Etat Libre d’Orange RIEN Review (Antoine Lie) 2006 + “Noctural animals” Draw

Etat Libre d'Orange Rien

Etat Libre d’Orange Rien, edit by Nicoleta

“I’m Nobody! Who are you?
Are you – Nobody – too?
Then there’s a pair of us!
Don’t tell! they’d advertise – you know!

How dreary – to be – Somebody!
How public – like a Frog –
To tell one’s name – the livelong June –
To an admiring Bog!”

One of my favorite commercials, back from 2000, for Sony’s PlayStation 2, was called “the flea circus”. In a cold, lab light setting, a voice narrates the flea training experiment: the fleas were placed inside the jar and the lid was sealed shut. They were left undisturbed for three days, then, when the jar was open, the fleas would not jump out. The experiment showed that the fleas will never jump higher than the level set by the lid, their behavior being set for the rest of their lives, and when these fleas would reproduce, their offsprings will automatically follow their example. Then the voice would prompt us to “escape the circus and live beyond the limits of the imaginary lid”.

Etat Libre d’Orange founded in 2006 by Etienne de Swardt was one of the pioneers of the niche fragrance houses, who managed, through innovative concepts and a fearless approach to push the lid of customer’s expectations regarding what artistic perfumery can bring to the table.

ETAT LIBRE D’ORANGE ad

A note from the brand: “Do not believe what you first see… under the demureness of the name, the spicy savour of blackcurrant bays and the musky notes of blonde suede. Rien is a second skin perfume, a perfume that clings to the body and perseveres in the mind. Like venial sin on the verge of becoming mortal, irresistible and resolutely pervasive. As light as mohair and as precious as cashmere, the fragrance envelops skin with a powdered caress. It has the meticulous elegance and hypnotic beauty of a modern Dorian Gray, in a feminine/masculine version.

The connection to Dorian Gray immediately springs to my mind Mr. Wilde’s words: “It is absurd to divide people into good and bad. People are either charming or tedious.” I think the same can be (loudly) said about fragrances. Rien (nothing in French) is so far away from anything intimate, quiet, demure or skin-scent that I have always read the name as an ironic response to the “what are you wearing” question.  Etat Libre D’Orange Rien is a nocturnal beast with cushioned steps, eyes reflecting in darkness, fogged breath held in, long muscles sprang in tensed anticipation. That is, until (or IF) you tame the beast.

Some are Born to sweet delight. Some are Born to Endless Nights. On my skin, Rien paints a low contrast, benighted picture of things that bloom with joys of a dark hemisphere. Irreverent, personal, introspective, complex, with a nod to past classics and a wink to modern, urban vices, Rien is a polarizing fragrance that you either love or hate.

Like a young vampire that has feasted on his elders, there is an undercurrent of old-world nostalgia flowing in Rien’s bloodstream, that brings to my mind the bitterly seductive old leather note of Piguet’s Bandit, and an overall elegant tailoring of a vintage pattern in the mixture of non-austere incense, dark green oakmoss and unapologetically feral animalic notes.

what does rien mean

Anomalie Art Club Berlin, via official facebook page

Wearing this redingote with a rigid backstitch, Etat Libre D’Orange Rien smirks and flashes us with a surprisingly modern-leaning-futuristic dry-down.  It feels like traveling forward in time, to a post-pandemic roaring ’30 (2030’s that, is), somewhere in the basement of an industrial dance club, hidden deep below a neon-lit Berlin. Warm latex,  smoke machines, sweet-smelling rubber toys, faux leather whip tassels, and a tongue-in-cheek juxtaposition of artificial cleaners wafting right on top of the human-animalic low hanging cloud.

Echoing from the speakers, behind closed doors, a classical tune from almost half a century ago comes into the DJ’s rotation. The crowd cheers.

“It’s always tease, tease, tease

You’re happy when I’m on my knees

One day it’s fine and next it’s black

So if you want me off your back

Well, come on and let me know

Should I stay or should I go?” The Clash

Top notes: Black Pepper, Safraleine (Saffron & Leather Accord), Incense essence Orpur®; Heart notes: Leather, Iris Absolute, Cistus Absolute; Base notes: Patchouli essence Orpur®, Vetiver essence Orpur®, Treemoss

Wow, what an unusual and pleasantly unsettling image that left in my head! You can trust Nicoleta to do that with her brilliant reviews!
I also loved the cheeky vampiric reference there! Rien sounds like a fascinating scent for sure! I would love to have a sniff! I’m based in the EU!

  • I love the idea of these beautiful top and heart notes. I do like ELd’O scents, especially jasmine et cigarettes. Rein sounds wonderful too. In the USA.

  • ELDO, eldo, eldo. What a glorious house. I enjoy their quirky, irreverent and often fascinating releases, however I actually do not own any bottles from them. Spice Must Flow would probably be my favorite from the house. Rien sounds lovely, and I quite enjoyed the PS2 reference 🙂 Thank you from Canada.

I love Etat Libre d’Orange as a fragrance house. Everything that I tried form them I love. I haven’t tried Rien yet but it is my absolute number one on the “have to try” list. I was always intrigued by different reviews of Rien (which can often be very different) and looking at the notes I think this might be a perfume I can adore. I love Nicoleta’s review. She has very cleaver intro and I love the part with the Sony commercial. I think it describes this brand perfectly. I also love her description of Rien and it’s juxtaposition of notes. I am even more drawn to Rien after reading this review. I’m from Illinois, US.

  • I haven’t tried anything by this brand, yet, but from Nicoleta’s review and the listed notes, Rien seems intriguing. Nicoleta’s introduction with Sony PlayStation advertisement was interesting to read, and if the brand adheres to the fearless philosophy of pushing the lid of customer expectations, as Nicoleta says, then it’s definitely worth checking out. Also, Rien means nothing in French, so that makes me want to find what nothing smells like. Thanks for the review and draw. I am in USA.

A beautiful description by Nicoleta has got me intrigued especially the feral animalic notes. My favourite from this house is Fat Electrician. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

The notes sound great especially Patchouli, Incense, Vetiver and leather. A house that I need to explore further. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • I’ve always loved Rien intense a little bit more but this one is also beautiful nevertheless. Slightly spicier and sharper.
    I’m in France.

  • There are so many references here that speak to me! Nicoleta’s use of pictures and familiar pop culture references around this (The Clash and PS2 references) along with the modern futuristic grunge theme really sounds like something memorable if not “pleasurable” and that can be something hard to pull off… I see it almost as a challenge to make sense of wearing such a fragrance and therefore you get your own sense pleasure when you pull it off, like beating the system!
Would love to give this a go!

  • How enticing, the promise of “joys of a dark hemisphere”! And all the reminders of the world(s) of Oscar Wilde Dorian Gray made my day. I love to be reminded of people and things charming rather than tedious…
    (USA)

  • Incense and Leather are two of my favorite notes. In true Etat fashion it sounds like this one is pushing the artistic boundaries. The “futuristic dry down definitely has my attention. I live in Indiana USA

  • Nicoleta’s review is gorgeous! I particularly love that this skin scent is essentially entitled “nothing.” As Nicoleta noted, the response to the question “what are you wearing?” is nothing! I love scents of leather, sandalwood, and vetiver and I’m keen to try this one, it seems deep and mysterious based on this review. I have yet to try anything from this house, but always find their releases enticing. Commenting from NC, US.

  • ascentofdreams says:

You had my interest at “post pandemic roaring ‘30s”! It sounds positively unfettered by convention, and how badly do we need that now!
    Based in US.

  • I haven’t tried this one from Etat Libre d’Orange, but by looking at the list of notes, it seems pretty interesting and I think I would enjoy it.
I am commenting from Europe. Thanks for the review and the draw!

  • Andreea Florica says:

Etat Libre d’Orange has always intrigued me. I know all their fragrances are surrounded by this aura of flamboyancy, with Etienne de Swardt being the bad kid in this game that always has different ideas for the perfumes under his umbrella, ideas that do not normally fit to the average taste.

What I liked most in this review was the following paragraph: It feels like traveling forward in time, to a post-pandemic roaring ’30 (2030’s that, is), somewhere in the basement of an industrial dance club, hidden deep below a neon-lit Berlin. Warm latex, smoke machines, sweet-smelling rubber toys, faux leather whip tassels, and a tongue-in-cheek juxtaposition of artificial cleaners wafting right on top of the human-animalic low hanging cloud.

This speaks to me : Etat Libre D’Orange Rien is a nocturnal beast with cushioned steps, eyes reflecting in darkness, fogged breath held in, long muscles sprang in tensed anticipation. That is, until (or IF) you tame the beast.

Such a vivid description! Thank you for this! I am in Europe, Romania.

  • Etat Libre D’Orange releases some curageous and unexpected perfumes with funky names . The ones i have tested and worn i love, i’m intrigued about Rien and Antoine Lie’s approach ! Thanks for review and the draw, from Romania with love!

  • Valentina says:

Warm latex, smoke machines, sweet-smelling rubber toys, faux leather whip tassels! Holly guacamole! it’s like Berghain all overt the place! Me want! I live in Romania, EU.

  • Would love to try this one, ELDO is a great house, exploring the scent world and not settling for the conventional. I am particularly intrigued by the contrast between the name of this one that would suggest a skin scent and the image Nicoleta drew , suggesting anything but a skin scent.
Loved the Dorian Gray reference and the Berlin neon one. definitely want to try this one.
Thanks for the give away, I am based in RO, EU.

  • Sorohan Adriana says:

I like Nicoleta’s consideration of Dorian Gray “It is absurd to divide people into good and bad. People are either charming or tedious.”
I need something as mysterious and beautiful as this perfume

  • Amazing review of a beautiful fragrance! I’ve tried a 5ml decant of Rien and Nicoleta’s analogy of modern leaning futuristic tendencies of the perfume are spot on. It truly does smell like a futuristic club scent… well, if they open in the future… I live in Croatia, EU.

  • Thanks Nicoleta for the review. I always liked Etat Libre d’Orange and their fragrances and Etienne de Swardt, the owner/ creative director is able to translate many ideas to the fragrances and work with great perfumers. Nicoleta describes the brand perfectly and her comparison with the Sony commercial is great. She show us that Rien (nothing in French) is “an ironic response to the “what are you wearing” question”, so Mr. Lie gaves us a polarizing fragrance :old leather note, non-austere incense, dark green oakmoss and animalic notes. Wow! Let´s travel forward in time, welcome the roaring 2030! I live in Spain EU

  • I was already interested in trying Rien from ELDO when an acquaintance was actually describing it last week! So Nicoleta’s review came at just the right time! Love her description of a modern-leaning-futuristic dry down, that sounds fascinating.
Thank you for the draw! & hello from Canada

  • What a very cool review of Rien. I need to get my nose on this as I only have Rien intense so I can smell the difference
    USA reader

  • Love it or hate it is the perfect way to describe this one. It is exactly as loud and encompassing as described. Thanks so much for the draw!

    I am in Canada.

  • Like a young vampire that has feasted on his elders, there is an undercurrent of old-world nostalgia flowing in Rien’s bloodstream, that brings to my mind the bitterly seductive old leather note of Piguet’s Bandit, and an overall elegant tailoring of a vintage pattern in the mixture of non-austere incense, dark green oakmoss and unapologetically feral animalic notes. The notes sound great especially the patchouli, incense, vetiver and leather. Thanks for the draw! EU

  • Etat Libre D’Orange is my favorite house. Even the scents I hate, I love… if that makes sense. Rien sounds like one that I will just love, no hate. Also, I was obsessed with the concept of “nothing” for quite a long time, so it is perfect in this way as well. I am in the US

  • Courtenay Courier says:

You had me at “love or hate”. I tend to be one who loves a smell that is transformative, even if it puts me on the set of Blade. Canada

  • I love Etat Libre d’Orange, most of their perfumes I truly admire. I did not manage to try Rien previously. Read some of the different reviews and really want to try this one out. I am convinced this is a perfume that I could fall in love with. Thanks for the great review Nicoleta and the opportunity ELdO! Living in the EU

  • Nom de Guerre says:

The Dorian Grey connection seems interesting and I love the backstory on Rien that I’ve read on some forums – that Rien is a f*** y*** from Antoine Lie to IFRA regulations. I have Rien Incense Intense in my collection but I’ve always doubted if I should have gone with Rien. Greetings from Latvia.

  • Christos GX says:

It seems like a very interesting fragrance that would need confidence to pull off and that is what gets me excited about this one.I loved the vampire refference and the fact that i was reminded to listen to The Clash again.Amazing review from Greece

  • I do enjoy unique unisex fragrances. I was intrigued by the mention of incense, oakmoss and and animalic notes. Thanks for another fabulous article and generous draw! Mich USA

  • Wonderful article from Nicoleta. Etat Libre d’Orange is a fascinating house. I love their originality and from what I’ve experienced, their fragrances are quite controversial.

As someone who lived in Berlin in the late 90’s, I recognize the post pandemic, industrial, neon-lit scene that is set. I have Tom of Finland and it gives me a similar vibe, but this perfume sounds more intriguing. I would love to be taken to this world once more.

    Thanks for the giveaway!
    Greetings from the UK.

  • I have to say, among the fragrances released by ELdO, I wasn’t too familiar with Rien. I also had imagined, by the name, that it was perhaps a more subdued, easily worn, likeable scent.
Nicoleta helped shed some light on it and I’m now surprised to find out that this is a nocturnal, dark, ominous, syncretic perfume. The “warm latex, smoke machines, sweet-smelling rubber toys, faux leather whip tassels” vibe sounds quite like a shocker.
Would love to try Rien, from the EU.

  • I am very interested in this fragrance because it embodies many features I love: vintage vibes, bold leather, earthy oak moss, and an animalic touch. I am curious to see how all of these are interpreted in a modern, “futuristic” manner. I am in the USA.

  • The fact that it’s a polarizing fragrance, that you either love or hate really draws me to it, so I’d love to wear it. I live in Italy.

  • I’ve heard for some time that Rien is one of the must haves of the house and it’s one of the few that I haven’t tried yet (along with Secretions). I’m most interested in its daring animalic facets if other ELDO’s give any hint. I still have yet to find my perfect “in your face” scent. Maybe this is it? My faves from the house so far are Spice Must Flow, Fat Electrician, Putains, Marquis, and 500 Years.

    Posting from PA, USA. Thanks.

  • ELDO always does such unique fragrances and I love the idea of the fusion of old fashioned and modern style in a single fragrance.
    Located in Canada

  • I can see why Rien may conjure images of vampire as it is incensy, spicy perfume. I am in US.

  • GennyLeigh says:

Lovely review Nicoleta! Leather, incense and of course, iris are all notes I gravitate towards. I find this combination earthy and grounding. Love the reference to the vampire as well. Favorite ElDO is Jasmin et Cigarette. Commenting from MD, USA.

  • “Etat Libre D’Orange Rien is a nocturnal beast ” is all you had to say to get my attention. Most of the time I want a commanding fragrance not a sweet or powdery mess. Like how all situations described where commanding, assertive, and animalistic. Definitely want to try and like to be owner of this magnificent scent.

  • This one has been sitting on my “must try” list for some time now. I enjoy this house. I agree that they’re often about pushing the boundaries–yet in a fun way that doesn’t seem to be mocking their own fans. Thank you for the review, the draw, and the Clash earworm. I’m in the US.

  • ElenaChiss says:

I don’t know this one from ELDO, but the notes do seem like something that I would like. I very much enjoy incense, iris, leather, vetiver in every fragrance that has them
I am in the EU. Thanks!

Specific scent! I remember when I’ve tried it at the first time – I was impressed.

I love the connection to Dorian Gray and the chosen quote from Oscar Wilde which is my favourite author. Any scent that is good for Dorian Gray is a must for me!
    I live in Europe, Romania.

  • flosolentia says:

I like the comparison with Piguet’s Bandit, this is my all time favorite fragrance and the fact that it has the same leather makes Rien even more attractive for me. What I also like about Nicoleta’s review is how connection to Dorian Gray is conveyed. Very poetic review, thanks!

  • wildevoodoo says:

I love Rien, and this description did it more justice than I ever could. First of all, I love the Dorian Gray comparison- my favorite book for one of my favorite fragrances! The description of the opening as somewhat old-world is spot on (aldehydes, leather, and oakmoss will do that to a fragrance), and the lovable weirdness of the drydown is perfectly encapsulated by Nicoleta: “Warm latex, smoke machines, sweet-smelling rubber toys, faux leather whip tassels… artificial cleaners wafting right on top of the human-animalic low hanging cloud.” I couldn’t possibly have said it better. I jealously hoard what remains of my sample of Rien and would love to get my hands on a bottle. I am in the US! 🙂

  • Belladonna says:

have to read everything I can that Nicoleta writes! I love her comparing wearing this to a “redingote with a rigid backstitch”! Not just a visual, but a tactile reference! Sounds like a gorgeous fragrance! In the US.

  • Claumarchini says:

I have recently bought a very rich discovery set from ELDO, with 20 fragrances, and I could not agree more with Nicoleta when she speaks about innovative concepts and a fearless approach… About pushing the lid of customer’s expectations regarding what artistic perfumery can bring to the table… ELDO’s perfumes are really different and Rien definitely stands out! Dark and opulent, seductive and pervasive… Would love to own a full bottle! Greetings from Italy

  • Excelent review. I love the quote on Wilde – yes, I also think that Etat Libre d’Orange fragrances are a good example of what he says: the important thing is that none of them leaves you bored.
I’d love to get to know this one – I was astounded by Rien Intense Incense!
    I’m from EU (Portugal)

  • this sounds like anything BUT rien :).
ELDO were always good with the names, but this one is a winner in my cards – what are you wearing? Rien! no, really…what are you wearing? Rien [insert giggle] and I am living in Europe.

  • forrestanez says:

Every single note in this are ones that hit home with me. I love the idea that it is a love it or hate it type of fragrance, its almost like a selling point for me. I also like the vampire analogy and the mixing of old and new together. Great review!

    I live in Hawaii, USA

  • Fragrance Capital says:

Nicoleta’s review of Etat libre D’Orange Rien is gorgous. She has a very clever intro and I liked the part with the Sony commercial. Nicoleta described this fragrance house beautifully. I haven’t tried any of Etat libre D’Orange yet, but my absolute belief is they are very distinguished in the fragrance world. I was always intrigued by different reviews of Rien and looking at the notes I think might be my favorite one. I am even more drawn to Rien after reading this review. Greetings from BiH.

  • I loved the comment about reading the name as an ironic answer to the ‘What are you wearing’ question. And s great suggestion, to wear the perfume to 2030 clubbing.

  • wandering_nose says:

Nicoleta’s description of Rien has me totally seduced. I love polarizing fragrances and I absolutely adore ELDO. The modern and slightly subversive edge to their creations puts them among the unforgettable and always-different perfume houses. The Sony PS2 commercial reference felt like a waft from the old days and the notes of Rien are nothing but amazing. I would love to get the chance to tame the bold nocturnal beast. Thank you from Ireland, EU

  • I haven’t tried anything yet from this company; I’m interested in trying some of their releases, like this one, for example, because I’m interested to see how this fragrance is “futuristic” and other things that have been said about it. I’m also interested in trying this fragrance on account of its list of notes and what it’s been compared to. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • I have always wanted to try this one and the description of a lively modern/futuristic vision with vintage flair sounds exactly what I need once we can safely escape the self-imposed lids we’ve been under and can live fully again.

  • Rien picked up my interest because of the slightly animalic leather, the moss and the incense , plus Nicoleta PlayStation 2 childhood memories 🙂
At the moment my number one Etat Libre d’Orange fragrance is Spice Must Flow, and I find the smell of it very similar to Chai Masala – Rose, Cinnamon, Ginger, Cardamom . If you know Chai Masala, you know Spice Must Flow. Fabulous smell, and unlike some other Etat Libre d’Orange fragrances it’s a powerful one, really powerful. My other two favorite Etat Libre d’Orange fragrances are Remarkable People and You or Someone like You .
Thanks to Nicoleta for her review , and also to Etat Libre d’Orange for the giveaway.

Your review left me unsettled, which was an in interesting effect. I found the comparison of this fragrance to a futuristic dance club very neat. That imagery really did justice to the notes.

What sparks my interest based on Nicoleta’s review of Etat libre D’Orange Rien is her brilliant description of how unique this fragrance sounds. Dark and unique and just my kind of fragrance. I am from Ohio, USA.

  • Well, the article definitely did a good job of providing an eclectic and discordant setting to place the fragrance in. My interest is definitely piqued! There are many notes in there that I like and I think it would be interesting to say the least to see how it behaves on my skin. It’s definitely not a soft and fluffy one here! I’ve never tried anything from this house before, but have been eyeing their sample set. I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • macaroni023 says:

I loved the note from the house and the reference to Dorian Grey. From description it looks tike a perfect character to represent this perfume …sharp dark, mysterious, unique and iconic.
Thank you for the draw and I am based in EU

  • I have tried some fragrances from this house and they have something special and magnetic about them. I did not test this however, altough I really wish.
Perhaps if I am unlucky, I will go for the sample set to discover most of the line.
    Thanks! Europe

I really liked how Nicoleta highlighted the uniqueness, as well as the darkness of the fragrance: “On my skin, Rien paints a low contrast, benighted picture of things that bloom with joys of a dark hemisphere. “the bitterly seductive old leather note of Piguet’s Bandit, and an overall elegant tailoring of a vintage pattern”

Ok you got my attention, I’m a tailor after all let’s see how the vintage tailoring patterns combine with darker leather and incense.
I have experience with Etat Libre d’Orange, Experimentum Crucis i had to smell, the reason was Despina glorifying it. Exceeded my expectations , and now i have it. Suits me well, and …. I know Michelyn it’s not a fan of the expression, but it’s a beast . Remarkable People for example, is A LOT weaker compared to it. The two in my possession.

Etat Libre d’Orange do have fragrances for every occasion, 500 Years for example , my favorite Etat Libre d’Orange smells like chocolate rose and cardamom tarts, with rose water .Fat Electrician is my second favorite Etat Libre d’Orange. Combination of vetiver and the cream is done very well.
Appreciate Nicoleta review, and the giveaway campaign

  • I’m amused by the use of irony with this perfume. It seems to have some very classic perfumey notes, yet is called nothing. I’d love to try it. I live in the USA.

  • petergigov says:

I know Rien , so boys , and girls go to bed, grown ups are here now. I believe it’s a mature fragrance, and trying it first is a must.
ELDO fragrances are kind of unpredictable, Remarkable People for example somehow reminds me of Haribo grapefruit gummy bears, and I was expecting something different. The sample came with my bottle of Spice Must Flow , fragrance on a different level compared to the regular Etat Libre d’Orange fragrances.
Up until checking out Spice Must Flow, 500 Years and Experimentum Crucis , my favorite Etat Libre d’Orange was my Bijou Romantic.
    Right now:
    1. Spice Must Flow …is 10/10
    2. 500 Years
    3. Experimentum Crucis

    Hahaha
You don’t have to convince me anymore, I’m sold.
I do have one Etat Libre d’Orange fragrance in my collection. I told this story before, but I’ll keep telling it, when i was a kid , grandma was growing pumpkins,blind-bought Tilda Swinton Like This . Now the name is changed to just Like This , I don’t know why. On my second bottle “Tilda Swinton” part is missing , but the fragrance is the same , it’s not reformulated if someone wonders. The smell will always remind me of grandma .
Today i ordered samples of the premium Orange Extraordinaire collection , and I can’t wait to try them all.
Thanks to Nicoleta , and to Etat Libre d’Orange

Both Rien and the bigger, and meaner older Rien Intense Intense brother i know. Both are throwbacks to a different time type of fragrances , when hairy chested alpha males were on pedestal. If there’s some sort of time traveling, it should be not forward, but backwards in time to the 70s and 80s.
Polarizing fragrance indeed, such fragrances you either love , or hate.
I now have 4 Etat Libre d’Orange frags- 100 ml’s of You Or Someone Like , Like This , Experimentum Crucis and my favorite 500 Years . To me it’s sweet jammy rose , with sweet chocolate in the base , making it way more gooey sweet, than floral. Obnoxiously loud fragrance, I love it.
    All profiles i already follow
    Thank you
USA only, not for long I hope

  • Rien is steampunk , futuristic manga/anime kind of fragrance , i like it.
Sampled “I am trash” because of Despina Veneti review here , and bought it soon after. Again Despina “Queen of Etat Libre d’Orange” was the reason i found my beloved Experimentum Crucis, fragrance I can’t get enough off.
    Thanks for the draw
USA most of the year, and Germany from time to time
