DSH Perfumes x CaFleureBon Warrior Queen

12 years ago, I pressed publish and the first article was posted, an interview with the great Michel Roudnitksa on Ethical Perfumery. It seems a lifetime ago. Yet with few exceptions we publish an original review or essay each day 365 days a year, a dedicated video each week, thanks to one of the best writing and video team in the fragro-osphere.

It’s as if the world has been frozen underwater not able to break through and allow our true selves to emerge. I felt each of us have the potential to break through the ice and DSH Perfumes Warrior Queen X ÇaFleureBon represents our personal, emotional and political struggles that we combat, with fierce gentleness, to protect ourselves and loved ones.

This is not a “pretty scent” and has both yin and yang elements; neither feminine or masculine. There is a thread of incense that runs through it as in all four bespoke Queens (Red, White, Dark by 4160Tuesdays perfumer Sarah McCartney and Drama Queen by Dawn Spencer Hurwitz). It is most definitely LILY but not what you would expect. and IMHO one of Dawn’s best works as it really is unlike anything this prolific American perfumer has composed.

In Numerology the number 12 is said to mean that you encircle yourself with people who are vibrant and see the best in you; people who do not use you and drag you down. Amen

Thank you, Dawn, for many years of friendship and support. To all the CaFleureBon editors and contributors present and past (there are about 70) and to the olfactive artists who continue to fuel our passion for perfumery, CaFleureBon wouldn’t be the magazine it is today without your extraordinary journalism and dedication.  I am grateful beyond words. To our readers and viewers, thank you for your loyalty. Special shout out to our webmaster Chris!

Happy Birthday Editor Olya Bar

In loving memory of Tama Blough (1/9/2015) and Robert Herrmann (10/1/ 2019) two warriors who we miss dearly and will never forgotten .-Michelyn Camen, Editor-in-Chief

Throughout the past 12 years, it has been a blessing to know many of the CaFleureBon editors and contributors, personally and virtually. I have had a particularly close relationship with Editor-in-Chief Michelyn Camen that dates back to 2008. It seems surreal that another year has passed, still  under the uncertainty of the pandemic.  I’m honored that Michelyn had invited me to create my fourth perfume to celebrate CaFleureBon’s anniversary (I created Lautrec for the first, Become the Shaman for the 7th) and my first “Queen”- Drama Queen).

The inspiration for DSH Perfumes Warrior Queen X CaFleureBon was born out of the shadows to bring light and strength. This year’s Queen has a completely different feeling and personality than the 2019’s Drama Queen, a which was meant to bring a sense of glamor to what had been a very glum and isolated year.

Michelyn let me know that she wanted something powerful (but wearable), and abstract to speak to the sense of intensity that this year has brought. She sent me a quote that hit very deeply for both of us and informed this perfume at each stage of its composition the design: “The strongest people are not those who show strength in front of us but those who win battles we know nothing about”.  Jonathan Harnisch, The Brutal Truth

We all have battles that we wage in our lives; many of us are living with pain, trauma, and hardships that we don’t make public.  And now, as I write this, there is a war raging in Ukraine, brutalizing the people with unbelievable loss and suffering. We all have to be strong to fight the good fight in big and small / public and private ways.  This year we bring you Warrior Queen; an inclusive, fierce, perfume that I hope will help us all find within ourselves.

Warrior Queen waers an ice coated suit of silver armor and is the first impression of the scent. The metallic accord in the opening tells you just how strong you are and, I feel, a sense of protection comes along with it. No one wants to mess around with this Queen!  Inside we find a metallic rose surrounded by hawthorn branches, and a cool lily in the heart.  The base is grounding and made of abstracted earth notes: moss, stones, and wood.

What an exciting collaboration/commission! And it’s a great way to commemorate the creation of the site. This has been my favorite (but actually) blog with its consistent and varied content, its clear and interesting editorial point of view, and its exploration of a finely curated selection of scents. Love the idea of melding chilly metallic notes with flowers and incense. Thanks so much for the draw! I’m in the US.

  • Cafleurebon is the site i visit daily. I value every single reviewer and every single review. I can’t even tell you how many houses and perfumes I’ve discovered on this site and how much time I’ve spent reading the reviews! Just a great site and great company of people altogether!

As for this perfumes, I love DSH perfumes, but this one seems like a complete spectacle, judging by its notes of Aldehydes, Ambergris, Casablanca, Cassie Flower, Frankincense, (Olibanum), Frozen Earth (Accord), Frozen Lily (Accord),Green Oakmoss, Hawthorn Blossom, Lemon, Metal Rose (Accord), Musk, Orris, Plum, Ruh Khus, Silver Armor (Accord), Snowflake (Accord), Sweet Basil, Violet Leaf Absolute, and Wintery Air (Accord). Sound amazing, unique as the site itself! Can’t wait to try it out!

  • Congratulations on 12 wonderful years! I’ve loved coming to your site over the years to be enlightened and entertained about one of my favorite topics–perfume! In a tough time, with such weighty things happening in the world, the idea of wearing a scent called Warrior Queen to gather strength is very appealing. I admire so many of Dawn’s scents and would love to see what this composition is like. Can’t quite imagine it! Thanks for this wonderful opportunity. In th USA

ÇaFleureBon is a daily website for me. I love to hear about new and unusual perfumes, the kind they don’t sell in department stores. I am 3 hours away from the nearest Nordstrom and really appreciate the chance to keep my finger on the pulse of current perfumery- even in my rural town. The website is knowledge and insight and a chance to expand my nose.
The appeal of warrior queen is firstly the notes, secondly the proud heritage of ancient warrior queens around the world- the ones you don’t learn about in school. Also lily is the queen of fragrant flowers to me. I can’t wait until the stargazers bloom in July.
    Western NY state, USA.
Thank you for the draw- I really appreciate the chance to try something new and different. Happy anniversary!

I am intrigued by the notes especially Plum, ruh khus, frozen earth and snowflake accord. Wild guess I think Michelyn is 2023 queen. Happy birthday to Olya Bar. Cafleurebon is the epitome of shedding light on independent houses just a vast plethora of knowledge and discovering new houses. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

I am 2023 queen is Tama Blough. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • Cafleurebon has been a bright spot in my day since the first time I clicked over. Reading the reviews opens my world up, not only by introducing me to new fragrances, but it opens my imagination. The prose is quite masterful. What appeals to me about Warrior Queen is the strength and protection element, and it sounds very interesting! What will the next queen be? Maybe “Queen King”

  • Congratulations on 12 years! I am a new reader of CaFleureBon but have been entranced by the detailed writing and dedication to the field of perfumery. It is a true gift to everyone interested in fragrance. The idea of balancing yin/yang qualities in this perfume speaks to me the most. Best wishes from the US!

  • Cafleurebon has been a great blog/website to learn about new perfumes, perfumers, and the art of perfumery itself. It is my olfactory academy (visited almost daily), kindling my olfactory and other senses, such as visual, with descriptions of far-off places and their olfactory traditions. So thank you and congratulations on your 12th anniversary. Love the notes in DSH Warrior Queen, especially the base notes. Hard to guess the 13th Queen, but with the creativity of DSH and the range of personalities and nuances DSH can bring into her olfactory artwork, I would say/vote for Queen of Sheba to be the 13th Queen!! Thanks for the draw and for everything you all do at Cafleurebon, especially to Michelyn and all the wonderful editors and contributors. Thank you for the draw. Writing from the USA.

Congratulations on your 12th annivrsary! ÇaFleureBon means so much because it is my favorite way to unwind. Reading the beautiful, in-depth reviews of such a wide range of fragrances is just so relaxing and I am beyond grateful that I’ve come across this site. I think everyone on the team, past and present, are absolutely wonderful. I am quite excited about DSH Perfumes Warrior Queen. For starters, it’s DSH. I wouldn’t even need to read the notes to want to get my nose on this one. I think the concept itself is very interesting. I love the interpretation of Warrior Queen, and the artistic direction in the notes. I quite enjoy that metallic feel in fragrances, but I have never smelled a fragrance that pairs that cold feeling with frankincense and these very cold accords. Also, I am so so curious about the snowflake accord. It sounds gorgeous all around. Kind regards from IN, USA. And again, congratulations!

  • Francesca Brice says:

My last story didn’t make it, the one that flowed spontaneously from my heart somehow refused publication in the comment box. I’ve been in hibernation for several months. I was led to this. I felt so moved reading it, the gratitude, love and companionship were what struck me. Thanks you for sharing this, it flowed through to me. Thanks for what you do, these words that go to our hearts. Then the warrior Queen, this woman that lives in all of us. She holds my hand. It reminds me of the movie HER. So special, so generous. Will she become Queen of Peace in 2023? Could we all manage to attain this state? We’ll rise up Dawn to the elements of your perfume alchemy. Thank you. I’m in Aotearoa/New Zealand.

  • Happy Anniversary Michelyn and ÇaFleureBon!

I’m pretty new to this blog; I only got into fragrances recently and a friend pointed me your way. I learn from every review I read here and remain astounded by the range and experiences covered in perfumery today. The giveaways are wonderful too! Thank you for such an interesting, beautifully written resource.

Reading this profile of Warrior Queen, I’m intrigued by the idea of a icy, metallic, silver shroud around a fragrance, which sounds both sharply appealing and a little bit bristly. I’m also curious if this shares any DNA with Hurwitz’ Zoologist Snowy Owl, and more importantly, where it diverges. Sounds like a wonderful composition for this 12th celebration. (And I’ll guess the 13th Queen will be named Auspicious Queen, shrugging off any fears of bad luck, ill portents, and whatever else 2022 has in store.)

    I’m in the Midwest, USA.

  • ÇaFleureBon means amazing fragrance to me, the fantastic notes and uniqueness of the fragrance appeals to me, I live in Poland, EU, my guess: Lily

  • GennyLeigh says:

Congratulations Michelyn and contributors. What an accomplishment! DSH is the perfect choice to help celebrate. Warrior Queen with its metallic rose and cool lily is a wonderful tribute to 12 years of perfume exploration. MD, USA.

  • The frozen lily note is quite intriguing, and I deeply thank Michelyn, Dawn, and all of the teams that have built CaFleureBon to what it is now. I am a relatively new member of the community, but I have grown enamored with the beautiful community that has been developed over these past 12 years.

    From USA.

  • Dubaiscents says:

Happy 12th Anniversary Cafleurebon! It truly amazes me what Michelyn and the team are able to do every single day – bring the world a little joy through perfume! Warrior Queen is just what we need to survive these wild times and I adore Alex’s crown! Any scent by the masterful Dawn is worth smelling and I can’t wait to try this one! Congratulations Cafleurebon!

  • Love the reviews that have helped me find new fragrances and learn more about old ones I already own. I love Dawn’s use of natural ingredients and her sensitivity toward vintages. Aldehydes, florals and myrrh had me. I’m in Ohio.

  • What a perfect name. We all need to bring out our warrier personas to power through these times I’d love to try it. CaFleerBon has helped me travel away from reality a bit over the past couple of years while staying grounded at the same time. NC USA (Victorious Queen)

  • Happy birthday Çafleurbon! Up to more fragrant years. Since discovering Çafleurbon because I picked up a bottle of Red Queen, i read the blog regularly and get inspiration for the discovery of new perfumes. I love the positivity of the reviews and the great selection of contributors who all bring something different to the table.

I love the sound of this empowering perfume. I’m really interested in the frozen lily and silver armour accords. I’m sure this will be another stunning Queen. Perhaps Queen 13 will be Beauty Queen?

    Marit UK

  • Congratulations on 12 years! And thank you for all that you do. My friends and family do not share my love of fragrances, so CaFleurBon has filled that space- reminding me that there are others who love and appreciate perfume, and providing another perspective from my own. Warrior Queen sounds like an amazing blend of florals and thorns! And the name alone won my heart. I guess the 2023 perfume will be called Dancing Queen. Writing from the EU.

  • Happy anniversary to all the great people at ÇaFleureBon. I have a strong sense of gratitude for everything that ÇaFleureBon means. Many times it helped me escape some grey moments and all the imagined experiences enriched my life. Not the mention the information about this wonderful world of perfumes.
DSH Perfumes Warrior Queen captures very well the essence of this times.
Perhaps next year’s Queen will be Lucky
    Hugs from Romania

  • Big congratulations to this amazing team!
ÇaFleureBon is my mainly source of information on fragrances and I use it everyday. I enjoy so much reading about new fragrances every night when I get from work.
DSH Perfumes Warrior Queen seems so much interesting, specially for the performance and the versatility.
    I live in the USA.
My guess on the Queen is Tuberose Queen.

  • Claumarchini says:

Happy birthday Cafleurebon! I started following you in 2020, when I began my journey into niche perfumery (before then, I liked perfume but used to stick to designer’s) and I have never stopped reading your articles. They are a continue source of information, culture, history, and for somebody who is not as trained and is avid to know more and more, having a new article each day is really amazing. Not to speak about the giveaways, a true and extremely generous present to all of us readers. Warrior Queen looks really interesting and particular, the metallic note and the cold iris intrigue me very much. Here’s to many many more years!!! Greetings from Italy

  • I appreciate Cafleurebon for multiple reasons, e.g. I appreciate discovering many different fragrances and fragrance houses, I appreciate learning more about perfumery and perfumery history, and more.

I want to try this fragrance: I am very interested in it because of its list of notes. I would like to try DSH’s collected fragrance works, but I haven’t tried even one yet. I live in the U.S.A.

Congrats to all involved on the 12th anniversary of CaFleureBon! You guys are making so many people’s lives happier and more beautiful. CaFleureBon to me is like a bottomless well of wisdom, kindness, grace and class. I am blessed to be part of the community of the readers here, and eternally grateful to all the editors and contributors for being able to read about their deep, artsy, unique and so meaningful insights into masterpieces that niche perfumes are. It is like a living encyclopedia of the absolute creme de la creme. I love the notes of Warrior Queen, very representative of the shells we were forced to build around ourselves over the past 2 years and, with the unstable situation in Europe, it looks like we might need them for another while… My guess for the 13th Queen would be Blissful Queen? Let’s do some white magic to bring this planet more love, peace and happiness. I am based in Dublin, Ireland, EU

  • Congratulations for the ÇaFleureBon 12th Anniversary!
I love ÇaFleureBon, it is the door that has opened me to the wonderful world of perfumery, it has transported me to incredible aromas through its articles.
As for DSH Warrior Queen, it sounds majestuous, I am very intrigued by some of its notes and would love to wear it.
Happy Anniversary!, with love, from Mexico.

  • CafleureBon is crucial to me because you expose me to brands, fragrances and perfumers that I would usually not be exposed to you. Warrior Queen sounds like a very unique fragrance with metallic notes and other notes that makes it different.

    Thanks for the great writeup.

CFB has been my perfume education for the last two years. It’s something I try to read daily. I’m constantly amazed by the artistic ability of the writers here to convert a scent into words and portrey the scene and the interntion in the perfumers mind.

I think what appeals to me the most about this line is the relationship DSH has had with CFB and Michelyn. It’s absolutely wonderful to see this line year after year.

I’m going to guess Benevolent Queen

    Cheers from WI, USA

Happy anniversary! ÇaFleureBon has meant to me a place to satisfy my intellectual curiosity about fragrance, reading reviews about so many more fragrances than I ever have the chance to sample. I love the insight I can find into the minds of the perfumers and their creative process. And of course I also very much appreciate the giveaways!

What appeals to me about DSH Perfumes Warrior Queen for ÇaFleureBon is it’s strength and intensity, with the ice-coated metallic accord surrounding a strong, fierce rose adorned with thorns and branches and a cool, elegant lily. These notes are very appealing to me and I particularly love a fragrance that embodies strength and perseverance. I live in the US. I would guess that the name of the 13th queen is the Peaceful Queen!
