Unforgettable
In every way
And forever more
That’s how you’ll stay
That’s why, darling, it’s incredible
That someone so unforgettable
Thinks that I am unforgettable too. ~ Gordon Irving, lyrics to Unforgettable

Hiram Green won an Art and Olfaction Award for Hyde

Hiram Green with his Art and Olfaction award

Unforgettable: in such a manner award-winning natural artisan perfumer Hiram Green (2019 Art and Olfaction Award winner for Hyde) depicts his vision of Hollywood’s Golden Age in his latest composition Vetiver. To quote Hiram: “This spicy and woody fragrance is what we imagine heartthrobs of Hollywood’s  Golden Age smelled like: elegant, charming, yet vigorous and adventuresome.” As an avowed vetiver lover I couldn’t agree more; currently it’s on my list for Best of 2021.

Best Vetiver perfumes

Vetiver via wiki

Vetiver was among the first natural materials which I encountered along my own fragrant path, beginning in my teens – and it was love at first sniff. I dreamed about wedding it to cyclamen, violet leaf, cucumber aldehydes, roses, violets, broom, rosewood, wild mushrooms or myrrh. I love it when combined with sparkling citrus notes, in chypre bases and in ruh khus attars, when it is distilled with sandalwood. Over the years I’ve made it my goal to experience as many variants as possible, and as many fragrances as I could in which it was a dominant component. When Hiram Green’s Vetiver became available, I was thrilled to receive a sample.

Hiram Green Vetiver review

Top: Cary Grant in I am no Angel, Greta Garbo by Edward Steichen, Paul Newman/Sidney Poitiers in Paris Blues, Middle: Hiram Green Vetiver via Hiram Green, Bottom: Marlene Dietrich via Time Magazine, Gregory Peck in Valley of Decision and Louise Brooks in Pandora’s Box collage by Michelyn©

When I reflect upon old-school, golden age Hollywood ‘leading man’ elegance and charm, I most identify with Cary Grant, Frank Sinatra and Rock Hudson among the images shared by the perfumer on Instagram. To that I would unhesitatingly add Gregory Peck, Sidney Poitier, Paul Newman and several others. As regards the women, our perceptions differ: it is challenging for me to envision either Rita Hayworth or Marilyn Monroe sporting Hiram Green Vetiver – but I can easily imagine the likes of Marlene Dietrich, Garbo or Louise Brooks smoldering in such a spicy, smoky perfume. It takes a person with a very strong sense of identity to do justice to a bold, suave fragrance like Vetiver – and merely being well-dressed or handsome (applies to all genders!) is not sufficient. Some actors smell floral to me, animalic or resinous/ambery; others clearly feel like classic eaux de colognes or fougères. Anyone wearing Hiram Green’s latest perfume appears simmeringly sophisticated, intelligent. In my view there is a distinctly well-bred sultriness born of smoke, innuendo and even sexual ambiguity which surrounds it – as well as a hefty dose of mystery.

Fred Astaire in Top Hat 1945

Fred Astaire in Top Hat 1945

Hiram’s employment of two different vetivers showcases their varying facets: Javan vetiver possesses a soft smokiness, a subtly animalic and sweetly boozy quality adorned with menthol/chocolate tones. Haitian vetiver tends to be deep, rich and grassily verdant with citrus notes. This complex balsamic heart is framed by an aromatic tonic citrus and fresh ginger introduction, sly and lively. Vetiver’s self-possession is ensconced in the woody warmth of cedar and musky/woody/ floral arms of vegetal ambrette.  Vetiver, cedar and ambrette in concert evoke a leathery sensibility which is as polished and soigné as Fred Astaire’s kid gloves, and just as gracious. Whether one wishes to swashbuckle, tap or high-step their way into your heart, Hiram Green Vetiver is a fine way to inaugurate the adventure, an unforgettable green.

Notes: citrus, ginger, Haitian and Javan vetiver, cedarwood, ambrette seed

Hiram Green Vetiver sample kindly provided by the perfumer – it’s marvelous, thank you!  My nose is my own…

I enjoyed reading about the classic movie stars that might wear this vetiver fragrance. I also liked how it was mentioned that it used 2 different types of vetiver. Also, I like how it utilizes citrus and ginger, which is one of my favorite fragrance notes. I can see Gregory Peck wearing Hiram Green Vetiver. I live in Maryland USA.

  • Ida says Hiram Green Vetiver employs two varieties to vetiver to show smoky and boozy sides of the note. Ida mentions Cary Grant and that was also the first name that came to my mind. My fav. from Hiram Green is Voyage and I have the first version. I am in US

  • Mary jean says:

Love the idea it was a big in Hollywood. Classic movie stars. I’m sure it smells good. Vetiver is such a nice green note. I would like to smell this. Thank you for the chance.

I love that the author envisioned Marlene Dietrich, Garbo or Louise Brooks wearing this. I get the “type” of scent that this is. In that vein, I think Katherine Hepburn could be added to this list. I don’t have a favorite of this fragrance house. In Louisiana, USA.

  • Ida! Thank you! This is my favorite kind of perfume review: one that focuses quite a bit on the matière première! Thank you so much for this opportunity! I am especially delighted because I am currently looking for a bottle that highlights vetiver right now! I can easily see Katherine Hepburn, wearing her famous gender-defying pants – independent, elegant, intelligent – snagging some of Cary Grant’s barbershop or vetiver scent, such as Hiram Green Vetiver. While not familiar with Hiram Green scents, I am most interested in natural perfumery. I just received my Prosody London discovery sample set (after reading about the house on CaFleureBon) and look forward to sampling Hiram Green as well!

  • I’m definitely like Ida in that I love when vetiver is combined with sparkling citrus notes. Still have my sample of Hiram Green’s Vetiver and adore the smoky facets of the javanese variety in the base. In fact, the combination of the two vetivers is reminiscent of a more potent version of the drydown of Enzo Galardi’s Terrarossa, a masterful blend in and of itself. However, the distinguishing factor in this one is without a doubt the musky cedar that melds with the earthy green tones from the mid. Currently my second favourite from Hiram behind Shangri La and could easily see Clark Gable rocking it. MI, USA

  • joshuabrian says:

Great review! Old Hollywood is a lovely and fascinating thing. Could definitely see Clark Gable spraying this on. From USA.

  • Gabriel Garcia says:

    Great review spotlight.
Ida’s puts me in the mood for vetiver, and when it’s done right it’s difficult to say no,
Specially when you add a movie star into the mix, my favorite dashing star is Gary cooper. I’ve never tried Hiram Green’s creations, located in the USA.

  • I love classic movies, reminds me of watching with my grandma. Smoky and boozy vetiver I absolutely love along with the chocolate notes, sounds amazing. I could see Sidney Poitiers wearing this. I live in Indiana USA

  • Virginia Riley says:

I love Ida’s description “ there is a distinctly well-bred sultriness born of smoke, innuendo and even sexual ambiguity which surrounds it – as well as a hefty dose of mystery” because I think Vetiver does add this to many scents. But then, as a Vetiver lover, I may be biased. Based on this review, I’m thinking Mae West would have happily sported this scent and got away with it! I would be ecstatic to win this draw as I haven’t been able to sample Hiram’s creations yet. I live in California.

  • Both vetiver and old Hollywood appeal to me. From Ida’s description of the fragrance, it sounds to me as if it would also suit Lauren Bacall. The only Hiram Green I’ve sniffed is Arbolé Arbolé. I’m in Oklahoma, USA. Thanks, as always, for the draw!

  • As it’s sweltering hot here in the Pacific Nortwest, the idea of wearing Hiram Green Vetiver in an air conditioned movie theater sound so perfect. I like how Ida explained the two different vetivers and the citrus ginger.
My favorite Hiram Green is Moon Bloom and I think Omar sharif would wear this.

  • wilsonwc76 says:

This sound wonderful! I don’t know this house, but I love a vetiver scent, and I love that this one evokes old Hollywood glamour and sophistication. These notes sound so lovely together, and I would love to smell it! I love Fred Astaire, and this sounds like something he would wear. I’m in NYC.

  • lemoncake says:

I have a few Hiram Green scents….moonbloom, vivacious, voyage. I’d love to have a bottle of Vetiver…I’ve never thought of vetiver as smoky or sweetly boozy. It sounds intriguing. Thank you for the draw. I live in MO, USA.

  • As someone who is in love with old Hollywood, that was my favorite part of Ida’s review. From her description of intelligence and mystery, I would have to say that I could see Katherine Hepburn wearing this. USA resident. 🙂

  • Hiram fragrances are always top notch. Green Vetiver sounds like another winner. I enjoyed how Ida explained the vetiver. I almost got a sniff just reading the description. USA

  • IvanVelikov says:

Hiram Green is a house I have no experience with. Vetiver I think is woody and earthy fragrance for people with high self esteem.
Kirk Douglas i envisioned wearing Hiram Green Vetiver
Thanks to Ida Meister , Hiram Green
    USA

  • Ida and I share this love of vetiver. Vetiver grabbed my heart years ago, and I haven’t looked back. I like to think of myself as suave, intelligent and gender-fluid so this is right up my alley. (I’m really none of those things, so the perfume could help me create the illusion.) Actors I can imagine wearing this, from the description, Bette Davis, Katherine Hepburn and Lauren Bacall.

  • patrick_348 says:

Ida’s essay made me imagine a whole system of classifying movie stars according to their dominant notes. I find myself imagining someone like Glenn Ford as a vetiver star. I enjoyed Ida’s description of the two kinds of vetiver. I’ve not tried any Hiram Green fragrances, but am eager to. In the US, in NC.

  • I loved the idea of a dapper, dangerous, intrepid sensibility…the idea of something smoky, sultry and daring lurking behind a plush facade. It puts me in mind of both Ava Gardner and James Mason in Pandora and the Flying Dutchmen, with its mystical undercurrent, and the suggestion of love and lust dashed on the rocks; rival but complimentary forces that create an unforgettable frisson, like the interplay of the two vetivers.

My favorite Hiram Green is Slowdive… up until that point I found honey fragrances very safe, pretty, but Slowdive adds a touch of the feral and forbidden (I get the impression HR likes to play with expectations that way!)

    I’m in the USA.

  • I love Vivacious by Hiram Green so much. I imagine someone like Jean Seberg wearing this in playful, vacation style. Ginger and vetiver together sounds beautiful. I live in NY, USA.

  • DulciusExAsperis says:

Well! This description is exciting, I love a sophisticated vetiver and the idea that it could be worn by anyone of any gender is appealing to me as well. I own and love Slowdive by Hiram Green, I think it’s a masterpiece and so I would love the opportunity to sniff this one. If Marlene Dietrich could pull it off, maybe I could too? What about Carole Lombard? I am in the USA.

  • This review was a joy to read. Old Hollywood and fragrances are some of my favorite topics! Ida indicated the person who would wear Hiram Green Vetiver should be “simmeringly sophisticated, intelligent” and a person who has a strong sense of identity. Katharine Hepburn immediately popped into my mind. She was a self-possessed and intelligent woman who, I believe, could pull off a spicy, woody fragrance.

  • I love that she loves vetiver as I do! How about Katherine Hepburn? I have not tried any Hiram scents, but hope to! In NC, USA.

  • Enjoyed Ida’s review as always. Not familiar with Hiram Green perfumes, so no favorites, yet. Am not familiar with the two vetivers mentioned, Javan and Haitian, so curious about this Vetiver perfume. Not too many notes, so it probably has a strong Vetiver component, which I like a lot. Being a sophisticated scent, as Ida describes it, I’d assume someone like Frank Sinatra would wear it, and the ones Ida notes in her review. Thanks for the draw and review. Writing from the USA.

  • Dubaiscents says:

I cannot wait to smell this one! Anything from the amazing Mr Green is bound to be wonderful! I’m not a huge fan of vetiver when it is harsh and medicinal green but, this sounds much more up my alley with the smokiness and chocolate aspects highlighted. It is difficult to pick my favorite from the line but, I adore Dilettante for its brightness mixed with indolic floral. As for which Hollywood star would wear this, I’ll have to go with Clark Gable. Thank you, Indigo and Cafleurebon for the draw! US

  • I happen to be a huge fan of smokey vetiver. I tried it as an essential oil. It is very good at helping one sleep but can produce vivid dreams. I loved to wear it by itself as I drifted off to sleep. The Smokey scent here is very appealing to me. In maryland.

  • GennyLeigh says:

I’ve sampled several Hiram Green fragrances and the quality and craftsmanship is outstanding. The relationship between old Hollywood glamor and the smokey, boozy notes of vetiver are spot on. Would love to own a bottle of this! I could see Marlene Dietrich wearing this scent. Favorite Hiram Green is Shangra La. Commenting from MD, USA.

  • Gurunath halyal says:

Great writing as always. I had Shangri la and it was a complex soapy chypre. Artistic and lovely. I am in Charlotte usa.

  • Hiram Green fragrances i have not smelled yet.
Vetiver is a note i like a lot. Just like Ida Meister , I prefer if it’s paired with citruses or other fruity notes.
Hiram Green Vetiver would’ve been great for Humphrey Bogart
Thanks to Ida and Ann Bouterse

  • Beautiful review, Ida !!
Perfume that reminds Marlene Dietrich, Garbo or Louise Brooks- sound very intrigued, especially I love vetiver.

  • WaltherP99 says:

I do own and love Slowdive by Hiram (50ml) and i’ve sampled all , but Vetiver.
Throwback alpha male and female fragrance is what I’m expecting from it.
James Dean is an icon for a few different generations, i can see him wearing Vetiver
    Thanks a lot

  • I enjoyed Ida’s article about Hiram Green’s Vetiver. With a strong sense of identity, this fragrance sounds, amazing. Loved the references to the older actors and their idenities. I really enjoy Hiram’s Slowdive. I could see Kirk Douglas wearing this one. California

  • What was appealing from the review was to find out this creation has two kinds of vetiver. First name that came to mind for wearing this from old hollywood was Cary Grant. I have not tried any from this house. US

  • Bubeto_GG says:

Some would say Hiram Green is too mature, not to me. I believe there’s no gender in perfumery , just wear what you like, and I like non linear vetiver fragrances.
Marlene Dietrich could easily wear Vetiver , I can see it 🙂
    Thank you for the opportunity

  • redwheelbarrow says:

This was interesting to read and learn about the different aspects of vetiver. I’m just learning to recognize this note. I haven’t noticed a chocolate note to vetiver so I still have much to learn. This fragrance sounds amazing. Thanks for the draw. I’m from the US.

  • My grandpa was Kirk Douglas fan , and Spartacus was his favorite movie.
Hiram Green fragrances I don’t know , but I can easily envision Kirk Douglas and grandpa wearing Vetiver
    Thanks for the draw
    USA

  • I appreciate how Ida talks about vetiver and her experience with it. I learn from Ida’s understanding of perfumery. I appreciate learning about perfumer, Hiram Green’s career and I already think highly of this fragrance because Ida said that this fragrance is currently on her list of Best of 2021. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • Michael Prince says:

What appeals to me about Ida’s review of Hiram Green Vetiver is how she describes in detail the inner workings of this smoky, spicy, and woody fragrance. I love the note of Vetiver in fragrances so I am very drawn to this one. I loved learning about Classic Hollywood stars Ida envisioned wearing this fragrance. If I was to envision an old Hollywood movie star wearing this it would be Cary Grant. My favorite Hiram Green fragrance is Slowdive. I am from the USA.

  • Very interesting review!!! Thanks.
I love Vetiver, and this one sounds very beautiful – smoky, dark Vetiver – WOW!!!
I am not familiar with Hiram Green perfumes.

  • Bryant Worley says:

I have to say that Ida did a very good job of making you envision the scent by, first, stating what actor/actress would wear it, and then breaking it down: “Hiram’s employment of two different vetivers showcases their varying facets: Javan vetiver possesses a soft smokiness, a subtly animalic and sweetly boozy quality adorned with menthol/chocolate tones.”

The actor/people (not necessarily Old Hollywood) I could see wearing this are Sean Connery, Sylvester Stallone, and Paula Poundstone.

I’ve never worn a Hiram Green, but from the notes, the ones I would to get big samples of are: Vetiver, Slow Dive, Hyde, and Lustre`, in that order.

I live in Waldorf, MD, USA.

  • doveskylark says:

I enjoyed reading about Ida’s encounters with vetiver. I love vetiver fragrances, old Hollywood glamour, Hyde from Hiram Green, and Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich. I could see Clark Gable’s character in “Red Dust” wearing Hiram Green Vetiver.
    I live in the USA.

  • wallygator88 says:

Thank you for the beautiful review Ida.

Vetiver is one of my favourite notes in perfumery and I find it to be intensely calming and meditative. I love that your review talks about the different facets of the vetiver used to bring out different effects.

I would imagine Jeffert Goldblum, Patrck Stewart or Ian McKellen wearing this fragrance.

I have not smelt anything from this house before.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • petergigov says:

The person who can easily wear Hiram Green Vetiver is Omar Sharif , in his role in
Lawrence of Arabia. Vetiver and ginger i would wear in the Fall.
    Nice giveaway, USA
