Faîr Parfum Dawn Rose Review (2020) + Once Upon a Time Draw

Fair Parfum Dawn Rose review

Faîr Parfum is a French niche brand with a fairytale origin story. In the summer of 1884, a traveling circus made its way to Grasse, France. A local aristocrat named Francis saw Anna, a Russian dancer in the circus, and fell in love. After a heady romance, Francis married Anna—but his father disapproved, and disowned his son. As a result, Francis and Anna found themselves both penniless and homeless. Francis worked during the day for a local farmer and spent his evenings assisting a master perfumer. By 1888, Francis had developed popular perfumes that made enough money for him to establish his own perfumery. Faîr Parfum was ahead of its time. The perfumery was structured to protect workers’ rights, with a framework that limited workers’ hours, paid fair wages, and redirected profits to help educate workers’ children. In 1895, Francis established an exclusive perfume connoisseurs’ membership group for French high society called Le Club 1888, which limited access to his perfumes. In 2020, Faîr Parfum decided to open the doors of Le Club and share their fragrances with a broader audience.

fairytale fragrances

In the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale, a king and queen neglect to invite a powerful fairy to a feast honoring their baby girl. Insulted, the fairy puts a curse on the baby girl to punish the parents—one day, the girl will prick her finger and fall into a deep, endless sleep. This comes to pass, and the princess sleeps until a prince slashes his way through a thorn-filled rose wall to kiss her awake. Sleeping Beauty can be read as a metaphor for parents who try to protect their children, or a tale of love that can overshadow any misfortune. If you take the fairy element out of it, Sleeping Beauty might also be about keeping girls sheltered until they can be safely shepherded from their parents’ home into a husband’s embrace. Or maybe it’s a story about the risks inherent to neglecting good manners.

The Faîr Parfum origin story and the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale have some common elements. Both stories open with a parent’s dread of what might befall their child, and young women who were ill-prepared for what came to pass as they grew up and/or fell in love. Both stories feature young men who went to great lengths to provide for the women they love. Both feature a period of limbo following an unanticipated setback. This feeling of waiting for life to start is highly relatable during a pandemic that has often felt like a year of endless sleep.

Dawn Rose by Fair Parfum

Citrus Rose, photo by Med Ahabchane via Pixaby

Faîr Parfum Dawn Rose starts out citrus-y clean and bright, a tantalizing promise of beautiful things to come. Faîr Parfum use the maximum percentage of essential oils allowed under IFRA regulations, and at 25% concentration Dawn Rose has staying power in addition to its fresh feel. The rose is faint at first, more of a suggestion, but before long a swirling spell of spicy clove and earthy vetiver conjure a rosebud more fully, and Dawn Rose stretches open under a balmy sky. It becomes gorgeously stem-y, very green and inviting. There’s a faint, earthy depth from the patchouli anchoring its base, but the entire focus is on a soaring rose, sparkling with lingering hints of citrus.

As restrictions slowly start to lift in the here-and-now, there is a stirring feeling of hope. It’s the pre-dawn of a new spring that carries a whiff of people, magic, and new beginnings. Looking back, this may have been a modern-day fairy tale in the making. For now, more waiting, and hoping, for a fresh dawn to bloom.

Notes: honey pomelo, rose, clove, vetiver, patchouli, suede.

  • Dalya, what a fantastic review!

I’m a fan of rose perfumes – be they just hinting at rose to full blown, in-your-face look-at-me I’m ROSE scents. The pomelo opening (I love pomelo) into the soft rose-cum-green-stem sounds wonderful.

Thank you to Faîr Parfum for their generosity.

Wow just wow. First I love Dalya’s reviews. Second, I love the origin story for this perfume house. Very interesting and inspiring. I also love how the Dawn Rose sounds based on Dalia’s review. And just the fact that I didn’t know about this brand and that at one point only members of Le Club could smell these perfumes, makes me want to try it even more. I love the Greenes of the rose in it, as well as citrusy opening. I am also very interested to see how patchouli and suede in the base combine with the rest of the notes. I’m from Illinois, US.

  • The citronellol content in rose absolute makes it a great match for citrusses. I haven’t seen pomelo used in this context but it sounds very clever. I would love to use it as we enter the warmer months. I live in EU.

Notes: honey pomelo, rose, clove, vetiver, patchouli, suede. A beautiful piece by Dalya I am intrigued by the rose, Patchouli and clove notes. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

A beautiful description by Dalya has got me intrigued especially Patchouli and Rose in particular. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • I appreciate how Dalya references the commonalities between the origin story of Fair Parfums and Sleeping Beauty. I’ve never heard of the house before which I assume is due to the Le Club exclusivity. It sounds like a lovely spring/early summer fragrance. I’m glad the rose is more of the unfolding variety with hints of stem and leaves before getting to the full spicy bloom. Commenting from MD, USA.

  • Im really excited about this one, the combination of the rose and vetiver sounds amazing. Indiana USA

  • The high concentration of oils is what started to get my attention. Then the notes honey pomelo, rose, clove, vetiver, patchouli, suede. The article really rounds out my interest with thoughts of new beginnings, hope, and a fairy tales in the making.Definitely look forward to trying this fragrance.

This sounds lovely! I love reading about the ethos of Fair Parfum, and I love that this scent has such a high concentration of essential oils. Rose and citrus together is one of my favorite combinations. I’m in NYC.

Thanks for the draw and this wonderful review! I love roses in natural but also in perfume. The story behind this perfume house is so romantic and hard at the same time. I live in the EU.

  • I have always been conflicted when it comes to reses in perfumery. I love Damask rose in fragrances, but I’m kind of disturbed when it comes to Bulgarian rose. The combination of notes in Dawn Rose is very appealing to me and I find it quite unique. Pomelo, rose and suede in one fragrance are new to me. I currently live in Romania.

  • Interesting interpretation of the Sleeping Beauty tale! And rose is a great awakening smell. I’m in Slovenia, EU

  • I like the description of green and earthy notes in Fair Parfum’s Dawn Rose. I had never heard of this brand so Im happy for the introduction. I’m in the USA. Thank you for the review and draw.

  • Thank you, Dalya, for another great story!

I really like the optimistic tone of this review and I am very curious about this fragrance, because Faîr Parfum use the maximum percentage of essential oils allowed under IFRA regulations (25% concentration).

Also, my love for roses is endless, starting with fresh cut & natural ones, as Rosebud from a local niche brand, Scents of Man, Red Roses from Jo Malone and ending with inviting ones, such as Delina Exclusif & Oud Satin Mood Extrait.

Thanks for the chance! I live in EU, Bucharest.

  • Lovely origin story of Fair Parfum. After reading this review of Dawn Rose, I checked out their website at https://fairparfum.com/ . It is beautiful and adds to the review by Dalya. I guess I am intrigued by what fragrance formula they must be using that they can create a perfume meant only for French aristocrats at one time, and with only a very few notes of honey pomelo, rose, clove, vetiver, patchouli, suede. The high concentration of oils (highest allowed by IFRA, at 25%) and high quality of ingredients, and their relative proportions, and process of making the perfume, all go into making Dawn Rose a great perfume. Thanks for the review and draw. Writing from the USA.

  • Thank you for the beautiful review, Dalya, so full of hope that we all need so badly right now… I have always loved roses, in Szczecin, my hometown, there is a big rose garden with so many roses of different shades and aromas. Yellow, white, baby pink, deep red, blood red… I bury my face in roses wherever I can. Last summer, when i was happily pregnant for the first time, we visited a sleepy, beautiful town Kamien Pomorski in the North of Poland. There is a gothic cathedral there and I found the most majestic, pink-yellow roses with flowers as big as peonies growing nearby… They smelled divine, fresh and balmy, turning the cloudy, sleepy summer day into bliss. Greetings, keep up the great work. Poland, EU

Another lovely review from Dalya, I am very grateful for it! I like how she ties the legend of the Sleeping Beauty and the roots of this super unique and initially exclusive perfume house. I have been warming up to rose based fragrances as of late, and the vetiver and patchouli, both of which I albolutely love, make Dawn Rose sound amazing to me. Fresh rose with a great staying power is a perfect fragrant idea for warm spring days to come. I am based in the Republic of Ireland, EU

  • I tend to have mixed feelings about roses. I feel nowadays there are so many rose-oud combinations, a bit too heavy, cloying and overdone, and the other predominant rose group, to me, are those done in vintage fashion, perhaps more balsamic, earthy or animalic.
Dawn Rose is neither of the two and it does indeed sound charming with the freshness achieved with the unique pomelo note, as well as the elegance provided by the suede and clove. I would consider myself truly lucky to smell this.
    I am in Romania, EU.

  • I love Dalya’s review, talking about love and loss. Her analogies to Sleeping beauty and the perfumer, Francis are so interesting. I love rose and Dawn Rose sounds beautiful. Pomelo, Rose, Patchouli, mmmmmm! Thank you for the beautiful picture of a ivy covered Sleeping Beauty! USA, California

  • I liked how Dalya described the fragrance’s evolution: from citrusy, to spicy, to green. As a fan of rose and pomelo as notes in perfumery, this sounds like something I would enjoy. The parallel drawn with Sleeping Beauty is lovely and dreamy. I am in the USA.

  • Dalya always knocks it out of the park with her reviews, and she sure did it with this one! I never heard of the Fair Parfum house, but the story enchanted ms, as did the olfactive description! I would love to try it! I live in Croatia, EU

  • I get the impression, after having read the story concerning the beginning of this fragrance house, that I might love their fragrance releases without having tried anything from them, and this is the first time that I’ve ever heard of them. According to Dalya’s review, I definitely want to try this one: I love all of the notes for it and in combination with each other, it seems like it would be refreshing and high-quality throughout the wearing of it, and I like that they use the maximum amount of essential oils allowed. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • Rose and citrus is a classic combo! The special appeal of this one is that it has such a high concentration of essential oils to convey the natural beauty of a new rose about to bloom. I appreciated how this review shared some of the history of this house and conveyed the atmosphere of magic and promise. I’m in the US, thank you for the draw. <3

  • Really nice how Dalya brings together the origin story of Fair Parfums and Sleeping Beauty… never heard before of Faîr Parfum , but it is so interesting to realize the firm was ahead of its time: protecting workers’ rights, paying fair wages, and redistributing profits… Back to sleeping beauty, we can imagine the relation of this tale and the endless sleep we have been for a year already…The Rose is a promise of the beautiful things to come, now are sprouting, soon blooming… like the Faîr Parfum Dawn Rose… even with the concentration of 25% of essential oil is still possible to fresh feel, green… Seems a great job! I live in Spain, EU.

  • Claumarchini says:

A great thank you to Dalya for this great review! Fair Parfum’s history really resembles that of a fairytale, and I liked the comparison with the Sleeping Beauty tale. Very interesting indeed.
I absolutely love rose perfumes, and the more the better: rose in the head notes, rose in the middle notes, rose in the base notes…so this fragrance particularly appeals to me as I think I would enjoy it thoroughly.
    Greetings from Italy

  • This green rose sounds heavenly right now when winter is not over yet (at least where I live). The scent of spring, new beginnings and the rose/vetiver combination all are inviting. I live in Maine, USA.

  • Christos GX says:

Amazing review,i loved the fact that the review contained an amazing backstory of the fragrance and that it resembles a fairytale. The fact that it is based on sleeping beauty makes think excactly the kind of person i want to give this to.I live in Greece

  • Yes, it is a fairytale origin story, indeed. It consists of all elements that make a great movie plot, and as such it’s a great reminder that one’s real life has its unique path with turns and twits, that can be conquered with determination and faith. I find the origin story utterly optimistic and inspiring.
The photograph of the sculpture of Sleeping Beauty, the main character of the namesake fairy tale, is adoring. Dalya found interesting parallels between both, the story of the perfume house and the fairy tale. Her reviews are creative, thought-provoking, and inspiring. Thank you, Dalya!

I liked how Dalya described the fragrance’s development and composition: a citrusy bright start that develops into a fresh rose base lightly embraced by vetiver and clove and the citrus still lingers around. For my current olfactory mood, the most compelling attributes that Dalya ascribed to Dawn Rose are: fresh feel, very green, and inviting. I have always been a huge rose lover, but in 2020 I started to become craving citrusy, fresh fragrances, so Dawn Rose seems to be perfect for me. 🙂

    Greetings from Slovenia (EU).

  • What a romantic review, Dalya! Already love how this house’s origin story and ethos.
Faîr sounds loverley! Ow that beautiful rose with its vicious thorns.
Will definitely go an explore this House. It sounds dreamy. Marit, NL

Thank you for the beautiful review Dalya!

I love rose based scents and I loved how your review tied this fragrance with the beautiful story of the establishment of the house and it’s commitment to good practices.

Fantastic review Dalya! I’d never heard of this house, and really enjoyed reading how it was established…out of the love story! Dawn Rose sounds like a beautiful rose fragrance, with depth, but also a citrusy and green component. Thank you for the review and the giveaway. Located in the US.

  • I enjoyed reading about the egalitarian roots of Fair Parfum and Dalya’s description of the citrusy rose. I’m always interested in new interpretations of rose. I live in the USA.

  • I enjoyed the discussion of the meanings of Sleeping Beauty. And I could use more hope & optimism right now. Also, maximum allowable amounts of essential oils! (USA)

  • Michael Prince says:

Great review Dalya, Dawn Rose sounds very intriguing to me. A fresh citrusy rose fragrance with some spicy clove and earthy vetiver sound heavenly. It appeals to me because I really enjoy Rose and fragrances and this one has the highest concentration of essential oils allowed which means excellent performance as well. I am from the USA.

  • I really enjoyed the history surrounding this perfume. I looking forward to sampling it in the future. It sounds heavenly. The clove note definitely makes it for me. Many thanks for this most informative reivew and many thanks to Faîr Parfum for making this draw possible. I’m in the USA

  • Bryant Worley says:

Dalya’s review was very good. What appeals to me about Dawn Rose is, first, the string power (“Faîr Parfum use the maximum percentage of essential oils allowed under IFRA regulations, and at 25% concentration Dawn Rose has staying power in addition to its fresh feel.”), and as a Rose lover, the fact that the rose is the main player, albeit not aggressively (“a swirling spell of spicy clove and earthy vetiver conjure a rosebud more fully, and Dawn Rose stretches open under a balmy sky. It becomes gorgeously stem-y, very green and inviting. There’s a faint, earthy depth from the patchouli anchoring its base, but the entire focus is on a soaring rose, sparkling with lingering hints of citrus.”)

I enjoyed reading about the Sleeping Beauty fairytale. Dalya’s interpretation and its relation to Fair Perfume were fascinating. I am thinking about what Dalya wrote about how we are all possibly waiting for life to (re)start after this pandemic that has kept many in a state of sleep. I also liked reading about the citrus and stem elements of Dawn Rose. I love citrus mixed with roses.
    I live in the USA.

  • Absolutely wonderful origin story of Fair Perfumes that I want to know more about now. Thank you for the introduction! 🙂

I thought I had left a comment the other day, fwiw. . .but anyway, I am a big fan of roses both in perfumery and nature. The smell of the stems is one that I can conjure in my mind and is most welcome when one is tired of winter, so this sounds quite fabulous.

    I live in Maine, USA

  • I adore roses in perfumes. The biggest part of my collections contains rose perfumes. Each one is different from the other. This one sounds just wonderful. I’m still missing a green rose scent. I’m in EU.

  • Yes, there is a stirring of hope! Between the record number of vaccines being given and the first day of Spring, I am filled with so much gratitude and hope that we’ve turned a corner with this virus.

I love the notes of this fragrance. Including patchouli always adds depth to any rose perfume. I can’t get enough of rose scents. This one sounds perfect for the new Spring season.
    I live in the USA.

  • The high oil concentration and the unique citrus rose combo sounds quite interesting, would love to try that

  • oh that photo at the end of the rose on the porch — i used to have a porch like that! and it smelled so good …yes, a soaring rose …

I read this review and bought Dawn Rose. I am addicted to it. Dayla, you have described it amazingly well. The sillage, projection and longevity of this perfume are brilliant. A few spritz in the morning last me until bedtime. I get a lot of compliments when I wear Dawn Rose.

  • Great review of a beautiful brand and perfume. I found Fair by accident, I was looking for a luxury perfume with ethical credentials. The perfume, the bottle and packing are all opulent, the ethics and founders’ story are like no other.
