Laboratorio Olfattivo Baliflora review

Laboratorio Olfattivo Baliflora bottle by Gail Gross ©

When I first encountered the new Laboratorio Olfattivo Baliflora, I immediately fell in love – but I also found myself somewhat intimidated by the beauty of the fragrance. As a perfume reviewer blessed with an extensive collection of vintage and modern fragrances, I occasionally encounter a perfume that simply defies description. The new Laboratorio Olfattivo Baliflora is just such a fragrance.

Laboratorio Olfattivo Baliflora review

Women by the Lotus Pond, painting by Adrien-Jean la Mayeur de Merpres

“I search for phrases to sing your praises, but there aren’t any magic adjectives to tell you all you are!”  (Too Marvelous for Words by Richard Whiting and Johnny Mercer).  What does a reviewer do when poetry, storytelling, even musical and visual references can’t capture or do justice to the artistic appeal of a fragrance? From my first whiff Laboratorio Olfattivo Baliflora by the legendary master perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena, I found myself at a loss for words.

Jean Claude Ellena

Jean-Claude Ellena via Jean Claude Ellena

“You’re just too marvelous, too marvelous for words like glorious, glamorous and that old standby, amorous. It’s all too wonderful.  I’ll never find the words that say enough, tell enough, I mean they just aren’t swell enough.”-Johnny Mercer.

Jean-Claude Ellena, with a career in perfumery spanning over forty years, has created some of our most beloved and iconic fragrances. From Van Cleef & Arpels First in 1976, to The Different Company (Rose Poivree among others), his years as in-house perfumer for Hermes, collaborations with numerous other brands and as an engaging author, Jean-Claude Ellena has bequeathed a legacy of innovation and elegance to the world of perfumery.  His recent works, including Houbigant Essence Rare (2018), Perris Monte Carlo Rose de Mai and Jasmin de Pays (2019) and my new love, Laboratorio Olfattivo Baliflora, present solid evidence that the veteran perfumer is as creative and forward thinking as ever.

Admittedly, every fragrance presents a challenge to the writer to capture, decipher and translate the ephemeral nature of olfaction into words. The name and the word “Baliflora” suggest the enchanted island of Bali, frangipani flowers, tropical lilies and lotus blossoms. While these elements are certainly floating around in the aether that is Laboratorio Olfattivo Baliflora, my experience of the perfume is inescapably integrated into the temperate environment of the Pacific Northwest. With Laboratorio Olfattivo Baliflora the humid landscapes, exotic blooms and graceful dancers of Bali have managed to find their way into the breezes of my early summer garden.

Laboratorio Olfattivo Baliflora by Jean Claude Ellena review

Balinese Women by a Pond in the Garden of Sanur, painting by Adrien-Jean la Mayeur de Merpres

My first impression of Balifora is that of an extravagant bouquet of lilies, frangipani and orange blossoms painted in Jean-Claude Ellena’s signature watercolor style, pastel hues that merge and meld into each other on textured, ivory colored paper. Diffuse is the word! There are no sharp edges here, no defined lines or stark, startling silhouettes.  In Laboratorio Olfattivo Baliflora my perception of each olfactory color is like dipping a brush into pigment, touching it to wet paper and watching the color spread out and open up like a blooming flower. Laboratorio Olfattivo Baliflora is the scented sound of soft bells or wind chimes resonating together. The ancient instruments of the Balinese and Indonesian Gamelon orchestras come easily to my ears.

I sense the heart of Laboratorio Olfattivo Baliflora, born, like master Padmasambhava, from within a lotus blossom.  Using modalities of flavor and touch, I taste and feel a smooth, light, citrus mousse, garnished with geranium, jasmine and orange blossoms. The flowers, the confection, the music all cling to and caress my skin, intimate and enduring.  After twelve hours I still find myself at a loss for just the right words to describe Baliflora. But of one thing I’m certain, the ethereal, otherworldly Baliflora has to be one of my favorite fragrances for 2019.  “…And so I’m borrowing a love song from the birds, to tell you that you’re marvelous, too marvelous for words.”  – Johnny Mercer

Notes: Mandarin, absolute of orange blossom, frangipani, lily, geranium, lotus, jasmine and musks.

Disclaimer:  I would like to thank Laboratorio Olfattivo for my new love – Baliflora.   My opinions (and my words) are my own.

I’m blind. But my sense of smell is well developed. Through the words of Gail I managed to imagine the island of Bali with its flowers and colors and bringing my wrist to my nose I could also capture the scents of this Earth and its flowers. I will be forced to make a Blind buy.

  • This fragrance sounds like an exotic trip to somewhere I’w never been before. I very like the notes also. Thank you very much for the draw. I live in the EU.

Laboratorio Olfattivo is such an underated house. I do own bottles of Alambar and Daimiris , and i love both. Value for the money is great.
Now sure about the US prices , because i bought Alambar and Daimiris when i was in Europe , but over there both are € 98,00/100ml , and also don’t forget if you’re not EU citizens you can get some of the VAT back at the airport, when you’re going home.
I highly recommend to all fragrance lovers on Cafleurebon to get the sample set .
I’m in for the tropical floral goodness called Baliflora.
Just checked Saboratorio Olfactivo site , and Baliflora is part of a more high-end line called Masters’ Collection. Samples are not available atm – i wanted the get samples of all four 🙁 Just asked them on @laboratorioolfattivo why , and i’m waiting for a reply.
    Thanks for the opportunity
Virginia USA , or London UK at least 97/100 times.

  • The review captured me completely. There is nothing better than a bold floral for summers especially with orange blossom in my case. This sounds wonderful and I know I would love it.
Thanks for the draw. I am living in Germany.

  • fazalcheema says:

Anything for Ellena always excites me. Baliflora is a floral fragrance that defies descriptions and something to be experienced, according to Gail. Kinda reminds me of Cleef First from Ellena. Ellena started his career with big florals and now is trying to end his career with florals, too though florals now represent his new style. I am in US.

  • Nice review. I’m not the biggest fan of florals in general but jasmine and musk is a good mix. I would love to give this a try, thanks for the chance. I’m in the EU.

  • When I think about Jean Claude Ellena I think about Terre d’Hermes Hermes and the original Declaration Cartier. Can’t help it , because I own , and love both.
Laboratorio Olfattivo is completely new to me. Never been to Bali unfortunately , but I do imagine lush and tropical floral fragrance full of energy and
    Positive vibes.
    Thanks for the generosity

  • I enjoyed how this review captured the otherworldly quality of this floral bouquet that includes unusual floral notes like lilies, lotus, and frangipani. I appreciate the opportunity to win this. I live in the USA.

  • tuiu silver says:

    I really love fruity/floral fragrances.
The way Gail described the floral bouquet that gives this watercolor style, drying down to a Lotus, jasmin and orange blossom sounds just lovely to me.
It’s really beautiful the way that Jean Claude Ellena managed to create this beauty, and it’s really inspiring the way that Gail interpreted it.
I’m from US and would love to win this gorgeous fragrance haha.

  • I would definitely wear Baliflora while watering my garden during the cooler morning hours. It sounds fabulous. Thanks for the opportunity to sniff! USA

  • Thank-You Gail and Laboratorio Olfactivo for the review and chance to win a bottle of this beautiful Baliflora fragrance. Between the lovely notes and paintings the utter awe that Gail is experiencing from this scent it’s a must try for me. Jean-Claude Ellena definitely a perfume hall of famer knows how to create a masterpiece and I would be beyond to be able to not only try but actually own this bottle of Baliflora. USA

  • I am intrigued at how this fragrance left the writer at a loss for words. It is quite rare that a fragrance does this, and for someone who has smelled as many creations as the writer, that says a lot. (Commenting from FL, USA)

  • The fact that writer was left speechless makes me curious. (Commenting from FL, USA)

  • The indescribable always has immeasurable appeal. I would love to try this fragrance. I live in the United States.

  • NiceVULady says:

“My first impression of Balifora is that of an extravagant bouquet of lilies, frangipani and orange blossoms painted in Jean-Claude Ellena’s signature watercolor style, pastel hues that merge and meld into each other on textured, ivory colored paper.” This statement is so evocative that I feel I can practically sniff the fragrance. I would really love to own this. Thank you for a delightful review and for a most generous draw. I’m in the USA

  • This fragrance sounds divine, I now need to smell its divinity! I greatly enjoyed the way the reviewer used the perfumers own words to describe what essentially is indescribable. Beautiful review. and even if I am not picked you have sparked an interest in me to find and test this fragrance. Thank you.

  • “I taste and feel a smooth, light, citrus mousse, garnished with geranium, jasmine and orange blossoms. The flowers, the confection, the music all cling to and caress my skin, intimate and enduring.” I think this is a perfect way to describe this fragrance, and comparing it to colors on wet paper from a painter brush is such a visual way to describe this alluring fragrance, Gail crafted a great review. I live in the USA!

  • lilacdays says:

My favourite perfume from Ellena is Ambre Narguile de Hermes. It is a masterpiece!
I’ve been following his creations and definitely, I can’t wait to try out Baliflora.
    I loved this:
“In Laboratorio Olfattivo Baliflora my perception of each olfactory color is like dipping a brush into pigment, touching it to wet paper and watching the color spread out and open up like a blooming flower.”

Many thanks for the draw. I live in France

  • greenhill says:

As a painter I totally get what you mean by diffuse color, and the fragrance being painted like a watercolor. I think all these florals blended like that would be lovely. I live in the USA

  • What intrigues me the most is how this “extravagance” in a JCE style would smell like. I’m eager to try it. Thanks for the review and the draw! I live in EU.

  • Hard work to write about a new creation of JCE. I red here the Michelyn’s interview. The man was already in 2009 a legend. Deep, cult, wise and elegant… The comparison of his creation with an watercolor comes natural. “There are no sharp edges here, no defined lines or stark, startling silhouettes. Diffuse is the word!” Even I didn’t smell Baliflora, I couldn’t agree more with Gail. It can not be any other way.
Thank you for the review and the draw! I live in EU

  • What appeals to me most about this new fragrance Baliflora, is Jean-Claude Ellena. US

  • Joelle Quenneville says:

I would be so curious to discover this perfume, sounds mysterious! Plus I enjoy citrus notes

  • Glenngorea says:

Laboratorio olfactivvo baliflora sounds glorious. I am familiar with Nerosa and after taking a look the masters collection with Jean Claude Ellena is really interesting as I am a big fan. Sounds so beautiful and summery

  • At a loss for words! What a beautiful and enticing review, Gail. My attention was drawn to this “each olfactory color is like dipping a brush into pigment, touching it to wet paper and watching the color spread out and open up like a blooming flower.” This one is going on my wishlist for certain.

  • oh, you had me at “ethereal and otherworldly”. but really, JCE is my new favorite perfumer. or rather, i have recently noticed that i have, love and wear more of ellena’s creations than any other. this is somewhat startling to me, since his style did not used to be my cup of tea — but it has become that. and in fact, today i shall wear vetiver tonka :-). i’m in the us.

  • A perfume that is as soft and ethereal and yet so memorable and transformative as this described by Ms Gross must be quite unique. This is a must try for me. Thank you for the draw! I am in the US.

  • Taryne Aprato says:

This sounds otherworldly-gorgeous! My sweet spot is tropical anything, especially frangipani, orange blossom and lily. When surrounded by the additional luminous floral notes, I’m smitten at its mere description. With master Jean-Claude Ellen’s at the helm, my heart sings with anticipation!

  • Ellena’s style is unique and I would love to experience another pastel floral creation of his, and the lily, jasmine and frangipani sound like a delicious concoction. If i won this, I would like to have it shipped to Romania, EU. Thanks.

  • Awesome review by Gail. Laboratorio Olfattivo Baliflora sounds very beautiful and I do love lilies. A bouquet of lilies and with no sharp edges and ivory colored paper. I live in CA, USA.

  • Bubeto_GG says:

Everybody knows Jean-Claude Ellena is one of the greatest noses ever.
Laboratorio Olfattivo i know because of Alkemi . Nice balsamic semi gourmand with smoky touches. Don’t know why , but i get decent dose of red wine in the base.
Right now i do not time to visit Bali , but i hope i’ll be able to win a bottle of Baliflora .
    Thanks for the draw.
Back and forth between USA and Scotland (UK/EU) 1 week in US
-> 1 week is Scotland, and so on.Basically both USA and EU/UK at the same time.

  • I’m a fan of Ellena classics like Terre d’Hermes and Cartier Declaration, but it’s been years since I’ve sniffed anything new by him. This sounds lovely! Thanks for a chance to win a bottle. I live in Oklahoma, USA.

  • By some odd coincidence went to a big Asian festival yesterday, and there were Bali representatives with dances, food and so on. We were told there are different types of traditional dances, and 3 were demonstrated Kecak , Legong and the one called Barong dance. The fourth picture from top to bottom the dance is called Legong and not Kecak , or at least that’s what we were told.
Tropical floral fragrance with some citruses – sounds good to me , especially when it’s made by a master perfumer like Mr Elena.
    Thanks for the opportunity
USA most of the year, and Germany from time to time

  • I love alot of the notes listed here for this beauty and would absolutely love to try it, I’m in the USA

  • If Gail is lost for words, than this must really be something special! You make Baliflora sound so great that I want to try it immediately.
I love Bali, with all it’s own special smells (even just outside the airport). A perfume that will remind me of this beautiful place, but at the same time is more airy and ‘with less heat’ sounds lovely. I would love the opportunity to win this beauty. Thank you for this chance!
    I live in the Netherlands.

  • I must have Balliflora! I find I’m literally nearly breathless with anticipation. Who could not want to be enveloped in what clearly can only be the magical olfactory equal of paintings by my favorite master impressionist Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida? Joaquin’s paintings glow with ethereal light; with movement, emotional nuance … joy. They vibrate: evoking memory, insight. Sometimes they brush with a gentle caress. At other times they pierce with an insistence demanding you halt in appreciation; always touching the very core of soul of my soul. Likewise Jean Claude Ellena’s ethereal fragrances perpetually resonate with one’s spirit. JCE balances the quintessential essence of each living bloom he’s chosen; one with another, compelling or blending the release of each of their mysteries individually, in combination or opposition, conveying a symphonic dance that strums the chords of one’s soul with genius nuance on every wafting breath! Never failing to bring a smile; moments of pure joy, even mystery. When Gail says Balliflora is beyond words, it can only be so that it is the ultimate expression of all of JCE’s artistic gifts to date — he who has made my life happier every single day — with every note of every ethereal creation of his career— his are the masterpieces that dominate my fragrance wardrobe. I must have Balliflora’s red spider lily intertwined with lotus, white lily ginger, and so much more as a priceless gift to treasure! I am based in the USA.

  • No sharp edges, no defined lines. Baliflora sounds like beautiful harmony. I would love to smell it. Thanks for the review and for the giveaway. In the USA.

  • Sounds beautiful. A bouquet of good energy. First hearing of this House. Thanks for the draw. US

  • Such a pretty description of this fragrance! I love the quote ” In Laboratorio Olfattivo Baliflora my perception of each olfactory color is like dipping a brush into pigment, touching it to wet paper and watching the color spread out and open up like a blooming flower.” And I was impressed you still were able to smell the fragrance on your skin after 12 hours.
    I live in the US.

  • I’ve been to Bali. It is a magical place. AMAZING flowers. This is why I’d like to win this one. Take me back! Frangipani quickly became one of my favorite flowers. USA

  • I love tropical flowers. The smell of the flower markets in Thailand is incredible and I imagine that this perfume has to smell something like this. Additionally the perfumer who is known from his smooth flower compositions. I’d love to try this, even that it can be more on feminine side. Thank you for a draw. I live in Poland.

  • I just love frangipani and add that to Jean Claude Ellena then I am sold. I like daimiris. Lovely USA

  • Michael Prince says:

Gail, great review of Laboratorio Olfattivo Baliflora. Inspired by ingredients Native to Bali like  frangipani, lily, and lotus combined with geranium, citrus, and orange blossom to make an amazing tropical garden experience. I am from the USA.

  • Thank you Gail for an engrossing review. It is always a pleasure to read a review in which the reviewer obviously fell in love with the product and this seems to be just such a fragrance. The facts that the nose behind the fragrance is a giant in the industry as well the fragrance notes also sound intriguing. I’m in TX USA

  • This sounds like a divine floral. I love the painting metaphors – very evocative. I live in the US.

  • Jean Claude Ellena is the man! Terre De Hermes is one of my favorite fragrances, hands down. Anything he a nose in is gold. Would love to try this. Thanks for the draw. NY, US.

  • Such an awesome review, love the poetry. I found this fascinating.. “Laboratorio Olfattivo Baliflora is the scented sound of soft bells or wind chimes resonating together…” I love musk perfumes.
    I live in USA

  • I love orange blossom, and am always looking for beautiful summer scents, since this works for Gail in the PNW, I have high hopes. I liked the image of water colors spreading like a blossom opening, which echoes her previous comment on the water color qualities of Ellena’s perfumer style. Thank you for the draw and the review, in the us.

  • LORI LAWS says:

If Gail has a loss of words to describe Baliflora, it has to be superb! I was in Bali in May and the resort where I stayed gave us lei’s. While reading this review I could smell the flowers that remind me of Bali. The notes are beautiful. Thanks for the giveaway and I live in the US!

  • I like that it lasts so long and it seems like a perfect fragrance for summer with all the solar and exotic flowers in there.

I am from EU. Thank you!

  • Well if Gail Gross claims this to be one of the best perfumes of the year so far I am very intrigued! Geranium, jasmin and orange are also a combination I usually love!

    Living in Germany, EU

  • Usually I prefer woody and spicy fragrances but Gail describes Baliflora so beautifully that maybe it’s time to try something floral. “Scented sound of soft bells or wind chimes resonating together.” Marvelous! Thanks for the draw. I live in the EU.
