Exaltatum Riverwalk Review (Eglija Vaitkevice) 2021 +The Promise of Green Giveaway

I have ever smelled the fruits of a plane (platanus) tree, the inspiration for Exaltatum Riverwalk but understand the need to build an emotional connection with nature and experience the sense of freedom that comes from being outside on these early spring days after being cooped up over a long, cold winter. Sometimes you just need to find the perfect time to fully appreciate a fragrance and while I initially thought Riverwalk was lovely, I am finding a deeper connection as I wear it again months after my first experience.

Exaltatum Riverwalk is one of two 2021 releases by perfumer Eglija Vaitkevice. In my previous review of By Serpentine I was enthralled with its ability to conjure up savory curry dishes commonly found at picnics in the Middle East.  Riverwalk again returns me to the outdoors but much closer to my current home in New England where despite the calendar indicating we should be well ensconced in spring; I find myself having to hunt for signs that winter is finally over.

While  early spring flowers are blooming, and trees are beginning to grow their tiny green buds, brown remains the predominant color of the woods in my backyard.  Still, this is one of my favorite times of the year to hike the trails and paths through the forest where the streams are flowing swiftly from the winter melt and clumps of green poke through in the most unexpected of locations.  Temperatures are at that perfect medium where a light jacket fends off the breeze yet the sun, barely filtered by bare branches, warms your back as you shuffle through the winter worn leaves and fallen debris.

Exaltatum Riverwalk was inspired by Eglija Vaitkevice’s walk along the Thames. It is the perfect embodiment of early spring and interestingly it doesn’t have the  overtly bright juicy start as you might expect from the notes of citrus and fig leaves. Riverwalk  has a subdued and woody opening with only hints of the fig that is still to ripen on the tree itself.  You feel the awaking of the forest as the fragrance deepens.  Chrysanthemum, which tends to have a more earthy and herbal aroma than other floral notes, is ingeniously utilized by Eglija along with another unexpected green note: Artemisia (wormwood).  This is a note that I have come to adore for the unexpected herbal green it imparts upon a fragrance.  Some of my favorite perfumes include Artemisia such as: Memoir Woman by Amouage, Mousse Illuminee by Rogue Perfumery and Nuit de Bakelite by Naomi Goodsir.  I mention these not because they smell like Riverwalk but, because they all have that vegetal and almost bitter green edginess to them.

Again, the effect does not conjure fields of grass or a tree in full summer bloom, Exaltatum Riverwalk is the promise of green yet to come. It is green still hidden under winter chilled dirt and layers of last year’s fallen foliage.  Only the heartiest of herbs and flowers will emerge this time of year and those are what Riverwalk highlights in this unique and elegant scent.

As the hours pass and the sun begins to set behind the distant hills, the chill in the cloudless sky reminds you that winter has not yet completely loosened her grip.  Exaltatum Riverwalk also darkens with the most natural smoky vetiver and hay-like coumarin mingling into, what feels to me, to be a green tobacco aroma.  The overall effect is of coziness and warmth, just as is required on these mid spring nights.

Riverwalk perfectly captures  spring in New England, which must be very similar to London’s Hyde Park where plane trees abound this time of year.  I am delighted to have found the proper season to fully appreciate this perfume

  • Like Rachel, I love the feeling and the smell of early spring. I also lived in London for a while and took lots and lots of walks by Thames, and I miss those walks terribly! This perfume sounds beautiful. I live in NY, USA now.

This sounds absolutely wonderful! Even though summer is my favorite season, I love the time of year when you first feel the warm sunshine on your cheek, and when you first time go outside without a thick winter jacket. I love the view of the pavement glistening from the melting snow. And most I love the feeling when I know – the spring is coming, and not too long until everything will bloom.
This fragrance, according to the review, sings exactly about this feeling. That is why I would love to try this fragrance.

  • The amazing details and interesting information spark my interest. I live in Poland, EU.

  • Green is my favorite color and that first green of spring is so special. The promise of that green and all it beings, captured in a scent is sublime. In maryland.

I live in Pittsburgh, PA – Rachel really captured my interest with the descriptions of Hay and Smoky Vetiver – this sounds like it would be the perfect transitional season vetiver fragrance to take me from Nishane Sultan Vetiver in Winter to Guerlain Vetiver in Summer – Keeping my fingers crossed!

Thanks a million from the UK

  • A wonderful piece by Rachel really loving the notes especially Patchouli, Vetiver and Coumarin. Thanks a lot from the United Kingdom

  • My attention was caught by the evocative description of exactly the weather I’m seeing in my home town right now, spring struggling to break through from winter, but my ears really perked up at ‘hay-like coumarin’ and “green tobacco”. This sounds like an experience I’d love to try! I live in the USA.

Riverwalk perfectly captures spring in New England just as is required on these mid spring nights. I am from Bucharest Romania Europe

    This sounds lovely.
The phrase–‘ You feel the awaking of the forest as the fragrance deepens’, really intrigues me. I enjoy the woodiness of fig leaves, more that the sweetness of figs. I live California, USA.
    Thank you for the drawing.

Tank you Rachel for this great review. I love perfumes that got strong connections with nature and the details of the review already made me feel on the Thames in spring.
Plus, one of my favourite note is Artemisia (I have mousse illuminee and it is one of my favourite)
Hope to be able to try it!

  • I love the details and imagery in Rachel’s descriptions and the idea of an earthy-spring scent! I live in the USA and would love to enter the giveaway drawings!

What a delightful name which speaks tons about the perfume itself! I find myself absolutely drawn to green scents this time of year, I find nothing complements the dewy, fragrant mornings which still have some of the crispness remnant from the previous months of spring, than a perfume oozing with herbal, aromatic, green notes. So Riverrun spoke to me right away. The smokiness from the vetiver also sounds extremely appealing. I live in the EU.

  • NituNicolae says:

Oakmoss and vetiver is exactly what i would want to smell while having a “riverwalk” (pun intended). Great review, i like green fragrances all around and do own quite a few of them. Thank you for the opportunity! From Romania, EU.

  • What sparked my interest the most was seeing the oakmoss note listed in the base. US

  • This sounds like a perfect May fragrance. I loved the image of hikes before the trees have new leaves- I definitely want to hike while wearing this fragrance!

Thanks for the review, writing from the EU.

  • “Only the heartiest of herbs and flowers will emerge this time of year and those are what Riverwalk highlights in this unique and elegant scent.” I would love to try such a perfect perfume for the season

    I live in Portugal

  • I have yet to try a perfume with a chrysanthemum note; it’s not a flower you see featured everyday. I live in New England and am super curious to see (or smell) for myself whether this really does resemble spring in New England! USA

  • BostonScentGuy says:

This sounds lovely! The “promise of green to come” is one of my favorite stages of spring and what we’re experiencing right now as well. I love that this is supposed to capture the earthiness and woodiness of visible dirt as well as the germination of new greenery. I’m getting used to the rhythms of spring here in Colorado–lilacs finally making their first overtures, as well as leaves on the cottonwood trees. Lots of cherry and apple trees blooming and exhaling their subtle, greenish, lightly floral scent. Thanks so much for this draw! I’m in the US.

  • Chrysanthemum, which tends to have a more earthy and herbal aroma than other floral notes, is ingeniously utilized by Eglija along with another unexpected green note: Artemisia (wormwood). Loved it!

  • I’ve never spent spring in London, so I’m curious to see what it smells like! I am in the US.

Rachel!!! ❤️❤️❤️ What a gorgeous review!!! I’ve been wearing and looking for “green” scents lately; Exaltatum sounds wonderful! You mention Amouage, Rogue, and Naomi Goodsir’s use of artemisia – this is very interesting & something to which I need to pay more attention! Now to find Exaltatum to make the study complete! ❤️ Thank you for a fantastic review and opportunity! USA

  • GennyLeigh says:

Green fragrances are made for spring when everything is new again. The citrus, vetiver and chrysanthemum all combine to provide a lovely olfactory river walk. Nice review, Rachel! MD, USA.

Riverwalk sounds amazing… sounds perfect for a cool spring night!!! A complex fragrance with different layers… I really enjoy By Serpentine… I would love to add another Exaltatum to my collection!!!! Mas, US.

Spring is well on the way. Rachel’s evocative description of anticipating nature’s rebirth has captivated my attention. It’s intriguing how our frame of mind intertwines together with a perfume we put on.
Thank you for a generous giveaway and wonderful review of the Riverside.

  • Mirea Luca says:

(missclick) Great review! The green nature of this fragrance is what peaks my interest. i am not accustomed with the note of Artemisia, but the way it was described here makes me so curious about it. This fragrance also seems mysterious, representing not the full force nature green, but the green yet to come. I thought that was a beautiful description. I live in Romania, EU

  • Bryant Worley says:

I think Rachel did an excellent job in breaking the fragrance down, and making it seem unique. That, and the fact that I’m partial to ‘green’ fragrances, has me intrigued.

Ilive in Waldorf, Maryland, USA, and my IG is @Brygantor_1.

  • Oo, this sounds gorgeous. I love a green fragrance, and I love the idea of one with “wintery” aspects, too, or aspects of the overlap between winter and spring.
    (USA)

  • Southirina says:

Chrysanthemum! How interesting! I’ve always wondered why this beautiful note is not used more often. For me is more of a autumnal note so it’s quite a surprise I find it in Exaltatum Riverwalk which is so springy. I don’t know how Artemisia (wormwood) smells like.
    Hugs from Romania

  • merry607 says:

I’m also in the northeast and longing for Spring! Would love to try this scent. I’m in New York.

  • foreverscents says:

I am fascinated by the Thames. My dream is to one day go mudlarking and find a treasure from decades ago. I also love fragrances that are vegetal, almost bitterly so. Oakmoss and vetiver are two of my favorite fragrance notes. I loved Rachel’s description of spring.
    I live in the USA.

  • The promise of green yet to come. Such a hopeful sentiment. A scent with such a sentiment sounds perfect. I am in the US

  • Exaltatum Riverwalk seems to be a wonderful spring perfume from Rachel’s review. It is beckoning spring, which by the way is also the name of a lovely incense by Shoyeido, a Japanese incense company. I wasn’t familiar with plane trees nor am familiar with artesmisia, so I am very curious about Exaltatum Riverwalk. Thanks for the review and draw. From USA.

  • wandering_nose says:

It feels like I had been waiting way too long for the spring to come this year so I can relate to Rachel in her perception and sentiment. I am just after spending a wonderful weekend outside of the city, in a place full of greenery, winding roads and the unstoppable vegetation around. Had an amazing walk in the forest with a river flowing through it earlier on today, breathing in all the peacefulness and Riverwalk sounds like it could me back to those moments in a blink. The notes make me speechless. Thank you from Ireland, EU

  • I am a spring lover my self and I always look forward to it, because the smell of flowers and herbs is so refreshing to me. This fragrance surely is fantastic because it has the smell of the spring in New England and that is totally amazing.
I would love to have it myself.
    I live in the USA.

  • roxhas1cat says:

This sound amazing as we are continuing to have cold weather into May and had snow on the ground when I returned from Miami after spring break (in my flip flops). I see Rachel is also anxiously awaiting spring weather. I want to walk along the Thames!!! I got a passport at the beginning of Covid and it still sits…….waiting. I’ve gotten into green fragrances more recently as I needed to branch out from my usual gourmands. Haven’t smelled any of this line yet. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • Thanks for this wonderful review Rachel!

I might not know what the Plane Tree smells like, but I am familiar with strolling along the Thames. Especially in the mornings the fresh smell of the flora is energizing and uplifting. Sadly I have moved away from this area, but I’d love to experience it again with Riverwalk.

In the colder months, I love to wear sweet fragrances, but as it gets warmer I become less of a sweet tooth. What really piqued my interest is that Riverwalk has a vegetal and almost bitter green edginess. This sound perfect to me and I look forward to trying Eglija Vaitkevice creation.

    Greetings from the UK!

  • Michael Prince says:

I enjoyed Rachel’s review of Exaltatum Riverwalk. Inspired by perfumer Eglija Vaitkevice’s walk along the Thames. I love how Rachel describes this beautiful fragrance as being the embodiment of Spring. A very fresh, green, herbal, and aromatic experience. My Spring in Ohio this year is very similar to Rachel’s in New England. I am from the USA.

  • Great review Rachel, as always! What especially sparks my interest is that I heard of Exaltatum, but sadly haven’t yet tried any of the perfumes. This one, judging by the note listing and Rachel’s description sounds just right up my alley! I live in Croatia, EU.

  • According to Rachel’s review, Riverwalk by Exaltation sounds like a unique and elegant spring fragrance inspired by the outdoors. A subdued and woody opening with hints of fig with a bitter green edginess to the fragrance. Has a smoky vetiver , coumarin and a green tobacco feel in the base. Gives a feel of coziness and warmth. Sounds like s unique spring fragrance I would like to try.

I’m very interested in trying this fragrance. After having read the review, I can gather that this fragrance is something I would enjoy. I would like to see if this fragrance could cause me to think of spring season in New England. I live in the U.S.A.

  • I adore green fragrances and especially perked up at her description of “a promise of green yet to come” and “the awaking of the forest.” It just sounds so charming and perfect. Arkansas

  • joetelegram says:

Rachel, thank you for the great review! I have never smelled the “fruits of a plane (platanus) tree” either, but I too love being connected with nature and the outdoors. I also relate with what you say when you describe the experience of having a deeper connection to and understanding of a fragrance after you have already become familiar.

I really like how you describe “Exaltatum Riverwalk” as “the promise of green yet to come.” As I look around me and see signs of green, spring, newness, and life, I am looking for a fragrance that takes on similar characteristics.

  • More than any other broad genre, I love a green fragrance, especially those that pastoral and grassy. They often remind me of spring or the smell of long days outside. Rachel captures the beauty of this time of year expertly—clumps of green, brown woods, dots of early-season flowers, and crisp mornings yielding to warm afternoons. Speaking to Exaltatum Riverwalk, I was interested to read the citrus and fig opening is more subdued and woody than would be expected, and made more green by an herbal, vegetal character. I also love hay and green tobacco notes. This sounds like a must-try for me. Thanks for the review Rachel!

  • sephrenia300 says:

Lovely review Rachel! What sparks my interest about Rachel’s review is the idea of a green fragrance that doesn’t embody spring or summer in full bloom, but rather the “promise of green yet to come”. Like Rachel, I live in New England where spring has been very reluctant to come this year. And despite the fact that I would very much love spring and summer temperatures to be upon us, I very much enjoy the scents and bracing intensity of this season. I have many green florals and full blown spring-summer fragrances, but I don’t have anything like this first budding hope as winter fades in my wardrobe, so I am very eager to try this one. I live in the US.
