Der Duft MATCH Review (Anne-Sophie Behaghel) 2021 + Rubik’s Cube Draw

Der Duft Match review

Der Duft MATCH, edit by Nicoleta

The “minimalist anarchist”- as I secretly refer to it – Der Duft is one of the coolest brands I had the pleasure of discovering in the last year. With its irreverent minimalist message but with well thought, beautifully composed and multi-layered fragrances that spoke their stories articulate and clear, Der Duft was the house that I recommended most often to my online “perfume-pen- pals” when asked what’s cool, hip, new and exciting in the perfume world.

I’m sure you can imagine the giddy excitement of waiting for their latest release, ever since I saw the black and white promo photo on their Instagram page. So, when I found the black envelope containing the sample in the mailbox I chuckled and had a huge Pavlovian grin on my face, as I knew I was going to be in for a treat. I sprayed some Match on my skin, as I could almost hear the sound of a match being struck and thrown towards my nose. Challenge accepted!

Perfumer Anne Sophie Behaghel

“I always loved smelling the scent of people and their homes!  My nose guided me since my childhood while smells reassured me -or not- when I arrive in a new unknown place. I love smells that are unlike any other. As an independent perfumer, I aim to bring new fragrances to humanity. What I like about creating a perfume, could be compared to art installations or performance pieces. I like to create perfumes that intrigue, challenge, surprise and that may not please everyone. While creating  Der Duft MATCH, I wanted to compose a revolutionary perfume, fresh and exciting. MATCH is the scent of passion, maybe a perfume that brings people together, to the rare alchemy that we want to be eternal!” –  Perfumer Anne-Sophie Behaghel of Flair Paris, creator of MATCH

With the opening riffs of the Pulp Fiction song (Misirlou) blasting in the background, Der Duft MATCH kicks off mouth-wateringly alive. The doors are kicked open, and in comes the main character, sporting a nonchalant toothpick-in-his-teeth-kinda smile.  Everything about the opening of Match is acute, high-pitched, bouncing from one pointy edge to the other, and feels like rapidly hitting the flipper buttons of a brightly lit olfactive pinball machine. We have freshly ground sneezy black pepper, sharp grazed ginger, and the bitter white peel of an impossibly tart grapefruit, all bumping into each other. Behind the loud music, you start to hear a low crackling hum, like a sentient whisper calling to you from afar. With its nutty-earthy spiciness, cumin cuts down the adrenalized tempo and adds carnal warmth and the specter of a slightly unnerving human-like presence, guiding you into the next setting.

Anne-Sophie Behaghel rotates the facets of this olfactive Rubik’s cube until all the facets align to similarly-textured nervures of wood. Through some time-traveling wizardry,  Der Duft Match reads now very 70’s on my skin – this is exactly how I imagine a wood-paneled room with green malachite decorations, bright orange shag-carpeted floors, and lava lamps would smell like. Ambroxan acts as a magnifying glass to all the woody elements, deepening the creaminess of the sandal and rounding up the cedar, polishing up the perfect nostalgic retro-futuristic woody time capsule. At the next rotation of the olfactive cube, colors align in a soft beige and buttery cream color palette. Both powerful and subtle, like a claw hidden in a suede glove, the iris takes over in the drydown, earthy, powdery, and deep. There’s also a “rooty” quality to the iris mixture in the last stages of the drydown that winks to the shaved ginger roots of the top notes, coming full circle, and make the perfume even more satisfying, like lines that perfectly align with each other in a completely flawless pattern you can’t help but touch.

Architectural, abstract, and both fun and challenging at the same time, just like a Rubik’s cube, Der Duft MATCH is a woody construction that rotates and reveals new facets on each wear. If you want a smart, ASMR-like olfactive experience, where the notes evolve, flow, and collide among themselves and the background, everchanging yet playing within the same realm, do give this Match a strike.   .

Notes: Black Pepper, Cumin, Ginger, Grapefruit, Sandalwood, Vetiver, Cedarwood, Ambroxan, Iris Butter, Karmawood, Suede

  • The description of the xcent in this review sparked my interest – scents which change their appearance are always a huge fascination for me.

    Living in the EU

  • Der Duft Match seems like a futuristic abstract creation that has both slightly dirty and woody aspects. I am in US.

  • DER Duft Match kicks off mouth-wateringly alive… You had me at (kicks) LoL it most be special if you recommend it the most!! Scent of passion, that brings everyone together, very intriguing!!! With so many doing the same old things, I really appreciate how you aim for different unique fragrances!!! Nicoleta review was excellent (IMO) USA thanks Cafleurebon best reviewers in the game!!! Good luck everyone!!!

  • This sounds great. I love the description of the actor’s swagger for the opening, and then the 70s living room vibe of the middle and end of the perfume. Finally a blend for my chaotic and peppery grapefruit+sandalwood loving self! I live in the U.S.

  • It is interesting when the perfumer Anne-Sophie talks about creating a perfume akin to creating an art installation or a performance piece. Nicoleta’s review of Der Duft MATCH describes the perfume very well, and I was intrigued by the top note itself – black pepper and ginger; it seems spicy, but the other notes seem to make it more woody and floral. I have not tried Der Duft perfumes, but have read many rave reviews about them (on Cafleurebon). Thanks for the review and draw. From USA.

What sparks my interest most from the review is the vibrant description that the fragrance takes through its journey. I like ASMR so the comparison is intriguing. In St. Louis, MO

  • Well anything that is going to take me back to the 70’s is on my list. It would be going back to a simpler time in my life. I’d like that. In maryland.

  • Nicoleta! What a fantastic review! ❤️ Perfumer Anne-Sophie Behaghel‘s interests & creative motivations are fascinating! Scents as “art installations or performance pieces” that “intrigue, challenge, surprise and that may not please everyone… revolutionary perfume, fresh and exciting.” Yes, please! I remember being very drawn to CaFleurBon’s review of Grasse, and Der Duft is on my list to find. I will have to look again at this art house! Thank you, Nicoleta for your eloquent introduction to this unusual & fascinating new perfume! Thank you for this amazing opportunity! ❤️ USA

  • Black pepper, ginger, nuttiness got my initial attention but I like the idea of a scent that can’t be pinned down. It made me think of perfume beginning at high speed then moving into slow motion. I live in Sydney, Australia.

  • Der Duft is an interesting brand concept – I appreciate it is marketing towards simplicity when we are often bombarded by extreme images. What captured my interest is that this perfume is woody and abstract. The concept behind each der duft has been quite interesting, I really need to pick up a sample kit! Thank you from Canada.

  • I’m not the biggest fan of cumin, but if Match is the scent of passion, i can accept the challenge.
It sounds very interesting and adventurous.
BTW I love type writer, another creation of Anne-Sophie Behaghel.
    From Mexico, saludos!

  • The stories behind this fragrance and the amazing notes of it spark my interest. I live in Poland, EU.

  • I have to honest, I wasn’t aware of this brand until I read this review (thank you Nicoleta, simply – an awesome review). It sounds very exciting, intriguing and different which is something I always appreciate it.

  • I tried out Bubble and Act from Der Duft and loved both of em! Whole house seems to be very experimental and innovative and that’s why I love niche perfumery! Nicoleta wrote a great review, but her sentence at the end – “If you want a smart, ASMR-like olfactive experience, where the notes evolve, flow, and collide among themselves and the background, everchanging yet playing within the same realm, do give this Match a strike.” sold the fragrance for me! I’d love to try it out, I live in Croatia, EU.

Notes: Black Pepper, Cumin, Ginger, Grapefruit, Sandalwood, Vetiver, Cedarwood, Ambroxan, Iris Butter, Karmawood, Suede A beautiful description by Nicoleta has sold me to try this house and I am intrigued by the rubix cube analogy and the genius by the perfumer in creating this out of the box fragrance. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

A beautiful description by Nicoleta has got me curious about this house and this perfume. The fact that you can’t pin this fragrance down I think will appeal to niche fragrance purists. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • This sounds like it may be challenging due to the cumin, but it could go either way. I’m still intrigued. Thanks for the draw. From Indianapolis.

  • ‘The minimalist anarchist’,Der Duft Match abstract and challenging construction as an olfactory woody Rubik cube matches the need for cool, nongeneric , artistic fragrances.Nicoleta reveals this facets of Match, thanks for the review and the draw, from Romania with love!

  • Nicoleta’s article strikes up plenty of interest in this olfactory journey for me. From the explosive opening to the nostalgic, retro-futuristic heart, and an earthy, powdery, and deep base.
I enjoyed Nicoleta’s comparison of the scent journey to the Rubik’s cube… “Match is a woody construction that rotates and reveals new facets on each wear”.
I’m ready for the trip this fragrance has to offer . USA

  • I love the minimalism and humor of Der Duft as well. This comparison to a Rubiks cube is great! I’d really love to try Match. I am in the US.

  • Thanks for the great review Nicoleta.

I really can’t imagine this fragrance in my head. It is something to be experiences. It’s like trying to explain to somebody what the smell of a matchstick that has just been struck and has started burning is like – utterly difficult to put into words and must be experienced.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • I LOVE the connectikn with pulpo fiction and and…. The seventies!!!
My name is Edgar @parfum_sindromico and I am writing from Tenerife, Spain (EU).
    GOOD LUCK TO ALL!

  • I liked perfumer’s thoughts that this perfume is “perfume that brings people together, to the rare alchemy that we want to be eternal” and with beautiful pyramid with pepper, sandalwood, Vetiver and lovely suede – sounds very unique and beautiful.

“Architectural, abstract, and both fun and challenging…” At last a parfum can be challenging because lately most of the parfums reminds you if others. Not much original.
I never tried Der Duft parfums.
    I live in London, UK.

  • I love perfumes that you on a journey…and Nicoleta certainly makes it sound like this one does. I also love the image of a (wooden) Rubik’s Cube. I’d love a chance to try it. I’m in Oklahoma, USA. Thanks, as always, for the draw!

  • Wow, this sounds like an incredibly interesting fragrance! To describe it as a throwback to the 1970’s decor has me intrigued! There’s such a blend of different type of notes, I can’t even begin to imagine what it smells like or if I ever experienced anything similar to it. This was definitely a fascinating read!
    I live in the US.

  • I love all Cafleurebon’s reviews and feel like I learn so much every time. I feel totally unexperienced yet, and often still find it difficult to fully understand the description of the notes and their interactions… But this review from Nicoleta… Oh my! I just could SEE the notes dancing and vibrating in front of me, as if I could watch the bottle and smell the juice! I love the toothpick in the mouth smile and it was awesome to read that Anne-Sophie Behaghel loves to smell people’s homes, because I do too and I might not remember people’s smell or recognize many perfumes, but I remember the smell of their homes for sure! I am extremely intrigued by Der Duft and would love to be the lucky winner! Greetings from Italy

  • Thanks Nicoleta for this ‘striking’ article!

Der Duft is one of the Swedish fragrance houses that has been on my watch list. I haven’t tried any of their fragrances yet, but have seen more and more great reviews pop up over the internet. Which means they must be doing something right!

It’s great to read that Anne-Sophie Behaghel creates fragrances that are revolutionary, fresh, exciting and could brings people together. Who could argue with that! She’s has my attention!

What intrigues me is the complexity of a fragrance. When Nicoleta describes this experience of MATCH like the turning of a Rubix cube she has my curiosity and I would very much like to try to solve this one.

    Greetings from the UK!

  • This fragrance sounds like a very clever one, the combination of notes is interesting and it seems like an overall sparkling composition, with many dynamics and an unpredictable evolution.
Also I love ASMR so I would like to experience the olfactive version of it!
    I am in the EU.
    Thanks!

  • Wow, Match sounds a funny fragrance. It seems like a challenging fragrance, but c’mon baby light my fire, challenge accepted.
    From Mexico, thank you !

  • Nicoleta’s review of Der Duft Match has me feeling all kinds of nostalgic for the 1970s. Wood-paneling! Lava lamps! Shag-carpeting! The montage of Jack Nicholson is fun and lets me know the fragrance is daring and multi-faceted. I would love to try this minimalist masterpiece. I’m in MD, USA.

  • When I can’t imagine how a perfume smells based on its notes I’m immediately intrigued. This sounds like a fascinating olfactory experience. I live in US.

  • A perfume that smells like a match? Wow, that’s cool, I want that.
Love this kind of originality. I’d love to try it and enjoy it together with my husband.
    With love from Mexico.

  • I think Anne-Sophie Behagel and Amelie Bourgeois are doing absolutely fascinating work. I’m always keen to try their creations and Match has some of my favourite notes: grapefruit, black pepper, cumin, and a woody base accord. Yes please!

  • Yes, please <3 …

I love this olfactory perception revealed in Nicoleta's review.

"Both powerful and subtle, like a claw hidden in a suede glove, the iris takes over in the drydown, earthy, powdery, and deep. There’s also a “rooty” quality to the iris mixture in the last stages of the drydown". Sounds right up my alley, I am very curious about it!

I live in Europe and I am grateful for this chance and the generosity of Der Duft!

  • Now we’re talking, DER DUFT is my kind of abstract fragrance , I’m interested in “claw hidden in a suede glove” feel , sandalwood and the iris Nicoleta mentioned.
    Thank you all

    ???

This sounds ridiculous, scary, amazing, intriguing.
I’ve never heard of a fragrance described, or created in this manner, and now I’m infatuated.
My mind is running wild with the thoughts of what this crazy concoction could possibly smell like to my nose, that Rubik’s cube constantly twisting and turning to reveal new and different shades and facets…

I don’t like watching ASMR videos, but when you described this as fragrance ASMR my head exploded with giddiness.

    What an amazing, electric review,
What an interesting and outstanding fragrance, I could only imagine.

I’m from just outside of Houston Tx.

  • Kristian Santos says:

What a great experience it brought to my imagination! Nicoleta’s review is very specific and on point, as it build an actual scenery of description in my imagination. I think this kind of reviews is next level, bringin animation/ life to the notes. With that, Der Duft Match is must try for me, plus my love for iris, pepper, and sandalwood.
Cheers to this great house and review!

I do not think that I can write a description better than this one “Architectural, abstract, and both fun and challenging at the same time, just like a Rubik’s cube, Der Duft MATCH is a woody construction that rotates and reveals new facets on each wear”. Thank you, Nicoleta for these wonderful words that reflect the beauty of Der Duft MATCH and the proficiency of Anne-Sophie Behaghel. I like the notes especially when dry down when the fragrance’s notes connect the top note of ginger with the iris. Cheers from Sarajevo, BiH

  • I was young in the ’70’s and miss many things from that time (still owning a lava lamp). It was a wild ride for many and I’d love to experience what Match represents and fulfills. Hello from Dallas, TX!

  • wandering_nose says:

Scents like an extinguished match and candle are among my ever favorites… Der Duft as a brand has just shot right up to the rank of a genius in my eyes with this one. I love woody and spicy notes, seems like Match and I would be a match made in heaven. Complex and multi-faceted makes it even better. Nicoleta – thank you for this dynamic and super insightful review. I am based in Ireland, EU

  • Will Der Duft MATCH make me feel like Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction ,dancing wildly? Maybe, but what I know is the fragrance is dark and opulent, and I like that . Thanks
Back and forth between USA and Scotland, two weeks in US -> two weeks in Scotland and so on. Basically both USA and UK at the same time

  • Morphing fragrances have always interested me, given that they change both on the same person due to climate changes and skin pH, but also from person to person. Not a huge fan of ambroxan, but this scent might pull it off well. Thank you for the opportunity, i hope to win Match by Der Duft. I live in Romania, EU.

This sounds exciting Nicoleta’s review has ignited my interest like the match. This spin in the 70s sounds super fun. what a stunning review.

Count me in please, and thank you for this draw. Greetings from Athens-Greece.

  • This is a scent that I would love to smell on my husband, or even in a candle/diffuser! In Louisiana, USA.

  • DER DUFT Match i think is a throwback to the classic woody-aromatics from the 80s and early 90’s. With Anne-Sophie Behaghelas perfumer well made i believe . I like her work , especially Kuir Kora
    Thanks
USA only , hopefully not for too long

I am dying to try this house! What a great review and of course now I’m even more curious. This sounds so interesting! I love your description of how the rooty quality of the iris at the end ties it to the ginger in the beginning. I have such a mental image of this one. Thanks for the draw from the US

  • Der Duft Match is definitely not your average woody fragrance, but rather complex one instead.
I think the black pepper, ginger, grapefruit and cumin will make it really sexy .
Thank you Nicoleta Tomsa ,Der Duft

  • I’m very interested to see if this fragrance could cause me to feel like I’m, somehow, in the 1970’s. One fragrance that does do that for me is Dior Sauvage Parfum, but I’m not sure why it causes me to feel that way. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • Love this review! I’m a child of the 70s and the sights, sounds and smells are close to my heart. This fragrance sounds really intriguing; each ingredient on their own is lovely to me, I’m dying to smell how the combination works. Thanks for the draw!

  • Woody ,spicy , leathery fragrance, Match feels like its coming from the late 70s or early 80s
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign
    USA

  • Bryant Worley says:

What sparked my interest is the fact that the fragrance seems quite explosive, which makes it interesting. Along with that, the fact that its not linear is excellent, and not, at all, boring.

I live in Waldorf, Maryland, USA.

  • Lovely review Nicoletta! I particularly was interested in how you compared the fragrance to a Rubik’s cube – structural and challenging, abstract and intricate. I love how she compares it to how a Rubik’s cube is both textural and evocative of the era of the 70’s, just like Match feels. This type of analogy completely fascinates me, and I’m really interested in smelling the type of fragrance that inspires it. I live in the US.
