Scent brings me joy. Our sense of smell is likely the most overlooked of our senses … yet it probably brings me the most frequent joy.

We are always about 30 seconds away from death. Don’t believe me? Go sit on a bottom of a pool holding a few bricks. Let’s see how long ya last. Thanks lungs and air for the save!
I might hit the restroom 3-5 times in a day.
I’ll eat 3 times a day. Maybe 4 or 5 if I’m lucky.
I might scratch my back on the corner of a door every so often.
Sex? Maybe. Sometimes. Maybe not so much.
Music? Traffic? Silence.
Do these bring me joy every time?
Why do I bring up it up this way?
With Tanaka San, my “Japanese Second Father”. We’ve been friends since I was a kid.
There are many things we experience every day, and we aren’t fortunate for every encounter to bring real pleasure. However, we each have an opportunity to let the very thing we do without even thinking 20,000 times a day – bring us joy every at one of those 20,000 opportunities with a little bit of intention. What am I talking about? I’m talking about the simple, yet profound act of breathing, something that keeps us no more than 30 seconds or so from death’s door 20,000 times a day. Breath work, interestingly, is at the center of meditation practices around the world. It’s amazing to me that the cornerstone of health, wellness, mindfulness and clarity – is found in the simple act of breathing. Be it TaiChi or QiGong, Sweat Lodges or Shamanism, Yoga or Rentoutuminen – breath work is at the center of a healthy and peaceful Mind, Body, and Spirit.

ÇaFleureBon and I wanted to bring a little joy into each of your lives at a time of political bickering, social upheaval, pandemics and protests… by reminding everyone of the simple, yet profound joy that brings us all together here . Even on days when there isn’t turmoil, we all find ourselves losing our daily center.
With Contributor Alexandre Helwani, November 2019 (secret and spoiler—there is a scent collaboration in the works)
We hope to lead folks back to finding their centers by leading them nose first with smelly things and the scent of healing. This is the first of what we hope will be many short pieces about the simple, yet profound healing power of scent.
Editor’s Note: JK was featured in two CaFleureBon Perfumers Workshops including the Art of Incense Making. Sr Editor Ida Meister was the recipient of a Perfumed Plume award for her article “Scent and healing: The Transformative Power of Perfume”, which inspired me to approach JK for this series.
