Ex Nihilo Iris Porcelana Review (Dalia Izem) 2022 + Sevres Porcelain Draw

Iris Porcelana

Dragonfly wings catching the sun. The last light of afternoon filtered through gauze. Bubbles floating across a city alley from an unseen wand. The rueful sweetness of a remembered smile. Such fleeting beauty pulls at the heart like the catch of a childhood song or, for me, the evanescent scent of iris. And, while many lovely iris perfumes exist that emphasize iris’ pastryish sweetness and face powder elegance, few convey the flower’s fleeting, translucent beauty of the just-opened blossom. This is the scent of Ex Nihilo Iris Porcelana.

Givaudan perfumer Dalia Izem has created a genderless fragrance that is said to be inspired by classic French porcelain. Certainly, there is a delicate sheen to Iris Porcelana that makes me think of Sevres plates, and a careful but unobtrusive classical construction. Ex Nihilo’s website describes this as a “second skin” scent, and Ex Nihilo Iris Porcelana is an intimate perfume. Rather than melding with the skin the way many clean musk-centric scents do, Iris Porcelana, wears like a secret revealed only to those who come close. While other flowers broadcast their lush beauty on the breeze, iris keeps her perfume close until it is uncovered by peeling back her petals, an intrusion so intimate it feels almost taboo.

Izem’s construction unfolds slowly like the iris herself. Iris Porcelana opens not with iris but the shadowy, damp velvet of woody violet. Izem’s dusky misdirection could make one think this is a rainy spring violet perfume, reminiscent of Guerlain’s Après L’Ondée, but with less of that great classic’s sedgy mournfulness. But the violet is providing a stage for the glowing iris heart that soon emerges. Violet’s dark purple gradually gives way to the silvery-green scent of young iris, softly off-sweet. Satiny rose arrives just after and Ex Nihilo Iris Porcelana begins to warm like Galatea newly imbued with life. The rose adds colour and a gentle lushness to the perfume’s heart, shifting what could have been a powdery skin scent into a chiffon floral veil.

In the base, cedar anchors the gossamer airiness of the fragrance and adds a touch of its woodsy, somber coolness. Violet leaf reappears as a partner to the cedar again but more muted, lending Iris Porcelana a tinge of forest floor. Sandalwood wraps around the perfume like a blond bow, smoothing out the floral edges and adding its sandy mellowness. Stepping back and smelling Izem’s creation now, I am struck by how subtly it has evolved from rainy wood violet to silky iris-rose-sandalwood confection. If you crave a bedtime fragrance to make you dream of spring, Iris Porcelana is waiting like a flower about to bloom.

Notes: Violet leaf accord, iris pallida, rose, sandalwood, musks, cedarwood.

Lauryn’s description of Iris Porcelana as a scent that retains its secrets until coaxed through a close embrace and a delicate peeling back of its petals was a beautiful reminder of my favorites: Iris Bleu Gris (MPeG) and Le Cri de la Lumiere (Parfum d’Empire). I am certainly enticed!

This would be my first introduction to the brand, and appreciate the opportunity.

I love iris note in perfumery. I really enjoy more Prada l’homme, Dior Homme Intense, and Dior Homme Parfum. I am from the US. Hopefully I can win the draw.

  • Nice review by Lauryn! This skinscent made by Ex nihilo sounds really interesting because the treatment of iris and woody violets. I love scents that only people that come to my personal space can smell. This one seems pretty amazing.
My favorite Ex Nihilo fragrance is Fleur Narcotique.
    I live in the U.S.

  • Love Iris note. Lauryn’s description of Ex Nihilo Iris Porcelana made me want to explore this Fragrance. Skinscent is always exciting when it’s notes you love. Thank you for this Chance. USA

  • I’m new to Ex Nihilo , Iris Porcelana is a versatile well made fragrance suitable for different occasions, from office settings, close encounters , to cuddling night times. Nice bouquet of iris , rose and violets that Dalia Izem gently put in a wooden box.
    That’s what Iris Porcelana is.
    Thanks for the draw

  • My favorite Ex Nihilo is Cuir Celeste. My favorite notes are iris and leather. I love the way Lauryn describes the use of violet to give the iris depth. I am anxious to try this one and even to try layering the Cuir Celeste along with it just to see what would happen!!

“… evolved from rainy wood violet to silky iris-rose-sandalwood confection. If you crave a bedtime fragrance to make you dream of spring, Iris Porcelana is waiting like a flower about to bloom.” I am so there! NY state. I haven’t really tried Ex Nihilo before.

  • I’ll start by saying I don’t have a favorite Ex Nihilio fragrance, because I’ve never tried one, so this is the perfect place to start.

I enjoy scents that may only reward the wearer or someone who’s remarkably close so Lauryn’s observation of it being an “intrusion so intimate it feels almost taboo” sounds like a very private fragrance. Also, the notion of it being a bedtime scent is also appealing. I know I enjoy iris as a note in other fragrances my wife and I share.

    I’m in North Carolina.

  • BostonScentGuy says:

This sounds absolutely beautiful! Love to hear how it captures both the greenery, forest floor, and gentle floralcy of iris as well as some of the powdery sweetness/second skin-like feel of many orris scents. Sandalwood “wrapping around the scent like a blond bow” is such an evocative and well-done descriptor. I actually haven’t tried any of this brand’s fragrances! Thanks so much for the generous draw. I’m in the US (Colorado).

  • What a beautiful review.i was on the fence about blind buying this because I didn’t think it would be interesting. I love that this is a bedtime scent of an Iris opening
    Thank you Lauren and indigo

  • Love iris and violet so this sounds like a good one. I like how the review says it starts out like a watery floral but then changes to an iris sandlewood. Sounds very soft and beautiful. I haven’t sampled much from this house so don’t have a favorite yet. Thanks for the draw. In VA USA.

  • Lauryn!!! ❤️❤️❤️ What a gorgeous and informative review! The ideas inspiring this fragrance are beautiful and quite attractive to me (sometimes, this is exactly the mood one wants). I’m surprised at how curious I am to experience this scent (much is due, no doubt, to your great genius at perfume review). I’ve not fallen for the samples of Ex Nihilio that I’ve tried so far (personal preference? Perhaps I haven’t found the right one yet? Perhaps their house style just isn’t me?). I did try an Aurelien Guichard fragrance by Ex Nihilio, Jasmin Fauve, that was suitable. I have enjoyed their lighter take on rose de mai, Rose Hubris. Perhaps I would enjoy this lighter, gauzy one? In any case, it’s always good to review & re-evaluate! Thank you for this opportunity! ❤️ USA

  • I’ve been wanting to try Iris Porcelana since I saw it was being released on Ex Nihilo’s Instagram. I very much enjoy iris/orris in fragrances and this sounded a bit different than what I currently have or even have tried for that matter. Lauryn’s review has reinforced that desire to try this perfume and in fact added to it. I enjoyed how she described the subtle changes throughout as well as how the perfume wears. I liked the line about the rose changing the perfume from “what could have been a powdery skin scent into a chiffon floral veil.” The sandalwood also sounds like a great touch and like it rounds out and grounds the scent. Great review! I’ve not tried any Ex Nihilo scents yet though I’d like to. Thanks for the generous draw! USA.

  • Ex Nihilo Iris Porcelana is a unisex scent that wears as a second skin. It emphasizes the fleeting beauty of iris and carries a spirit similar to Guerlain opres l’ondee. I am in US.

  • Lauryn’s review of Ex Nihilo Iris Porcelana is beautiful. The opening paragraph caught my eye, or should I say, my nose. The description of how subtle nuances of life experiences form the basis of Ex Nihilo Iris Porcelana is lovely. And the description of how initial violet scent changes to an iris and sandalwood combination tells a lot about this perfume. Unfortunately I haven’t tried any Ex Nihilo perfumes, yet, so no favorites, yet. I loved the pictures in this review by Lauryn too. Thanks for a lovely review and a generous draw. I’m writing from the USA.

  • Lauryn’s review of Ex Nihilo Iris Porcelina had me at iris and sandalwood. I don’t own nor have I sampled any fragrance from this house, but that could always change should my name be drawn.

  • This sounds so pretty!!! I love both violet and iris notes, but I’ve never smelled a fragrance that combined both. They each are such lovely, powdery florals. And I’m intrigued with the development of the fragrance how it starts off almost aquatic, yet dries down woody. I’ve never tried any Ex-Nihilo scents so I’d love to have this added to my collection.
    I live in the USA.

  • What struck me was this opens with violet leaf rather than iris. This would be my house fave if I win. US

  • Lauryn describes Iris Porcelana beautifully. And what a great idea for a scent. There is something indescribable about the scent of porcelain, and I can totally see it with iris. I haven’t tried any Ex Nihilo fragrances.

  • Iris Porcelana sounds like a wonderful spring perfume. I liked the description of it as a “silvery-green scent.” I’m a fan of Ex Nihilo. One of my favs is Devil Tender. Thanks for the opportunity to sniff. Mich USA

  • Constancesuze says:

I don’t have a favorite Ex Nihilo fragrance, but gossamer, Galatea, and dragonfly wings sounds unbearably appealing. I’m in the US.

  • ScentedKnits says:

This sounds like a fragrance I need, as I love iris and I love when wearing a scent is like having my own secret that not everyone in the room gets to share, I have not yet tried the Ex Nihilo line and would love to be able to. I live in Vermont.

  • Bryant Worley says:

I really appreciated Lauryyn’s description of the non-linearity of the fragrance, deftly describing the stages that goes through. She makes it sound so lovely and cozy that, even though I’m not usually a skin scent person, that I really want to get my nose on this so that I can really experience the luscious iris powderiness, along with what I’m assuming is a well-blended fragrance.

I live in Waldorf, MD, USA.

  • I have not tried the Ex Nihilo brand, but I want to try Iris Porcelana. I like that this fragrance is described by Lauryn as not powdery but a “chiffon floral veil”. Not your typical violate/iris scent. I am in USA.

  • An iris scent that doesn’t open with iris! Intriguing. But I have always love iris and would love to try it is a skin scent. Sounds delicate. In maryland.

  • I enjoyed this article. Thanks, Lauryn !
Love Ex Nihilo perfumes. This sound so romantic and tender. Love iris very much, ecpecially in Dior Homme, Iris Cedre NG, Iris Poudre FM.

  • The combination of a soft musky iris turning to a rose and sandalwood base sounds beautiful. Most days, I enjoy something understated that reveals itself up close. Great review and thank you for the chance. Fleur Narcotique is my favorite as it’s the only I’ve tried. TX

  • Violets and iris and woods are a magical combination. Lauryn does a lovely job conveying the ethereal nature of the perfume. I can see why Lauryn describes it as a bedtime fragrance that makes you dream of spring. I have not tried any Ex Nihilo scents before. I’m in MD, USA.

  • Oh my, this sounds stunning! I LOVE iris scents and this sounds like nothing else in my collection. I have plenty of sweet iris scents and makeup iris scents but this sounds like a side of iris I need in my collection! The description paints a picture of something ephemeral and dainty. Like a fairy hoping over dew cover petals. Ive only tried Fleur Narcotique from Ex Nihilo and it was lovely! I am located in the USA.

  • What strikes me about Iris Porcelana from Lauryn’s review is her description of violet setting the stage for the Iris to come forth and I’m intrigued by the pairing of Iris with rose. I’d love to smell this! My grandma’s name was Iris so there’s something special to me about Iris focused scents.
I do not yet have a favorite ex nihilo perfume as I haven’t had the chance to sniff any yet, but I’d love the opportunity to do so.

  • LL Kinikini says:

Fleur Narcotique, my first Ex Nihilo experience, after sublimating across their Paris storefront pre-pandemic (my first and last trip to Paris), much like a rush of what I imagine a fast and fatal first date…Love Shot was on the other side….the sharpness tempered by the lingering narcolepsy lacing of a dream within a dream…Now, what strikes me of Iris Porcelana based on Lauryn’s review is the promise of a marriage – balanced in fidelity, softly suggesting that the rampantly promiscuous Knight and Queen of the “unseen wand” (the Narcotics), transcend the ecstasy and nestle into the eternal clasp of the gold-leafed Empress dressed with fecund purpose and the gold-laden Emperor, divine masculine armed with the depth of wisdom whose notes of chivalry are enough for another thousand years of nobility and guarding of Empire…

  • Lauryn’s description of an intimate, muted floral is intriguing. I have gravitated to louder ones recently so something just for me sounds nice. I’d love to try something by the house and don’t have a favorite yet. Maybe this is it. Thanks! NC

  • Violet, iris, and sandalwood sounds divine! I look forward to my irises blooming every spring but will sadly be moving this year. Lauryn’s description of Iris Porcelana as ‘a bedtime fragrance to make you dream of spring’ sounds like the perfect scent to remind me of my beloved first home! My current favorites from Ex Nihilo are Fleur Narcotique and Honore Delights.

  • Iris Porcelana sounds really good . Such a beautifully made cozy , and inviting iris, and rose based fragrance , I’d love to win a bottle.
My favorite Ex Nihilo is called Amber Sky , Harrods exclusive . Gorgeous fragrance, but unfortunately it costs £495 , that’s approximately $700
    Thank you for the opportunity

  • Ex Nihilo is a brand I have no experience with.
“And, while many lovely iris perfumes exist that emphasize iris’ pastryish sweetness and face powder elegance”
Exactly Iris often smells like sweeter carrots.
After reading Lauryn Beer take on Iris Porcelana, I remembered my days living in Paris, trying to fulfill my dreams of becoming a Pastry Chef . I’m the spare time, I used to go to Jardins du château de Versailles to relax. I imagined eating traditional Carrot Cake, and having a walk through the gardens. That’s the way I imagined Iris Porcelana
Appreciate the review , and the giveaway campaign

  • What a beautiful review!
Seems to me this perfume is very balanced and tender!
Shadowy velvety woody violet, satin rose, young iris – all together sounds very beautiful and sensual.
    I love Chanel 19 Poudre.

  • This name of perfume is enough for make me be intrigued! And I expect beautiful and tender iris.
    Thanks for beautiful article!
Rainy wood violet and silky iris-rose-sandalwood confection will be amazing! Looking forward to test this soft beauty.

  • Pastryish and face powder. Sounds good to me. A touch of forest floor with violet, wow. I recently got into violet perfume, I’d love to win this. I’ve only smelled one from the line: Viper Green. A very nice perfume, but I expected more green with the word “Viper” in the name. Thanks for the nice review Lauryn, seems like a peaceful perfume. USA.

  • Allison Smitha says:

Thank you for the review Lauryn! I’m a big fan of Iris and this sounds perfect for the springtime. I would love to try this out! Sometimes iris fragrances feel a bit stuffy, but this sounds perfectly dreamy and breezy!

  • Michael Prince says:

What interests me about Iris Porcelana based on Lauryn’s review is how this beautiful Iris based floral fragrance isn’t your typical powdery Iris, but a clean musky just bloomed Iris. A fragrance that is inspired by French Porcelain that is genderless intimate skin scent with beautiful clean musky florals that Givaudan perfumer Dalia Izem has masterfully created. I don’t have a favorite Ex Nihilo fragrance because I haven’t tried anything from this brand. I am from Ohio, USA.

  • I haven’t tried anything yet from this fragrance house but I have heard of them. For me, if a fragrance doesn’t have very good projection (or longevity), I would still want to wear it as long as I enjoy it’s scent, and this fragrance seems like it is very high-quality, enjoyable, and something which I’d like to wear while relaxing in bed. I can like the use of iris in fragrances, and I’d like to try this fragrance. I live in the U.S.A. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity.

  • IvanVelikov says:

I wonder what kind of fragrance Lauryn called “powdery skin scent into a chiffon floral veil” ??
Ex Nihilo i have no experience with, in Iris Porcelana i see classically structured woody floral. Contemporary and refined fragrance i’d wear with a suit.
Thank you Lauryn , and Indigo Perfumery
    USA

  • Lauryn’s review was almost dream-like wasn’t it? It’s nice to hear lovely review about a fragrance that is more “intimate”. These days, it’s all about the big-projecting, long-lasting beasts. Sometimes we all just want something sheer and spring-like.

I haven’t tried any Ex Nihilo offerings yet, but several are on my (admittedly long) list of fragrances to sample. I want to try Ambre and Atlas Fever.

    I live in the US.

  • Ex Nihilio i do not know, but Iris Porcelana feels like a great date time fragrance. It’s right up my alley for such occasions, iris , rose , all softened with musk and sandalwood. Such fragrances I wear on a date only .
    Exciting giveaway, USA

  • sephrenia300 says:

Wonderful review Lauryn! What strikes me about Iris Porcelana based on Lauryn’s review is how it’s inspired by classic French porcelain, with the delicate sheen and classic structure, a beautiful scent softening the hard exterior like a “second skin”. I also like how she describes the intimate scent of iris it as slowly warming like Galatea, a lovely myth of startling beauty. Such beautiful imagery I can’t help but be drawn to. I don’t yet have a favourite Ex Nihilo fragrance as I haven’t tried any so far, but I suspect Venenum Kiss would be my favorite form the notes. I live in the US.

  • I’m new to Ex Nihilo , Iris Porcelana is versatile , well made fragrance suitable for different occasions, from office settings, close encounters , to long cuddling night times. Nice natural smelling bouquet of flowers, non confectionery sweetness, and a little bit of both sensuality and lust , that’s what Iris Porcelana is.
    Thanks for the draw

  • Iris Porcelana gets a lot of traction lately , lots praises on Instagram.
Not every fragrance should be obnoxiously loud, there’s time for fragrances like Iris Porcelana. Like Lauryn well said, you are inviting people into your scent bubble, into your inner space.
If I have to rate my favorite Ex Nihilo fragrances:
    1. Night Call
    2. Atlas Fever
    3. Amber Sky
The fragrances I’ve mentioned are from the higher end of Ex Nihilo portfolio, all are fantastic.
I have a feeling Iris Porcelana is also great, in its own inviting way
