Der Duft Playground (Anselm Skogstad) 2025  +  Joy, on repeat giveaway

Founded by visual artist and perfumer Anselm Skogstad, DER DUFT is a perfume house that wears its name like a manifesto: Der Duft The Scent. Irreverently minimalist in concept but emotionally maximalist in execution, DER DUFT speaks of fragrance as a true art form – one that captures memories, stirs emotions, and forges connections.

DER DUFT is a fragrance house created by Anselm Skogstad, a visual artist who approaches scent like a composition – and it shows, as all the perfumes in the collection are layered, textured, and deeply personal. They all carry the imprint of their creator – artists like Anne-Sophie Behaghel, Antonio Alessandria, Miguel Matos, Nathalie Feisthauer, and Alex Lee bringing their own voice, style, and emotion into the mix. What emerges is a collection with many facets: some soft, some bold, some playful, others quietly introspective. A full spectrum of feelings – sometimes unexpected, often complex, some of them challenging – but always personal.

Just like Monopteros – one of my favorites from the brand – DER DUFT Playground is also composed by Anselm himself, which made me all the more curious to discover it. And surprise: it turned out to be one of the most effortlessly joyful, bright, and easy-to-wear scents in the entire collection.

“A place where you can play, free from worries and pressures! Your place, your game.” Anselm Skogstad

Here in Eastern Europe, spring has been playing hard to get this year – we’ve had snow in April, just before Easter, and the skies have stayed a stubborn shade of grey for longer than I care to count the months for.  This year, more than ever, I’m really craving summer. I’ve been longing for light, warmth, and something – anything – that smells like a breath of fresh air. And Playground landed on my skin at just the right time.

The first seconds made me sniff -pause – and feel. Something about it hit that soft, familiar spot, of instant nostalgia. That melan-choly (melon-calone) mix of aquatic-fruity freshness that stirs something quiet in the background brought me back to memories of my beloved L’Eau from Kenzo (the good, late 90’s one). Playground – in the first moments – feels like a modern version of that – transparent yet still textured, full of airy light, and still carrying that same translucent watery joy.

Imagine a coconut-free tropical – the clean girl aesthetic-Scandinavian-blonde-haired cousin of a beach scent. The tiaré is airy, easy, breezy, and luminous, carried by soft marine winds, and wrapped in a cashmere-like warmth that clings gently to the skin. It smells like a white towel after drying off in the sun, of sand-filled strands of hair that still hold the faint sweetness of melon shampoo and the salty imprint of the sea.

Playground doesn’t smell like drifting off on a lazy summer afternoon –  it’s the complete opposite. There’s something youthful and solar about it, a clean-bright rhythm that pulses with joy. It’s the energy of running out of the sea, salt still on your lips, grabbing slices of melon, and half-melting ice cream with sandy fingers. Of laughing barefoot across the beach, jumping back in line for another turn on the swing, not wanting the day to end. Playground smells like that – the sun catching your skin again and again, peeking through the gaps between moving leaves, wrapping everything in golden light.

It feels kinetic – an olfactive loop, like pushing your body on a swing, back and forth, playing with balance and gravity. The citrus notes give you the first push-off, the fruit rises in a soft arc, and the florals hover, weightless and light. Then the gentle return: skin-hugging musks pulling you back in. Warmth beneath a white t-shirt. Young. Alive. Carefree.

A dose of happiness that circles on repeat – a happy glitch in the matrix.  In the best possible way.

Notes: Calabrian Bergamot, Honeydew Melon, Marine Notes, Jasmin Absolute, Lily Of The Valley, Tiaré, Cashmere Wood, Musk, White Amber

  • My interest has been sparked by the idea of a new, modern fragrance that takes some classic and timeless styles and attempts to (and it sounds like, successfully) bring it into the future.

Nicoleta invoked the name of L’Eau from Kenzo, a fragrance I am very familiar with, but one that does not feel modern enough to make me comfortable in wearing. So Playground might be the right kind of fragrance for me – OF the past but not IN the past.

This sounds like a wonderful every day fragrance. I love a clean bright fragrance for summer. I either want a coconut tropical scent or something clean with a splash of citrus. I am in the US so not eligible for this giveaway but I has to comment because these easy to wear unique playful fragrances are truly special. We have a house in NC outerbanks and I think of coming back from the beach showering in the outside shower under the deck so there’s a fresh smell with a melon snack before a late dinner. I would really love to try this fragrance.

  • Nicoleta’s review of Der Duft Playground highlights its vibrant, floral character, crafted by Anselm Skogstad, with a modern yet timeless appeal. The fragrance’s playful, multi-layered composition and its ability to evoke personal stories through scent spark my interest. I live in Poland, EU.

  • Having a summer scent that uses melon is so special. To me it is an under utilized note. So unexpected and so beautiful. Matching it with tiare, marine notes and, be still my heart, lily of the valley! A Scandinavian summer indeed. In maryland.

  • LindenNoir says:

This review made me feel the scent before even smelling it! The idea of a coconut-free tropical fragrance that channels that clean, carefree, sun-warmed vibe is super appealing. I love the comparison to drying off with a towel after the sea and the whole “Scandinavian-blonde cousin of a beach scent” aesthetic — so vivid and different from the usual sweet or coconut-heavy summer scents. The mention of L’Eau par Kenzo made my ears perk up too, that used to be my signature in high school. Now I’m curious to see how Playground captures that same nostalgia in a more modern, textured way.

  • Wow, this sounds like a scent I didn’t know I was craving until now. That bit about melon-shampoo hair and sun-dried towels? Instant sense memory! I love marine and aquatic notes, but I’ve been bored of the usual ozonic clichés — this one sounds like it brings back that fresh 90s vibe without feeling dated. Also, tiaré without the typical tropical overload? Count me in. This might just be my new summer skin scent.

I’m obsessed with the way this perfume is described like a loop — “an olfactive swing” is such a gorgeous image. I’ve been wanting something bright and solar, but not loud or too sweet. The balance between citrus, soft fruits, airy florals, and musks sounds like exactly the kind of rhythm I’d wear daily. Joyful but nuanced — not many perfumes pull that off. Now Playground is officially on my try-list.

Nicoleta totally got me with that whole “happy glitch in the matrix” line. I love scents that have this quiet joy to them — not just perfume as a fashion statement but as a real emotion, bottled. I’ve been following DER DUFT for a while and really appreciate the artistry behind each fragrance. The way this one seems to shimmer with light and memory feels deeply personal. I need a sample asap.

  • The imagery in this review is stunning — it brought me straight to childhood summers, barefoot, messy, and free. I usually go for deeper, moodier scents, but this feels like something that could lift me out of a grey-day funk in one spray. Also, the tiaré + cashmere + melon + marine combo? That’s so intriguing. I’m curious how those layers settle on skin, especially in heat. I’m definitely checking this one out.

  • I love how Nicoleta’s review manages to conjure up and bring forth the playful nature of the scent, in a sparkly and bright manner. Makes me want to experience this scent more.
I am only familiar with Cinematic from this brand which I find to also be a unique scent.

Thanks for the draw. EU based

Thank you for the lovely review Nicoleta! I love how you have “painted” my imagination with the description of this perfume.
Everything about Der Duft Playground appeals to me and seems like it would be so delicious playing on my skin.
I do love the concept of creating a fragrance that can be a transporting place of joy, carefree state of mind. I am not familiar with the house Der Duft but what sparks my interest is the kinetic push as you mentioned, the fresh kick of citruses ,the gentle touch of florals, and coming back to soft coforting musks .A “back-forth playful” scent that would be the perfect companion to the first day of summer.
This sounds like something I would really enjoy.
Thank you for the super interesting & honest review, and for the giveaway!

  • this sounds like the perfect remedy for those august sultry days when you’re craving for any kind of freshness.
Nicoleta’s review takes me back to the seaside, where the salty wind brings with him the fragrance of the sun lotions, and mixes with the smell of the fresh juicy melon you brought from home.
Melon is also pretty rare to find as main note, so I’m interested about this fragrance, I hope to try it.
    I’m from Italy.

  • First of all, I looove the notes – Melon, Marine Notes, Jasmin, Lily Of The Valley, Tiaré… Like the fragrance was made for me!

I like how Nicoleta describes it as a “coconut-free tropical – the clean girl aesthetic-Scandinavian-blonde-haired cousin of a beach scent” and as a “dose of happiness that circles on repeat – a happy glitch in the matrix. In the best possible way.”

  • Playground sounds like such a breath of fresh air, joyful, light, and full of movement. I was especially drawn to the way she described the scent as a clean, modern tropical with melon (how often do you see that in a fragrance?!), marine notes, and soft tiaré — no coconut overload, just sunshine and summer energy. That image of running barefoot on the beach, skin warmed by the sun, salt and sweetness in the air — it really speaks to the kind of carefree, feel-good fragrance I love to wear when the weather brightens. I live in France and would love to discover Playground for myself.

  • Nice review Nicoleta! What a great collection Mr. Skogstad has developed: A full spectrum of scents and feelings made by great collaborator perfumers. Spring in Spain has been shy too but the tables are turning: sun is here, roses and other flowers are blooming as the mood of the people. Playground produces nostalgia for Nicoleta of older times and older fragrances: it is transparent, airy but textured: aquatic but it seems not “caloney”. A feel-good fragrance? it seems so and it is no small thing. I live in Spain, EU.

  • Playground sounds so bright, playful and joyful with those melon and marine tropical accords. I am a fan of German niche perfumery, however have not sampled anything from Der Duft yet. I would be more than happy to win this intriguing new creation. From EU.

  • I’m in the USA but I would love to get my nose on this at some point. Sounds absolutely amazing and like a perfect summer day at the beach!

  • What truly sparked my curiosity in this article was the description of “Playground” as a scent that evokes the joy of running out of the sea, grabbing slices of melon, and laughing barefoot across the beach. The imagery of a clean, bright rhythm pulsing with joy, and the scent’s ability to capture the essence of carefree summer days, is both nostalgic and invigorating .
Anselm Skogstad’s approach to perfumery, allowing each fragrance to tell its own story without imposing a narrative, resonates deeply with me.
    I’m from EU.

  • Playground sounds like sunshine in a bottle. I love the melon/calone note and even if it screams 90s, I love to smell it in “classic” and modern fragrances alike. Tiaré, salt and melon sound like a carefree summer trio to lift anyone’s spirits up.
    Thanks from the EU.

  • I’ve been curious about some fragrances in the minimally-packaged Der Duft lineup for a while. Playground sounds very easy to enjoy; all the carefree summer vibe of a sunstan lotion scent, but without all the coconut. “Playground smells like that – the sun catching your skin again and again, peeking through the gaps between moving leaves, wrapping everything in golden light.” It really sounds like a blast to wear on a warm day and intrigued by the largely weightless texture these materials achieve. Sounds wonderful.

    I’m in the USA.

  • Im curious as to what other textures the fragrance invokes along with airyness. My fav fresh air beachy scent is ceil by amouage. It reminds me of the beach bc of the freshness. I love floral and fresh maximalist scents. Thank u for the review i hope I can try it with the giveaway. From Fort Lauderdale Florida.

  • BellaSmella says:

I really enjoyed Nicoleta’s review. I have to say, “Playground” by Der Duft really sparks my interest with its apparent nosatalgic and happy nature.

I like the idea that even on those “stubborn shade of grey” days (that the UK is also very well known for) you can transport yourself to a more cheerful place.

“Jumping back in line for another turn on the swing, not wanting the day to end” – ahhh this line just brings a smile to my face :). It’s way too easy to lose some of that playful attitude with adulthood. I love that this scent captures a sense of this, helping to re-spark that joy when you wear it. It would be an absolute pleasure to try it. Thank you Ca Fleure Bon.

I was moved by the concept of the playground, alongside with the notes. Iam eager to smell this scent and feel the words that were used to describe this particular scent. I live in Greece, EU.

  • Playground sounds laid back, carefree and light, but I’m expecting it to be surprising and something you’ve never smelled before, and I’m saying that knowing Anselm’s other fragrance, Monopteros.
I was sold at ” the clean girl aesthetic-Scandinavian-blonde-haired cousin of a beach scent”, now I must make Playground’s acquaintance 🙂
Thanks for the review and the draw, from Europe.

  • I’m not eligible to win as I live in the US; but I hope I can purchase a sample! This sounds utterly divine! I am in dire need of some summer joy!

  • What an intriguing and vibrant composition! The juxtaposition of fruity sweetness with earthy, woody depth in Der Duft Playground sounds like a joyful yet sophisticated experience. The mention of ‘Joy on Repeat’ as a playful nod to childhood nostalgia, while maintaining a modern, polished edge, is especially captivating. Anselm Skogstad has crafted something that feels both whimsical and refined. I’d love to experience how the cassis, rhubarb, and sandalwood interplay on skin. Thanks for the detailed review and the chance to discover this gem. Cheers from France 😉

Coconut-free tropical sounds great. I love coconut but I think it’s a bit overused in these kinds of scents. I like to see the floral and ozonic notes shine in this one. It just sounds so fresh and upbeat!

    I live in Denmark, EU

  • Playground sounds like an uplifting and radiant composition. The idea of a tropical scent without the usual coconut cliché is refreshing, and the mix of honeydew melon, marine notes, jasmine, and white amber sounds like pure joy in a bottle. I really admire Anselm Skogstad’s minimalist yet emotionally evocative approach to perfumery — it always feels intentional and honest. This fragrance seems to capture the carefree spirit of summer with a clean, luminous twist.

This sounds fun! I have never tested anything from Der Duft, but hopefully I will start my journey with Playground! Thanks! EU

  • Nicoleta’s words painted such a pretty little world of sunlight, sea air, and melon-sweet hair. I’ve always been drawn to scents that feel like memories, and this one sounds like the gentlest kind of joy: clean, nostalgic, and quietly golden. I’m in the UK 🙂
