DSH Perfumes Whiskey + Ginger (Dawn Spencer Hurwitz) 2024+ Heirloom Elixir no.33 Giveaway

DSH Perfumes Whiskey + Ginger

DSH Perfumes Whiskey + Ginger

I’ll eat when I’m hungry, I’ll drink when I’m dry
If the hard times don’t kill me, I’ll lay down and die
Rye whiskey, rye whiskey, rye whiskey I cry
If you don’t give me rye whiskey I surely will die

I’ll tune up me fiddle and rosin my bow
I make myself welcome, wherever I go

Beefsteak when I’m hungry, red booze when I’m dry
Doubloons when I’m hard up and religion when I die

But if I get boozy, my whiskey’s my own
And them that don’t like me, can leave me alone.

Jack o’ Diamonds, Jack o’ Daniels, I know you of old

You robbed me poor pockets of silver and gold. ~ excerpt from a 19th C. North American folk song originally recorded by Tex Ritter in 1933

Award-winning artisanal perfumer Dawn Spencer Hurwitz sent me some samples of her recent compositions this past week. It’s always a delight to work my nose through them – and amongst the lot there was one which immediately caught my eye: a new Heirloom Elixir {no.33} named Whiskey + Ginger. This charming and distinctive perfume was inspired by a 19th century libation traditionally imbibed on Derby-day – the Horse’s Neck highball. The Horse’s Neck originally consisted of a glass of nonalcoholic ginger ale combined with a jigger of bourbon, rye or brandy – and derives its idiosyncratic appellation from the long coiled lemon peel which snakes around the inside of the glass. It is singularly refreshing, especially in the warmer months.

DSH Perfumes Whiskey + Ginger

Readers, you know me by now; my brain dovetailed all the moving parts – the sea chantey-type folk tune, the beverage – both of which are American in origin and were popular within the same time frame. I couldn’t resist. Dawn has an uncanny knack for reconstructing classic drinks which possess an historical context (Le Sazerac, The Absinthe Drinkers, Uptown Moonshine, Lautrec (created for ÇaFleureBon’s first anniversary and rereleased in 2019 as an Heirloom Elixir), and whether they smell nouveau-retro or utterly contemporary, their appeal is timeless. Each of these fragrances is a complex, rich olfactive tapestry, and DSH Perfumes Whiskey + Ginger continues in that tradition. I feel propelled back in time – and the thinly-veiled piratical aspect of my nature is thoroughly gratified. By no means should my personal predilections ‘date’ this particular perfume: if you were to experience Whiskey + Ginger yourselves I believe that its smoky, spicy allure might well reel you in. It IS that good.

As is often the case, few fragrances created by Dawn Spencer Hurwitz could be described as simple – even if they are artlessly compelling and/or resemble a scented second skin. Her aromatic components can appear almost labyrinthine, perhaps daunting at times. I think that it’s helpful to remember that artists such as she have any number of aces up their sleeve; a great deal of time and effort has gone into the creation of original accords which enrich the fragrances they inhabit, and these are drawn upon when they are required for specific effect. This may help clarify such concepts as ‘sugar cube accord’ (think absinthe, for one), suede accord, rye whiskey accord, etc. Some perfumers even eke out a living by selling their own created accords to other perfumers – many of whom happily rely upon them.

Horse's Head Cocktail

Horse’s Neck cocktail wiki By Ralf Roletschek

Whiskey + Ginger happens to be a Horse’s Neck cocktail created with rye whiskey, as opposed to the variants which utilize bourbon or brandy. Rye whiskey was accessible, and from the 1800s on, the whiskey ration was considered a standing policy in the U.S. army. Dawn has rendered it lovable (even if you hadn’t previously liked it) by introducing its raspy-smooth qualities with a surfeit of citruses and a zesty pink peppercorn, all guaranteed to make your mouth water. Aldehydes do what they do best, glimmering and diffusive. The intense tonicity of fresh ginger cleanses the palate, gentled by nearly every part of the orange tree there is: sweet, bigarade, neroli, orange blossom. Rosewater and grandiflorum jasmine provide delicate gentling; they are welcome, if seamless adjuvants; one notices, particularly in the drydown, how gloriously these few florals meld with spice, a soupçon of sugar, tonka, Peru balsam, and the woody floralcy of cabreuva wood. Guaiacwood, as we are aware, is becoming scarcer because of the rigorous sourcing modern tastes demand – but it is quietly dosed in DSH Perfumes Whiskey + Ginger, and as such avoids dominating the fragrance while it imparts its smoky facets without trumpet fanfare. A clove tobacco accord reminds us of Kreteks – those cigarettes/ little cigars which are fragrant (and Bohemian, to those of us who enjoyed them in the 60s and 70s): tailor-made for accompanying glowing musks and ambergris. Whiskey and more whiskey; a stealthy note of suede for good measure. When all is said and done, a balanced and enchanting fragrance awaits the explorer. If it appears gourmand to some, it is an atypical one which will please noses which might have become wearied by very sweet scents: Whiskey + Ginger is very sophisticated and chic, with a somewhat playful mien (And yes. I confess to purchasing a small flacon of it in extrait. Again, not a usual occurrence for me unless I really love a perfume.).

Notes: aldehydes, pink peppercorn, white grapefruit, bergamot, fresh lemon, green mandarin, orange, bitter orange, yuzu, fresh ginger, neroli, orange blossom, rosewater, grandiflorum jasmine, spice notes, sugar cube accord, rye whiskey natural accord, whiskey whiff accord, suede accord,  clove tobacco, cabreuva wood, guaiacwood, musk, ambergris, ciste absolute, Peru balsam, Tonka bean absolute, Virginia cedar

Sample of DSH Perfumes Whiskey + Ginger provided by the perfumer – many thanks! This is something extraordinary. My nose is my own…

  • Ida’s review of DSH Perfumes Whiskey + Ginger captivates me with its vivid imagery and meticulous description of the fragrance’s composition. Her ability to draw parallels between the historical context of the Horse’s Neck cocktail and the perfume’s notes makes the scent come alive in my mind. The intricate blend of citrus, spices, florals, and smoky undertones sounds both refreshing and complex, appealing to my love for unique and sophisticated scents. Additionally, the nostalgic references to sea chanteys and bohemian elements resonate deeply, making me eager to experience this enchanting perfume firsthand.

  • Tou had me at Whiskey. I was today years old learning what Horse’s Neck is, never ever heard of it. This fragrance , in fact the entire house sounds like my style. Definitely checking this house out immediately.

Ida always has the best reviews. I’m drawn in to the story this description tells and can almost taste this fragrance. As someone who is many years sober, I can appreciate a good boozy scent. I live in Oregon.

  • Ramses Perez says:

Wow, this is special. I was reading the notes in disbelief (as there are many, a la Roja or Spirit Of Dubai-style) and couldn’t help thinking is is a summer fragrance that will uplift spirits. Whiskey is part of it for sure but the myriad of citruses is where my attention went right away. This is sparkling, effervescent, joyful. The citruses mixed with the whiskey accord bring about a refreshing aura especially on extremely hot summer days. I can see this one really shining in the high heat. This one also looks like a limited edition so whoever snags a bottle of this, will treasure it. Cheers from the US.

Very nice review, I am fan of Whiskey note. Ida always has the best reviews. I’m drawn in to the story this description tells and can almost taste this fragrance. As someone who is many years sober, I can appreciate a good boozy scent. From PA, USA.

  • Oh my goodness this has me just about drooling. Ginger, citruses and aldehyde, a touch of clove, Peru balsam etc everything sounds just so perfect I would love to win this treasure!! I’ll be praying to the frag spirits! I am in California.
Thank you for the generosity of the give away.

  • You had me at ginger with aldehydes – talk about a zippy combo! I bet the spicy facets of the rye whiskey play quite well with it. Sounds perfect for a summer day gallivanting around town, doing a bit of window shopping, and having a nice lunch outside your favorite pub or bistro. I have yet to try any DSH perfumes, but would be honored to begin my journey with this one. Best of luck to all. I live in NC, USA.

  • The horse’s neck highball sounds like a refreshing drink. Likewise DSH’s Whiskey + Ginger Heirloom Elixer. This sounds like an interesting fragrance. Located in NY.

  • Well, now I have the Irish folk ballad The Moonshiner stuck in my head! I think it was the original version of Rye Whisky posted above! (if the moonshine don’t kill me, I’ll live til I die!”) The amazing talents of DSH always inspire me and since my favorite go-to drink these days is non-alcoholic ginger ale with blended whisky this fragrance sounds exactly like my cup of tea! (or my cup of booze, to be strictly accurate.)

  • ScentofAbsinthe says:

I would love to have a chance to add this whiskey-ginger combination to my collection as my first CaFleurBon win. As a seasoned whiskey drinker, it makes me wonder if this scent will recall a sweeter whiskey like the Irish Tullamore Dew, or something more like Jameson? I hope to find out soon.

  • DSH is a wizard and I am intrigued by the description of these fragrances – whiskey and ginger!
    I am in the US

  • My scent of the day was urban bee keeper also a DSH fragrance. This one sounds amazing as I too enjoy a good ginger ale with maybe a hint of something else! Yum. In Maryland.

  • Belladonna says:

I’ll second the Ohmygoodness! Learned a new word: piratical. Drooled over the libation. Off to order my own extrait. Texas thank you for the opportunity & review

  • Oh wow, this does sound yummy, and I love a good whiskey, myself. Mixed with the orange notes, it sounds irresistible. Thank you for the lovely review, and for the draw. I’m in the us.

  • Kelly Atwood says:

This sounds GLORIOUS, especially as the temps ramp up here in Texas. I’ve fallen in love with cocktail inspired fragrances and would love to be entered into the giveaway, I love Dawn’s creations!

  • I love Dawn’s Le Sazerac and so am dying to try Whiskey and Ginger as well! I love how Ida described all its different complexities and nuances, from the cleansing nature of the ginger to the leather note supporting the whiskey. I’m in MN, USA!

  • Would love to sample this. What a lineup of notes!!! Sounds fantastic. Jasmine, ambergris, neroli, boozy whiskey, citrus. Sounds lavish. April from Minnesota USA.

  • roxhas1cat says:

I must try that cocktail! I am not the biggest fan of whiskey, but the scent inside the rick-house is other worldly. I’ve wanted to have that bottled and maybe “whiskey and more whiskey” will be the one to do that. I am sad to hear guaiac wood is more scarce, one of my favorite wood notes. Noted that Ida purchased this scent, that’s always a good sign. The list of notes is amazing, lots of my favorites there. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • The description reads complex and unique. In real life to me whiskey, lemon and ginger or nice to smell. I would like to try this. US

  • FragranceIsMe says:

First of all, Ida always garners my attention with her articles. I had the pleasure of spending time with Ida for the first time when I was at ScentXplore this past December. Her knowledge of fragrance is remarkable…but her mastery of telling a story is what kept me longing for more, long after we parted ways.
That brings me to this article. I have yet to try a DSW fragrance but Ida’s story and her desire to have and purchase this particular creation, speaks volumes to me about the quality and the artistry of Dawn Spencer Hurwitz. Thank you Ida. Hopefully, I am lucky enough to be picked for this giveaway. This is a fragrance I look forward to experiencing.
Warmest Regards from PA, USA 🙂

  • Thanks for introducing me to the Horse’s Neck cocktail. I’m not a big fan of rye whiskey but the combination of smoky whiskey notes with the bracing spiciness of ginger. The variety of citrus notes and the floral additions seem to mellow out the composition. A very chic gourmand indeed, MD, USA.

  • wallygator88 says:

    THanks for the writeup Ida.

DSH always has super interesting themes. I like her interpretation of a whiskey drink. I can almost smell the fizzy effervescence of the aldehydes.

That clove tobacco accord adds a fascinating touch to the scent.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • DSH Whiskey + Ginger sounds wonderful. I loved the history Ida included of the Kentucky Derby and that rye was used. I am all in for smoky spicy allure.

  • Where to begin with this, very complex with loads of notes. A citrus scent with ginger, suede and whiskey notes sounds like it may be pretty versatile. It gets extremely hot here in TN in the summer, hopefully this one is good for all seasons. Looking forward to more DSH. Thanks for the draw, from USA.

  • “If it appears gourmand to some, it is an atypical one which will please noses which might have become wearied by very sweet scents.”
That’s me! I can’t wear heavy, creamy gourmands as they make me a bit nauseous after a while, but this one sounds like it could be right up my alley. I also love ginger as a note. Thanks for the chance! I’m in the USA.

  • Terrific review with lots of interesting history. Dawn seems to have a lot of fun with the Heirloom Elixir series and {no.33} sounds like a real gem—reminiscent of an earlier era, true to the ingredients of the rye cocktail, boldly aromatic, and totally wearable. I like the way Dawn played up the spicy aspects of the rye with pink pepper, fleshed it out with woods, leather, ambergris, and a bit of tobacco, then used aldehydes to conjure the fizz and mixed it with a range of orange notes to highlight the ginger. There’s so much more going on here than the name would suggest. It sounds like a blast to wear and I’ll seek out a sample.

I’m in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • Whiskey + Ginger in a fragrance…definitely did not think about that but it makes plenty of sense. Especially when I think about the cocktail because I have been to the Derby and had a few. Adding in that guaiac wood and tobacco I just know is a much needed twist that I would love to get my nose on.

    I live in Dallas, TX

  • Ethan Nichols says:

Very interesting. I did not know about the connection of the whiskey ginger to the kentucky derby. But I do love the drink, and I’m quite confident I’d love the fragrance as well. I’m in New Jersey.

  • foreverscents says:

Dawn always creates the most stunning accords! She is a true artist. Even a non-drinker such as I enjoys wearing her fragrances that reconstruct drinks. I am particularly interested in the ginger and citrus notes, as well as the sugar cube accord in Whiskey + Ginger.
    I live in the USA.

  • David Furman says:

Snap, crackle, and pop. This sounds like it has the trifecta just in time for summer. The ingredients are complex but the title states it simply. I imagine this as an aeromatic dry rich citrus. Not too heavy. From Jacksonville, NC
