EastWest Bottlers Sportsman Review (Caroline de Boutiny) + A Splash of Adventure Draw

EastWestBottlers Sportsman review

I first came across EastWest Bottlers via our CaFleureBon Profiles in American Perfumers Series. Matt Moore, the co-founder, is a bestselling novelist and musician from Georgia who along with his ex-fraternity brothers started EastWest Bottlers, an authentic line of indie fragrances. His first memories of scent are those of his grandfather, a veteran of the Second World War. Matt fondly remembers “Giddy”, getting ready in front of his wooden armoire splashing on colognes such Old Spice. Splash colognes aren’t as popular as they were but they evoke classic fragrances from the past, like Polo and Aramis. Sebastian has reviewed Moonshine Reserve and now Sportsman, the newest in the collection.

EastWest Bottlers Sportsman was developed by perfumer Caroline de Boutiny from Galimard Parfumerie. Galimard is a historic perfumery in Grasse, France, and Mme Boutiny translates her technical skill with raw materials into an authentic American cologne.  The scent is very masculine and feels like you are outdoors; pine and leather are central to the composition but Sportsman is not overpowering and is great for everyday use. -Michelyn Camen, Editor-in-Chief

Enjoyed Sebastian’s profile of who the scent embodies. I imagine a similarity to Polo Green which is a scent I used to wear back in the day except with a modern twist. Curious to experience the flint and red clay accords and like the fact it is versatile, signature-style scent. I prefer spray over splash. Thank you.

  • I enjoyed how Sebastion describe the outdoorsy theme of this fragrance. I would rather spritz but do not mind the occasional splash. Cheers!

  • I enjoy all of Sebastian’s reviews because I learn something new every time – with or without the ball cap! A splash is classic but I feel that too much of the product is wasted on your hands. Always thought the splash looked cool in movies & on TV, but I think the spritz is a better option. The bottle and notes on this take me back to my dad and watching his regimen of getting spiffy before taking my mom out!

  • As a barber I’m instantly drawn to scents like EastWest Bottlers Sportsman . Classy manly , not overbearing fragrance. Who does not like to smell like this in the spring? Fells like a spring fragrance to me.
I much prefer to spray , than to splash .
Thank you for the opportunity. USA

  • I love a fragrance that is straight out masculine. Leather, pine and musk, yes please! (not beastly, LOL) Nice to show the packaging. I like the bottle, classic, simple and a little old world looking, a good green.
I do like a splash. My husband would be wearing it and he does have some splash colognes. It’s reminiscent of our growing up days.
    Nice haircut, Sebastian.

I love a great masculine leather scent with green touches. Flint stone and red clay really make this one sound unique. USA.

  • Agua Brava is what comes to mind after viewing Sebastian’s review. Slightly animalic, signature-worthy and versatile are what I took away from it, which sound interesting. I personally much prefer spritzing, with the exception of Agua Brava which works better as a splash for me. I think Sebastian without the cap is a nice change. Regards from Boston USA.

  • Joseph fragale says:

Absolutely , I have been telling him to remove the cap for a while now.
Sebastian peaked my interest in trying the Sportsman. I am hoping to win this bottle.

  • Ryan Rector says:

I always love Sebastian’s reviews. This one was great and I think I’m leaning more towards the splash however they are both catching my curiosity and I will eventually try both. Thanks for a chance at winning one!!

  • This is an American-style cologne by a French perfume house that is convenient to take on travels. It seems from Sebastian’s review that this cologne is a safer and milder version of American classics like Polo, both in terms of notes and the green bottle. US

  • Great review, Sebastian! Short and to the point as always.

I like the “no hat” look better. I’m not a big fan of splash, but would love to (win) and give this one a try 😛

    Best regards from Plano, TX

  • Sebastian, you look great with or without a cap. First, the outer packaging looks unique. The splash cologne reminds me of 80s. I don’t mind spray or splash as long as I like the fragrance. I love that it is versatile. You can wear indoor/outdoor and all day. Leather and pine neck to neck – Yes pls! Thank you for this giveaway. IL, USA.

  • I appreciate that Sebastian tells the audience who the perfumer is, most reviewers I watch don’t do that. I prefer to spritz, and I do agree that he looks great without the cap. Washington USA

  • Hikmat Sher Afridi says:

Sounds great! Sebastian, you look great without cap. Thanks for the video review of EastWest Bottlers Sportsman that I never heard before. Yes, I love splashing & spritzing colognes and still practicing Old Spice, Knize Ten, 4711 and many more. The notes are appealing & would love to win the bottle by letting my relative address in NY, US.

  • Hi! 🙂 I am all over this! Lol I’d blind buy this on the memories itd invoke and the packaging is awesome! Very old school.. I’d love to have this one in my collection for its appeal and appearance alone… I use a straight razor and the soap cup to shave and its be awesome to have more fragrances like this for the experience. If you’re into the ruggedness of that oldschool way of grooming you kno what I mean… makes me want to strap my razor up and shave and splash on one of my sandal wood fragrances lol

  • i like the idea of a french perfumer designing an american leather & pine cologne. nice bottle & packaging, too. sebastian’s fine cap or no cap. same goes for splash or spritz, though i usually buy a spritz…

  • Fresh and aromatic Leather fragrance with pine? Count me in for this 19th century kind of bottle.
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign.

Great review as always by Sebastian. I love how he describes the fragrance, and he is wonderful with or without a cap! His videos with Dalya are what got me excited about trying new fragrances.

I definitely prefer to spray since I feel like it is less likely to waste the product. Thank you for the draw opportunity. I’m in the USA.

  • IvanVelikov says:

With his review Sebastian brought me back to my childhood, and grandpa wearing splash scents like Dior Eau Sauvage. I’m not sure if it was aftershave, or fragrance in the 80s, but there was no sprayer.
I imagine a fragrance perfectly suitable for office environment.
    Thank you. USA

  • I’ve never used a splash cologne (23yo) but I find the whole process super interesting and more fun opposed to just spraying yourself. And I also think Sebastian look like the Dos Equis man without the hat 🙂

  • Bryant Worley says:

Sebastian looks excellent without the cap, and really doesn’t need it. I like to spritz, as I think its better for keeping track of how much you’re putting on. As far as Sebastian’s review, I liked the research he did into the notes that he didn’t understand, so that a consumer would have an approximation of what he/she would be wearing and smelling. I want the bottle sent to me In Waldorf, Maryland, USA, if I win

  • As we all know everything vintage in popular now , but splashing is really outdated , and sometimes not even healthy. If it’s aftershave , or some big decanter you can split with your friends – sure , but splashing it directly on skin is messy , you’re loosing a lot of juice , and also there are people with allergies on their hands , my cousin for example . And on top of all don’t forget all the guys with beards. Putting too much cologne on your beard , could damage it really bad. I know , because it happen to my husband .
I would suggest Eastwest putting a sprayer in the the box , so customer could choose to splash , or spritz .
I’m glad Sebastian said Sportsman is not super strong scent. Ultra potent leather fragrances even i’m not a fan of , but fresh and green I sure do.
    Thanks a lot.

  • Great review as all ways, I met Sebastian a ScentXplore in NYC, great guy. I started reminiscing on my dads splash colognes after I saw Sebastian’s review. Brought back some good memories. The Idea of bringing back the splash is a unique and good idea.

The new look for Sebastian is good.

  • Edward Slade says:

The components sound like a huge win. Splash has been my favorite and would love to try. Thanks.

  • To me EastWest Bottlers = Southern Living 1966. Such a nice grown up fragrance.
All things Sebastian said in his review about Sportsman are suiting me , except for the splash bottle. Fingers crossed I’ll be the winner, but I’ll instantly put some sort of atomizer on it.
Spray > splash all day, every day.

  • I like when Sebastian points out how fragrances can elicit memories. I too remember my grandfather using a splash type aftershave. But I think I prefer spritzers.

  • I like the idea of a throwback fragrance aimed at men crafted by a woman. I love to dump splash scents down my shoulders in the summer. US

  • I liked how Sebastian described the versatility of the fragrance, how it can be worn in a whole lot of different settings, I also enjoyed his specific description of its intensity. I prefer to spritz, but I don’t mind splashing, I think the baseball cap makes Sebastian look a little bit younger; it distracts from the white in his beard. But he still looks great either way. I am in the US, in NC.

  • I love the old splash bottles. It brings me so many memories, lagerfeld classic, fleurs de tabac cologne and so many others. According to Sebastian’s review, the fragrance sounds masculine but light. And yes, Sebastian looks better without the baseball cap, but that’s his identifying mark according to him.

  • Leather + pine + Sebastian review equals manly fragrance I know my dad would love. The bottle goes straight to him if I win it.
He’s old school kind of guy, and he still uses splash fragrances and aftershaves. Thank you. From USA

  • m.r.everything says:

I always enjoy Sebastian’s reviews… we share similar tastes, and I almost always agree with what he is saying about a fragrance! Your new haircut looks great Sebastian!

EastWest Bottlers has some pretty amazing packaging! I love it… the box… the bag… the bottle…. they all look fantastic! Sportsmen sounds great! I really dig leather fragrances and this one sounds right up my alley. IT sounds old school yet slightly modern…. definitely on my want list! The flint stone and red clay is what really make this one sounds intriguing and has my brain turning!

I generally do not like splash colognes… I feel like I would be using more than I should, wasting some of the precious juice. All of the splash bottles that I have, I have them in atomizers. If I know I am getting a bottle that is in the splash format, I will get a few atomizers off of Amazon and get them ready for when the bottle arrives. (I have a couple back-ups waiting for the next splash bottle after just purchasing Grey Flannel in an 8 oz. splash bottle.)

Thank you Sebastian, for the great review, as always! Thank you to EastWest Bottlers for this generous opportunity and for the fabulous packaging on your fragrances! Thanks, as always, to Michelyn for putting this all together! I live in Delaware, US. Good luck to all!

  • New year new Sebastian! I prefer spritizing but splashing scents/after shaves wasn’t as popular when I was old enough to use cologne. I like the profile Sebastian talked about.
You wake Sunday to run errands. It’s all one outfit for the day, slacks and a shirt. You splash this on and take a walk at the nearby park to clear your head. When you get back you do some yard work and then drive to town to get some groceries for the day and other items. All the while this scent hits you every once in a while as throughout the day

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the great review as usual Sebastian.
Splash Bottle + Red Clay and Flint notes make this a fascinating scent.

    Regards from WI, USA!

  • Since East West Bottlers I just heard, I went to their site, and to my surprise they do sell both fragrances with, and whiteout sprayers. I get the marketing with the throwback, but no sprayer? Sportsman itself sounds nice, I actually like Polo Green and other masculine fragrances, I would not risk putting it directly on my sensitive skin .
I do a lot of splits with friends, and I have at home a lot of generic black bottles and the juice will go in one of these.
    I never splash. USA

  • Thank you Sebastian for the great review and thank you to EastWest for the giveaway.

I first encountered EastWest in an Olfactif monthly pack, and very happy that I did.

I am so happy that Sebastian showed decanting it into a small atomizer as that is something I do all the time.

This sounds like an great scent, love the leather/pine notes, classic and timeless. Maybe this is one that I wouldn’t want to spray, best enjoyed splashed.

    Love the haircut man!

    Tony from metro Boston

  • I enjoy how he showed ease of decantion, but also how wonderful it is to splash with abandon. He covers a bit of everything but not too much of anything…bravo!
IT DEPENDS splash when apropos: Jean Nate, Eau de Cologne Imperiale, RF Kolonya, PPC Bay Rum etc, spray for most everythig else…I am a big fan of the sensual elegance of parfum extrait elixir touche what have you…
HE does look simply smashing. Love the new ‘cut!
Thanks for the generous giveaway if this is on par with Moonshine, A Gentleman’s Cologne that is quite a gift indeed.
    smell swell & be well,
