DSH Perfumes Essenza dell’Ibisco (Heirloom 1) 2018 + Profumo Voluttuoso Draw

Independent perfumer artist Dawn Spencer Hurwitz’s fertile imagination never lies dormant – there’s always something new sequestered up her scented sleeve. These days one of her pet projects is the new Heirloom Elixir Collection – a collaboration with Editor-in-Chief Michelyn Camen, who planted and watered this seed: what if some of Dawn’s prolific but currently unavailable fragrant beauties were to be showcased at regular intervals?

And then – once you’d purchased it – you would have access to it whenever you wished? I think it’s a brilliant concept and was tickled pink when the first foray was sent (from Dawn’s Italian Journey in 2006, now Heirloom 1) – DSH Perfumes Essenza dell’Ibisco – Essence of Hibiscus. I remember the Italian Journey series fondly and this perfume in particular; to me, it will always be Il Profumo Voluttuoso – as gloriously rounded, plush and envoûtant as Monica Bellucci’s curvaceous silhouette-made-scent.

Bosomy Floriental? This might be as fine a place to begin as any. When you are effulgently floral, employing exquisitely spicy tuberose, rapturous French orange blossom and swoony jasmine – why wouldn’t you partner them with succulent fleshy fruit tones? A little mandarin, bergamot and neroli for zest? Apricot, peach and juicy plum for ripeness? The complex loveliness of rare boronia: herbal, tealike, floral/fruit? The delicacy of rose is an instinctual counterpart with her fluid ability to harmonize effortlessly…

Ah, but the base! We want for nothing as all the stops have been pulled out for us, a seraglio of precious resins (myrrh, ciste labdanum) laced with sandalwood, musky ambrette and ambergris like a designer drug. The entire composition makes one dizzy, it all goes to your head and fills your nostrils greedily like too much grappa. Is DSH Perfumes Essenza dell’Ibisco a controlled substance? Ought it to be?

I feel it as one of the consummate femme-fleur perfumes, an awakening of the senses via intentional aromatic overabundance. Its lavish, extravagant curves and unbridled sensuality unmask our deeper nature. DSH Perfumes Essenza dell’Ibisco 2018 is openly generous and easy to love as it laughingly overflows its black lace balconnet-pigéonnant, unselfconscious and radiantly déshabillée.

I like when woman mostly wear feminine perfumes, not masculine which sometimes does some women.

  • I am so glad for Michelyn and Dawn! The fact she brought Essenza dell’Ibise back makes this come back super cool because I’ve actually never tried it and it would be such a great opportunity to do that. Dawn’s tuberose is quite daring but at the same time so pure… I would love to try more of her perfumes built around tuberose. Plum is also one of my favorite notes. Hopefully it will make me feel as sexy Monica Bellucci looksGermany, I reeeeeally want to win

  • I am sure that two talented women – Michelyn and Dawn has created very beautiful and feminine fragrance. And the connection of between perfume and beautiful Monica Belucci is intrigued me.
“Its lavish, extravagant curves and unbridled sensuality unmask our deeper nature”- sounds very beautiful.

  • This fragrance sounds deep and sensual. All of the notes are favorites of mine. I’ve tried many of DSH perfumes, and look forward to sniffing this new creation. USA

  • I’ve never tried anything from the DSH fragrance house before so I’m not sure which I’d want to see return as an elixir. But this one sounds so incredibly beautiful. A gorgeous combination of so many florals along with all those juicy fruit notes!
    I live in the US.

  • Another swoony review by the Meister of reviews. This sounds amazing. I’ve tried a number of DSH fragrances and liked all of them. This definitely is another to try. Monica Bellucci is such a gorgeously sexy woman . If only…I’m in the US

The musky ambrette sounds so sensual in this fragrance. I am new to DSH fragrances, but I’ve been enjoying Lilas de Minuit immensely. It really is like a controlled (or uncontrolled!) substance.
    I live in the USA.

  • Ooooh. Those notes! What a review! My favorite part.

  • I love this concept and am glad Michelyn planted and watered the seed for this idea! Its so wonderful to get a discontinued fragrance as much as you want after it has been discontiuned, its like your the only one in on a wonderful secret! I love the description of this scent and its conparison to the sensuality of a beautiful woman! I live in the USA.

“Is DSH Perfumes Essenza dell’Ibisco a controlled substance? Ought it to be?” A good question! Not many perfumes fall into that category, but the ones that do are truly dangerous. The notes of this sound so lush, so perfect together. Thank you for telling us about it, and for the very generous draw! I’m in the USA.

  • Monica Beaton says:

Bosomy Floriental – yes please! And I too much prefer the 52 year old Monica Bellucci. This is a wonderful project you two ladies are working on. As much as I love and hold onto favourite fragrances, I like to look forward and see – and smell – what’s coming next. I live in Australia

  • Jasmine to make me swoon, an entire composition to make me dizzy! Doesn’t sound better than that! Monica is an inspiration, nice to live in a time when women past the age of 50 aren’t cast aside, but still vibrant and gorgeous. I’m not familiar with this line…..yet, but would love to see Dawn bring back a blockbuster gourmand! Thanks for the chance. Great read Ida! USA.

  • Essenza dell’Ibisco is as glorious as you say. Love your visual reviews Ida – doesn’t even require the beautiful pictures- I can “see” what you write. Fortunate to already enjoy this, please omit me from the drawing and good fortune to all entrants.

  • I live in Australia and at 54 am inspired by the beautiful delicousness of these wonderful creatives .
Ripe and curvaceous that sound perfect!
    Bellisimo!

  • This scent sounds like the perfectly sensual and intoxicating scent for a beautiful woman! I loved the way she brought each scent profile to life! I’m in California USA

  • I love the analogy with Monica Belluluci… beautiful at any age or version! The perfume is a little more femme than what I usually go for, but the resin base sounds wonderful. I live in the US.

  • This fragrance sounds amazing. Looks like Dawn’s perfumes are sold in Barneys In NYC so I will have to check it out next week. And I am from NY

  • So many wonderful notes in this one. I love the apricot and plum notes in perfumes. Thanks Ida for a great review as always, and thanks Dawn Spencer Hurwitz for the chance, i am in the EU.

  • First off, I loved the pictures. Sounds so sensual and the notes are amazing. I’m fascinated by the whole description.
    I live in California

  • Its lavish, extravagant curves and unbridled sensuality unmask our deeper nature. I’m always looking for tools to do just that.. Lovely review and what a brilliant concept. I always look forward to what Dawn has up her scented sleeve. 😉 I am in the US. Thanks to DSH for such generosity.

  • It sounds like a dense and old school scent. Probably not something I’d wear in public because of the tuberose, but something I’d like to wear at home.
Im in IL in the US. Thanks

  • Ida speaks so highly of this scent that I would love to try it, especially with the mix of florals and fruit. What a lovely chance to try a beloved scent, thank you for the generous draw, I’m on the US.

  • I loved this scent before it was discontinued and Ida captured the voluptuous quality of it so well. I’ve been out of this one for a while, and I’d love to have some again.

I live in USA (VA), and I’d love to see some of the Perfumed Court series, especially Mille Fleurs, re-released.

  • Ida’s description sounds really amazing and I definitely want to try this! I am a floriental girl. This was a wonderful idea. I am relatively new to DSH. I live in the uS and thanks for the draw! 🙂
