When I was just a lad looking for my true vocation
My father said “Now son, this choice deserves deliberation
Though you could be a doctor or perhaps a financier
My boy why not consider a more challenging career?”

Hey ho ho
You’ll cruise to foreign shores
And you’ll keep your mind and body sound
By working out of doors

True friendship and adventure are what we can’t live without

And when you’re a professional pirate
That’s what the job’s about. ~ A Professional Pirate, from Muppet Treasure Island

I recently received a discovery set from this year’s Art and Olfaction award-winning Day Three Fragrances perfumer Michael Paul – whose artisanal perfume category submission, La Tacita de Cafe, went from Finalist to Aftel Award for Handmade Perfume winner (I’m honored to share that, as judge for the artisan and independent categories, it was among my favorites). As I sampled all 7 fragrances, one struck me: Day Three Fragrances Ámbar Dominicano, which appealed to one of my alternate personae.

I have to thank the perfumer for indulging my lifelong piratical aspirations. My family and friends are aware that I have always been a pirate at heart; I know more sea chanteys than you can shake a stick at, and have never been timid about singing them at full volume while dancing a sailor’s hornpipe (even in public). From the first spritz of Ámbar Dominicano, I was transported to the Caribbean and Hispaniola of old – so rich in history and culture – which is beautifully depicted in this perfume (it is an extrait). Day Three Fragrances Ámbar Dominicano is an embarrassment of olfactory riches, scarcely contained in one little flacon. While it possesses all the attributes of an ambery resinous scent (labdanum aka rock rose, vanilla, benzoin, patchouli), it owes a large proportion of its allure to cola – with its vanillic, citrus and cinnamon notes – and the popular Dominican beverage known as mamajuana.

Istock

Mamajuana is, historically speaking – is considered one of the first distilled alcoholic beverages of the Americas, preceding rum (which in later years became part of the recipe). The earliest Spanish adventurers initially mixed their alcohol with the native Taíno peoples’ herbal tea; when leatherback turtle meat was added, mamajuana became so commonly touted as an aphrodisiac that during El Jefe’s dictatorship, selling it was prohibited unless one had a medical license. The infamous Porfirio Rubirosa (international playboy, polo player, race car driver, and secret agent) was known to consume large quantities of the drink – and claimed that it contributed to his considerable sexual prowess.

Mamajuana today is a mixture of bark and herbs which are soaked in rum (usually dark rum, but white rum is also used), red wine, and honey. Additional ingredients (leaves, barks, sticks and roots) vary regionally; frequently other ingredients such as cinnamon, raisins, strawberry, and lemon or lime juice are added (along with grated tortoise shell and/or sea turtle penile shaft if considered an aphrodisiac). It is deep red in color, and is said to taste similar to port wine.

Day Three Fragrances Ámbar Dominicano boasts both luminous and crepuscular attributes which distinguish it from other boozy or amber perfumes. The piquancy of lime and passionfruit evoke a tropical, light-infused flair; the cola tones possess freshness, while lavender and immortelle impart herbal elements. Davana’s fulsome nature evokes the aroma of spirit-infused dried fruit; red wine, rum and sweet, warm spices further flesh out our perception of mamajuana (in combination with lime and honey). A classically dusky resinous base imbues this perfume with excellent longevity and added depth. The overall effect is that of shafts of light penetrating the stained-glass windows of an ancient dark cathedral. A sense of cool serenity pierced by warmth. In warmer months Ámbar Dominicano will bloom and expand – and in cooler climes it will provide cossetting comfort.

Notes: cola, lime, lavender, passion fruit, Mamajuana (spiced Dominican rum), cinnamon, immortelle absolute, honey, red wine, davana, rock rose (cistus labdanum), patchouli, vanilla, benzoin, sandalwood

Sample provided by the perfumer – many thanks! My nose is my own…

  • The fascinating and intriguing facts appealed to me and I just love how beautiful the review was. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

  • What appealed to me about this fragrance was that, “in warmer months Ámbar Dominicano will bloom and expand – and in cooler climes it will provide cossetting comfort”. – US

  • gamesmind says:

This sentence perfectly describes this fragrance: “A classically dusky resinous base imbues this perfume with excellent longevity and added depth.“

  • I went on a vacation to DR last July and loved Mamajuana, even brought a bottle home that I sip on whenever I feel nostalgic. This has always piqued my interest ever since he announced it, but alas it has been a bit out of my budget. Fingers crossed! Mike is a great dude, so happy to see him getting all of the accolades he deserves.

Ida’s review of Day Three Fragrances Ámbar Dominicano captivated with its unique luminosity and crepuscular qualities, setting it apart from other boozy or amber perfumes. The combination of lime, passionfruit, and fresh cola tones provided a tropical and refreshing twist, while lavender and immortelle added herbal nuances. The presence of mamajuana, red wine, rum, and sweet spices evoked the rich and aromatic essence of the Dominican drink. The fragrance’s classically dusky resinous base promised excellent longevity and depth, creating an overall effect of cool serenity pierced by warmth. A versatile scent that blooms in warmer months and offers comforting solace in cooler climes. I live in North Carolina, USA.

  • When I read that sexual prowess line, I knew I had to have a go. LOL Never tried mamajuana, but the ingredients actually sound delectable. More delectable than the extravagant claims at least. And minus the tutle penis. Ayayay what am I getting myself into here. lol Let’s stick with the sun coming through stained glass windows analogy! Great visual. Dried fruits, rum, honey and amber is what I like to hear. Haven’t really tried many fragrances with an outright cola accord either. But I love that artisanal creators like Michael are bringing something truly unique to the table. And it doesn’t hurt that I’m a fan of the Pirates of the Caribbean series either. Sounds like an excellent summer nights lounging fragrance. Just in time too. My sexual prowess could use some piquing. 🙂 Canada.

  • Oh wow! This sounds amazing. I don’t think I’m a pirate at heart, but I do think I would like to play one on TV. This scent would help me get into character. And I learned a lot reading this too. Who knew about mamajuana? I do now. In maryland.

  • Spiced rum sounds like an interesting note. Added to red wine and lime? Now it sounds very interesting. I do enjoy rock rose in a fragrance and also honey. Ambar Dominicano is now added to my wishlist. Thanks for another awesome review and draw. Mich USA

The whole caribbean vibe to this fragrance sounds amazing. The name, Ambar Dominicano, even sounds like a rum drink straight out of the Dominican Republic.

The combo of vanilla, benzoin & patchouli is right up my alley. This would be a great addition to my collection. I’m also looking forward to putting my nose on La Tacita de Cafe.

Hello from Florida, and thank you to Ida for the review! Ámbar Dominicano sounds gorgeous. I love a cola note, but I don’t think I would’ve understood the full concept for the scent without this illustrative review. I’d love to give Àmbar Dominicano (and mamajuana) a try!

  • Ida’s description of this scent is so intriguing— I’m particularly interested in the cola note and how that plays with the other notes listed. I also really appreciated the bit of history on mamajuana. I am located in the US!

  • This gives me The Pirates of the Caribbean vibes <3 Hey Ho Ho!
I'd sure love to put my nose on it 😀

  • Ken White says:

I love boozy and spicy scents. Ida’s description of this fragrance is very interesting, particularly the rum and wine notes. The story has me intrigued as well. I’d really like to win this or at the least, try it. New Jersey, USA

  • I have been hearing a lot about this brand recently but have not tried anything from them yet. Ámbar Dominicano certainly sounds like a real winner. I love rich, resinous and boozy scents and according to Ida, this possesses all three elements. I think the cola and mamajuana notes make it sound very interesting. I adore warm spices and it seems to have a hefty dose of them. I would love to try it, I live in NC, USA.

  • A perfume for pirates! Interesting review Ida. I’ve never heard of mamajuana before. In theory, it sounds similar to a birch beer and rum concoction. The amber base is made more tropical with the addition of fruit, spice, herbs, honey and wine. Ida’s’ description of the fragrance as shafts of light penetrating the stained glass window of an ancient dark cathedral is very evocative. I’m in the US.

  • Ámbar Dominicano is a captivating fragrance that evokes the warm and enchanting spirit of the Dominican Republic. With its rich and sensual blend of notes, this fragrance transports you to a tropical paradise, where the golden sun meets the amber shores. The initial burst of sweet and juicy tropical fruits is balanced beautifully with the deep and earthy essence of amber, creating a harmonious and intoxicating scent experience. Ámbar Dominicano exudes elegance and sophistication, making it a perfect choice for those seeking a fragrance that captures the essence of exotic allure.

  • wandering_nose says:

Somehow Ida’s review feels quite poetic and nostalgic to me. Possibly because if relates to the nostalgic times of legendary pirates and their infamous conquests, and how Ida had a phase in her life when she was immersed in those themes with her heart. I am one appreciator of rum but have not been familiar with Mamajuana so I appreciate the opportunity to learn about the rum’s aphrodisiac predecessor. The excerpt from Ida’s review “While it possesses all the attributes of an ambery resinous scent (labdanum aka rock rose, vanilla, benzoin, patchouli), it owes a large proportion of its allure to cola – with its vanillic, citrus and cinnamon notes – and the popular Dominican beverage known as mamajuana.” sums up Ámbar Dominicano beautifully to me as a lover of deep, resinous and spicy fragrances. I would love my skin to have the opportunity to soak up this beauty by the one and only Michael Paul. Big thank you from the EU

  • Wow, this is one of the more unique fragrances I’ve seen. I enjoyed learning about the history of Mamajuana. I’ve got to try it someday. What appeals to me the most is that note of mamajuana, as well as the cola note, which is such a nostalgic smell. Something new yet familiar.
    Cheers from Illinois, USA.

  • Jack Sparrow mode activated!
Ambar Dominicano truly sounds remarkable: a contrast between hot and cold, spicy and refreshing, elegant and tropical; images of a pirate sailing and singing freely on his ship, under the sun, half drunk and foul mouthed, and “shafts of light penetrating the stained-glass windows of an ancient dark cathedral”; a mysterious drink that I hear about for the first time, mamajuana.
So many things to be intrigued and excited about! I am particularly curious about the cola effect combined with tropical fruit, resins and woods – sounds like a unique combination to me!
    Many thanks from the EU.

  • Cujo Canari says:

The combination of spices, rum, and amber is fantastically warm and engaging. It’s a boozy energy with luxury feels and sophistication. I found Ambar Dominicano similar to Penhaligon’s Clandestine Clara, which I also love.

  • Uncle1979 says:

Props to Michael Paul for his impressive career , nothing but a magical journey with perfume ending.
I thought Mamajuana was a trendy Caribbean cocktail, the almost ancient origin was such a surprise. I love such noodles, and Ida know how to serve them well.
Ambar Dominicano sounds fantastic, Ida’s take on the fragrance instantly reminded me of being in the Caribbean, eating traditional Cuba Libre Cake Glazed with Honey ,and drinking freshly squeezed lime juice.
Appreciate everything i read, and the giveaway campaign

  • Great review by Ida, as always.
This is the first time I read something about Day Three Fragrances but they surely are interesting. Ambar Dominicano gives me the vibes of taking a drink in the amazing beaches of Dominican Republic. I love that it has the boozy notes and also the herbs. Mamajuana is a drink that I tried in Mexico years ago and it was amazing experience.
I hope I win this one.

  • Scentsational Exchange says:

What appealed to me in the review of Day Three Fragrances Ámbar Dominicano is the evocative storytelling and the way Ida connects the fragrance to her personal passion for pirates and sea chanteys.
The description of Ámbar Dominicano as an “embarrassment of olfactory riches” and a fragrance that transports us to the Caribbean and Hispaniola is intriguing. The mention of mamajuana, a traditional Dominican beverage, adds cultural depth to the perfume’s inspiration and ingredients.
    I am from Europe

  • Now that the truly hot days of summer have kicked off, it’s the perfect time for bay rum and fragrances of the boozy, high-seas variety. Ámbar Dominicano sounds deliciously apt in that regard—tropical fruit, tart citrus, warm spice, resinous amber, and the richness of cola. I suspect the drydown on this one is wonderful.

Also, really interesting review! I enjoyed learning about its history in the Americas and how it it’s made today. It’s a clever inspiration for a boozy, summer-friendly amber fragrance.

    I’m in the midwest, USA.

  • Coming from entrepreneurial family, from a magician to perfumer, and even pirate, I’m happy by the way Michael Paul is looking for his his happy place
Ambar Dominicano story transported to my younger days, and my trips to Dominican Republic . Can’t remember if I ever tried Mamajuana, or not but all kinds of Dominican rum were part of my every day routine back then wow .
The dusty resinous base , and ancient dark cathedral parallel were unexpected, and made me even more curious about Ambar Dominicano. Enigmatic fragrance, with some seductive properties , a treat I’d love to win
    Thanks for the draw

  • Enjoyed the short history on mamajuana. Seeing how the scent captures that vibe will be interesting. Thanks for the opportunity – US/California.

  • I remember my grandfather bringing me a bottle of mamajuana from the Dominican Republic a couple of years ago and it was delicious! I’ve never been there but from this review I feel like this perfume has the power to transport you in the Caribbean with its spices, cola and woods. I’d love to try it! I live in Italy, EU

When I think of self-made people like Michael Paul, a quote from the great Coco Chanel comes to mind:
“Fashion has 2 purposes, comfort and love.Beauty comes when fashion succeeds”
The same could be applied to his Day Three Fragrances brand too , because Michael succeeded everywhere.
I like how he stayed in his adventurous lane, now he’s a perfumer, but no matter what he worked on, he never looked back .
Caribbean and Hispaniola boozy-amber mood and sophistication of Ambar Dominicano, and the Mamajuana info appealed to me the most.

I love Michael Paul background story, he seems so enthusiastic about what he does and I bet his fragrances are awesome.
I am so curious about Ambar Dominicano because of Ida Meister review , artisanal fragrance with different liquors and sweet spices. The lime i imagine with counteract with more sweeter part of the scent really well, making it smell more … Caribbean .
    Overly exciting giveaway, USA
    Regards

  • I love your description of this fragrance! I’ve loved all that I’ve tried from Day Three and a boozy amber lightened with lime and tropical fruit sounds gorgeous!! I live in MT, USA.

  • Wow!!! What a very unique fragrance. Thank you Ida for a beautiful review of Amber Dominicano. My appeal is the mamajuana of this fragrance and also this fragrance sounds like a signature scent that can be worn all year around. Thank you for such a wonderful giveaway Cafleurebon and Michael Paul.
Greetings and gratitude from the USA.

The cola note sounds so beautiful. I am also curious about the Mamajuana note (this might be my new favorite word). I love Dominican culture. I like to read about pirates and the Caribbean, so Ámbar Dominicano sounds like the perfume of the year for me.

    Greetings everyone
First I’d like to personally thank Mr Paul for allowing all European readers to enter, i rarely go back home last few years, and all American Indie brands essays i read only , without being able to participate.
I guess Mr Paul is willing to ship the fragrance internationally, if I’m not mistaken something no other American indie brand owner was willing to do up until now, he’s the only one , thank you again.
Reading Mrs Meister essay on Ambar Dominicano was a true voyage into the unknown and deep ocean waters, with pirates, Mamajuana beverage and cola , I felt like I’m a character on the Black Perl together with Jack Sparrow, the famous captain and playboy.
Thank you, American living in Paris France

  • WaltherP99 says:

Michael Paul is a prime example of how you don’t necessarily have to be a ISIPCA graduate, and then trained for years by Alberto Morillas or Olivier Cresp to create magic, and Michael Paul specializes in both magic and perfumery
I’m a strict teetotaller, and even I’ve heard Mamajuana more because of its presumably legendary aphrodisiac properties.
I really like Ambar Dominicano profile, and it complexity. Boozy sweet , and cola undertones I find quite tempting.

    “during El Jefe’s dictatorship”

It’s not the time,or the place for such discussion, but believe me not everyone in the Dominican Republic believes Rafael Leónidas Trujillo Molina aka El Jefe was a dictator , on the contrary a lot of people believe he was a true patriot and liberator killed by the CIA , the latter is a fact by the way.
Porfirio Rubirosa was not just a playboy, but a legend in the field dating multiple of Hollywood female superstar actresses at the same time, from the likes of Ava Gardner , to Zsa Zsa Gabor and even Marilyn Monroe. Judging by the scent profile, and Ida impressions , Ambar Dominicano is a fragrance well suited for Porfirio Rubirosa lavish lifestyle.
    All profiles I already follow , @waltherp99bg
    Thanks a lot

  • Michael Paul is so not afraid all of the obstacles life is throwing at him , or the stiff competition , praiseworthy mindset if you ask me . It shows his level of dedication and self-expectation .
Also as liquor lover I believe realistically smelling boozy fragrances, even notes are hard to rare , and to come up with a fragrances reminiscent of Mamajuana is a courageous move.
Mamajuana taste differs vastly depending on the herbs , leaves and tree bark used. Some do taste like port wine , some are similar to Jägermeister , in some you can detect strong cane molasses aroma, and yes I know my liquor 😉
You have the option to purchase pre-mixed, to buy no liquid bottles with just herbs, leaves and bark , and to make up your mind hum much rum , wine and honey to mix.
Cola ,rum and lime are meant for each other, then the addition of passion fruit, resinous base, lots of depth… all resulted in me already being in love with Ambar Dominicano
Splendid review Ida , enjoyed it so much
    Thank you for the opportunity

What appealed to me about Ida’s review of Day Three Fragrances Ambar Dominicano is learning more about the history of the Caribbean culture and Mamajuana. Mamajuana is, historically speaking – is considered one of the first distilled alcoholic beverages of the Americas, preceding rum. I loved learning how it was made and how it’s ingredients are also used to make rum. This fragrance sounds bold, boozy, spicy, and resinous incorporating th3 spiced jamaican rum Mamajuana with some tropical fruits. This sounds like something I would absolutely love. • I didn’t know about Mamajuana, but sounds delicious. I am a fan of tropical drinks and smells (scenery also) and this fragrance sounds like a definite rotation in the warm weather.
