DSH Perfumes Muresque Review (Heirloom Elixirs #14) Dawn Spencer Hurwitz+ Once Upon a Time Draw

DSH PERFUMES MURESQUE

DSH Perfumes Muresque Heirloom Elixirs #14 @dshperfumes

Once upon a time, long long ago when men and beasts trod the earth as kin – there dwelt a young maiden in a vast Forest Primaeval by her wee lone. As it often happened in those times, her blessed mother passed during childbirth and her father, a wealthy landowner – remarried in haste, only to repent in leisure. His new wife made it plain that she would not abide being second best; he was ensorcelled by the glamour in which she veiled herself and her true intentions, and began to neglect his beloved daughter.

In Bloom by Gina Litherland ©

For Nuala (that was the child’s name, from the Gaelic meaning “white shoulder”) life became intolerable and she retreated to the woods, where she found herself safe and amply sheltered. Nuala soon discovered that she possessed a gift which was to alter her life: an ability to understand the innumerable languages spoken by flora and fauna. And so the forest became her domain; the vixen and she-wolf, her familiars. It fell to her lot that, through their tender ministrations – she became known far and wide for her abilities as a healer. Follow her through the woods, past the brambles which bite and catch. Her step is sure; she traverses these environs in her sleep. It is the very cusp between autumn and winter: fallen leaves coat the forest floor, silvered with frost – but Nuala treads noiselessly in bare feet, oblivious to the cold. She forages for what remains, for she has already put aside a sylvan harvest’s bounty to see her through the winter. Nuts, berries, roots, herbs, mosses, bark – each preserved, dried, judiciously stored in loving order for libation, sustenance, enchantment. All that surrounds her is fragrant as the season – and Nuala herself, likewise.

Dawn Spencer Hurwitz of DSh Perfumes

Dawn Spencer Hurwitz

It must be that award-winning artisanal perfumer Dawn Spencer Hurwitz created an elixir for her alone, sporting the fairytale appellation Muresque: that which resembles the blackberry. All the riches of legend are contained within a single drop:  the violet red of the grape from which water of life is distilled (eau de vie), intensely hued berries that stain the lips so sweetly, their brambles which scratch the flesh and tug at the hem of her cloak. The juicy tartness of black currant, gentled by benevolent wood violets – bestows a beetroot-like hue reflected in fragrance as an olfactory mirror image. Dawn accords her the bergamot of high summer and whispers of sultry roses and indolic jasmine from that gilded season; aldehydes portend the chillier one to come.

Best DSH perfumes

Wolf Alice (For Angela Carter) by Gina Litherland©

The present is ensconced in moss and wood, loamy elements (patchouli) and pelts of Nuala’s companion creatures – reassuringly warm, leathery and musky, they attend her every footfall. Muresque is a woodland cordial, composed of diametrically opposite materials wedded to one another seamlessly, as if with spider-silk. It is aromatic innocence teetering on the precipice of decay, unselfconsciously sophisticated. Dawn has given us beauty, beasts and that which falls between the two in good faith, a talismanic safeguard. It is the odor which emanates from the Wood Guardian, Nuala – from the tips of her tresses, her fingers and toes – caught up in the rhythm of the seasons.

Notes: aldehydes, bergamot, blackberry, blackberry leaves and flowers, Pinot Noir accord, cassis bud, Bulgarian rose absolute, damask rose absolute, grandiflorum jasmine, orris, violet, wood violet, ambrette, Atlas cedarwood, Australian sandalwood, East Indian patchouli, balsam fir, green oakmoss, labdanum, musk

Flacon generously provided by the perfumer – I love it. Many thanks!  My nose is my own…

~Ida Meister, Senior and Natural Perfumery Editor

Editor’s Note: Dawn revisited a theme from a perfume she composed in 1999, when there wasn’t the wealth of materials that are now available to independent perfumers. We are glad she did.

Dawn creates some of the best earthy, woodsy scents and this one sounds like another unique take on the theme. I love the story of Nuala, the Guardian Nymph and the choice of artwork adds a lovely touch to the review. I would love to try this one. Thank you for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • Dawn’s creativity is never asleep. I enjoy many of her unique scents, especially those with incense. I liked the imagery and description of Muresque. The Pinot Noir accord has me very interested. Thanks for another great article and generous draw! Mich USA

  • I see blackberry as the king note on this creation, but I’m intrigued by the Pinot noir accord, my favorite wine varietal. All the composition sounds nice, like a dark chypre and I would love to try it. Regards from Mexico!

  • Loved the imagery created by Ida in this review of Muresque by DSH. Also, the clear description of notes and connection with the story of Noula made this review a fun read. So many beautiful notes. Unfortunately, I haven’t had a chance to try DSH perfumes, yet. Thanks for the review and the draw. Writing from the USA.

  • I’ve recently fallen for Chpre fragrances. I’ve not seen any wine notes in a chypre before. I’d love to go pick blackberries in this forest! I need to investigate Dawn’s other forest/green scents. I’ve heard she does them well. I am not familiar with her fragrances, but I need to get my hands on some samples. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • Ah, the evil stepmother inadvertently empowering our heroine! Muresque sounds lovely. I particularly like the description of the fragrance as a woodland cordial. There’s a lot of woody and fruit notes (pinot noir accord!) but the floral notes, especially the orris and violet intrigue me the most. Commenting from MD, USA.

  • I am very interested in trying this fragrance. I want to try a fragrance that is made by perfumer, Dawn Spencer Hurwitz. I’m interested to see what the berry notes in this are like. I can enjoy chypres very much. Judging by the review, and the list of notes, this fragrance definitely seems like something that I can enjoy. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • What an enchanting story. There’s something very similar to this myth in the book I’m reading (Hamnet). And this is a chypre, and the notes sound gorgeous, and I noticed it in your year-end Top 10 list…
    I live in the USA.

  • What appealed to me about Ida’s review is just much this fragrance is influenced by nature which I find really nice because I like scents that resemble something that I could potentially smell in the wild. I live in Florida, US.

  • BostonScentGuy says:

I loved the story that Ida attached to this review–it was evocative of the fantastical inspiration for this scent. I love the idea of aromatic innocence “teetering on the precipice of decay.” Dawn does earthy/woody/fruity so well and in a balanced way. Thanks so much for the generous draw! I’m in the US.

  • chatoncharmant says:

Never can resist an enchanted woodland narrative when used as an allegorical device for fragrance! I want to smell like a dryad/Snow White/grandmother willow and I’m not ashamed! Chypres don’t always work for me, but I’m not ready to give up and I’ve been piqued to DSH for a minute now, not least after seeing this in the year end countdown. Also a total sucker for scents that “teeter on the edge of decay” and push that boundary between friend and foe. Something needs to have that nearly nasty je ne sais quoi to really draw one in, methinks. Fingers crossed for this one and thanks very much to Dawn and Ida for the opportunity to dip my toes in this house. Writing from WI USA.

  • Juan_hernan says:

From Ida’s review, what really appealed to me about the fragrance was how it was described through the walk through the forest in the introduction. I thought that by describing the fragrance in that way, it was both very captivating and very appealing. I live in the US.

  • It seems that Dawn Spencer Hurwitz has done it again. ” Dawn has given us beauty, beasts and that which falls between the two in good faith, a talismanic safeguard.” How could anyone resist that. Many thanks to Ida for another of her superlative reviews and many thanks to Dawn Spencer Hurwitz for making this draw possible. I’m in the USA

  • Beautiful story and pictures! I hope to sniff the scent while imagining the language of fauna and flora. (US)

  • The review had me at :Dawn Spencer Hurwitz who I’ve followed since almost the dawn of the internet met my passion for scent. Next is the beautiful writing of the review itself which is lyrical and frames the magic of this new scent in a riveting way. Of course, once I saw notes of Blackberry and Blackberry Leaves I was all in or was it the beauty/beast references that did it? Thanks for this contest and happy new year.

  • WHAT A COOL REVIEW! I have never read one like it. This makes me want to put on a fluffy skirt and corset, and run barefoot through the wild! From USA 🙂

  • Very evocative review! I got interested in this because of the berry note. I have never tried anything from this brand before, actually. From Finland.

  • Mary Stephens Mitchell says:

I’m officially ensorcelled by Ida’s review. Thank you for the opportunity to enter the drawing!

  • I am very drawn to woodland scents and always baby DSH Perfumes and this sounds amazing. I enjoyed the story of Nuala and would deeply enjoy a “woodland cordial” I am in U.K.

  • Julie Lease says:

I’m once again floored by the review and what these words evoke in my soul. I love everything I’ve ever tried by DSH (and am totally smitten with many of them…) I wear her delightful Une Robe De Zibeline 4-5 days a week…. the perfume in this review sounds like nothing I currently own, or wear, but intuition tells me Id love it just as I do all of her perfumes!
Thank you so much for the very generous offer, the gorgeous art work and review!
    I’m in the US

  • What is not to love about this scent: moss and wood, loamy elements (patchouli) and pelts of Nuala’s companion creatures – reassuringly warm, leathery and musky, it is all right up my alley and I would definitely love to try this perfume. It sounds like a lovely creation!
    Living in the EU

  • Love this dark fairy tale and the appropriately dreamy art. Love chypres and the blackberry and pinot noir elements make this additionally intriguing.

  • Ida does not write »usual« reviews, she writes incredibly heartwarming and captivating love stories dedicated to the perfumes. Judging by her words, which I trust :), Muresque is an intriguing fragrance, a composition of contrasting notes that are blended seamlessly, the incarnation of a forest in a flacon. The list of notes is impressive, too. Some of my favorites and some that I have never knowingly experienced in fragrances. It would be a great delight to win »Dawn’s forest in a bottle«. Many thanks to Dawn Spencer Hurwitz for sharing her creativity and making this draw possible. I live in the EU.

  • What a lovely fragrance and article to start the year with.
Ida skillfully and artistically described this fragrance, and the introduction about Nuala’s myth was utterly inspiring.
Muresque itself sounds just as wild, yet welcoming as Nuala – a child of nature, able to provide all the comfort and gentleness. The notes range from tart and astringent to deep and earthy, promising a very balanced composition.
I am in Europe; thanks for a wonderful draw!

  • Iuno Feronia says:

Thanks for the draw, I wann to have this ability as well. Dawn is a wonderful perfumer, I live in the EU.

  • This Christmas, I received 11 different samples by DSH perfumes from my husband and immediately fell in love with Dawn’s work. The idea of the warm, furry companion who attends to Nuala appeals to my imagination and makes me curious about what that warmth does to blackberry, which I always find to be a bit sharp. I love the images in this review–so evocative and specific. I’m located in the US.

  • I love the story that Ida writes about Nuala, the forest nymph and her descriptions of the forest and all she forages. Dawn being the artist she is to make a fragrance like Muresque and all of it’s lovely fruits and greens. Thank you for the chance to win. USA

  • Claumarchini says:

I loved the story of Nuala, and how Ida has beautifully linked to what feels like a great fragrance! The notes sound amazing… I have never tried anything from Dawn Spencer Hurwitz, but I am really keen to start, by reading your amazing reviews! Thanks for the great opportunity!
    I live in Milan, Italy

  • A lovely fairytale to accompany this perfume. Ida’s storytelling, description and images are beautifully descriptive and Muresque sounds like a harmonious forest potion which I would love to try. I have yet to try a perfume from Dawn Spencer Hurwitz whom I have read so many wonderful things about. It will be a resolution for 2021. Marit UK

  • patrick_348 says:

I like how Ida has described the fragrance as centered around blackberry, but supported by floral, mossy and woodsy notes. And I love the accompanying illustration of Wolf Alice (as someone who thinkg THE COMPANY OF WOLVES, from a story by Angela Carter, is one of the great unrecognized movies of its time.) I can imagine the scent of Muresque going with that picture perfectly. I live in the US, in North Carolina.

  • I am a big fan of Dawn Spencer Hurwitz’s work – her perfumes are well crafted and interesting.
The blackberry and Pinot Noir accord ( yum) intrigue me greatly, and I would love to try it. Thanks to you and the perfumer for the draw.
    I live in Canada

  • Something from Ida’s review that caught my attention was the description of nature and its furry companions. Anytime a fragrance by Dawn Spencer Hurwitz is mentioned, I always become interested. Her fragrances are always different from all other fragrances I have tried from other brands. I live in Florida, US.

  • Whispers of sultry roses and the use of aldehydes sound very intriguing. Then there is oakmoss – one of my most favourite ingredients! Thank you Ida. (BD/UK)

  • This is just a fairytale in a bottle…it sounds heavenly. The notes and the story work so great together, and they sound just like the name states: an elixir. This is one fragrance I’m sure I will try to find. I currently live in Romania.

  • Dawn is the 2020 hardest working person in perfume as ÇafleureBon recognized days ago… T

This DSH sounds like an amazing fruit, woods, and mossy blend. I’d love to try it. New Jersey USA

  • The idea of a sylvan spirit wrapped in a blackberry chypre sounds like a marvel. I love the endearment Ida has for DSH’s perfumes, and I’d love to share it, too.
    Russia

  • Dawn is a fabulous perfumer. I have a sampler set, and a bottle of Soft Musk that I experiment with layering all of the time. Everything about Ida’s review appeals to me. I’ve been reading a lot about two aesthetics lately: cottagecore and dark academia. This review combines the best of both and Muresque sounds like exactly what I have been looking for. I am in the U.S.

  • wandering_nose says:

Ida’d review reads like a magical fairytale, transmitting the reader to deep woods full of mystery and surprise. I loved the legend of Nuala. A bit like Alice in Wonderland, however much more closely connected to mother nature. I have been into woody fragrances recently so this one really has me hooked! Thank you from Ireland

  • I enjoyed the fairy tale-like review of a creation that seems very woodsy and intriguing. I am drawn to the blackberry notes and Pinot Noir accord, and I’d love to see how these blend with the floral heart and earthier notes. I’m always happy to see DSH’s creations and definitely always interested in the heirloom collection. I am in the USA.

  • pimpompompam says:

What I like about the review, it is a form of it – fairy tale about the fragrance. Interesting approach.

  • The art used in this review is so evocative of a lush fairytale forest. Mystical yet dark. Hello from New England 🙂

  • Michael Prince says:

Ida had a beautiful and detailed review of DSH Perfumes Muresque (Heirloom Elixir no.14). It sounds like a very unique chypre creation with the blackberry and Pinot Noir accord. I would love the opportunity to try this creation. I am from Ohio, USA.

  • wallygator88 says:

Thank you for the beautiful review Ida.

I love the idea behind the scent. Chypres are my favourite category and the idea of a juicy jammy chypre, especially in this frigid WI winter.

I love the story that this review weaves – nymphs, vast forests, damp soil, quiet whispers of mythology in the leaves and the beauty of strength.

I do follow DSH a lot, but I’ve not had the chance to smell her fragrances yet.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Wow, thank you Ida for the imagery and Muresque sounds amazing and a fragrance that Nuala would wear 🙂 I’m intrigued by the inclusion of the wine accord to complete the fruity picture. I’m in USA

  • constancesuze says:

Some beautiful imagery in this review, thank you, Ida! I’ve always been interested in folklore, legends, and fairytales- and their interpretations.
Always happy to read something that scratches that itch. And Dawn has been one of my favorite perfumers for years, there’s always something interesting coming from her. Would love to be entered.

  • The idea of all the elements of the forest: the berries, the woods, and even magical creatures all in one fragrance is an appealing idea. Dawn seems to have an endless well of creativity. I live in the USA.

  • doveskylark says:

I enjoyed reading about Nuala and the Forest Primaeval. I have always want dip spend time in a forest, learning the language of flora and fauna. The mossy and loamy ad blackberry notes indeed sound like they would emanate from the woods. Dawn is such a generous talent. I admire her creative spirit immensely.
    I live in the USA.

  • I liked the imagery and description of notes, this fragrance sounds like a walk through an enchanted forest. I live in Florida

  • I love the stories and pictures in this article. I am earger to experience the power of the forest and the beauty of nature like Nuala.
Usually, I don’t like the synthetic berry notes in general perfumes, but loved to eat blackberry so much, so I’ve always been looking for a grown-up, intoxicating and vivid fruity scent, if it is a chypre with woods and moss as the background, it must be great!
I live in Taiwan. Thank you.

  • This sounds like the perfect scent for a summer solstice. The beauty of nature captured in a bottle just waiting to reveal herself to the chosen few
