Heartache in 2013, both reviewed by Tama Blough), Josh Meyer of Imaginary Authors has once again harvested the results of his highly fertile and prolific imagination and given us O, Unknown Eau de Parfum a smart and decidedly different spin on iris.

Wanderer Above The Mist Caspar David Friedrich 1818 digitalized

At age 65, when famed explorer and author Philip Sava was given less than a year to live, he set off from his home in Madagascar for parts unknown. Leaving all his belongings behind, he set off on foot, hopped a freighter across the Indian Ocean, and wandered into the Bangladesh wilderness. His journey, which lasted over a decade, took him through Nepal and Tibet where his exploration turned spiritual and into rural China where months of solitude resulted in some of the most confessional observations ever committed to paper. This is the story of a man grappling with the meaning of life as he grasps to life’s last vestiges."

The brilliant and central conceit of Josh Meyer’s Imaginary Authors perfumes is a threefold process. 1.) Create an author with a fully-realized life. 2.) Create a novel/memoir/treatise written by that author, and 3.) Design a perfume inspired by that author and that particular work.  A complex and complicated process and Josh proves time and time again that he is up to the challenge, having produced a line comprised of unforgettable perfumes, creating each with its own literary personae and world. In O, Unknown, Josh tackles the classic hero’s journey with all its trials and tribulations; a protagonist searching for that which is “unknowable”, be it God, spiritual enlightenment, what is life after death etc… all the questions that remain unknowable to the eternal seeker. Ironically given only one year to live, the author finds his life stretching out for the next ten years as he continues to search for the meaning that eludes him, not realizing that it is the search itself that is keeping him alive.

O, Unknown is at its heart an orris/iris-centric perfume, the iris itself often grown with a three-spathed flower which could be interpreted as a holy trinity not unlike the lily represented by the “fleur des lys”. The trinity being father/son/holy spirit or maiden/matron/crone, again a great Unknown. The Orris Butter is central to this aromatic perfume, at once dry and floral, with that sublime dusty powder sensation.

Black Tea via googlesearch digitalized

The tea facets representing the authors travels through Nepal, Tibet, and China, especially the tincture, provides those singular smoky, nutty, and green pine notes which one associates with a fine aged Lapsang Souchong. Often referred The King Of Teas, Lapsang Souchong is akin to a very fine aged whiskey or bourbon, and can command similar prices. The sandalwood and musk balsam in the base provide a warming woody note, not the unlike aged oak and wood notes found in the process of smoking tea leaves over a wood fire. Seamlessly blended in O, Unknown these notes provide a haunting and mystical scent that is contemplative, enticing, and a wonderful addition to my Imaginary Authors library.

Notes include Black tea, Lapsang Souchong tincture, orris butter, Kyoto moss, musk balsam, sandalwood and "mystery ???"

Disclosure: Thank you SO much to Josh Meyer for supplying my sample. The  opinions are my own.

Appreciate how Robert described the tea story/history on this fragrance. Lapsang Souchong is something I’m excited to try and orris butter. Quite curious what the mystery note this time. My favorite IA remains to be Every Storm A Serenade. San Diego CA

  • Thanks for this giveaway and nice review about O tea based fragrance.
I would like to be able to try this out. So far people have been liking this
Only smelled Gucci Pour Homme ll and like how that smells
    Thanks again from California

I adore iris scents in all their variations. This scent sounds wonderful. Tea is such an interesting note to pair with iris.

I am just diving into tea not fragrances buy have always been a fan of iris! Roberts review and in-depth and description of the tea was amazing. His telling of the tea known as The The Kind was so informative. His final saying describing the notes blend in a “haunting and mystical” was the final straw on for me to know that I have to get my nose on this. I’ve had allot of designer iris like Dior Homme Intense and Valentino Uomo but I’m excited to smell this as I am also a fan of Cape Heartache! O, Unknown sounds like an INCREDIBLE end to this trilogy and I can only hope to win this scent.

  • I’m an enthusiastic tea fan, and I love iris notes in fragrance, and this interesting combination in the hands of Josh Meyer has truly gotten my attention! The image on the flacon is lovely as well.

My current favorite iris is Iris Silver Mist, my current favorite tea fragrance is Masque Milano Russian Tea, and my favorite Imaginary Authors fragrance is Saint Julep.

I’m in the US — in the great city of Chicago!

  • I’m a big fan of tea fragrances so I cannot wait to try this one. Most tea fragrances are very light and floral so I’m excited for this one. Hopefully the tea notes are strong and carry through the journey

  • I am curious as to how this perfume portrays seeking answers to unanswerable questions. I am also interested in how the iris is done in O, Unknown. I am still looking for an iris love. I don’t think I have tried a fragrance from Imaginary Authors yet. USA.

  • I love the O Unknown idea of leaving out one of the notes. I saw Sebastian’s review on Youtube.com and am intrigued. A haunting and mystical scent is just perfect for this time of year. What a create mind Josh has. I would love to give this a try. My favorite from this line was the last one, Saint Julep. Thanks Robert! Michelyn, I have no clue how you pull together such fabulous artwork for the articles. Genius! Thanks for the draw.

  • I found this quote to be intriguing – “O, Unknown is at its heart an orris/iris-centric perfume, the iris itself often grown with a three-spathed flower which could be interpreted as a holy trinity not unlike the lily represented by the “fleur des lys”.

The notes sound intriguing, as well. I do like tea notes. I also like that there is a “mystery’ note.

I love the history involved in these scents, they feel like they take you on a journey and Robert’s review expands on that. I also love tea scents so I can’t wait to try this one. I haven’t tried many imaginary authors yet, of the 2 I’ve tried I love Cape Heartache!

  • I enjoy how Robert described Lapsang Souchong to be like fine aged whiskey. I personally love tea frags, not so much iris. I own Philtre Ceylan by Atelier Cologne and SMW. My favourite from IA is Saint Julep, just wish it lasted longerr!

    I live in the US.

  • I just wanted to write to Robert Herrmann that this is a beautifully, beautifully written review. I love it very much. Best wishes to the sweet soul who wins this beautiful perfume. (mine is not an entry, just a note of love)

  • I really liked Robert’s Holy Trinity interpretation of this perfume and the background of how Josh creates. I love The Soft Lawn but O, Unknown sounds like it is gorgeous perfume as well. I love both iris and tea as notes in my perfumes and am currently enjoying Assam of India from the house of Berdoues.

  • BostonScentGuy says:

Haunting, mystical, and contemplative are words that pique my interest for sure! Loved reading how the iris and tea work together. Both lapsong and iris are favorite notes. I’d love to try this! I haven’t yet been able to try imaginary authors scents, but love the concept! I’m in the US. Thanks for the draw.

  • Richard Potter says:

I love Robert’s description of Lapsang Souchong. It is indeed “The King of Teas.” Last year I made a liqueur using Lapsang, Osmanthus, and Cardamom. Maybe next time I’ll use Orris. USA

  • The tea notes are appealing to me. Imaginary I am indeed a fan of tea scents and also iris. Memoirs of a Trespasser is still my favorite IA. US

  • I just got a sample set from IA yesterday. I was showing my husband because it’s just so lovely and creative how Josh uses SO much creativity in his work!! I like the review’s laying out what goes into the process. It’s fantastic to see so much FUN creativity, too. And Josh is such a sweet man, so that makes it even nicer. I haven’t tried the whole line YET, am catching up. A City On Fire and Bull’s Blood were tied for favorites until last night when I tried Slow Explosions. But I have a feeling this latest will be my favorite as I love tea notes to the point I made my own lapsang souchong tincture a few years ago! I’m a BIG fan of IA! And orris, too.

  • Beautyful review!! Thanks
What a nice description of perfume, especially of Lapsang Souchong-“very fine aged whiskey or bourbon, and can command similar prices”.
I like tee in perfumery- Green Tea Arden, Imperial Tea by Kilian.
    USA, DE

  • Oh my! Robert, I’m very fond of you, but I don’t know if we’re close enough for you to be throwing “Orris Butter” around so casually. Sigh…must give this a try!G5M7

  • I always like Robert’s reviews and this is no exception. I am a tea lover, so this got on my radar very very quickly. I’ve only tried Memoirs of a Trespasser and thought it was gorgeous. Thanks so much for the draw. I really want to try this. I’m in the USA

  • Love tea fragrances and have a number of favorite perfumes with iris featured. I am curious if the cardamom note is evident.

Josh Myer’s creative process and imagination just floors me. I love the story of Philip Sava. How inspiring! I love tea fragrances. Thé Vert by Bvlgari is one of the first fragrances I ever bought when I became interested in perfume. I look forward to trying O, Unknown.

I’m always interested in new releases, but this one really excites me! Orris/iris happens to be my favorite perfume note and I’m an avid drinker of Lapsang Souchong (my husband calls it ‘fish tea’ because he thinks it smells like smoked salmon – and maybe it does, but that doesn’t make it any less delicious!).

I also love the backstory for this fragrance. I spent some time in Nepal myself and have always dreamed of a fragrance that might capture some of those experiences. It sounds like O, Unknown might be a good candidate and could possibly unseat Yesterday Haze as my favorite IA scent. I’m in the US. Thanks for this exciting review and draw!
