Velvet Iris is Essential Parfums latest release composed by master perfumer Dominique Ropion at the helm. As an iris perfume lover, I was very excited to smell Velvet Iris and of course Monsieur Ropion is not doing the expected here, rather he’s taking us on a new sensorial adventure. It’s the second perfume I’ve smelled recently from Dominique Ropion that’s had an unexpected green feel to it. The surprise of Essential Parfums Velvet Iris is a delight and it’s refreshing to smell a perfume that is truly special.

Perfumer Dominique Ropion

Velvet Iris crackles with fresh and green spices as it opens. Pink pepper pops and fizzes in air adding an exciting sensation and is joined by a unique complex array of aromas. That spiced initial spark turns darker, with a bitter sweetness that slips into a cool camphor rootiness with a cool green minty aroma. The pink pepper explosion seems to have ruptured the earth with turmeric leaves, warm spices seeping through dry ground as buchu leaf’s roots push through foreshadowing something that’s blooming below. Velvet Iris has a unusual opening with lots of aromatic herbaceous greens with sharp balsamic almost medicinal aromas that slowly start to soften. The turmeric leaf is stunningly rich, packed with complex yet subtle aromas and gives Velvet Iris a unique presence in its opening stages.

The iris of Velvet Iris reveals itself now. A soft powdery sensation seems to seep out from the turmeric and buchu leaf, its soft and powdery with a crisp fresh rooty greenness. The iris is more part of the atmosphere around this greenness, you can feel stems growing with a rich balsamic for tree sap giving Velvet Iris a warm woody and rich tone packed with aromatics yet handled delicately. Dominique Ropion handles each of these complex materials in a light and elegant way, letting the darkness playing off the light while also giving some of the more raw ugliness of nature, which cleverly makes the beautiful elements of Velvet Iris shine brightly. Galbanum’s greens feel fresh as they shot through the rich earthy ground dripping with fresh sap as more and more powdery iris warms on your skin.

Velvet Iris blossoms with soft, woody, powdery petals humming with an earthy sweetness. It’s dry and stays closer to finely shaved woods giving a seductive sensation of the soft fuzz of velvet. The dry irones conjure this feel, its softer than chalk powder, edging close to silk with a swirl of abstract florals, especially violet but not the Palma sweet kind rather the sensation of the soft petals, with a wink of chocolate that shifts into a rich earthy balsamic resinous subtle sweetness. Velvet Iris feels cloud like here it immerses you it’s this seductive soft sensation of iris flower petals that’s very alluring in the air as you move.

Essential Parfums Velvet Iris wears like a gentle embrace of a lover’s caress, sandalwood’s soft creamy woods feel like naked flesh with a gentle suede nap gliding ever so slowly over it. The IFF Saffiano TM molecule smells like the most luxurious soft leather, you get the richness of the outer side giving Velvet Iris an air of refinement with the texture of the reverse adding that soft and subtle yet very seductive sensation that teases you as your wear it. It’s not overt, but rather as if a gentle touch traced over your skin. Labdanum purrs with a gentle smoky voice in your ear as this suede sensation does its magic. Imagine crushed velvet being moved over your skin by a warm summers breeze and you’re getting close to this delicious sensation with gentle sweet warm woody kisses of mastic interspersed. As you get more intimate with the scent, you can feel little bites of green sink into the sandalwood and leather keeping that green aromatic iris opening fresh in your mind.

An iris scent with heavy green notes that elevate the opening with an intense aromatic herbaceous that soften over time. This is earthy with the addition of the pink pepper and complex in its composition as the star note of iris reveals itself: green, woody and crisp–and in its dry down retains the woody creaminess that is highlighted in the sandalwood milky notes that lingers on the skin. For J this is a unique twist on iris that is rich yet light, perfect for warmer weather–a complex scent that is elegant and refined.

    Hi there,

I loved this review, and recently watched a video about the brand’s efforts and between the two, I learned so much. There’s a simplicity in the packaging, marketing, and approach that levels the playing field for the most prominent scentmasters of our time. So interesting that Velvet Iris plays well in the warm weather, staying close to the skin with creamy sandalwood and other surprises. We could all use a little surprise and refreshment here in NYC! Thank you for focusing on this new offering; I’ve been partial to the Neroli Botanica I recently tried.

    Cheers,

This sounds amazing. I love iris scents and this one sounds unlike any other I’ve experienced. The green opening and the dry down described as “soft creamy woods feel like naked flesh with a gentle suede nap gliding ever so slowly over it” captured my interest and desire to try this beautiful scent.

  • I’m intrigued by the cool and minty camphorous accord in Velvet Iris, which sounds quite unusual when paired with warm and medicinal aromatics. And the green cast of this fragrance gives the iris an unusual framing: “The iris is more part of the atmosphere around this greenness, you can feel stems growing with a rich balsamic for tree sap giving Velvet Iris a warm woody and rich tone packed with aromatics yet handled delicately.” The galbanum seems critical to this effect, but also gives way to a smooth, creamy base. Love all the contrasting elements. I haven’t tried any Essential Parfums fragrances, but Velvet Iris sounds wonderful.

    I’m in the USA.

  • This sounds very pleasing and classy. I’ve enjoyed a lot of Dominique Ropion’s designer scents but haven’t smelled any niche from him so I’m very curious how this smells. Never smelled anythimg from Essential Parfums either. Thanks for the review. USA

  • Combining green notes with iris sounds like win for me. I live in the United States. I don’t know this brand at all, but I do know Ropion, so this sounds very interesting.

  • I had the opportunity to sample this fragrance and I got the same “crushed velvet” comparison that J describes. I can smell the green notes and spices coming through. It’s a beautiful creation and I would be delighted to own a bottle.

Dominique Ropion is one of my favorite Master Perfumer. I must say that if I see his name on any fragrance I will definitely blind buy it. He has not yet failed me. Now Essential Parfums its an amazing perfume house. I have a couple of them in my collection. I dont have this one but if i dont win this bottle best believe i will be buying it.

Velvet Iris captures the velvety touch of the flowers’ petals in a vibrant, caressing, almost tactile trail. A skin-deep velvet that transcends fashion and genre, and invites you to a sensual embrace. I am from EU

  • Ramses Perez says:

Iris fragrances do tend to have a creamy sensation to them so I’m glad Dominic Ropion decided to go the green way on this one. Also, the coconut shavings mentioned by J can attract a more wider audience, and one that loves fruity scents, to try out a new twist to a style most people have smelled. The pink pepper also gives a fresh lift to the scent which makes it so wearable for these summer months. I’m located in the USA.

  • A soft, seductive, and leathery iris combined with a smoky labdanum and a coconut tinged creamy sandalwood by one of my favorite master perfumers, Dominique Ropion? Say less and sign me up. I’m in the USA.

  • I enjoyed J’s vivid and poetic descriptions, especially how he captures the unique green and spicy opening of Velvet Iris and its evolution into a soft, seductive, powdery suede. The imagery of “crushed velvet” and “a lover’s caress” makes the fragrance feel alive and alluring.
I don’t have a favorite Essential Parfums fragrance yet, as I haven’t tried them.

I liked above all when J speaks about the dry down, the creamy Woody feeling with Coconut nuances and the great behavioir on warmer weather.

I am such an iris lover that I could not wait to read this review! And obviously, I was not disappointed!

The green-tinged softness of this fragrance that comes through so clearly in J’s review. The woody drydown is also described as soft and creamy. This fragrance is clearly well-named!

What an extraordinary opportunity from Essential Parfums. The perfumers that have created their fragrances are all such brilliant artisans. I also very much appreciate their attention to sustainability.

I am astonished to note that I have not yet tried anything in their line — and I intend to remedy that problem!

  • “musky powdery woody suede haze” is right up my alley. Thank you J for such a transportive review! I’m a big fan of Essential Parfums, can’t wait to try this one!

  • Really great scent and very well described here in the article. Love these articles at the start of my day.

  • I would love my wife to smell like this iris suede sensation! From the name boring stereotypes kick in, so I’m happy you explained the finesse that Ropion included for us. Please let me wo this to Germany, thank you for the draw!

  • Sounds great. I usually like all the iris based perfumes and this one seems to have a little twist. Also i enjoyed several creations of Dominique Ropion, so would love to try this one. As for a favourite from Essentials, i think i would stick with bois imperial extrait. Thanks for the chance, i’m in the EU.

I simply adore every Dominique Ropion composition, especially when it comes to fresh fragrances. I remember when I wore “geranium pour monsieur”, composed by Ropion for Frederic Malle: apparently a simple minty fragrance, but every day I smelled something different than the day before.
I think that Velvet Iris could be a worthy heir of Geranium pour Monsieur, presenting not the usual buttery/warm iris but a sharp/green/fresh one. I’m really curious about this one.

I haven’t tried any Essential Parfums yet, but Velvet Iris sounds like a great one to start with. J did a great job describing the texture and layers of the fragrance and it really got me curious about how iris can feel both soft and rich at the same time. It sounds like something I’d really enjoy. USA

  • I was intrigued by the “coconut shavings teasing out more of the sandalwood milky notes”. I don’t have a favorite from the house. US

  • Jeffrey F says:

The review is really evocative and being a big fan of iris (and ropion) I’m really keen to try this. I have sampled a few in the range and Neroli, the musc, orange santal ones stand out for me. Based in nyc USA

I like the descpirtion of the combination of vevety feel, greenness, interspersed with gentle suede and soft woods with a hint of labdanum and mastic. I haven’t tried any of the Essential Parfums. I live in the EU.

I haven’t tried anything from Essential Parfums yet, but this piece made me feel like I was already wearing Velvet Iris. The image of “crushed velvet being moved over your skin by a warm summer breeze” gave me goosebumps — you really brought the texture of the scent to life. I loved how you described the pink pepper as “rupturing the earth.” What a way to introduce a perfume. Now I’m seriously curious to smell how Dominique Ropion translated all this green, spice, suede and softness into one bottle.

I’ve been obsessed with Divine Vanille for over a year now — it’s the perfume I reach for when I want to feel comforted but still interesting. Reading your review of Velvet Iris, I can tell there’s a similar attention to detail and texture. That description of the iris “blossoming with soft, woody, powdery petals” and saffiano leather as a caress?? I’m sold. You always make me feel a scent before I even get the chance to try it. Thanks for painting such a rich picture.

I’ve never tried Essential Parfums before but after reading this, I think that’s about to change! I loved the way J talked about the green, spicy opening — it sounds like nothing I’ve smelled before. Also, turmeric leaf?? That alone intrigues me. I also appreciate how J mentions the balance of raw, earthy notes with soft elegance — sounds like it tells a story as it develops. J’s writing always makes me wish I had a scratch-n-sniff screen.

I’ve been devoted to Patchouli Mania for some time — it’s mysterious and rich in all the right ways. But Velvet Iris sounds like a whole new kind of seduction. J’s description of sandalwood feeling like “naked flesh with a gentle suede nap” gave me chills. J always finds a way to describe textures and moods that feel intimate. I can already imagine wearing this on a late summer evening, letting the scent unfold as the air cools.

  • I already adore Divine Vanille — it’s so cozy and addictive — and now J has made Velvet Iris sound like its mysterious, green cousin. I love how J spotlights the unique use of turmeric and buchu leaf. It sounds like Ropion went for something truly daring and original. Also love how J describes the suede effect, that soft caress vibe is right up my alley.
I live in the EU, Germany

  • I’m intrigued by the green / vegetal facet of this fragrance – the camphorous element, as well as the galbanum and pink pepper sound clean, fresh and therapeutic. I feel like iris is such a gorgeous note and often played in a floral, powdery or overly cosmetic approach. But this minty-bitter-medicinal aspect is one I really appreciate and would love to experience.
I am also intrigued by the “buchu leaf”. I am totally unfamiliar with that and will have to do some research!
    Greetings from the EU.

  • mossgreen says:

i am an iris lover too ! the combination of natural elements here sounds like such a thoughtful, intelligent composition. i love how J says this is light and elegant, yet darkness playing with light. i’m in the US.

  • Kensolfactoryodyssey says:

What I loved most about J’s review is the way they captured the texture of Velvet Iris—it felt like I could actually feel the fragrance on my skin through their words. The imagery of suede, velvet petals, crushed woods, and that minty turmeric leaf opening made this sound like a totally unique iris experience. I’m especially intrigued by the use of Saffiano™ and how it adds that refined soft leather element.

My favorite Essential Parfums fragrance so far has been Bois Impérial—it’s just so effortlessly cool and aromatic, but Velvet Iris sounds like it could be my next obsession.

    I live in California, USA.

  • wonderscent.mari says:

J’s review of Velvet Iris instantly captivated me, the way he describes this woody iris unfurls its petals, which are dusted with pink pepper and surround by a crisp fresh rooty greenness, I’ve never smelled anything quite like what’s described here, and that makes me want it even more. A very contemporary and multifaceted iris crafted by master perfumer Dominique Ropion.
I live in the EU and would love the chance to explore this beautiful creation. Thank you for the draw!
Oh forgot to mention..my favorite Essential Parfums fragrances are Divine Vanille & Fig Infusion.

  • Scentofme says:

Dominique Ropion is a well known perfumer and I am interested in trying/winning this new release. I own two scents from this brand – Mon Vetiver and Patchouli Mania – both are outstanding and with an excellent price/quality ratio. I loved this review and am intrigued by the powdery creamy woods, fresh feeling, iris and turmeric accords. From EU.

  • I thoroughly enjoy J’s review it’s almost as if you can smell the fragrance as he is talking about it. From the notes and how they develop to the dry down and everything in between. Make you just want to run out and get a bottle now!

  • Iris is my favorite floral note because of the soft, powdery earthiness it provides to fragrances. Velvet Iris seems to focus on greenery and spices with the rooty, powdery iris softening the sharpness on top of a creamy, woody base. Sounds lovely. I’ve not tried any Essential Parfums before. MD, USA.

  • What I enjoyed most of the review where a few quotes “a perfume that is truly special” and “wears like a gentle embrace of a lover caress”. With a review with quotes like that how could someone not be interested. I am very intrigued by this woody iris fresh scent.I want to leave a beautiful trail as the writer expresses about Velvet Iris. This fragrance sounds intoxicating for the warmer months. I’m interested to test this for myself. I am in Pennsylvania USA

  • Oh my goodness Ropion is the maestro. It’s so hard to create a new Iris at this point but he’s managing to tease out the unexpected and I love what he’s chosen to do that with! Turmeric and Lemtisque. Two favorite rooty earthy almost chewy notes. And Galbanum a cleaner greener juxtaposition. I’m alllll for this! Sign me up!

Love Dominique Ropion creations. I’ll have to try this one to see since some of the reviews are not as flattering, regardless, I trust his work enough to give it a fair shot.
The truth is that sometimes a scent just has to be experienced in person to truly understand it. Enjoyed reading this awesome article, very well written. Commenting from Orlando, Fl. USA.

  • I love it when a floral fragrance has the green elements of stems and leaves as described here. The way Dominique Ropion has also included a touch of the “raw ugliness of nature” to highlight and enhance the beauty of the iris, balsams, and woods sounds really interesting. I am in USA.

  • Shibuichi2000 says:

Velvet Iris sounds like a distinctive composed iris fragrance, and I’m sure Dominique Ropion’s interpretation of it diverges from the typical powdery or floral tropes, blending green spice, herbal bitterness, and suede-like textures. It sounds especially appealing for people (like me) who appreciate earthy, green compositions with a touch of elegance and sensuality. J’s writing is rich (as usual) in metaphor and atmosphere – which works well for describing an abstract medium like scent – and his passion is almost palpable, but it does a great job at painting a strong picture of what Velvet Iris feels like to wear — lush, refined, and subtly seductive.

  • absurdnose says:

I love what Essential Parfums is doing in perfumery. I see them as elevated basic clothing staples are to your wardrobe. I was excited to see this new release. Iris is an iconic favorite and they seem to have paired it with a perfect note list. I would like to slip this on like an elusive perfect white T shirt. It sounds wonderful! I live in the US.

  • I think Velvet Iris might be my new favourite from Essential Parfums lineup. I loved J’s review it perfectly captures the rich journey masterfully conveyed in scent by Dominique Ropion: the green aromatic opening that opens the way for a rooty iris, diffusing into a cloud of abstract flowers and then settling into the gentle caress of velvet. This article perfectly sums it up here “Essential Parfums Velvet Iris wears like a gentle embrace of a lover’s caress, sandalwood’s soft creamy woods feel like naked flesh with a gentle suede nap gliding ever so slowly over it.”
Thank you for the amazing giveaway and the excellent review!
    Greetings from Romania!

  • Nice review Mr.J. Only Mr. Ropion can take the wonderful Iris and do something unexpected, out of the way of so many soft powdery iris focused perfumes. It provides a herbaceous greenness with fresh spices at the opening, mint later and an interesting turmeric leaves. Later apear the soft and leathery iris that seduces us combined with a smoky labdanum and a coconut and creamy sandalwood that lingers for many hours on skin. I live in Spain, EU.

  • Angelika1 says:

Excellent review J! By the review, seems an elegant and intriguing scent, especially for those looking to branch away from mainstream iris fragrances. It seems that this fragrances will be a creative, modern iris interpretations with all the elements that have in it. Very intrigue by the dry down. From USA.

  • I am a big fan of Dominique Ropion
I like that essential Parfums velvet irs makes you feel fresh in the summer

  • patrick_348 says:

I like the idea of an iris that doesn’t give itself away at first, but which emerges after different opening notes. The notes that J lists don’t seem like ones I would automatically put with iris, which makes this sound unusual for me. I find myself wondering if the “Iris Concrete” listed in the notes should be “Iris, Concrete” or if “Iris Concrete” is a specific note (like “musique concrete?). I live in the US in North Carolina and have never tried an Essential Parfums fragrance, but this review makes me want to. And Dominique Ropion is a name to reckon with.

  • foreverscents says:

The turmeric leaf and bucharest leaf notes of Velvet Iris intrigue me. The fizzy pink pepper note right at the opening also interests me. Framing the green notes around the soft and powdery iris note surely makes Iris Velvet a unique creation. The sandalwood and labdanum notes give Velvet Iris a smoky voice. I would love to try this fragrance, as I have not yet tried any Essential Parfums fragrances.
    I live in the USA.

  • I love this just off the name much less what makes it truly exceptional. The title of velvet iris justifying being ever so smooth and holding a stand out rich and radiant ingredient, Iris Concrete. That buttery creamy comfort and that richness that accompanies it is truly unique. I see this being truly alluring and from the pink pepper pop to the labdanum and darker elements. A showstopper is love to behold and belove. From Jacksonville, NC.

  • The thing I enjoyed the most about J’s review was the vivid picture it painted in my mind. I have never tried any Essential Parfums so I don’t have a favorite. I live in the US.

  • As a fan of green earthy fragrances, I’d love to try Velvet Iris. I liked the description of “a bitter sweetness that slips into a cool camphor rootiness.” MI USA
