Late Autumn is upon us and the holiday season has already begun. During this time of year, warm and resinous fragrances are especially welcome.  I have known Gerald Ghislain, the founder and Creative Director of Histoires de Parfums, since he launched his collection in the USA at the sadly closed emporium of niche and indie perfumery, Takashimiya in New York City in 2008. Creating an amber fragrance that’s genderless can be a challenge. Histoires de Parfums Ambre 114, from  the brand’s “Cult Book” collection was launched in 2001 and for me, is a reference amber perfume. I consider it one of the best amber perfumes of the past 25 years. Histoires de Parfums Ambre 114 is complex; sweet, spicy, aromatic, earthy, woody, and balsamic. With exceptional longevity, it’s lasts from first application well into the long chilly nights. Can one amber perfume be all things to everyone? Ambre 114 just might be it. Don’t turn the page on it.–Michelyn Camen, Editor-in-Chief

Steven received a bottle; Michelyn owns hers from 2010 ; opinions are their own.

  • I am a big fan of this brand! I appreciated how Michelyn highlighted Ambre 114’s complexity while keeping it approachable for anyone interested in amber scents. It’s so interesting that she considers it a classic of the past 25 years! Steven’s video brought even more depth, especially when he talked about the nutmeg and thyme in the opening. I feel like I can almost smell it just from their descriptions.

  • This was the first perfume I bought from Histoires de Parfums and it is lovely! I’m definitely due for a new bottle and 4 oz is incredibly generous! As Steven said it has great longevity and sillage. I do love that touch of Rose and Patch in it but its heart really is a true golden amber and I love it for that!

Redolessence Has been a channel that I’ve enjoyed for a while. I’m new or too fragrances, but he has a way with explaining the scent. I am definitely a fan of resinous Amber. Michelyn Camen Write up did well in explaining a little bit of the history behind the company. She also seemed to like it which is always a good sign!

  • The way Michelyn described Ambre 114 as “all things to everyone” really got me intrigued! Her nostalgic connection to the fragrance adds so much heart to the review. Steven’s video was a great follow-up, I loved his insights on the base notes, especially the benzoin and musk. This seems like a perfect pick for cozy autumn nights.

I do agree with MICHELYN, creating a unisex amber fragrance is difficult indeed as most do tend to lean on a more masculine direction. Amber is a great fragrance to wear in the fall/winter months because of the cozy and warm nature of the note itself. I have read some other reviews on the site about Histoires De Parfums and wasn’t aware of how strong they are. Having the rose present on the fragrance is what gives it that unisex touch. I can see from the notes how it leans dark and more of a classy/dress up fragrance than a casual everyday scent. A great new niche house to me to keep on my radar. I’m located in the USA.

  • Michael Bullock says:

I want to win the giveaway because it sounds real good with some of my favorite notes it’s going to be good for the winter time .GOD BLESS

  • Oh, I had a decant of this years ago had almost forgot about it. I loved how Michelyn said it is difficult to create an amber fragrance that is genderless! So many can be more on the masculine side. I do adore a well crafted amber. I loved how Steven said it opens bold, warm, and sappy. The longevity is an absolute bonus. Who doesn’t want a perfume in the winter that lasts through those long chilly nights. I am in the USA.

  • I thoroughly enjoyed Michelyn’s review of Histoires de Parfums Ambre 114. Her vivid descriptions and insightful analysis truly captured the essence of the fragrance, making me feel as if I could smell the amber and spices through the screen. Steven’s video complemented the review perfectly, offering a visual and auditory experience that brought the fragrance to life. His detailed breakdown of the scent notes and personal anecdotes added a personal touch that made the review even more engaging. Together, they provided a comprehensive and immersive overview of this captivating perfume. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

  • I own 1969 from this brand and its very beautiful and unique. 1899 is great too.
This one sounds just as good from both Steves description and Michelyns review. Will be on my list to try for sure.

  • I own the Casanova and is really good and how Steven describes this fragrance I s as m sure this is great too

  • Daniel Rutan says:

This sounds like a solid hit from both Steven and Michelyn’s reviews. Ambre 114 is intriguing with a sweet, spicy and woody tone to the amber perfume. I would love to try this one out for the winter on a snowy day. I live in Chicago…cheers!!

  • Wow, I had no idea that Ambre 114 was from 2001! Really appreciated Michelyn’s insights into Histoires de Parfums and how they came to NY in 2008. My favorite is Moulin Rouge, a rosy, spiced plum! Steven’s review really put me in the mood for a power amber.

  • Wow this sounds like it’s PERFECT FOR THE WINTER!!!
also Steven, I love your reviews always but today you taught me that amber is an accord (mind blown) I happen to love amber scented perfumes so thank you for that. And wow thank you to Histoires de Parfums for a 4oz giveaway!

  • Amber is a category I have grown to absolutely looove in perfume! At first I found them oppressive and now I can’t get enough especially when I need to feel cozy in the fall and winter. If Michelyn considers this a reference and says it’s genderless I really must try it. Steven did a fantastic job describing how the notes play out and showing the handsome presentation. I’m relieved to hear vetiver is not a major player as well. I own and love 1740 but oddly haven’t tried any other Histoires. This is now top of my list. From Brooklyn, NY.

  • Michelyn’s storytelling about the history of Ambre 114 is so engaging! I love the idea of a genderless amber perfume that still feels warm and inviting. Steven’s video really drove it home with his detailed breakdown of the notes and his passion for the brand. You can tell this fragrance has stood the test of time for a reason.

This sounds like a great amber fragrance for the fall and winter season. I’ve heard of this brand but didn’t know Histoires de Parfums was around that long.

Love that Steven says this fragrance lasts 10+ hours. He also mentioned this fragrance has a creamy dry down, something I would really enjoy.

Michelyn’s description of Ambre 114 as ‘all things to everyone’ truly piqued my interest! The nostalgic connection she shared adds such warmth to her review. Steven’s video complemented it beautifully—I especially enjoyed his take on the base notes, like benzoin and musk. This fragrance seems ideal for cozy autumn evenings.

  • Rich warm and ambery rose and woodsy… sounds like a winner! The weather is perfectly brisk for this type of scent in southeast US!

Ambre 114 has been on my list for a little while now. I’ve yet to get my nose on it, if I do, I’m sure it’ll come home with me. Ambers can be a bit tricky for me, sometimes it’s just too much. I don’t think that’s the case here, the rose, patchouli and thyme balancing it out. Thank you Steven and Michelyn, for another fantastic review! I live in Oregon.

  • Michelin considers this offering one of the best amber perfumes in 25 years, so that’s good. The video spoke of the rich dry down. US

  • I love Histoires de Parfums and love how Stephen introduces this perfume. He is so enthusiastic that I cannot wait to try this. I have never tried Ambre 114, but would love to try it based on this review. It would also be a perfect match for the holiday season!

  • Love the way Steven describes fragrances. I’ve always collected them, but his reviews definitely teach alot about scent layers and just new fragrances that aren’t the “current” scent of the month. This parfum sounds lovely

  • I love resinous amber scents, and Ambre 114 sounds very interesting. Histoires de Parfums is always so timeless. Thanks to Cafleurebon and Redolessence for the great reviews.

  • Michelyn’s review truly painted a vivid picture of Ambre 114, especially highlighting its layered complexity. The mention of sweet, spicy, and balsamic notes stirred a strong desire in me to experience this fragrance firsthand. It’s fascinating how a scent can embody such richness yet remain approachable to all fragrance lovers. Thanks for the chance to participate in this giveaway—I’m eager to delve into this olfactory masterpiece. I live in Romania, Europe.

  • Ambre 114 is a timeless masterpiece, perfectly balancing sweet, spicy, and woody notes. Michelyn captures it well—this amber feels like a warm embrace on chilly nights. Gerald Ghislain’s vision truly shines!

Love redolessence videos. They are entertaining, informative, and very helpful in migrating the wonderful world of fragrance.

  • Thank you Michelyn for sharing some history on this brand. I’m a big fan of Amber and agree it’s definitely great for Autumn weather. Stevens break down of the notes had me interested. USA

  • I really enjoyed both Michelyn’s review and Steven’s video on Ambre 114! Michelyn’s take on the fragrance as a complex yet wearable amber, blending sweet, spicy, and woody notes, really stood out to me. I also loved how she emphasized its genderless appeal and amazing longevity. Steven’s video was a great complement, especially his detailed breakdown of the fragrance’s balance. I live in Austin,Texas and would love to experience this stunning amber scent for myself. Thanks to both of you and Histoires de Parfums for the chance!

  • I greatly enjoyed Michelyn’s evocative review of Histoires de Parfums Ambre 114. Her vivid descriptions and deep insights beautifully conveyed the fragrance’s character, making the amber and spices almost tangible. Steven’s accompanying video was the perfect complement, offering a dynamic perspective that brought the scent to life. His detailed breakdown of the notes and personal anecdotes added a warm and relatable touch, enhancing the overall experience. Together, their work provided a wonderfully immersive and comprehensive portrayal of this enchanting perfume. Regards from NY.

  • Amber 114 sounds like a complex amber perfect for chilly fall weather. I appreciate the addition of the herbs, spices and floral notes which are not typically found in traditional amber forward fragrances. Michelyn considers it one of the best amber perfumes of the past 25 years. Steven is impressed with the silage and longevity. MD, USA.

  • I’ve heard so many great things about this fragrance since I got into the hobby several years ago, but I’ve never had the chance to try it. Last I ordered samples from this house, this particular scent was out of stock and I have since forgotten about it. As a fan of ambers, I’m interested by default, but reading Michelyn’s comments where she calls it a “reference amber”, and even declares it as “one of the best amber perfumes of the past 25 years”, makes me think I really am missing out on something special. Steven spoke highly of its bold character and personality, while also saying it’s a bit dark. I’ve seen some compare it to Ambre Precioux, which I absolutely adore, so it certainly sounds like it may be a winning pick for me. Regardless of the draw, this one is moving back to the top of my sample/decant buy list. Best of luck to all. I live in NC, USA.

  • I think the best recommendation is from Michelyn because she considers it to be one of the best amber perfumes of the past 25 years.
Additionally, Steven thinks it is rich, warm resinous, sticky, creamy and long lasting, everything I like!
    Hugs from EU ❤️

  • Michelyn, I caught that “don’t turn the page on it.” From the Cult Book collection! I would love to try something from Histoire de Parfums, and I’m not very familiar with amber, so a reference amber and one of the best sounds like a good place to start. Thanks to Steven for more on the notes, and that it is heftier and better for cooler weather. I am always looking for scents that keep up my spirits in the gray and gloomy Seattle winters.
I’m in the US, thank you for the draw and the lovely reviews.

  • I love dry ambers and this seems to be right up my alley according to the alluring notes and great longevity mentioned by Michelyn and Steven! Plus I always find Histoire de Parfums a very interesting house, so I would love to get a chance to try this…
    Greetings from Germany!

  • I appreciated Micheyln’s thoughts about amber perfumes. I also enjoy complexity, strong longevity, and resinous warmth in these fragrances, and agree they often read as gendered. I’d love to try this “reference amber” to see how it compares to favorites like Christophe Laudamiel’s Amber Classico Modern. Steven’s review of Ambre 114 showed off the thoughtful Histoires de Parfums presentation, the base-heavy balance, and the “warm, sticky, sappy, viscous quality” of a dense, rich amber perfume. He noted the vetiver isn’t bringing much green earthiness to this wear; Ambre 114 seems to be all about the resins and woods, though he mentioned smelling more creamy sandalwood than peppery cedar. The additions of rose, geranium, and thyme add some distinction in the genre.

    I’m in the USA.

  • While I’ve never owned anything from this brand, I’ve had them on my radar forever! I really enjoy Amber scents. They seem to have the best longevity. Amber really seems to amp any formulation and makes it just last and last on the skin. This one sounds so beautiful with nutmeg, vanilla and tonka. I almost think it might even share a similarity to Shalimar based on the combination of notes. I can’t believe this scent has been around for over 23 years and I’ve yet to ever smell it!

    Wishing you a lovely Thanksgiving!
    I live in the US.

This beauty has a distinct syntax that makes for a winner.every time. Spicy, woody naturals, and finally it retreats to the sweet side of things. Nothing out of place and I believe this is a great autumn and winter addition to any connoisseurs collection. I’ve never owned nor smelled this house’s many offerings but I hope to. Especially with Christmas coming up I want to also try the one that allegedly is similar to the original spice bomb EDT. I’m sure they all have great staying power and work well in most weathers. From Jacksonville, NC.

  • That Michelyn thinks this is the best amber in 25 years is for sure saying something about this. I was interested at the nutmeg note. I love a bold opening. I was at my local shop today and they carry this line. I wish I had tried this on skin. I love sandalwood that is creamy and like that it is more prominent than the cedar. I love that it is long lasting. Just returned a fragrance (only the second ever I have returned) and it was due to lack of longevity. I don’t have much amber fragrances in my collection. Thanks for the chance. USA.

    Greetings everyone
I liked how Ms Camen and Mr Gavrielatos were able to unfold all the posh layers of Ambre 114 , fragrance I’ve smelled at Histoires de Parfums Parisian boutique at 11 rue du Roi Dora in the Marais district. The fragrance is no doubt a reference amber , completely agree with Ms Camen , very spicy , moderately sweet and woody creation every fragrance fan should try.
1876 and 1899 Hemingway are my two favorite Histoires de Parfums fragrances.
Thank you , American living in EU

  • Ambre 114 is a legend, there’s a good reason Michelyn’s caled it “cult amber” and one of the best ever made.
Amber dominating from the first spray, so smooth, spicy well done amber fragrance. I’m a bit surprised by the fact both Michelyn and Steven didn’t mention how spicy and powdery Ambre 114 is , the nutmeg is so strong adding to the amber in a beautiful way.
Edition Rare Fidelis is without a doubt my favorite Histoires de Parfums , oud, coffee and raspberry, and it’s made by Julien Rasquinet an awesome perfumer. As far as I know Edition Rare is Histories de Parfums upscale line , maybe the reason unlike the other fragrances from the brand it’s only available in 15 and 60ml bottles, there’s no 120ml.
    Thank you for the opportunity

  • I have no experience with Histories de Parfums except for This is not a Blue Bottle 1.6 , super fresh, almost tart summer fragrance that was comforting me during hot weather C lockdowns .
Ambre 114 sounds great doesn’t it , sensual and classy amber with aromatic, balsamic, warm spicy and woody nuances . I’ll be happy to win a bottle
    Thanks to all involved

Thanks for the nice review Steven! Michelyns writeup on amber fragrances and a brief introduction to this brand was good to read about

Huge fan of labdanum and benzoins. I really liked this fragrance because of the use of thyme in an amber fragrance. Considering that this fragrance has been around for so long, that in itself is a testament to it’s beauty,

I would love to sample this at some point.

    Cheers from WI, USA
