Scent brings me joy. Our sense of smell is likely the most overlooked of our senses … yet it probably brings me the most frequent joy.

The healing power of incense

Ko-Imari (pre-1800) incense cup

We are always about 30 seconds away from death. Don’t believe me?  Go sit on a bottom of a pool holding a few bricks. Let’s see how long ya last. Thanks lungs and air for the save!

I might hit the restroom 3-5 times in a day.

I’ll eat 3 times a day. Maybe 4 or 5 if I’m lucky.

I might scratch my back on the corner of a door every so often.

Sex? Maybe. Sometimes. Maybe not so much.

Music? Traffic? Silence.

Do these bring me joy every time?

Why do I bring up it up this way?

With Tanaka San, my “Japanese Second Father”. We’ve been friends since I was a kid.

There are many things we experience every day, and we aren’t fortunate for every encounter to bring real pleasure. However, we each have an opportunity to let the very thing we do without even thinking 20,000 times a day – bring us joy every at one of those 20,000 opportunities with a little bit of intention. What am I talking about? I’m talking about the simple, yet profound act of breathing, something that keeps us no more than 30 seconds or so from death’s door 20,000 times a day. Breath work, interestingly, is at the center of meditation practices around the world. It’s amazing to me that the cornerstone of health, wellness, mindfulness and clarity – is found in the simple act of breathing. Be it TaiChi or QiGong, Sweat Lodges or Shamanism, Yoga or Rentoutuminen – breath work is at the center of a healthy and peaceful Mind, Body, and Spirit.

ÇaFleureBon and I wanted to bring a little joy into each of your lives at a time of political bickering, social upheaval, pandemics and protests… by reminding everyone of the simple, yet profound joy that brings us all together here . Even on days when there isn’t turmoil, we all find ourselves losing our daily center.

We hope to lead folks back to finding their centers by leading them nose first with smelly things and the scent of healing. This is the first of what we hope will be many short pieces about the simple, yet profound healing power of scent.

Editor’s Note: JK was featured in two CaFleureBon Perfumers Workshops including the Art of Incense Making. Sr Editor Ida Meister was the recipient of a Perfumed Plume award for her article “Scent and healing: The Transformative Power of Perfume”, which inspired me to approach JK for this series.

  • I find LADDM to be a very healing scent. I find it very grounding and peaceful. I takes me to a calm place. I am a fan of DeLapp’s work and would love the chance to win these! I would select Tuberose, Orange, and Blossom. Thank you again for this chance. From Canada.

  • duckliverpaste says:

    yes, scent is healing.
    rose
    orange blossom
jasmine (i don’t know the difference between the 2)

  • When I was young and got sick, my mom would make me a tea. But the tea wasn’t to be drunk. Instead, I was to smell the vapors rising from the hot liquid. Nowadays, I have an aroma diffuser in my room, which gives off different scents depending on my mood and health level (particularly relevant during this pandemic). So yes, I believe in the healing ability of scents, because they work! I’m based in the US and my choices are Rose, Osmanthus and Orange Blossom. From a fan of Rising Phoenix Perfume.

I find scent to be very healing. I use incense and perfume to uplift, clear negativity and to ground. From the Shibui series I think I would like Orange Blossom attar the best, but they all seem lovely.

  • Yes, I find that scent is healing. All of these attars sound lovely, but I’d choose orange blossom, tuberose, and rose. I live in the US. Thanks!

  • Bryant Worley says:

Yes, scent is healing, a mood enhancer. Especially if the scents that are being inhaled bring to mind happifying memories. Also, a medicine that has to be inhaled, has a scent that can be considered healing.

The three Shimbui attars I would like are:

    Rose
    Nosy Be Ylang
    Osmanthus

I live in Waldorf, MD, USA.

Scent is healing and grounding. I can smell a familiar scent and be mentally transported to a happier place. The news has been getting increasingly more depressing and soul draining. I would love to experience JK DeLapp’s work. I would choose Osmanthus, Tuberose and Oranges Blossom Attar. Commenting from MD, USA.

  • Whatever scent J.K. feels is the best. I really cannot enter as I am his cousin and huge fan. thank you for the article. It was very informative.

  • Scent is so healing!!! It can uplift when we’re low or ground us when stress is making it hard to focus, and it definitely brings awareness to the breath.

I love the idea of shibui! Simplicity is healing as well in letting us bring our focus in to a few, perfect things.

The jasmine sambac, orange blossom, and Nosy Be Ylang Attars were the ones that drew my attention.

Thank you so much for this timely reminder that we can do so much to bring stillness and healing into our own paths! I’ve had a stressful week but am going to log off the internets to do a brief meditation now!

    In Canada.

  • Very eye opening post – fragrance in life is so important to life and overall health – I have never used an attar but I regularly use Neroli based fragrance as I find it extremely calming and anti-anxiety especially during these times – I would really like to try the Orange Blossom Attar!

    Thanks from NY, US

  • I find scent healing. I think that is why I spend so much time in the garden. Orange Blossom, Osmanthus, and Tuberose would be wonderful to sample. From New Orleans.

  • Scent is my Joy! Thank you for this opportunity! Peace and much Joy to all. Rose, Tuberose, Osmanthus, please, if lucky. Mich USA

  • Scent is absolutely a powerful healer, and JK is pretty adept at it based on his incense works I have followed! I am so excited to see him writing here! And about breathwork to boot, I have found it very helpful in meditation at sangha.

I would be curious to try the Osmanthus, Tuberose, and Jasmine Sambac attars, I know all three scents to be very soulful and healing, and would love to see what JK has done with them!

    I am in Montana, USA

    Thanks!

  • Yes I find scent can be healing. We use an essential oil diffuser every night and sometimes in the morning or throughout the day with different essential oils sometimes in combination and it seems to help mood and for example lavender at night for sleep, citrus in the morning to energize. The same can be said with certain perfumes helping mood as well. I’m not experienced in other ways scent can heal but it is certainly an interesting topic. I’m in the U.S. and if I was to win I’d like to recieve the Jasmine Sambac, Jasmine Grand., and Nosy Be Ylang attars. I’d like to see the differences between these 2 types of jasmine especially, that is very cool and interesting to me. Thanks for the generous draw.

  • I love that even a memory of a favourite scent can be healing. Orange blossom, osmanthus and tuberose are three I would choose. I’m from Perth in Western Australia.

  • patrick_348 says:

I think scent is healing because it centers me in the moment and calms or excites (but always in a good way). It creates a refuge from stress and worry. I would choose orange blossom, ylang and osmanthus. I live in the US, in NC.

  • Howdy! I’m in Texas, y’all. (I don’t really speak like that). I am interested in #1: Orange Blossom; #2: Tuberose; #3 Jasmine Sambac. Be well and wonderful all! – TJ / The Notetaker

  • aurora_ru says:

The scent has healed me several times, of course, I am talking about natural aromas here: essential oils and scents of real life flowers, trees, earth etc. I checked out The Rising Phoenix ETSY page and I am excited that all these attars are built on base of yuzu and sandalwood. Japanese philosophy of Shibui sounds very appealing to me, too. I need some healing!
I live in the EU and in case of winning I would choose Nosy Be Ylang, Rose and Osmanthus.
In case of not winning I will probably come back to that etsy shop and purchase one or two of those, while I can.
Thanks cafleurebon for introducing and many thanks to JK DeLapp for his generosity and humour!

Scent is most definitely healing. Lavender cures my migraine headaches. A good perfume chases the blues away. I love breathing practice. It centers me and calms me when I am scared.
I would choose orange blossom, Nosy Be Ylang, and Jasmine Sambac.
    I live in the USA.

  • Thanks for your generous draw and writing. Coming to one’s center, finding one’s center, moving from one’s center – these lessons of aikido, the art of peace, came to my mind, on reading this essay, along with Thich Nhat Hanh’s teachings (he is a 93-year young Buddhist Zen master), who asks us to come to our breath, pay attention to it, as it is always with us. But I had not connected the constant breathing with olfaction (elementary, my dear, once you know it). Every time we breathe, we are also smelling something, and these smells too can bring us to the here and now, to our center, which is so needed nowadays in the world of distractions and noise and other pollutants. Thanks for reminding of this great lesson. I’d like to win Jasmine Sambac, Tuberose, and Osmanthus attars, if I’m so lucky as to win this draw. Writing from the USA.

  • I think scent can be healing because it is so closely linked to memory & can trigger emotional responses. I have no experience with attars or this house. I’d choose Jasmine Grand, Orange Blossom, & Nosy Be Ylang if I won. I’m in the US.

  • Scent is definitely healing, no doubt. I would very like to get: Jasmine Sambac, Orange Blossom and Rose. Thank you very much for the draw. I live in Europe.

  • Healing is an important aspect of our lives, especially considering the turmoil the world is going through this year. Wearing one or two fragrances every day has been both comforting and exciting to me, but sharing the experience with my best friend has made it even more special. I’d love the following attars if I win this draw: Orange Blossom, Rose, and Osmanthus. I am in the USA.

  • Shannon Gaines says:

Greetings from Lexington, Kentucky USA. I do find that scent can be healing. It is why there is often scent associated with meditation…incense with meditation, calming scents like lavender during yoga, etc. There is a reason it is called aromatherapy. If I were to win, I would like atars of Tuberose, Rose, and Jasmine Sambac.

I believe scent is at least healing for the soul, if not for the body, for pleasant scents uplift our moods. Would like to win Jasmine Sambac Attar, Jasmine Grand Attar and Rose Attar. VA, USA.

  • I love the idea of your own nose driving you to the healing scent. I would love to learn to recognize jasmine Sambac and Grand and just live orange blossom…

  • I strongly believe in the healing power of scents. They have enormous impact on the functioning of our body. Just like it is with breath, scents have great impact we seem to underestimate. I would love to try rose, Jasmine sambac and tuberose. I live in the EU.

  • Iuno Feronia says:

Thanks for the draw! I believe in the power of scents to change moods and heal, my Choice would be Tuberose, orange blossom and rose.

  • Thank you to Cafleurebon and to JK for this – the timing is certainly on the mark and it is much appreciated.

I do find scent to be healing, and it can also be damaging. I find that my scent choices vary by mood and my moods can change due to my scent choices.

I frequently reach for Heeley Eau Sacrée or CdG Avignon when I need to spiritual healing, the incense notes in those is very comforting to me, most likely rooted in a staunch Roman Catholic upbringing. Oddly enough, I practice both Yoga Nidra and Reiki and when I practice those, I would never reach for either of the aforementioned perfumes. I usually go for something heavy in patchouli or in lavender.

If I should win, I would love Jasmine Grand, Orange Blossom, and Rose.

    I am in the US

  • Of course! Scent is healing. To me, notes that are very close to nature, especially damp forest or chimney smells (such as Bas de Soie, Bois d’Ascèse, Fille en Aiguilles or Arso) reset my mind and my body and make me feel whole again. Gourmand scents can be comforting, and citrus scents can be reinvigorating. So yes! Perfume can be medicine for the body and the soul.
I’d love to win the Jasmine Sambac, Rose and Tuberose attars. I love yuzu!
    I am in France, EU.

  • J.K. and CaFleureBon I look forward to the second article on the healing powers of Scent. Orange Blossom attar for me if I am lucky enough to win, please and thank you.

  • Yes, I definitely do believe that scent is healing. Just like taste, sight, touch and hearing. And I also definitely believe this article itself is healing. Thanks for today’s gratitude pill!

If I won, I would choose the following: Jasmine sambac, Tuberose and Ylang (can you tell I love white flowers?)
Thanks for the beautiful draw. Europe.

  • Thank you for the review and the giveaway. I find scent healing and very calming. I find citruses and rose notes especially adept at this. My choices would be Orange Blossom, Rose and Osmanthus. I am in USA

  • Scent is EXTREMELY healing for me! It has been the one thing that has helped me through this pandemic. Some days I am filled with so much angst and worry, so I find myself spritzing myself with fragrances several times throughout the day to help soothe and lift my mood.
I would choose Jasmine Grand, Orange Blossom and Rose.

    I live in the USA.

  • I have definitely used scent to help lift my spirits on days I know will be challenging. It’s nice to get a sniff of a favorite scent to help me get through a tough day. I’m interested in the two Jasmine and Rose attars. The two flowers I use most to lift my spirits with scent. I live in the USA.

  • Thanks for a wonderful article about appreciating and enjoying every moment of the day. Absolutely, I agree that I find scent healing! I would choose Osmanthus, Nosy Be Ylang, and Rose. I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • Jake Dauod says:

For me, fragrance sis extremely soothing; I always use fragrance to calm down if I am stressed out. The three I would choose are Jasmine Sambac, Orange Blossom, and Rose. Thank you for the amazing draw, kind regards from Illinois, USA.

  • Michael Prince says:

I totally agree that scent is healing and I enjoy smelling fragrances and scented oils in my diffusers. Especially to wind down and relax at the end of the day. If I win I would choose Jasmine Sambac, Orange Blossom, and Osmanthus. I am from the USA.

  • Certain scents (especially those that are from my past) are SO healing and restorative to my mood. I also am intentional about wearing certain perfumes a lot during different phases of life so that when I go back and smell them, it reminds me of different events (my wedding, vacations) and ages. If lucky enough to win, I would like to try Osmanthus, Tuberose and Jasmine Sambac. Thank you!

  • Of course scent heals. I wear roses when I need healing.
I would choose Jasmine Sambac, Tuberose, Rose and Osmanthus, but I have to eliminate one. Ugh. I guess the jasmine goes because I have enough jasmine and love rose more though I love that animalic quality. I don’t have enough osmanthus. These four are fave notes. I’m in USA.
