Grandiflora Sakura Bloom Edition x Roku Gin

Grandiflora Sakura Bloom Edition was composed by perfumer Christophe Laudamiel alongside Saskia Havekes, a florist who has transitioned into the world of perfumery in 2013 with her beautiful fragrance brand Grandiflora. This graceful perfume draws inspiration from Roku gin’s Sakura limited edition release. It is exclusively available at select Roku Gin and Grandiflora events taking place this spring in Sydney. I’m already plotting my trip to Sydney to experience one of these stunning sounding events, as the ones I’ve read about so far sound absolutely amazing. Imagine enjoying gourmet meals prepared by top chefs, expertly crafted cocktails by mixologists, all while surrounded by the allure of this stunning perfume. For now, I feel like Gollum, cherishing ‘my precious’ samples of this beautiful perfume that I was fortunate enough to receive.

Christophe Laudamiel stopped me in my tracks with this olfactive piece of magic. But before diving deeper, I must rewind a bit. I’ve loved Roku Gin began the moment it graced my shores. I think the first time I tried it was in Paris, from La Maison du Whisky, the leading European importer of Japanese spirits. However, I need to step back to again to 2003, the year my fascination began with the various spirits of Japan. Sofia Coppola’s film, Lost in Translation has a special place in my heart, not just because of the coming-of-age story but also the coolness and beauty of Japan. Japan became a dream destination for me, I have always been intrigued by its cultures, but the film, along with its behind-the-scenes extras, offered a glimpse into a world that was exciting, especially with its clever commentary on Western perceptions of an Eastern country.

I had also been quietly delving into whiskey, with an ‘e’, and the iconic line delivered by Bill Murray at the bar, “for relaxing times. Make it Suntory time,” stuck with me. Hibiki 17, Suntory’s whisky without an ‘e’ was the one that Bill Murray held, I’ve still yet to experience it but have acquired its Harmony counterpart, which is stunning. As an Irishman, admitting that Japanese whiskey is my favourite (and it truly is) feels like a bold confession. Personally, I enjoy the delicate and subtle flavours present in many of the Japanese whisky’s like Suntory’s Chita, with its fruits and airy soft floral notes.

So, when I discovered that Suntory had ventured into gin, I was eager to try it, and Roku quickly became my go to. I often gift it to friends, not just for its delicious taste but also for its stunning six-sided bottle, Roku translates to ‘six’ in English. Each side represents one of the six Japanese botanicals infused in the gin, with Sakura flowers beautifully etched into the glass. The flavour profile is beautiful, featuring a delicate balance of subtle spiciness and bright sweet floral notes, complemented by the gentle aromas of green tea and the delightful citrus of Yuzu. The finish reveals earthy and green tones, with the Sakura flower offering a light fruity sweetness that lingers as the gin evaporates from the palate, leaving behind a hint of peppery notes.

Grandiflora Sakura Bloom Edition beautifully captures the sensation of sipping Roku gin, allowing you to savour its effervescence and infused essence, capturing the feel of Roku Gin’s flavour profile, whist giving you that fleeting feel of the limited life the Sakura flower exists for. It feels as though Christophe has woven in elements of the Japanese Kõdõ tradition as well, an art form he is also a master of. As my nose delves into Grandiflora Sakura Bloom Edition, I am welcomed by soft whispers of cool green juniper that intertwine with the zesty brightness of yuzu, complemented by a subtle, sour woodiness from Hinoki. The perfume is refreshingly delicate, a term I find myself using frequently describing this, reflecting the gentle nature of the Sakura flower. The green notes of Sakura Bloom Edition provide a lovely earthy balance, gradually unfolding into a sweet, rosy, raspberry, cherry-like floral spirit that mirrors the delicate beauty of cherry blossoms. This airy and elegant perfume captures the ethereal quality of the cherry blossoms, enhanced by a soft, watery waxiness that mimic their fragility as they move in a light breeze.

As you breathe in deeply, the form of the Sakura flower begins to dissolve into a gentle, steam like incense smoke, reminiscent of a serene Japanese temple atmosphere. It’s in this moment the spirit of Kõdõ tradition is felt, inviting us to pause and meditate on the fleeting beauty of this elegant flower, letting us reflect on its delicate charm. The Hinoki wood’s subtle spices offers a hint of peppery incense warmth, allowing its tangy citrus notes to blend seamlessly into the florals and spices letting us be part of the age-old Japanese practice of listening to the incense smoke and crafting poetry inspired by it. I also rather love beautiful effect that this cherry blossom has in a cycle of blooming then slowly effervescing, gradually fading into a light, airy smokiness that invites you back for another sip, much like returning to a refreshing glass of gin. The coolness of the airy steam incense smoke also conjures the sensation of ice in your drink, as you sit in quiet contemplation, enveloped in a soft, mineralic shimmer.

The gentle woody and spicy dry down, combined with the translucent sweetness of cherry blossom florals, beautifully captures the mouth feel and taste of Roku Gin, offering a smooth experience with a hint of leafy earthiness and warming spices that feel both refreshing and introspective whilst also being a perfume. Christophe has composed Grandiflora Sakura Bloom Edition beautifully, like very elegant deft strokes of delicate washes reminding me of Japanese watercolours. Sakura Bloom Edition not only captures the essence of enjoying Roku Gin and the brief yet graceful life of the cherry blossom but also pays tribute to Japanese culture. This light, unobtrusive perfume creates a gentle aura around you, fostering a serene space for contemplation. Its a beautiful and evocative  perfume.

Notes: Juniper, yuzu, Hinoki leaf, crisp bright air accords, sweet velvety cherry blossom, spices.

  • I’ve experienced Japanese spirits and products by Roku (not the gin) while in Toyko and can attest to the quality of the brand. J’s love of Roku Gin and its inspiration on this fragrance combined with the description of a Sakura flower in steam, in a temple, with incense, really evokes for the reader the olfactory experience of Sakura Bloom. I’ve never tried their fragrances, but my favorite gin is Captain Webb Gin and Gray Whale

I absolutely love when a perfumer executes a brief/the inspiration is very clear for a fragrance. Taking the Roku gin, mixed with the cherry blossoms and the addition of yuzu lets you know this fragrance is inspired by Japanese culture. One of my goals in life is truly to experience the cherry blossoms in Japan as it is a sight to behold. What I’m getting from this fragrance is mostly a fresh and airy fragrance mixed with spices. Clean, refreshing and zesty for a cool autumn day or a hot summer evening. The gentle aura that it creates around you like J mentioned paying homage to ancestors in Japanese culture being of the utmost respect. A limited edition fragrance that you must acquire in order to not let this experience pass you by. I’m located in the USA.

  • This Grandiflora Sakura Bloom Edition x Roku Gin review absolutely transported me. I can almost smell the delicate cherry blossoms and taste the crisp yuzu and juniper from here! As someone who’s also obsessed with Japanese gin (Roku being a fave for its balanced botanicals and that beautiful bottle design), this fragrance sounds like a perfect olfactive translation of everything I love about a great gin—fresh, subtle, and so full of life. I haven’t had the pleasure of trying Grandiflora yet, but now it’s top of my list. The way J describes that blend of incense smoke and airy cherry blossom… honestly, I need to get my hands on this! Anyone else totally in love with these kinds of delicate, nature-inspired fragrances? – Me yes!

I’d love to visit Japan, especially during the cherry blossom season, and this fragrance transports me right there. Cherry blossom and juniper is an absolute winner of a combination. I don’t have a favourite gin specifically.. I’ve never tried Roku Gin or Grandiflora fragrances but after this review my interest of both is certainly peaked.

My favourite line of this article:
“I also rather love the beautiful effect that this cherry blossom has in a cycle of blooming then slowly effervescing, gradually fading into a light, airy smokiness that invites you back for another sip, much like returning to a refreshing glass of gin.”

    I’m sold.

  • I love Roku gin! And I’m so thrilled to read about a fragrance that combines two equally delicate notes / aromas, that of gin and cherry blossoms.
I feel like gin is an especially difficult scent to grasp, in that you taste it more than you smell it, or rather, you smell it BY tasting it, unlike whiskey, cognac or other, spicier spirits.
But the way J described Grandiflora Sakura Bloom Edition makes it sound like the “stillness” of gin has been captured perfectly in this fragrance. Effervescent citrus notes, delicate floral and spicy hints, all in a “serene Japanese temple atmosphere”. Sounds like a spiritual experience, just as much as one for the senses.

  • This sounds like such an evocative scent! I so enjoy how the writer describes the journey of the perfume, from the juniper to the blossoms, and finally, to the hinoki wood.
I, too, like delicate fragrances “like very elegant deft strokes of delicate washes reminding me of Japanese watercolours”.
Magnolia Grandiflora Sandrine is my favorite fragrance from this house. What a lovely scent it is!
    Thank you for the giveaway.

  • I love cherry blossoms, but in real life to me they barely have a scent. There is that cool waxiness you mention. Gin on the other hand, in particular the juniper, is a scent I love (my favorite is Monkey 47). So is hinoki. I like the idea of them bringing a sakura scent to life. I’m in the US.

  • I thoroughly enjoyed J’s review of the Grandiflora Sakura Bloom Edition x Roku Gin collaboration. The detailed description of the floral notes and the unique blend of botanicals truly captures the essence of spring. My favorite gin fragrance has to be Roku Sakura Bloom for its delicate balance of traditional Japanese botanicals. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

  • I love that this perfume is delicate, airy and evocative according to J’d review. I haven’t taste Japanese gin yet, but I like one with grapefruit taste produced in Italy. Madagascan jasmine is in may wish list.

  • A perfume that transmits pure harmony, Japanese culture is a wise mix of ancient and modern, and in “Grandiflora Sakura Bloom Edition” I see the elegant (and apparent) simplicity of the perfume, the minimalism in the bottle, the pale pink color that recalls the beauty of the cherry blossoms in Japan.

  • Oh wow first the magnolia and now the sakura. So much I’d love to try from this house. Both just sound so ethereally sublime. Meditative yet comforting. Aloof but familiar. Unique and creative and I bet just truly beautiful. I would be sooo excited to win this generous give away. I am in California.

  • Eris.can.swatch.kaos says:

I do so love limited editions. However, with fragrance it is difficult, due to it consumed nature. I love how much the love for this perfume, and as well, the gin, is so apparent in this review. I can relate to the understated nuances a gin such as this could carry, though I’ve never tried this one. As someone who no longer drinks, I’ll have to take these words as they are on the experience of this particular gin. I love the idea of translating this into a fragrance, as a fan of juniper, this one feels like I would enjoy it heavily. I have yet to find a favorite Grandiflora perfume. I live in Oregon.

  • The gentle woody and spicy dry down, combined with the translucent sweetness of cherry blossom florals, beautifully captures the mouth feel and taste of Roku Gin, offering a smooth experience with a hint of leafy earthiness and warming spices that feel both refreshing and introspective whilst also being a perfume. Notes: Juniper, yuzu, Hinoki leaf, crisp bright air accords, sweet velvety cherry blossom, spices. A beautiful description has definitely piqued my interest especially cherry
blossom, spices, juniper and hinoki leaf. This is a house that I have got no experience this house. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • I often find myself avoiding “boozy” perfumes because I feel like more often than not they lean towards whiskey or rum (unfortunately I’m not the biggest fan). But I’ve always loved the aromatics of gin! One of my favorites is Barrel Hill because of its honey notes. Ordinarily I associate gin with more of a brisk, cool weather feeling. The addition of a spring time floral and the warmth from the incense and hinoki sound like an interesting way to balance it. Thanks J for introducing us to this fragrance!

The only gin fragrance that I have tried is Creed’s Royal Water and I do greatly enjoy it. I am from Lincoln, Nebraska and our summers can get very hot which is the perfect time for royal water to shine because it makes me feel clean, crisp, and refreshing. It has a sparkling nature to it that makes it an easy grab for the warmer months.

  • This is indeed a generous draw! Gin and cherry blossoms…. and the hinoki leaf? I know the scent of the wood, but never the leaf. Grateful for the chance to enter for such a rare fragrance. I live in the USA.

  • milleroots1223 says:

Wonderful review from J! It’s impressive that the review of the scent also gave me an idea of what a taste of the gin would be like, so kudos for that. I’m a gin-lover and have yet to give Roku Gin a try, though I do love other Japanese liquors, so I’d imagine I’d doubly enjoy it. I do suggest any fellow Canadians try out Ironworks Distillery’s Gin all the way out in Nova Scotia, it’s worth getting your hands on.
Best of luck to all from Ontario, Canada!

  • This sounds like such a gentle, beautiful perfume! I find the “airy smokiness” to be particularly appealing. My favorite gin is the Glendalough Rose Gin with its stunning pink and slight floralcy. I have also been interested in trying Roku and perhaps I will pick up a bottle soon. I am from USA.

  • OH, this sounds subtly divine. I adore the “Listening to incense” idea and how this fragrance unfolds seems like a long tranquil journey with huge back history to support the delicate beauty. I don’t drink gin, actually, nor have I gotten to experience Grandiflora yet, but this will for sure be on my radar from now one. I live in the US.

  • David Furman says:

This is a rarity and also a breath of fresh air. I like Japanese fragrances but they tend to be lighter and citric. Every now and again they are offset by an incense or a strong resinous note. Yuzu is a very common top note and here it’s no exception to the rule. This, citron, and orange peel are the usual suspects but they all have their role and play their parts well. Would like to own this and set myself apart from others. From Jacksonville, NC.

  • Sakura is one of my favorites and I really love cherry blossoms. The other notes in the fragrance are so classically Japanese that this fragrance seems to promise even more than just a simple floral fragrance.
I’ve never tried anything by the house of Grandiflora, but my favorite gin is St. George’s Terroir. I have heard great things about Roku gin but have not tried it yet. I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • I am a gin aficionado and currently have approximately 10 bottles in my liquor cabinet (5 in current rotation). One of those is the original Roku gin. It’s an exceptionally smooth drink and I can imagine the addition of cherry blossoms would enhance the delicacy of the blend. Grandiflora Sakura Blossom Edition seems to capture the experience beautifully in perfume form. Now I would love to see a Hendricks Flora Adora fragrance. MD, USA

I don’t drink Gin, but my favorite Grandiflora fragrance is Madagascan Jasmine.

The exoticism of Japanese gardens. landscape, buildings, materials and culture has been so enticing for me for years. It is this palette and taste and – just that everything is dofferent than we have in Europe – that blows a breath of positivity. The fleeting moment of spring and the pink cherry tree is what gives me a kick of revelation that I´m alive. I live in the EU.

  • This collaboration sounds incredible! I would love to have the chance to experience this fragrance. My favorite gin-inspired scent I’ve tried so far is probably is Juniper Sling by Penhaligon’s.

Sakura Bloom Edition sounds like a very interesting take on what usually is a dainty rendition of cherry blossom in perfumery

  • J, as usual, beautifully describes perfumes, combining many worlds, senses and associations. This time the world of perfumes with references to the atmosphere of the film, Japanese watercolours and, above all, the reflection of the taste of whisky in the perfume. I like the term “refreshingly delicate”. In combination with the attached photos, it helps me imagine the character of the fragrance. I was also interested in the references to the Japanese Kõdõ tradition – the quiet contemplation reminiscent of a serene Japanese temple atmosphere. I was captivated by this fragment: “letting us be part of the age-old Japanese practice of listening to the incense smoke and crafting poetry inspired by it”. I once managed to win a competition for creating a haiku. That is why now I also hope that luck will favor me and I will become the owner of this very interesting, hard-to-find, limited perfume.

what sparked my interest the most is the beautiful story behind it. the idea of a perfume that reflects the brief life of cherry blossoms and the unique flavors of roku gin caught my attention. even without trying it, I’m drawn to how it combines fresh juniper, bright yuzu, and soft florals, creating an experience inspired by Japanese culture. the idea of capturing nature’s fleeting beauty in a fragrance really fascinates me and i would love to try out this scent!

  • Reading through this review of Grandiflora Sakura Bloom Edition felt like a personal invitation into an experience I didn’t realize I wanted to have. The way the writer intertwined their passion for both perfumery and Japanese culture made me feel connected to the scent before I’ve even smelled it. The narrative was rich with personal anecdotes—comparing the fleeting nature of cherry blossoms to the tasting of Roku Gin—and that grounded it beautifully. The perfume’s delicate nature feels almost tangible through the writer’s poetic descriptions.

  • Reading this review of Grandiflora Sakura Bloom Edition x Roku Gin (that’s quite the mouthful) really makes me want to try a Japenese gin for the unique botanicals. Roku’s addition of Yuzu and Sakura flower sounds particularly good. I’m intrigued by how Laudamiel interpreted that pairing here, painting in delicate tones and airy florals, layering the floral accord over peppery incense. Wonderful. And great review, J.

I’m partial to Death’s Door gin or anything with really unusual floral notes. I haven’t tried any Grandiflora fragrances.

Really loved the description of the dance between the cherry blossom note and Roku gin. I’ve tried all of the grandiflora scents, and Saskia is by far my favorite. Boronia is another slightly boozy scent from this line, though from the description here, it looks like Sakura is more translucent than the peatier boronia. I’d love to enter the draw. I live in California, USA.

  • As a lover of Grandiflora’s fragrances, C. Laudamiel’s always striking work and Sofia Coppola (especially Lost in Translation), I am extremely curious about Sakura Bloom Edition!
My favorite from Grandiflora so far is Saskia!
    Greetings from Germany.

  • As a lover of all things Japanese AND Christophe Laudamiel, this fragrance went straight to the top of my wishlist. Thank you J for the in-depth review including the cultural references that went into this creation! Sakura Bloom’s combination of flowery + boozy + woody notes sounds incredible. I’ve recently discovered Grandiflora’s fragrances and was so impressed by their elegance, complexity and originality (fell in love with Saskia).
Would easily go for a blind buy of Sakura Bloom if only it was easier to find in the UK! Hence my entry in the giveaway 🙂

  • I tried Roku gin for the first time in Rome some months ago and it quickly become my favorite gin! I love its floral and slightly citrusy nuances, that perfectly blend with tonic water. I have not try any Grandiflora fragrance yet, but I heard that the magnolia perfumes are something to die for, and I will probably find them somewhere in Italy and try them. The fact that here the Kodo ritual is recalled reminds me of Meo Fusciuni’s Sogni, where the incense note is also inspired by Kodo, and I love it! I’m from Italy, EU

  • The review absolutely described this new fragrance in such a way as I want to try it soon. I don’t have a favorite gin or Grandiflora fragrance. US

  • Everything about this sounds heavenly! Both “refreshing and introspective,” what a beautiful representation of poetic and delicate aspects of a culture-the attention to detail, the yuzu, incense, cherry blossom, hinoki..I have Saskia’s Jasmine G. and Magnolia is on my list, and I would LOVE to be able to try Christophe’s gin-inspired Sakura Bloom. And now I have a gin I need to hint down, too!
    Beautiful review, J.

Oh, I’m so anxious to try this scent, as well as the gin. Grandiflora never misses, with my favorite being Boronia. I am curious to try this gin in my favorite cocktail, an Aviation.

How utterly fascinating, this article by J weaves delicate strands of Japanese culture and the blossoms that are world renowned with a drink that is my staple, in all its myriad expressions. I adore a good Gin shot through with its unique botanicals, I am British after all!!! Grandiflora and Saskia hold a place in my antipodean heart too and this perfume creation sounds exquisite. Hinoki is one of my prefered components so I am very curious about this one, I live in SW France, thank you for the great read and to Saskia for her generousity.

  • This sounds lovely, I do like a juniper-y gin, and a floral gin, so I would love to try this perfume, and Roku gin. I have not tried many Japanese whiskeys, so that will be my next task. I think the lightness and all the notes of Sakura Bloom seem just perfect. Thank you so much for the draw and the review! I’m in the us.
