Nightchild composed by Art and Olfaction Awards 2025 winning perfumer Michael Nordstrand is the second release from Hong Kong based perfume house Epichron. Nightchild leads us down from the rich tea rose mountains of Twin Peaks deep into the woods on a cool dark moonlit night as the magic of the forest wrap us in a stunning smoky green scent.

A chrysanthemum blooms under the gaze of tall trees bathed all in a stark cold moonlight. Menthol vapours rise with a cold earthy spice shining bright and silvery weaving through a soft haze of clary sage warmth. Its gentle warmth feels distant like the presence of someone or something that’s nearby in the trees. The scent of the forest floor rises up with a gentle earthy mossy greenness, it grows up these trees as the aroma of the bark joins it giving you the feeling of being deep amongst the them letting the chrysanthemum feel like a fallen star you have stumbled upon in a small hollow. Cistus and lavender conjure a whisper of animalic fur, think sheep wool and its oily scent lingering on the trees, as animals have brushed past moving through the woods. The lavender gives a purple tint to Nightchild’s cool greens as chrysanthemum’s menthol spice slowly swirls into a sleek sensual incense smoke.

You can feel Nightchild’s resins burn with a slight labdanum char making its cooling smoke rise up and wrap around the trees. Perfumer Michael Nordstrand has composed a stunning forest for this smoky chrysanthemum to bloom in, there’s an array of complex aromas at play making it feel like your there with other elements draw you back to the realm of perfumery. It’s incredibly clever as all the dank, off notes of the woods are lurking here, the Nootka Spruce with its slight acrid crushed green leaves and whisper of mildew gives that wild darkness to the trees while its letting its oily resins give a rich woody smoky green sweetness or the labdanum’s incense resins. The Chinese cedar too adds a gentle smoky camphor darkness while the dry woody facets give a freshness to the trees. Frankincense’s soft citruses appear here, slight lime overtones highlight cypress and fir-like branches while cooler undertones give a body to the incense smoke.

Wearing Nightchild reminds me of Choya loban, a specific Indian extraction of frankincense, it’s a cold smoky charred still smouldering woods incense smoke material, yet Michael Nordstrand has made a forest grow out this darkness Epichron Wildchild suave coolness feel like a cold moonlight giving the subtle floral aspect of the perfume this surreal strangeness of a forest at night. The frankincense co2 extraction really brings out this moonlight feel, it’s like smelling its strange light as the light turns nature surreal green hues. He’s also not afraid of these darker facets, sculpting their cold elegance and letting the rich woods and resins elevate their sleek obsidian beauty.

Quite like the wild animals hidden in the trees you can feel the presence of fire, one off in the distance, its smoke turning the incense a deeper shade of grey. Cade is used deftly here; its smoky charred warmth hugs you gently bringing a gentle mystery to Nightchild’s dry down. More rich earthy aromas grow as patchouli brings an elegance to the forest floor, almost chocolaty nuances weave in with the resins and woody sweetness, as a lovely quiet melody to the more raw forest aromas. It’s all beautifully smoothed out with sandalwood and musks giving a creamy texture and feel to the smoke. As you feel the dark forest recede the chrysanthemum returns, it’s cool spice and herbal greens are shaped by that smooth creamy musky woodiness shaping its petals as their tips dissolve into a meditative incense smoke. Nightchild is like an obsidian black mirror for us to reflect in, letting its dark elegance hypnotize us.

Epichron have again given us something stunning and unique with this exquisite woody incense that’s a lot more than these words convey. A third release is soon on the way too from the wonderful Nathalie Feisthauer taking us in a whole new direction. Epichron is  a house to watch.

This fragrance sounds very interesting.Magical…smoky… woody… green. I would love to try a sample this fall. I live in Maryland USA.

  • Those scent sounds like a perfect transition from summer to fall.
All summer long I chased a perfect green summery scent, but I kept going back to my darker, more wintery scents.
I would love to win or try it to see if it fits the bill as a transition scent.l as it will stay warm till October in Oklahoma where I live.
    Thanks for the giveaways

  • This story sounds very intriguing. Although I’m kind of scared of this fragrance, however I would try a sample, but most likely only spray it on paper or tester strip. I’m trying to be more open and I’m starting with unisex fragrances but this one is one of the most intriguing stories I’ve heard. Scared as I am I will give it a shot/try.

  • I love chrysanthemum and it’s not a common note so it’s so intriguing to see it here. The frankincense sounds beautiful too, the way lavender is used and the warmth of labdanum – I just love labdanum. This sounds so special.
    I am located in California.

  • If M. Night Shyamalan’s movies had a signature fragrance, this would be it. The bottle looks mysterious, the name sounds vaguely ominous, and the first spritz smells like a comforting sandalwood hug until the drydown hits and suddenly you realize the perfume was dead the whole time.

The notes have that classic Shyamalan twist. Opens bright and innocent, then takes a hard left into something brooding and unsettling. One moment you’re thinking “soft amber bedtime story,” the next you’re whispering, “What a twist!”

  • I’m a big fan of Michael Nordstrand (Bad Lily ). I’m a lover of woody incense perfumes. And samples are out of stock at Luckyscent Convergence??? I am fated to win this. Don’t tempt fate Ça Fleur Bon!
    I live in the US.

  • Thanks for the atmospheric review! Nightchild feels like wandering into a moonlit forest where moss, bark, and incense mingle. Chrysanthemum and clary sage bring a cool freshness; there’s smoke from frankincense and labdanum, while Nootka spruce, cade, and woods grow darker beneath it all. I loved how the scent isn’t just dark — it has green, resinous life, with a whisper of animalic fur from wooly textures, and the woods wrapped in soft musks so the smoke doesn’t overwhelm. It strikes me as both haunting and beautifully balanced. I’d love to try Nightchild!
    Cheers from WI, USA

  • I love green mossy fragrances, and the additional notes of menthol and smoky resins in Nightchild sound so interesting. I enjoyed J’s description of the dark forest touched by moonlight evoking the essence of this fragrance. I am in MA.

  • I’m really intrigued by the silvery “menthol vapors” J describes filtering through the woods of Epichron Nightchild. This fragrance is an interesting spin on the outdoor deep-forest scent—a touch feral, a blooming chrysanthemum note, and woven through with cool, camphorous incense. “The frankincense co2 extraction really brings out this moonlight feel, it’s like smelling its strange light as the light turns nature surreal green hues.” This sounds fantastic and like a really compelling wear. I’d love to try this.

    I’m in the USA.

  • Another one with chrysanthemum I’d love to try! And all the woods and labdanum. Oh this sounds truly special. I am going to be so excited if I win!! Thank you for the generous giveaway.
    I’m located in the U.S.

Michael Nordstrand is a perfumer I don’t yet have a handle on, which excites me! And Nightchild sounds like such an interesting witchy forest floor concoction, described so vividly by J. I’d love a chance to sample it. I’m located in VA, USA.

  • rachel wiener says:

Oh this sounds wonderful! Living in a big city, I crave the feeling of being lost in the dark ancient forest. I love how J mentions the off notes and the sheep’s wool in the trees which sounds like they make this fragrance more real and mysterious. I’m super curious about this brand in general. In Brooklyn, NY

  • Not heard of this line, I’d love to test this. I live near the forest, but don’t go often enough. Usa.

  • Kensolfactoryodyssey says:

I’m in the USA and Nightchild instantly sparks my interest with its surreal chrysanthemum-in-the-forest story. The way J describes menthol spice drifting into smoky incense under cold moonlight makes it sound like a living, breathing landscape. I love how it balances eerie greens, resins, and creamy musks—like a walk through a dreamlit forest. This house intrigues me !!

  • Oh, I love anything with woods and moss, so this sounds just lovely. The cool aspect of moonlight reflected in the scent makes me think of dark, cool autumn moves. Ihave little experience with chrysanthemum, and the bloom amid the forest is unique, to me. Thank you for a wonderful review and lovely draw. I’m in the us.

  • These seems very unique and flying with the dampness and energy of the forest with smoky chrysanthemums and dank moss. The resinous nature draws it back in. This fragrance seems to dance between spiritual and physical nature of a forest.

  • foreverscents says:

Nightchild— what a perfect name for a fragrance. This dark and earthy forest of the night is where this child of the earth would love to roam. All these fantastic notes, especially chrysanthemum, cistus, labdanum, and frankincense, draw me deep into these woods.
    I live in the USA.
